The CCTV footage on Ruby road was filmed by a camera 66 metres away. I find it interesting that 73 yards happens to be 66.75 metres. Ruby's mother in the projection is described by the doctor as being blurred, or out of focus, or something to that effect. Sounds very familiar... Just throwing that out there, since I'm not sure if anyone else has mentioned it.
Yes, the sutekh voice actor also voiced the beast, i think that’s why carla said that name. I think we can expect a sort of retcon since sutekh is like the egyptian devil (i think?). There will be a connection at least mentioned in passing between the two
I applaud RTD for this spiritual successor to "Pyramids of Mars". That's one of my favorite stories from the Tom Baker era for several reasons: first, because I have always been interested in Egyptology; second, because I love gothic horror; and third because Sutek frightened the Doctor - this is a major reason why the villian of the piece made me fully understand wanting to hide behind the couch (and I first saw this story toward the end of my teens). Much of that was thanks to Gabrlel Wolf and his calm, smooth, patient voice. That simply amplified that character's evil. It was good to hear Gabriel Wolf's voice again (just as it was in "The Impossible Planet" / "The Satan Pit"), and he still has that gift of providing spinechills. I have a feeling that "Empire of Death" will not dissapoint.
I wonder if the story will end with the Doctor deciding to finally fulfil his promise to Susan and go back to visit her and bring Carol Anbe Ford back for the final scene.
i have a feeling it might lead to next season honestly. the whole sutekh stuff will end but it will go into next season the doctor trying to find her again or deal with his issues to it.
I would love that. I always thought it would be very sad to recast her with someone who's just picked for her name. Gotta say tough, Susan Twist deserves a better acting carreer she's really good
Ive never shaken so much with excitement in an episods of Doctor Who before, but this episode did it. This was A* Doctor Who, and Ive never been this much on the edge of my seat ever. Im genuienly shocked and excited beyond belief!! What an episode, I just hope Empire of Death can provide a satisyfing defeat. Also, anyone else notice that Rubys mother was 66 meters away from the camera, or.... 73 yards!!!!
Oooooh that would point to it being Ruby right? An older version of Ruby like in 73 yards (maybe not as old). I was never into the theory of Ruby delivering herself it always seemed a bit cheap to me, but what else could it be? And I agree it was such an exciting episode! I had so so much fun watching!
One of the more subtle, but brilliant, clues was the use of the theme that the Egyptian guy plays as Scarman comes through to the priory in Pyramids as the episode built to the reveal
Russell T Davies finales are my favourite episodes of Doctor Who. Absolutely amazing. Full of twists and turns, great little bits of character stuff for Ruby, Carla, Kate, practically everyone, and even though this isn't Doctor's Granddaughter Susan, the fact she's being brought up so much is suggesting she'll be in Series 15! And hearing the voice of Sutekh and The Beast again is nice!
Main questions for ‘Empire of Death’ 1. Who is Ruby’s Mum? 2. Who is Mrs Flood?-maybe she is ruby’s mum 3. Would you like a jelly baby? 4. Will we see 14 as 15 will probably take the other tardis if it hasnt been taken by sutekh
The Trickster hopefully: They kept talking about the chance of a trap, Sutekh revealed the trickster as the god of traps, RTD has brought up the trickster before too, clearly on his mind
@@bengregory1235 I agree, the joke this episode of "95% trap" and the confirmation of the trickster being a god, definitely makes me feel like that black sillhouetted figure is going to have a horror reveal as a trap for the doctor
I checked the credits immediately when over, paused it, and yes, it is indeed Gabriel Woolf. He's 91 now and he still has the voice! I'm gonna watch Syntell when it comes out to see how New WHOvians take this, having never seen Pyramids of Mars. I knew it was him when Henrietta started chanting. I wasn't sure they should do this, but the reveal was really really good! Now RTD just has to STICK THE LANDING!!!
The TARDIS fake out was hilarious. The idea of Susan being a granddaughter with him having no kids makes me wonder there's more retconning to come for her as well.
@scottboswell6406 I like it when it's like this, just a vague "timey-whimey" explanation or suggestion of more at play - leaving it open for more down the track if someone picks up the thread or can just be a throwaway line to remind people that the doctor is inextricably linked with time and space. I think who is at its best when it leaves (and eventually pays off) the little breadcrumb trails. I can understand why it would rub people the wrong way though, it just doesn't for me personally.
Exdpt he has a granddaughter named Susan. You forget that so a great graknddaughter would be possible. The doctor Tunnel from his past eventuly he has to Deal with thep reveal that he is basicly THE Timelord.
@@markc8956 it’s obvious to the “fandom” type fans because they pay attention to all the theories floating around. Someone not as heavily invested in Doctor who wouldn’t be following all that, and would be suprised.
That was so good! I decided to watch it alone in the dark because RTD said it was scary, and it was so worth it. Genuinely quite a scary and tense episode. Sutekh’s new design is so cool too.
Maybe I'll get used to it idk but the whole time Ive been hoping sutekh would return to dw I kinda assumed he would look more or less the same. He could have that updated jackal CGI head when the helmet comes off but have the black and red body at least. Maybe I'm being too nitpicky but eh
Absolutely love the episode was fixated on multiple things but the fact that the camera that recorded it was mentioned to be about 66 metres away and that is very close to 73 yards could be a coincidence
It was so good, my daughter and I were literally on the end of our seats. We kept pausing it and talking about what was happening, changing our theories as it went.
Anyone else thinking 'The Boss' and Mrs' Floods true identity will be kept secret and taken into series 15 or beyond? Can't see them being revealed in next weeks episode
I think the tales of the tardis ep will start with ruby seeing the memory of the tardis in the time window and running inside and thats then shown how the memory tardis was created
Surprised how much they've left unanswered for the next episode - obviously we know Sutekh is the big bad and that Susan Triad was a misdirect but we still don't know what his plan is, who Ruby's mother is and the identity of Mrs Flood. Also Susan (granddaughter) was namedropped far too much for it to be something that RTD simply uses as a plot contrivance. I have a feeling she's showing up either next episode (Mrs flood?) or in Series 15
I mean, why are you that surprised? its a 2-parter, ofc things weren't going to answered. RE Susan - could appear in the next episode right at the end, the doctor fulfils his promise kinda thing
TRICKSTER MENTION!! I actually watched all of the trickster SJA episodes and pyramids of mars to prepare myself for the trickster's and/or sutekh's potential comeback. I have the complete sarah jane adventures box set where one of the cds has the complete story of pyramids of mars as a tribute to Elizabeth Sladen (R.I.P.) on it. I was kind of dissappointed sadly, because the story felt veeeery stretched out. I'm also usually a new who watcher so I'm used to bigger and more exciting visuals and costumes. I did like this new episode though, even though the whole episode was kind of just a teaser for the actual final episode next week. It definetley gave Sutekh the mystery and dark power that the original story kind of lacked a little bit for me.
Don’t worry classic Who can be a lot for nuwho viewers I’m the same. Someone needs to cut down and edit classic Who in a modern style, I think that would be amazing.
@@oatymilkshake I would like them to be cut down but not to the 45 minute format we have nowadays because that is also too short for my taste. I love two parters with substance in both parts. New who‘s soundtrack is also a lot more engaging imo
The Trickster should remain an SJA villain. I like the character, but I don’t see him returning in Who. Fenric could come back too, and maybe not as a villain (there have been DW baddies who reformed before, the Ice Warriors or the Zygons anyone?)
The whole build up throughout this episode was 11/10 and the reveal of sutek literally had me gasping for air, I’ve not been this hyped for a finale since 2017’s - World enough and time, true doctor who is BACK!
Loving your excitement, Tharries :) For what it's worth, I haven't watched Pyramids of Mars yet (though I do know about it, generally speaking), and the twist still very much worked for me. The Doctor's reaction and the reveal itself worked really well even if you know nothing about Sutekh imo. I thought the episode was insane, like, in a great way. There was SO MUCH to unpack in it, that I'm still recovering and processing everything. I really enjoyed it, and it felt like a very classic-RTD finale. His part 1's are always amazing though, tying in so many loose threads and theories (I feel like every single Susan Twist theory I've heard of was mentioned in one way or another lol).. As you've said, I just hope he can land the second part next week as well, cause the set up has been really great so far. I did feel like there was a bit of an overabundance of characters. Like, take Rose for example - I agree with you, she didn't do much. As much as I love her and glad she was brought back (I'm a trans person myself, so very glad for the representation; and I loved her befriending Ruby, making Carla want to join, and mentioning Donna and 14), I felt like she was very much out of place and under-utilised here. When we saw her in the trailers, I was waiting to find out why she was even in UNIT to begin with, and there was just... No explanation for it. That's a pretty small gripe tho, all things considered. I did enjoy her presence anyway, and liked all the small character moments we did get. I thought Kate in particular was amazing in this episode, Mel was good and actually had something to do for a change haha, and Morris was also a great addition. Oh and yeah, I'm also confused about the bit where the Doctor implied that he hadn't had kids yet - Cause, well, RTD1 era established that the Doctor was already a dad.. And even this season we've had mentions of him being one (it was an entire plot point in Boom), so that was a bit odd imo. Also, Kate claiming she had no idea about him having a granddaughter when Susan's photo was literally in the Black Archive in Day of the Doctor.. Though, it is the Black Archive, so I suppose maybe she forgot lol.
I don't think it's that he's not a dad He says "yes" and then corrects to "no" The question was, "Do you have kids?" which would be a no as he's unsure of they're alive
I’ve got a few questions that weren’t part of the plot but how it was promoted beforehand: Has the whole Roswell incident scene been cut - the whole adventure with the Doctor wearing a whistle etc? What’s been waiting at UNIT since the time of the Third Doctor? And how does the Tales Of The TARDIS episode fit in, I presumed that would be the cliffhanger. I loved that episode, had chills throughout - just think the marketing has been slightly misleading, but there’s still next week to sort stuff out!
Always love your enthusiasm Tharries! The episode was so intense and completely agree with all your points in this vid! RTD really smashed this set up, fingers crossed he sticks the landing!
11:30 The Tales of the Tardis that is airing on Thursday, I'm reckoning will be more than a mention, I think it will BE Pyramids of Mars bookended by Fifteen explaining it to Ruby (and the audiences who may not know).
When The Doctor explained regeneration to Ruby, he literally said "We can use it to change our face and hide ourselves away." Mrs Flood 10 minutes later - "Im always hiding myself away." She's a Timelord. They literally told us right to our face. How has every youtube reactor/reviewer missed this 😂😂
A bit of dodgy CGI at the end with the reveal of Sutekh around the TARDIS. I kinda wish they'd kept him as a vaguely amorphous evil looking thing. But dodgy effects are part of the show's DNA so I can look past it.
That was aboslutely EPIC ! Wow ! I was seriously buzzing when it ended ! The title of the finale episode is interesting, considering that in the Catacombes here in Paris , there is an entrance with a sign over the doorway that says, 'Arrête! C'est ici l'empire de la Mort' ("Stop! This is the empire of Death") !
I thought the show wasn't going to be able to top Boom, 73 Yards, and Rogue, but they keep proving me wrong. This season has been getting better and better. I feel like the TARDIS going haywire after Donna spilled coffee on it was the start of this because that was the first time we saw Susan Twist in Isaac Newton's time and right after, the TARDIS took them to into the void, almost as if it were doing it on purpose. It was following Sutekh's whispers.
The thing that is at the very forefront of my mind right now is how long as the tardis had that thing attached to it? its been unpredictable since what wild blue yonder? with harsher landings and the groaning its been making. My personal guess is it entered into this universe and latched onto the tardis at the edge of the universe. Perhaps its been feeding on the Tardis power to gain a more corporeal or stronger form in this dimension. As to how rubys storyline relates I have no idea. I dont think her mom/the hooded figure is a villain- I think she was perhaps trying to warn the doctor of the thing surround the tardis, which she could see, implying she and perhaps ruby are special for their own reasons.
I felt the build up plodded and - although it'll inevitably prove important later - the high tech examination of the VHS tape really dragged. But there's got to be some kind of modern version of somehow banishing Sutekh in time since he's too powerful to be destroyed - as before. Or perhaps Horus, Isis and co are going to put in an appearance this time... My main problem with this is that in the Who universe Sutekh is not a god but a very powerful alien mistaken for one. Maybe there has always been an actual "devil" behind every imagining and this is it, but it manifests as the specific jackal headed Egyptian mistaken identity version. I'd say that doesn't work too well when completely divorced from the ancient Egyptian reference point. I also find the wordplay a bit silly - "Sue Tech"... Personally, I'd seen the possibility but dismissed it as too silly - that'll teach me about the level the show is going for. Oh no, an evil Roman emperor is returning and everyone seems to be rowing boats on their knees - gasp "knee row"... From a characterisation point of view I find the Doctor and co constantly hugging and jumping up and down in delight a bit much too. But again, I suppose it's a matter of level again. I've always preferred the Doctor to be a bit childlike but not childish.
I'm calling it right now. Ruby is the first incarnation of Susan. Her mother is Mrs Flood, who is therefore the Doctor's daughter. They established in this episode that the Doctor doesn't know who Susan's parents are, saying it's something he'll find out in the future. And coincidentally, we also don't know who Ruby's parents are. So what if Ruby and Susan are the same person, just different incarnations. Ruby would have to be the first, since we've seen her as a baby, and Susan a future one. Timey-wimey.
Russell used the Impossible Planet as a template to bring back Sutekh in the future, but who is the Beast in this pantheon of Gods? Also, is Ruby’s mum Susan?
Technically when David Tennant asked which version of the devil he was he claimed "all of them". But on Impossible Planet he was being deceptive. Sutekh on the other hand was more than happy to tell everyone what he was going to do to them.
The set up. The lead up into that reveal... this is why I freaking love Doctor Who. I would have NEVER pieced that together! God the reveal of Sutekh was absolutely brilliant! Best thing is the mysteries still aren't over! I adore Season 14/Season 1 so much dude! LOL
As a NON Classic fan... My wife was completely confused and had no idea of what was going on and had no idea who Sutekh was, I got it (as a classic fan) but my wife was annoyed that she couldn't figure out what was going on.
@@ArdinVincent Where did I say angry?? I said confused and annoyed and yes because it took me hours to explain the master.... Less so with the Daleks as she knew enough to recognise them..
It was a clever misdirection. Very poor set up across a very scattershot season. Still many questions regarding Ruby’s parentage, who Flood is, unless she was just a follower set there to watch. He is still constantly apologising, but fewer tears so that was a bonus
Can’t believe we got Gabriel wolf back to voice him again it’s just absolutely insane to hear his voice dude is honestly got the voice of a true who villain just a epic masterpiece this episode bring on the empire of death ❤️❤️
During "the doctors daughter" 10 tells Donna that he's been a father before, might be fully explained next week but this contradicts the whole out of order granddaughter thing
My worry here is that RTD has only ever REALLY "stuck the landing" with one of his finales (Parting of the Ways, fight me, none of the rest live up to the first part), so my best guess for next week is: The stakes escalate constantly and exponentially, it keeps getting worse and worse, and then just after half way we find out who Ruby's mum (and maybe dad) is, and she turns out to be the daughter of a god, or a god and a time lord, and she can access godlike powers, and she just basically makes all the bad stuff unhappen while the Murray Gold score tried to trick the audience into thinking that something well-written is happening instead. I HOPE I'm wrong, but I BET I'm not
One thing that interested me, was the comparison between Rose in Season 1 with Eccleston & Ruby. Rose in Father's day ignored the Doctor's order not to interfere while Ruby, did, despite herself, not interfere with her Mother in the Time Window sequence.
Shot in the dark Theory Ruby is Susan the doctors granddaughter her mother is Jenny (the clone from doctors daughter) who is also Ruby's neighbor. Like Donna passing the time lord stuff to Rose. The timeless child is/was apart of the Pantheon. The doctor passed a part of the timeless child to Jenny and then to Rose which will explain the snow that appears around her. Reasoning 1. Susan was in one of 14th doctors specials (crappy reasoning I know). 2. In this episode the doctor said Susan is from a kid the doctor has not had yet or he does not know yet this works with Jenny because he from what I know still thinks she is dead 3. The reasoning for the timeless child being apart of the Pantheon in some and it being passed down in some way is because on another video someone mentioned that besides the neighbor only other characters to break the 4th wall are some of the Pantheon and the doctor (funny enough the 4th doctor broke the 4th wall) she could just be another Pantheon like the trickster but I want to stretch this crack pot theory out. I know this theory is out there but if by chance I'm right I want proof of it
Tharries. You and your community were the first place I went after seeing one of the best episodes of DW. Thanks for sharing our enthusiasm for one of the greatest episodes in Who history!
speaking as someone who only started with 2005 Who, the way they built up The Master hit hard despite prior to seeing that, not knowing who The Master was. great execution there. same can be said for Sutekh and how they built him up in this episode and season overall. I actually think they handled this brilliantly and i immediately felt the weight of the potential threat and and horror this entity. I've been since researching the backstory and I'm only getting more and more excited. did the same for The Master and any other classic who figure they bring back. say what you will about RTD but this guy understands the "feeling" of doctor who and never fails to deliver on that feeling. I've watched all of The Sarah Jane Adventures and i really hope we see a return of The Trickster, but if he just ends up getting that name drop and nothing else, I'm already happy from that. I'm really excited for the future of this show!
When ruby says "how can you know your granddaughter before your kid?" Doctor : timey wimey. My theory; Ruby's mom is river song and ruby IS his daughter. I am excited by sutekh. What an amazing episode!!
@@thetimeshadow6769yeah that tracks, and also when river regenerates it’s into someone older (guessing because she’s part human) so yeah she could be river
I am still not sure Mrs Flood is connected to this. I mean are there any other "gods" lurking. This needs to be resolved, and I suspect Mrs Flood has a key role
@@EchodaGhost98 Thats kind of what I am leaning towards.... See I was always hoping given its Anita, awe get Brian in there somewhere in the background ;) Just lurking
@@EchodaGhost98Mrs F... Foreman. I might be reaching, but I feel almost certain she is Susan Foreman. We dont know her first name, and we know from photo leaks she is in Season 2 in a time period dress, and I dont think she will be an Antagonist
I was a little disappointed, not because I have any problem with Sutekh coming back just because when Carla said "I know what that is, it’s the beast" I was hyped for the beast from the Satan Pit returning
There is a chance they'll turn out to be the same thing, kinda. The same voice actor plays Sutekh and the beast, and the beast name drop and the similarities to the beast seems too deliberate
Not only did I think it was great but my wife - not a fan and no clue about Pyramids (why should she?) thought it was much better than it’s been. The problem is who’s still going to be watching. They should - this was incredible.
@@mohzayd1234 Fingers crossed 🤞 I'm still interested in the music that Ruby was singing in The Devils Chord. It's exactly the same as Tricksters theme.
As someone who has barley watched classic who, I was at the edge of my seat and full of excitement this episode. I don’t even have a guess of where they can go… I feel like next season will probably cover the meep’s boss, and maybe build up to the master. I do listen to big finish a little bit and I’m hoping for the Rani and or The Monk, I think those two and the master as a trio of time lord villains could be fun.
Ok I know the susan thing was a misdirect, but she is being brought up so much now that I hope we see her, even for just a small cameo scene why not have carole anne ford come back and film a regeneration scene that would be pretty cool. hehe maybe varada sethus character could be a regenerated susan.
I’m glad it wasn’t Omega or The Trickster involved in this. We get the return of one of the most memorable 70’s Who villains, and they used Sutekh as a season ended antagonist. We don’t need Daleks or Cybermen to be the Big Bad at the end. Now imagine how they can bring back Fenric!
I haven't seen pyramids of mars, so I don't know about sutehk. But, i don't know how to describe this: the episode got me excited about being excited for this villain?
I appreciate you putting SPOILER in the title but not including Photos or Words that are ACTUAL spoilers! Cheers! ;-) I'm just wondering that there's got to be MORE to Susan Triad and Mrs Flood. There's got to be additional Information that we haven't gotten yet. We have a reveal in this episode. But nothing else is really Deciphered fully yet. (the Snow, The mother, Susan across the Universe and Time, etc) That's my thoughts...
Honestly can't believe 14 wasn't even mentioned. Yeah, he's 'retired' and whatever else and knows 15 is out there, but you're telling me he just willingly sits by when this massive threat is on Earth? Especially with it being TARDIS centric
I loved it so much. I am not sure, however, where you go from here. Moving on from next season you’ve peaked with the BIGGEST BADDEST BAD GUY, and then going back to maybe the trickster who was listed as a lesser to Sutekh. I don’t doubt Russel can figure it out, I’m just not to sure.
@@davidb.6681 yes i saw all the videos and also put together the sue tech and harriet being a harbinger as soon as the cast list was revealed. dont be a dumbass prude
I really thought they were going to tell us who Ruby / her mom is in this one. Guess we'll have to wait until next week. Another thing, Ms Flood is going to be joining then in the next season, so I wonder how that all plays into things from this episode.
The end reveal was near perfection. Second tardis appears in the time window and the tardis growled in wild blue wonder. Wonder if this is where the tardis ended up with sutekh? The tardis was also doubled in the giggle. Double sutekh? Hmmm
Just had a thought: I was previously assuming it latched itself onto the tardis around wild blue yonder or church on ruby road time, since thats when the tardis started acted up a bit. But what if it has been attached to the tardis since pyramids of mars? and only recently it has begun to gain enough power to move in this corporeal realm and affect things? Its the one who waits...been waiting on/inside the tardis for a loonnnng time in other words lol either way the prospect of the doctor having been jaunting about and the tardis having been suffering and leeched off of is a dramatic and actually really sad one, poor thing.
I’m not a super fan but I’m not a casual either, even for me the reveal was great! however it does make the idea of this season being a ‘soft reboot’ more laughable: Susan and Sutekh being core to the plot and old companions returning
They said that he has a granddaughter but not daughter, could Ruby be the daughter? She's probably daughter of the Trickster so probably not but let's not forget the doctor has a daughter. Bring Georgia back!😅
Have to applaud the clever mis-direct with the fans first thinking that Susan Twist was going to be the Doctor's granddaughter only to drop that theory just before the episode which then has the Doctor convinced she IS Susan and pursuing that line of enquiry to throw us off the Sutekh idea. Terrific episode, so much going on, interwoven and things scattered here and there. I cant help but think Mrs Flood might be a hold over for series 15 rather than wrap up her story plus Ruby and deal with Sutekh. Been a bit unsure of the series so far apart from 73 Yards, I haven't been really feeling it but this episode has given me that Doctor Who buzz again!
Riiight, the Doctor's worried about being a danger to Susan. He freaking abandoned her at 16 years old in an apocalypse with only one shoe!!! Besides that, absolutely A+ episode!
Im convinced ruby is susan, and she's the daughter of georgia tennant's character in the 4th season (the doctors daughter). When the doctor told susan still hadnt been born, that was the hint. The cloaked woman is georgia tennant.
You asked how casual fans would react, but I have a different take: I've been a *huge* Doctor Who fan since before Tharries was born, but like most fans, I've spent more time reading Wikipedia entries on certain classic stories then watching them (although I've still seen a ton of them), so when Sutekh's name came up, it was incredibly underwhelming because I assumed it was some new creature, particularly because of his new form (a giant CGI dog). I just guessed that if it were an existing adversary, it would have had to have previously been a 12' puppet, which seemed unlikely (although obviously characters have changed form before, it's just the first impression). The tension and build up across the whole episode was wonderful, l loved seeing Rose Noble and Mel again, but the payoff was non-existent for me sadly. Still looking forward to next week (and the Tales episode in-between of course), but I wish RTD had provided *any* context to this character that didn't require having seen a single 50-year-old serial, like he'd previously done an excellent job with the Master and the Daleks and even the Toymaker when he reintroduced those villians. Just a confusing cliffhanger that sidestepped all the good questions of the season for a reveal that didn't mean anything because we aren't going to know what the stakes really are until next week.
So, the Doctor may have had a grandchild before having a child. Therefore, there may be a daughter that 15 wouldn't recognize. Could it be Mrs. Flood? And could she be named for her mother? Melody POND, RIVER Song, Mrs. FLOOD?!? And perhaps her first name is Harmony or something similarly musical?
I just realized Ruby could be the doctors daughter! Then ms flood could be Susan living next door to her mother as a youngster the way River went to befriend her parents younger versions
Regarding Mrs. Flood . . . I think she is a normal woman when we first meet her. Just Ruby's neighbour. She sees the TARDIS dematerialise when it goes back to 2004, and is bewildered. While it is in 2004, by the church, Sutekh attaches himself to it, as implied by the time-window scene. Oblivious, the Doctor then takes it back to Ruby's street and rushes into the house. Mrs. Flood is waiting outside. The TARDIS knows it has been infected with a hostile presence, and pours itself into the nearest living thing. Mrs. Flood is a back-up copy. Or a vessel where the TARDIS can sit safely and wait. She's a lifeboat, or an ark (to protect It from the "flood"). That's why, at the end of the first episode, she knows what a TARDIS is, when earlier, she didn't. So when she says, "Never seen a TARDIS before", she's talking about herself.
I did and it was established sutekh was last of powerful alien race playing a part not an actual god and was mortal as he died in the time tunnel - then turns up with all these new powers and a god.
I’m pretty sure that’s the first Doctor Who story I ever saw when the show began airing in America in the mid 70s. I’ll have to go back and watch it again, 50 years later.
Apart from the opening being the best ever, this was quite possibly the best episode ever, and I’ve been around since 1963! It left me literally shaking. 💙💙
OKAY now that was Doctor Who, 2 parter easily fitted in everything it needed into the time frame. Ncuti was fucking brilliant tbh apart from the last few minutes of dot & bubble first time I've really really felt it & believed in him. Brilliant writing and subversion great! 10/10
I'm tickled by how the Toymaker, Sutekh, the Mara, the Trickster and Maestro are all family. You can bet on having a scene, where all of these characters are on camera together, expressing nothing but contempt towards each other. I still think RTD, will have the Doctor recruit the Guardians, or the Eternals, to help combat Sutekh and his ilk. If not other gods, he'll probably invoke his more traditional enemies, like the Daleks, Cybermen and the Timelords, which would probably include the Master.
I CALLED "SUE TECH" WEEKS AGO WHEN SHE WAS CONFIRMED AS BEING "SUSAN TRIAD, TECH ENTREPRENEUR"... But I honestly thought I was joking by portmanteauing "Sue Tech"
I believe Russell specifically mentioned something about the distance from her mother was important
yep saw it. quick mental calculation. 'we're not gonna see the mother's face.' sure enough.
Also that the tardis is at ruby rd twice. Is the second time from ruby going to drop herself in 2004 later in their timeline?
@@eveebunnyor is it “ another, the same Tardis”?
i mentioned when 73yards aired that the metric equivalent of 66.75 is very close to 666

Yes, the sutekh voice actor also voiced the beast, i think that’s why carla said that name. I think we can expect a sort of retcon since sutekh is like the egyptian devil (i think?). There will be a connection at least mentioned in passing between the two
There was a bit tbf the vessels, the way they’re possessed and the harbingers could be harbingers of darkness as oppose to the disciples of light
Also I didn’t that know about the voice actor surely there’s going to be a connection
I always thought not tying satan out into pyramids of mars was a big problem.
Once it spoke I knew Gabriel Wolf's voice straight away who he who waits was, props to Gabriel for doing the voice again the bloke is 94 years old.
I had that same thought. A cameo appearance at the end of the next episode would feel right thematically.
i have a feeling it might lead to next season honestly.
the whole sutekh stuff will end but it will go into next season the doctor trying to find her again or deal with his issues to it.
I couldn’t agree more, this is so awesome well done to RDJ. This might be my favorite episode of doctor who since the day of the doctor… crazy
@@DoctorWhoDoctorMeRTD* Robert Downey Jr. Isn't involved in doctor who, lol
She might even be in the next episode 👀
Main questions for ‘Empire of Death’
1. Who is Ruby’s Mum?
2. Who is Mrs Flood?-maybe she is ruby’s mum
3. Would you like a jelly baby?
4. Will we see 14 as 15 will probably take the other tardis if it hasnt been taken by sutekh
i Stll like to to see that Ruby's mum is Susan!
I was surprised by the amount of detail Russel put in... In the original Suket storyline there was an Ibtahim. In this one... Theres a Col Ibrahim...
And in the original Sutekh was trying to get to Earth at the future location of UNIT's HQ!
The TARDIS fake out was hilarious.
The idea of Susan being a granddaughter with him having no kids makes me wonder there's more retconning to come for her as well.
That''s the one thing I didn't like. Can we please leave the rest of The Doctor's past alone for awhile?
@scottboswell6406 I like it when it's like this, just a vague "timey-whimey" explanation or suggestion of more at play - leaving it open for more down the track if someone picks up the thread or can just be a throwaway line to remind people that the doctor is inextricably linked with time and space. I think who is at its best when it leaves (and eventually pays off) the little breadcrumb trails.
I can understand why it would rub people the wrong way though, it just doesn't for me personally.
@@scottboswell6406 Well remember that The Doctor had a bunch of regenerations that he doesn't remember, right? or does he remember all those now?

I clocked that we probably got it right with Sutekh when Susan Triad said “you can call me Sue” really early on
At the end of her speech the crowd went “sue tech! sue tech!”
I think I must've said sutekh about 100 times before the reveal I was so excited 😂
This is why, despite the worst of the fandom denying it, it was WAY too obvious which is why the whole thing was a joke.

That was so good! I decided to watch it alone in the dark because RTD said it was scary, and it was so worth it. Genuinely quite a scary and tense episode. Sutekh’s new design is so cool too.
And his new design also fits for him being the inspiration of the Egyptian god, Set because he looks like an Anubis.
Maybe I'll get used to it idk but the whole time Ive been hoping sutekh would return to dw I kinda assumed he would look more or less the same. He could have that updated jackal CGI head when the helmet comes off but have the black and red body at least.

Anyone else thinking 'The Boss' and Mrs' Floods true identity will be kept secret and taken into series 15 or beyond? Can't see them being revealed in next weeks episode
Did anyone noticed the master theme in a bit before the name reveal. It was the crescendo during the Utopia or was it Sound of Drums.
Yeah I noticed that too! Haven't seen anyone mentioning yet about that. Wonder why it was playing??
Loving your excitement, Tharries :)
For what it's worth, I haven't watched Pyramids of Mars yet (though I do know about it, generally speaking), and the twist still very much worked for me.
I don't think it's that he's not a dad
He says "yes" and then corrects to "no"
The question was, "Do you have kids?" which would be a no as he's unsure of they're alive
I’ve got a few questions that weren’t part of the plot but how it was promoted beforehand:
Has the whole Roswell incident scene been cut - the whole adventure with the Doctor wearing a whistle etc?
When The Doctor explained regeneration to Ruby, he literally said "We can use it to change our face and hide ourselves away."
Mrs Flood 10 minutes later - "Im always hiding myself away."
She's a Timelord.
Really? I thought thw effects were fine
Sutekh looked dodgy in Pyramids Of Mars after they took the mask off of him.
It was the same voice, Gabriel Woolf played the original Sutekh
We’re really seeing the power of names in this series
I’m sooo glad I watched Pyramids of Mars yesterday
Wish I had😂
It was following Sutekh's whispers.
the finale is always going to top the random episodes surely, the stakes are higher and answers are given
The thing that is at the very forefront of my mind right now is how long as the tardis had that thing attached to it? its been unpredictable since what wild blue yonder? with harsher landings and the groaning its been making.
16:30 The Mara from Kinda was also mentioned as the God of Beasts.
Was it? I gotta listen for that on rewatch or pull up a transcript! Love the Mara. Some of Janet Fielding's best acting.
I loved that
@@R_SENALsnakedance is one of my favourite stories overall
My jaw dropped the whole time it was about to be revealed, what a climax!
I thought leading up to the reveal it was going to be the beast from the satan pit episode
I thought it was going to be the Beast too!
Russell used the Impossible Planet as a template to bring back Sutekh in the future, but who is the Beast in this pantheon of Gods? Also, is Ruby’s mum Susan?
I think the Beast and Sutekh are more or less the same entity
@@gbrogo7139they arent the same, people in-universe just compare both of them to the devil. Sutekh is a classic who villain
Was she also angry when the Daleks and Master were reintroduced?
As Gabriel Woolf also voiced the Beast I wouldn’t be surprised if they retroactively changed the fact that the Beast was Sutekh in some way all along.
My worry here is that RTD has only ever REALLY "stuck the landing" with one of his finales (Parting of the Ways, fight me, none of the rest live up to the first part), so my best guess for next week is:
The stakes escalate constantly and exponentially, it keeps getting worse and worse, and then just after half way we find out who Ruby's mum (and maybe dad) is, and she turns out to be the daughter of a god, or a god and a time lord, and she can access godlike powers, and she just basically makes all the bad stuff unhappen while the Murray Gold score tried to trick the audience into thinking that something well-written is happening instead.
I HOPE I'm wrong, but I BET I'm not
I loved how they did the 3d simulation part. Sutekh has a pretty cool design. Anubus
No. He naturally resembles him. In Egyptian mythology Set, Seth or Sutekh is the father of Anubis.
2. In this episode the doctor said Susan is from a kid the doctor has not had yet or he does not know yet this works with Jenny because he from what I know still thinks she is dead
I know this theory is out there but if by chance I'm right I want proof of it
As you may know, they used the original Sutekh voice actor, who also voiced the Beast in season 2.

speaking as someone who only started with 2005 Who, the way they built up The Master hit hard despite prior to seeing that, not knowing who The Master was. great execution there. same can be said for Sutekh and how they built him up in this episode and season overall.
One of the best episodes of Doctor Who, that cliff hanger was amazing
I’m not a super fan but I’m not a casual either, even for me the reveal was great!
however it does make the idea of this season being a ‘soft reboot’ more laughable: Susan and Sutekh being core to the plot and old companions returning
They mention the Mara and the Malice from the Davison era too.
the masters theme playing before the reveal was a bit confusing.
It was a red herring.
What’s going on with Mrs. Flood? Is Cherry Sunday okay?
Riiight, the Doctor's worried about being a danger to Susan. He freaking abandoned her at 16 years old in an apocalypse with only one shoe!!!
Besides that, absolutely A+ episode!
He didnt want too
To be fair, being abandoned with a singular shoe is funny asf.
He's lost a lot of people since then, he doesn't want the same to happen to Susan
@@DriverHenryWho3245 He's met Susan many times and gotten her own son killed
@@ADifferentLens2345Not according to this story
Sorry but canon is defined by the show
As someone who has not seen classic who but did study classical civilisations, I was like ‘Set???? That’s random’ down to see what Sutek is like tho
Rubys dna is human though?
I'm chucking it out there Ruby Sunday IS River Song
Yeah it is the same voice Gabriel Wolf.
I made sure to rewatch the pyramids of mars
I did and it was established sutekh was last of powerful alien race playing a part not an actual god and was mortal as he died in the time tunnel - then turns up with all these new powers and a god.
@@markcolgan3262to be fair none of the "gods" so far have been gods just very powerful creatures the toymaker ect...
I’m pretty sure that’s the first Doctor Who story I ever saw when the show began airing in America in the mid 70s. I’ll have to go back and watch it again, 50 years later.
@@mythcafe put the ones who are “gods”weren’t killed just banished sutekh dies in pyramids of mars
@@markcolgan3262 He actually sidestepped the time tunnel, as is established in comic form. The doctor just 'guessed' he'd die after 7000 years.
I still think RTD, will have the Doctor recruit the
Guardians, or the Eternals, to help combat Sutekh and his ilk. If not other gods, he'll probably invoke his more traditional enemies, like the Daleks, Cybermen and the Timelords, which would probably include the Master.
Thanks
It would be nice if you got a thankyou from the boy who present's this
I CALLED "SUE TECH" WEEKS AGO WHEN SHE WAS CONFIRMED AS BEING "SUSAN TRIAD, TECH ENTREPRENEUR"... But I honestly thought I was joking by portmanteauing "Sue Tech"
