    Easily the best tutorial I've seen on this panel and you don't even use this full time! I'm so glad more and more professional colorist are making content, it means those of us who want to learn can better separate out the noise and focus on where the good information is at.

    Hey Darren. :) I know you’ve done a streamdeck video already, but just wondering if you could do a follow up episode or make a brief comment about how you’d configure a streamdeck to compliment the mini panel. What is the mini “missing” that makes the streamdeck a must have?

    One thing that he did not mention is, this where I was sold on this panel, my body was trying to sell me on this and I was at his house playing with it, I hit the viewer button move some of the other buttons and I was grading in viewer mode, I yell out what, he comes back from the kitchen and I was on my computer ordering this, the fact that you can grade while in the viewer mode, its a game changer, you don't need to look at the software, everything its on the panel, viewer screen and grading, can't do that with a mouse or pen.

    • @Quadz10
      @Quadz10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Grading full screen on my 42 OLED would be a game changer. You just sold me on this…

  • @larryfitzgerald9384

    You can copy and paste grades onto multiple clips, although it requires a mouse to do so. Highlight the clip thumbnail, hit the COPY button on the panel, select target clip/s, hit PASTE. Same works for individual nodes. I haven’t found a way to do it using only panel controls.

    • @DarrenMostyn
      @DarrenMostyn  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      middle mouse click copies grades which is easier than your method described but would be noce to do on the panel. Thanks larry.

    After having a mini panel for 9+ months, using it regularly, I realise how much I still have available to incorporate into my workflow. Super useful video, thanks Darren. I'm wondering if you'd maybe be up for doing a video on what streamdeck settings you'd set up if you had 1 (and 2) streamdecks in order to get the closest thing to an advanced panel? How would you have it set up to use with the mini panel? I know you've done a streamdeck video before, but from memory this was used with the advanced panel?
    Thanks so much pal, big love from Edinburgh

    • @DarrenMostyn
      @DarrenMostyn  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I would add save stills and recall to the stream deck. The advanced panel gives me around 20 still stores - invaluable. else, my steam deck would be pretty much like I have on my TH-cam episode.

    • @iainpennington1852
      @iainpennington1852 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DarrenMostyn I’m assuming when you say “save stills” that you’ve got another meaning for it than “grab stills”, which obviously there is a button on the mini. I’ve only used an advanced panel twice (fortunately plenty more to come) so maybe I don’t know which feature you’re exactly referring to? Appreciate the response 🙂

    Thank you Darren! I've had to settle for the Micro Panel as I had budget restrictions, but I do use it in conjunction with a Stream Deck XL and just having the ability to balance using the track balls is already far more accurate, easier and a time saver. Keep it up with the great videos.

    I wish I could spend a few days with you I'm sure would learn SO much! You're an entirely other level than most you can tell. Also did you ever do any videos explaining what each thing is for? I still don't know what gain, offset, lift exactly are coming from a professional photo background. Obviously I know what shadows do, contrast, saturation, etc. but would love to hear you explain what each control does for beginners out there. Thanks man.

    Hello Darren, first of all a big thank you for the quality of your videos on Resolve. I have also been a colorist for 20 years in Paris and until now attached to my Pablo Rio who you must necessarily know as a good British subject :-). I am in the process of switching to Resolve with a mini panel and Mac Pro M2, I find lots of great things but in terms of transport and image comparisons in the timeline I find it a little cumbersome when you want to use the comparison function between 2 images of the timeline via Wipe timeline clip, we must do 3 operations: - 1 open a contextual menu by right click - 2 visually search for the Wipe Timeline Clip line - 3 Click on this line. Is there no way to do this by hovering over the image to compare and then just clicking? I couldn't find a shortcut to enable the Wipe Timeline Clip feature. In the same way we cannot activate Wipe Timeline Clip from the timeline window in the gallery, it would be super practical to be able to designate the timeline image to compare in this gallery area so as to keep the position of the image that we compare in place on the main timeline... But probably I'm missing some keys?? You probably have an opinion or advice to improve my question. And thank you again for your perfect videos!!

    Honestly I would wish for a control panel with just one ball and then you just switch between lift, gamma, gain, etc. And then it would have some important shortcuts around it. A macro panel basically.
    That would also make it way more affordable for people who are just getting into color grading...

    • @DarrenMostyn
      @DarrenMostyn  ปีที่แล้ว +6

      look at tangent ripple then - very cheap and works!. one ball - there is no point - the whole idea is you move all at the same time. one ball would be a 'ball ache'.

    • @fbfvFabianBashota
      @fbfvFabianBashota ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DarrenMostyn yeah I know about that one, definetely a cheaper alternative. Maybe a few more knobs and shortcut buttons would help though.
      And I mean you are absolutely right, but as I'm coming from using a mouse, everything would be an upgrade, even one ball :D

    On the one hand, I’m happy to see a Darren video on the Mini Panel. OTOH, I’m sad because it means there will be no Mini Panel 2 at Resolvecon. 😢 It’s a six-year old Version 1.0 piece of kit that I’m really interested in, but I sense there must be a heap of potential improvements Black Magic have stacked up for Version 2 by now, and I’d rather not drop the best part of £2k on something that is well overdue for replacement.

    I’ve been very happy with the Mini panel but wish there was more flexibility in customizing some of the controls. For example there is a Grab Still button but no corresponding “Apply Grade” button. It seems that we users should be able to do more to decide what functions to assign or omit. Still a superb tool. Question - I have the Speed Editor and therefore Davinci Resolve full version. I am still considering purchasing the mini panel.
    But if I instead purchase the new micro panel, launced 2024 at NAB and as said already have the Speed Editor what functions if any will I not have compared to the mini panel.
    When I say functions I mean adjustments made by a knob or wheel since the mouse and keyboard always can be used to do adjustments.
    Just to add I do also have the a Wacom unit.
    Today I bascially only do color adjustments and still learning but will expand the use of Davinci to the cut page as well as fusion over time.

    Great video. I just got a Micro Panel...
    One question, when I rotate a trackball vertically (ie towards 12 o'clock), the white dot on the color wheel in Davinci moves up towards 11 o'clock, ie not straight up, but towards the left.
    Similarly when I rotate the trackball straight down at 6 o'clock, the white dot on the color wheel in Davinci moves down towards 5 o'clock. It seems off by 30 degrees.
    The same if I rotate the trackball left or right (towards 9 o'clock or 3 o'clock), the white dot moves between 8 o'clock and 2 o'clock respectively).
    This is with all trackballs.
    Is this correct? It doesn't seem right. I assumed that the trackballs would directly correspond with the Color Wheels in Davinci on screen.

      SOLUTION
      For those who came across this issue, here is the solution to align the Trackballs with that on Davinci.
      STEPS
      Go to DaVinci Resolve > Preferences > User > Control Panels, and uncheck "Classic DaVinci trackball alignment"
      Now the Trackballs will be aligned with that on the screen.

    Oh so it's got the HDR in the update, i was under the impression of- its same as micro panel without HDR so why bother going for an upgrade, but this video convinced me more for opting the upgrade to mini. I love the way that this video is so detailed, be it a professional or noob it benefits both. Thanks a lot Darren i wouldn't have bothered about exploring more until your video pop's up and i go lets see... What else can i do with this 😅. You are the most inspiring Catalyst and I'm very thankful for it sir🙂.

    • @DarrenMostyn
      @DarrenMostyn  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes the HDR can access all the different zones easily and you can expand the window and adjust the zones all on the panel. Enjoy! Thanks for your support over the years too, I know your name is on here a lot and its appreciated.

    all I personally need from Blackmagic now is a Photoshop equivalent so I can finally cut the umbilical Adobe cord

    • @AlecKinnear
      @AlecKinnear ปีที่แล้ว

      There are Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign equivalents available from Serif. Affinity Photo, Affinity Designer, Affinity Publisher. Total cost about €150 as a package, no subscription. After seven years, we were dinged for v2 at about €100 to upgrade all three (not each one but all of them). Adobe lifers complain that the feature parity is not exact but it's pretty close and often Affinity Photo does things in a better way, as some Photoshop methods were invented so long ago that they are just awkward. Adobe doesn't dare change them (same Adobe lifers) but Affinity can.

      The balls and rings and dials for features will change how you work. HUGE difference - Im not sure I could actually grade the same level of perfection with a mouse just due to sensitivity of parameters.
