    It's funny that before pistons existed, this was pretty much the best way to do linear motion.

      I only got into SM after the survival update but I heard of those "dark times" 😁
      It was the same in Space Engineers... that's where my inspiration came from.
      I know this idea isn't new but all the advantages of hinges seem to be mostly forgotten in the SM community... hope to see a comeback.
      If you build something with hinges please let me know. Looking forward to it.

    While I did really like Bearing Pistons, you have to agree we're way past that era now and while yes, Piston as parts are rather expensive, they provide linear motion in the least amount of space, whilst with Bearing Pistons you have to give them lots of space to even extend

    • @oggi42gaming77
      @oggi42gaming77  2 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      They both have their pros and cons in my opinion. I would definitely avoid bearing pistons in vehicles because like you said: Pistons are more compact. When it comes to stationary machines however the space requirement of the long pipes very often is not a problem at all. Some machines and certain motions aren't even possible with pistons. Imagine something like a robot arm for example. Have a look at the swinging saw in my video. It pivots around it's center point and can fully extend to both sides without changing the orientation of the arm's end. This kind of movement can't be reproduced just with pistons. So while I definitely see your point I am still convinced bearing pistons or hinges do have a lot of underrated uses.

    These are nice but, pistons are less lag intensive, after a certain amount, pistons outweigh hinges, though they do have weaker outputs. They do have uses, mainly in the carrying department, since their load capacity is much higher. They have uses, but there's still things that benefit from pistons more, due to size, having the hinge can be a detriment at times due to size, but if it's not an issue of size, then go right ahead, they are great for distance for cheap.

    it's actually useful only as decoration since 3 bearings are very unstable compared to 1 piston. and i don't think it's cheaper in most cases because low level controller can't handle heavy things and to upgrade controller to max you will need more kits than you would need to upgrade piston. and you probably don't want to have empty slots in your high level controllers. also rails is cool idea but i don't think you will always have room for building it. the same is for bending part of hinges.
    anyway thank you for these cool ideas. your prototypes that uses this mechanism are really good.

    On lower end pc'c or in worlds that have a lot going on, you can use 3 lag inducing bearings instead of 1 lag inducing piston to do the same job for triple the lag! Plus it takes up multiple times the space.

      For example the ability to create an extendable arm that is controllable with W/S...
      I know it's possible with pistons too, but you need to add a lot of logic and it's doing this annoying sound because you are constanly switching two pistons between on and off

      The speed of motion is not linear, that is right. If this becomes a problem you can build a longer arm that does not fully extend. That way the speed becomes more even.
