Cat 303 Excavator: Hydraulic Thumb Install

- Doing the bucked curl bushings and finally installing the thumb on the mini. Had to work the first half of the day off the grid because we were out of power due to high winds. Was nice to get all the big tools back for the second half.

Took long enough.
Harbor-freight has a diamond bur sawzall blade that just gnaws bushings make a couple straight cuts that'll let the bushing fold in
At 8 mins in when you start with the die grinder I learned a trick over the years for bearings and bushings... take a welder and run a hot bead around the inside then soak quickly with a hose or let it cool naturally. As the weld cools it shrinks the bushing/bearing enough that they almost fall out.
It’s hard to weld anything when the power is out and you’re generator doesn’t have enough power to run the welder…….

While you had the film sped up, you shoulda had the Benny Hill music playing LOL Great video and always great to see your dad in there with you. We lost power here for about 5 minutes, and that is unusual for our road. Usually, if someone has a fan on and pointed out a window it knocks the power out here.
For once I had power and my parents didn’t. Normally it’s the opposite.

I have a Wet Thumb on my little Takeuchi, wouldn't have bought it if it didn't have it really. It's so handy. I ran a bead of weld around my bushings and they punched right out.
For some reason even though they are greaseable Cat runs oilite bronze bushings so you can’t weld on them.
@@Oliver66FarmBoy That tool your Father made seemed to work well enough, I wanted to do that but I didn't have the right size thick wall pipe. There's always plenty of ways to skin a cat. Your thumb matches up perfect with your cutting edge, you'll be able to pick up pine needles with it. It's made out of thick steel as well.

Great job!!! ...... I'm curious, how the mini excavator works.? The engine will provide the power & in turns drive the hydraulic pumps ? eg... moving forward/backwards and doing the tasks... It will be great to see a video (101 crash course) , showing the interior of the engine & working principal for beginner like me...

What you do is weld a bead on the bushings and it with warp and make it easier to remove.
Not when the power is out and you’re working off a generator….

Did you guys adjust the pressure for the thumb? Cant seem to find where adjustment is.
You need a hollow ram like "Squatch253".
Hard to justify specialty tools when you aren’t going to use them regularly.
Great vid. Did you have to check/adjust the aux pressure for the thumb? I just got a gentec 824 and it they say to set the pressure to 1800

That Amazon warehouse that collapsed is about 20 miles southeast of us. I was dumping corn at Bunge in East St. Louis when that hit. I believe there have been 6 fatalities confirmed so far.
One heck of a mess they have down there. Nobody should have to deal with something like that. Especially this time of year.
The storms missed where I live in arkansas but farther east got hit pretty good the town where a friend of mines sister lives got hit and unfortunately her house was hit

What brand thumb did you use?
Remind me again what make and model of lathe y'all have? I know the one we have at my school is a 13" South Bend made (according to the serial number) in 1969. Needs a bit of work. There's between .030 and .040 of play in the cross feed, which is just annoying to me. Other than that, she runs great.

You can’t run that style thumb with a quick-tach and you loose to much lift capacity and bucket breakout force.
@@Oliver66FarmBoy I know about that gust be glade them buckets are easy to move around by hand I know all to well how hard it is to put pin on buckets on bigger equipment lol
