Ugo, your analysis and insights about this season of Doctor Who would be impressive for anyone, let alone someone who has never watched the show before. You have pointed out things I didn't pick up on and remembered things from earlier episodes I had forgotten, and I've been a Doctor Who fan since 1993! I'm really enjoying your reactions.
Some people are telling you to watch the 60th specials... I don't know what's your plan for Doctor Who after season 1, but I wouldn't recommend watching those, because there's some heavy spoilers for someone that is already familiarised enough with the show. I think that, after season 1 you should go back to the 2005 series 1 episode 1, the episode called "Rose" and watch it normally from there.
Absolutely. They have massive spoilers almost everything that came before. The specials are the capstone of the 2005 iteration of the show. They are coda/ending for almost two decades build up of story and character arcs. Would never recommend them to jump into.
I loved that Mel shows how a companions job can be to call the Doctor to action, lovely as Ruby is, at times she over embraces his emotional crisis, Mel was having none of it.
Yeah the fact that Sutech was so powerful and dangerous that he did not need to be loud just made him that much more frightening. The actor that plays him is so great at projecting all that danger with that quiet voice. I am so glad he was able to reprise the role.
I actually only noticed this small thing after another reactor pointed it out, but Harriet actually cries a little bit during their monologue while talking about how all creation would fall. So I guess the Harbingers actually do have feelings and can act like people, but are still mainly messengers meant to be used for the Doctor Who gods.
That’s what’s making me wonder Maestros Harbinger seemed like he was always under control and seemed to just be created as a child. Harriet and Susan seemed to be normal people until the time is right either sleeper agents or just possessed at the last minute hopefully we get answers
@@Look_Over_There if you look at a lot of the other gods like the eternals guardians the trickster or fenris it's normally bloodlines or bargain makers who end up as harbingers so i imagine sleeper agents wouldn't be hard or far off for example with the trickster most the people he made deals with forget about the deal intill he shows himself so it could be something similar with harbingers.
Your breakdown of how regeneration works was pretty spot on. The Doctor has all the same memories and a lot of the same core emotions and personality traits every time. Regeneration changes the whole body, including brain chemistry, so it can affect personality. It's why some Doctors are more playful, less sociable, or have different likes or dislikes. At the core, though, it's always the same person.
Also although its up for debate wether it was canon as it was only mentioned once back in 2009 but, from the time lords perspective it actually feels like dying, they die and a regenerated version with all their memories carries on but the previous version's consciousness actually dies.
@Look_Over_There That's what 10 felt. Other incarnations of the Doctor have disagreed. 11 notably called him vain for feeling that way and even 14 said it wasn't dying.
@@legendswarble2845 Yeah it's never confirmed either way wether it was just a figure of speech or not but I like the concept for me it adds extra weight to regenerating.
Its so fun to watch you discover this show with this as your first season. Yeah you may not be able to get all the references to the 60 years history of this show, but I can see how much this episode still hooked you haha!
For context: UNIT has been a thing in Doctor Who since 1968, originally run by Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, and run by his daughter Kate Stewart since 2012. The Doctor's granddaughter Susan was a companion from 1963-64. Mel Bush was a companion from 1986-87. The current UNIT tower and many of the staff were introduced last year. Sutekh is a returning villain from 1975. Some of the mentioned gods have appeared before, some haven't, but them being actual gods is a new concept. If you want to see more of the show, I'd recommend starting from the 2005 series 1.
I'm glad you've been enjoying Doctor Who so much, been a blast seeing a newcomers reaction over these past few weeks. I hope you decide to do reactions to Doctor Who, with the revival starting in 2005 when this season ends
If you're interested on who Sutekh is (Within Dr Who), he first appeared in the episode "Pyramids of Mars" from 1975. Not sure where to find this episode outside of the UK though whish is a shame.
I only just noticed that the doctor says that time lords regenerate to save themselves or "hide themselves away", and Ms. Flood specifically says that she's always hiding herself away. Coincidence? Yeah, maybe.
I think it's pretty obvious now she's Susan the Doctor's granddaughter. Since Susan Twist/Triad is not his granddaughter, and Mrs. Flood is still the "big" mystery going into the finale next week, I think that reveal will be important.
@@LvndrHppE2 And what difference does it make it the master is an elderly woman in England? The master was a woman previously, an elderly professor at the end of the universe, etc. etc. Why would you throw your phone now?
I was very curious how well this episode would work to someone unfamiliar with both Sutekh and UNIT, and it's nice to see that it still holds up. Also, lots of other comments are full of spoilers and people explaining lore and answering questions you specifically asked them not to
Absolutely right about the other comments. This is a problem with other reaction channels as well (e.g. the Target Audience, who are watching all of Star Trek for the first time in release order). Ugo was, of course, not quite unfamiliar with UNIT, since they played a supporting role in "73 Yards."
Yep, lots of "new" faces for a newcomer there, but most of them are "old" ones for the rest of us. But shh, spoilers, you'll get to that at your own pace. :) Ha, at that "thoughts and prayers" intro ! ^^
I discovered your channel a few days ago and have been binging these during all my spare time. It’s so fun to watch someone discover Doctor Who for the first time in this new era, so thank you!!!
I was curious to see how this episode would play to somebody working with less knowledge of the show so this was cool! Definitely worth getting into the rest of the show.
Glad to see you enjoying this one. A lot of it was really cool for us longer fans but I had been wondering in the back in my head how penetrable it would be to newer viewers.
You mentioned Anubis. Sutekh is Anubis' father. It is not part of the television series, but in one of the Doctor Who comics, Sutekh takes the form of his son Anubis. I would recommend watching the 3 60th anniversary specials. They were also released on Disney+ to the viewers outside the UK to help provide a background to those that are just now coming to Doctor Who.
@@anthonybernacchi2732 Hahahaha. Well, I look at it as each being a different stage of the Doctor's life rather than separate lives, and that's the stage he's at, I guess.
Their will be a special episode of Tales of the Tardis which comes out the 20th June which features 15 and Ruby talking about the Pyramids of Mars and Sutekh.
Out of all the villians that could have showed up i never guessed it would be sutekh im guessing hes using the tardis to destroy all reality across all timelines but thats just my theory
So... like you, I'm a newcomer. But I started with 2005 instead of 2024. But Sutekh is from the 1963 Era, so even some of those fans who only watched the 2005 era, would not know who that character is~ But can I just say... I'm just glad that I started the Classic Era couple of years ago... and I have watched the Sutekh story (granted I forget whaf happen...), so, I'm all good yo XD
Mel was a companion in the 80s and appeared in the 3 specials that were on before this season and when Ncuti became the Doctor, you really need to watch those… Explains who Rose is too… 👍🏼
ehhh as great as there (and as much as they inform this season arc!) I'm reluctant to ever tell people they MUST watch something with this show. I've never seen the original Zygon serial and Day of the Doctor worked just fine for me, and I've never seen any of 5-7's era and Power of the Doctor worked for me.
@@beejamjam Honestly, now is the best time. There are a whole lot of things in this episode that either are spoiled or can't be explained well enough without watching the 60th specials.
@@beejamjam Yes, there's no point in watching those now until he catches up on the 2005 revival. Most newbies watched those 3 specials first as it was set up as a new jumping on point, but in reality Church on Ruby Road is definitely a better jumping on point for those who want to go back.
You could watch the 2005 series of Doctor Who in between Season 1 and 2 if you can't get enough of the show. I wouldn't reccommend the 60th specials first just because they rely on you knowing what happens in the 2005 series.
I have a crazy theory about all the 4th wall breaking. The One Who Waits is supposed to be coming from beyond the veil of the universe, and whenever the Toymaker or the Maestro or Mrs Flood breaks the 4th wall they’re talking to him and all the other gods and monsters beyond that veil. Our screen is the boundary between their universe and ours. I also definitely think Ruby is from beyond that veil and her presence has been slowly prying open a door so they can all come through. Mrs Flood could be actual Susan, or she could have been sent to keep Ruby safe for The One Who Waits.
I did rewatch Pyramids of Mars after watching this episode. For me, it didn’t help make any sense of this story. FYI - I’ve been watching Doctor Who since the mid 80’s and Ugo has a better grasp of understanding Doctor Who than I do. Such a wonderful instinct is rare and I will follow him from now on, just so I can know what the heck is going on!!! 😂
Very nice seeing you experience your first season 😁 To answer a few of your questions: - The Doctors granddaughter Susan was the very first companion of the series all the way back in 1963! He left her on earth in a particular episode, and has only met her again once under very special circumstances in his 5th incarnation in the mid 80s. - The Doctor always regenerates on-screen, he/she has done it 16 (technically 17) times now (15 "Doctors", one "War Doctor", and one aborted regeneration) - Sutekh is a very old villian from the 4th Doctors era in the mid 70s, from one of his best episodes - Mel is an old companion of the 6th and 7th Doctors from the 80s - Time Lords have been known to use a device called a chameleon arch to lock their true selves away and hide in plain sight as a human with false memories, a major Time Lord character has previously done this in conjunction with a regeneration. - Kate Stewart is the daughter of Alistair Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart, who was a major character all throughout the 2nd through 7th Doctors run in the classic series. - Gods mentioned like The Trickster and The Mara have indeed been villains in the past also. - The TARDIS is not just a machine, but a living thinking entity with a soul 😁 I hope you have tones of fun with the series going forward.
Should have known the finale villain would be from the 4th Doctor era- just by looking at the recent logo, that matches that era. So obvious and in plain sight😂 something the Doctor himself has been known to miss. Ironically🤪
Yeah some of those characters at UNIT have been there before. Rose is a character from the three specials in 2023, and her mum was a companion of a previous Doctor. Mel (the redhead) was the Doctor’s companion in the 80s and the actress is an absolute legend of stage and screen in the UK. Kate (the leader of UNIT) has been in it quite a few times over the years starting way back in about 2012 with Matt Smith’s Doctor so she’s been a constant through five Doctors now. Her character’s dad also worked for UNIT and worked with the Doctor in the 70s and 80s. I think the others are mostly new characters!
He didn’t say that though? I mean, I’ve just rewatched the discussion/outro bit and he says at 20:25 ‘The rest of the team - I’m guessing some of those actors have been in the franchise for some length of time?’ And he had the inflection of a question on the sentence, almost like he was asking. Sorry if it offended you, but I was answering the implied question, and I gave zero story spoilers in doing so.
So there are a lot of old Who references here, Sutekh was last in the Fourth Doctor episode 'Pyramid of Mars.' Where Sutekh was imprisoned under a pyramid, trapped by a energy field beamed from Mars. He killed then animated the corpse an archeologist named Marcus Scarman, who first uttered the line "I bring Sutekh's gift of death.' He was defeated by the Doctor when he used a space time tunnel to leave the pyramid after he was freed, the Doctor used part of the Tardis to move the end of the tunnel into the far future aging Sutekh's physical body out of existence after thousands of years. His classic line when challenged by the Doctor for using his powers for evil "Evil? Your evil is my good. I am Sutekh the Destroyer. Where I tread, I leave nothing but dust and darkness...I find that good!" This was also the first episode where the Doctor confirmed changing the future was possible, when asked why they couldn't just leave cause they knew the world didn't end in 1911, the Doctor moves the Tardis to 1980 to show a blasted rock where nothing lived. "You mean the future can be chosen?" "Not chosen shaped, it takes a being of Sutekh's almost limitless power to destroy the future."
Sutekh makes the Trickster, the Master, Davros and the Cybermen look like birthday party clowns in comparison. He is among the baddest of the bad that the Doctor ever faced. He even makes the Black Guardian and Omega look tame. The Doctor is right to be afraid. He’s basically the Beast at full strength with an Egyptian theme.
I think you are asking excellent questions, better than the reviewers I’ve seen that know doctor who well imo. Also not DW related but did the voice remind anyone else of when the aliens in Independence Day are speaking through the scientist?
Setekh/Set has their own (unknown) animal that they are associated with known as the "Set-animal" I think they were going for that but it does also somewhat resemble a jackal on its own.
Yeah - a handful of the gods mentioned by Harriet Arbinger have appeared in the Whoniverse before, but half of them are new so they might be foreshadowing for the future...
For those who don't know, Sutekh fought Tom Baker's fourth doctor in the Pyramids of Mars storyline. Based on the egyptian god Set, he is one of the few beings who can change future time, like Maestro did but on a greater scale. Originally imprisoned on Mars by other egyptian god allusions (an alien race called Osirans) including his brother Horus, he used a man obsessed with egypt to bring his army of robo-mummies to 1911 earth and then free him. He was supposed to have died of old age in that story, so him being back is weird.
rose noble, the girl the doctor immediately ran up and hugged, is sort of the doctor's niece (in that found-family sense, you know); the daughter of a previous companion. they consider each other close family anyway. mel was also a former companion, from really late in the classic series; she has been popping up again just recently. she's a computer programmer, though she didn't really get a chance to do much of it her first time around. 😅 as another former companion like her mum, rose also considers her sort of a mad aunt. in egyptian mythology, sutekh (or set, seth; you know how the original writing has all these slightly different readings) is actually the father of anubis-so you're right on track. he also appears in the classic series, just the once but in a really famous and well-regarded serial. it's enough to know that he was one of the most dangerous and frightening things the doctor has faced-and that was when sutekh was trapped, immobilized, frozen. but now he's free.
oh, and about regeneration and the "susan" speculation early on: what the doctor was saying was, it was maybe possible that his granddaughter susan had regenerated in such a way as to hide herself-even *from* herself-thereby explaining to ruby why he didn't immediately know her on sight, and more broadly suggesting why he couldn't be sure if she had or hadn't survived the genocide and didn't really know where to begin looking for her.
There's lots of other enemies, like daleks , cybermen, sea devils, the master(an evil time lord), so many of them And regeneration is just used mostly for when they switch actors since 1960s , Mel is a classic who companion
I would say you should start watching the revival from series 1 from 2005 onwards till you catch up to the present after this season is finished since you won't be getting new episodes for a long tine (first new episode is this Christmas and then the next season is the next year in 2025) so you will have enough time to catch up till next year.
Don't worry about not knowing nothing about sutekh, because basically no one does. I have started at 2005 season 1 and I feel like I know the tip of the iceberg.
and this is incorrect. that would be Anubis. so huge fail at history lesson from doctor who which was initially supposed to be an educational program lol. Sutekh aka Set(h) is god of war and violence basically. So more god of chaos if you will. Unless doctor who is trying to retcon actual history now instead of just the history of its own show lol
Doctors keep their memories and experiences but the personality changes with their face, so they are all kinda different like you originally thought. I’d love to see you react to the first reboot with Christopher Eccelson some time, I really enjoy your reaction content
They named a bunch of previous enemies, toymaker, maestro, trickster, reprobate, Mara, and then a bunch of related that might line up to other enemies. In the end I don't think you necessarily have to have watched the classic episodes to get, though they do help. I think they set it up wonderfully easy to understand. "And standing on high, is the mother and father and other of them all. For the God of all God's has returned, and his names are many. His name has been Set, and Seth, and Sithifer, and his once true name forever more is Sutekh" Sutekh/Set/Seth is the Egyptian God of death, deserts, storms, disorder, and violence. He is the usurper who murdered and mutilated his brother Osiris to take control. He brings death with him wherever he goes.
I really do hope you go back and watch ‘Rose’ once this season is done. There’s so much throughout the entirety of New Who that would explain so much moving forward with this new season. And so many characters you’d absolutely love
Sutekh and The Toymaker have appeared in classic Who in the 1960s and 70s, and a few beings with god-like powers have popped up, who were actually advanced aliens. Maestro is a new creation. Doctor Who is not usually about gods. I think the premise of this season is that, thanks to one of the more recent special episodes from 2023, the walls of reality have been broken and now gods from beyond the universe have been allowed in. The Doctor, in spite of all the faces and forms he has taken, is always a continuation of the same character and - yes - all but a couple of them have been seen to regenerate onscreen. Although the character is always the same person, the regeneration process is such a jumbling process that the personality of each Doctor is usually very distinct unto itself. You never know what he's going to be like. It's one of the ways that the show stays so fresh over the decades.
Rose is Donna’s daughter who was companion to the 10th Doctor. She met up with him again in his 14th incarnation. All the faces that doing around him in the Rogue episode are his prior faces (the past actors have taken the role). Sutekh met the 4th Doctor and fan favorite companion in the 1975 episodes Pyramids of Mars. It’s actually story where an archaeologist stumbles upon Sutekh tomb, and becomes his avatar. When you go back and watch those episodes, you see a lot of Easter eggs that were embedded in this series telling you exactly what was coming; verbiage, even scenes that are almost identical. It was being telegraphed all along, who the big bad was going to be. Susan fell in love and the 1st Doctor locked her out of the Tardis telling her she deserved her own life basically… that was 1964 series. Carol Ann Ford who played Susan is still alive so if they are going to bring her back for a regeneration scene, they likely should do it soon as she’s in her 70s or 80s now. She played as a teenager in her early 20s.
Sutekh's been waiting for a LONG time. So (non-spoilers) backstory for Sutekh: During the dark times, before order and light in the time of blood and darkness and the power of words, the God Ra split their essence into 3 seperate entities to better protect the great flame. These were Iris, Osiris and Sutekh. However, the power of the flame was not enough for Sutekh's ambition and he saw his siblings, and the deciples of light, as rivals to his power, coming to belive that all life was a potential threat and thus his enemy. Secretly at first, Sutekh bided his time honeing his power and following. Osiris became suspicious, but one day the Great Demon, only known as the Destoyer, returned to the universe and the Triad of gods were forced to overlook their suspicions toward one another to banish him to another dimension. It was Sutekh who delivered the winning blow to the Demon, further cementing his delusions of superiority, but halting his siblings actions against him briefly enough for Sutekh to finally make his move. And so began the Ghost Wars, later renamed by the Timelords as the first great time war. During this war, the wake of Sutekh's destruction spawned evils such as the hoards of the original great vampires which then allied themselves with the Carionite witches and Deathsmiths of Goth to wage war on a more mortal scale. Here, the early Timelords led by Rassilon joined the deciples of light and swore to destroy the spawn of Sutekh. Taking on the title of the Destoyer, Sutekh ravaged reality spreding his gift of death, with extensions of his will manifesting as more seperate entities such as the Beast. This forced those members of the Pantheon of discord, who hadn't yet been banished from the universe or punished along with the eternals, into hiding. (I'm skipping quite a bit, theres a lot here with Anubis and the Trickster etc) Sutekh was eventually nerfed and contained. Held prisoner within a Pyramid on a planet that would later be known as Mars. There, Sutekh the Destoyer waited for millennia, falling into obscurity. The Pyramid would be found again by the native Marshians, but the evil deep inside was so strong that they could physically sense it, so forbade exploration into it. That's all I can give on Sutekh without going into spoilers for classic who. I could give more about the time between his TV appearances, but I'd have to spoil the end of a certain story to do so, so I won't. Hope this helps clear up a little bit?
I heard the Masters song during her evil turn, but I also heard it during the Sutekh turn. Not River She's technically dead, not Romana she's in another Universe, don't know if Jenny can Regen, Black Guardian to small of a character for him to hide out as... Rani or the Master is the best bet. The Doctor and her haven't interacted so it's more likely that she is a Time Lady...
Actually what he says in the first episodes is “no one knew until someone showed up” or something like that. Implication: dr knows when he tells the story.
I'd argue that if he is planning to go back to the 2005 revival after the finale, that he'd be better waiting to watch the 3 specials. There's some direct tie-ins here, but he seems to be picking up on the things he's missed rather than just be oblivious. I think the specials contains far too many spoilers for anyone not familiar with the 2005 era of the show.
@@SeeJay81 That's my take as well. While there are some things that would be clearer from watching Star Beast, Wild Blue Yonder, and The Giggle, they also contain some spoilers for some big events up to that point. It's also enough to have picked up on the groaning sounds of the TARDIS. Anything else, if the Doctor seems to know whatever characters, that's (mostly) probably enough till caught up with the 2005 series till now. Anything more than those 3 (though not mentioned in bobfather7355's comment or replies to it), maybe trusted sources to advise, "Here's some episodes of Classic Who you probably should squeeze in." If that's something he'd be interested in doing. Those all caught up will know which episodes are more or less essential, but care must be taken to avoid spoilers. Because the classic run combined with 2005 Revival Who (and 2023/24 Who) kind of sounds a lot longer than it is to someone casually looking, when not factoring in episode count and individual runtime vs story count and total runtime. And even then, that's a lot more catching up to do it all. Particularly when this season and next were shot so close together, and probably won't be a huge gap as it's been in some cases previously. The other thing to consider is a reactor's release schedule for whatever series (or multiple ones) at the same time, and how much time they can commit to it while not negatively impacting their lives or livelihoods.
@@TheLexaBlack I could be misquoting but I'm pretty sure RTD said there will be one season each year around the same time, and 1 Christmas special so we can probably expect season 2 to debut in May 2025.
i mean the way hes done it here avoids some spoilers for the other 60th anniversary specials. so going back to 2005 assuming next episode doesnt spoil jodis regeneration. but then the chances of him catching up before next season which would most certainly probably spoil the 60th specials. theres really no good way to do this any more
Hi 😊 long time Doctor Who fan here. If you have time, try to watch the 1975 Doctor Who story, Pyramids of Mars. This will explain a lot for you and the chance to see a brilliant classic Who story. I look forward to seeing your video next week. 😊
There are so many things that the Doctor has said this sea season that, obviously Susan was a misdirect... (maybe) its hard to know what's misdirect and what is important...
Yes, he started with "Ruby Road" (which, confusing as some elements of the later episodes may be starting there, is more narratively coherent as a starting point than the 2023 specials).
Ruby is Susan and used the thing to make her human and forget she’s a time lord like the doctor done in series 3 with the fob watch. The person who dropped ruby/susan off on Xmas eve is Susan but the original Susan so ostensibly she’s dropping herself off 🤷🏻♂️🙈😂 or something around the lines. Ruby’s mother will be the doctors daughter jenny who is now the kind woman regenerated from original jenny 🤷🏻♂️ either that or original Jenny will return. Just a guess and then what if ruby dies and then regenerates into new companion varada the actress from boom. And similar to capaldi choosing the face of guy from fires if pompeii as a reminder who he is.
If you want to learn about Sutekh, read a synopsis of 'Pyramids of Mars' (original Doctor #4) or you could watch the series episode (except it's really old and the FX look ropey now)
I disagree I find the ok effects much more creepier than that crappy CGI which I find dates more than the old effects he should go and watch it its a great story it stands the test of time.
In all, we’ve seen very few Time Lords regenerate in the TV stories. I think we’re still under 10, but I’d prefer you see even the most minor ones without them being pointed out
Love your content! Do you think you will ever watch other doctor who episodes (I suggest starting from the 9th doctor/first reboot), it might be a good thing to do inbetween season 1 and 2 of new who
@antonjbleasdale Not necessarily always the case it depends how long the actor wants to stay or how long they been contracted to do it some Doctors do only 3 years some do it longer the only actors who have played the Doctor that went beyond the 3 season limit so far is Jon Pertwee and Tom Baker.
So Rogue was seemingly made up by the writters of that episode. which makes me a little sad because almost every episode has been written by RTD and if Rogue was his creation there is 0 chance he would be written off. However after that performance and the chemistry they were kind enough to leave it open ended so we can go find him later which hopefully we do. Doubtful it would be this season though
Ugo, your analysis and insights about this season of Doctor Who would be impressive for anyone, let alone someone who has never watched the show before. Amazing.

Your breakdown of how regeneration works was pretty spot on. The Doctor has all the same memories and a lot of the same core emotions and personality traits every time.
I have a feeling the “we will get him” was an Elon Musk joke
Pretty sure it’s Trump or Boris
I thought it was a possible reference to someone that’ll come into the story later
Could’ve been Mark Zuckerberg, it was smart to be that vague.
I thought that too, but now I believe its a reference to a character coming in Season 2
Ahh that would be hilarious.
If you're interested on who Sutekh is (Within Dr Who), he first appeared in the episode "Pyramids of Mars" from 1975.
Not sure where to find this episode outside of the UK though whish is a shame.
Britbox and Tubi in the US at the very least
You can use a VPN
Tubi has it for free with adds
@@centaursoundclash I wish that worked lol
@@phlippy does it not work for bbc IPlayer? It works using Disney plus here in the uk.
I only just noticed that the doctor says that time lords regenerate to save themselves or "hide themselves away", and Ms. Flood specifically says that she's always hiding herself away. Coincidence? Yeah, maybe.
No
Ther ar leaks of mrs flood in s2 timetravelinh.
I think she is the master
@@SkyLightKeythe Master is a Timelord lol
I think it's pretty obvious now she's Susan the Doctor's granddaughter. Since Susan Twist/Triad is not his granddaughter, and Mrs. Flood is still the "big" mystery going into the finale next week, I think that reveal will be important.
If the master is an elderly woman living in England, I will throw my phone.
Ha, at that "thoughts and prayers" intro ! ^^
5:49 "Who's that?" Doctor: "That's Mel!" hahahaha
Bro I love your reactions so much!
I discovered your channel a few days ago and have been binging these during all my spare time. It’s so fun to watch someone discover Doctor Who for the first time in this new era, so thank you!!!
I was curious to see how this episode would play to somebody working with less knowledge of the show so this was cool! Definitely worth getting into the rest of the show.
you are right about egyptian gods,Sutekh is also known as Set & Seth
The way I see it, new body, new personality, same memories, skills, and knowledge. And yes. We see it happen quite a lot.
It's a bit of a cock up as Sutekh is meant to have the head of a Donkey and in the show he has green eyes.
UgoWatch, amazing video keep it up bro
If I can hear the lines in the voices of previous Doctors, I feel like they've got it.
Especially when there are other lines that you can't hear in any voice other than that of the current Doctor. ("Show me the lovin'!")
Tales shows the complete Old Who story edited together with new footage filmed at the beginning and end.
Out of all the villians that could have showed up i never guessed it would be sutekh im guessing hes using the tardis to destroy all reality across all timelines but thats just my theory
Not only me who felt certain vibes between The Doctor and Ibrahim 😂
It's interesting - in _The Pyramids of Mars_ Sutekh's harbinger was a guy in a fez called Ibrahim Namin, a secret worshipper of the old gods.
So... like you, I'm a newcomer. But I started with 2005 instead of 2024.
But Sutekh is from the 1963 Era, so even some of those fans who only watched the 2005 era, would not know who that character is~
But can I just say... I'm just glad that I started the Classic Era couple of years ago... and I have watched the Sutekh story (granted I forget whaf happen...), so, I'm all good yo XD
I'm glad to see you're getting just as excited by the show as more long-term fans!!!
Mel was a companion in the 80s and appeared in the 3 specials that were on before this season and when Ncuti became the Doctor, you really need to watch those… Explains who Rose is too… 👍🏼
She only appeared in the third
ehhh as great as there (and as much as they inform this season arc!) I'm reluctant to ever tell people they MUST watch something with this show. I've never seen the original Zygon serial and Day of the Doctor worked just fine for me, and I've never seen any of 5-7's era and Power of the Doctor worked for me.
only after he's caught up on new who!
I love this reaction! It's so rare to have someone completely new and unspoiled! How fun.
I’ll definitely be rewatching Pyramids Of Mars (1975) after Sutekh’s noble return! 😉 And it’s the same voice actor too! 😃
Great reaction to an incredible episode!
Very nice seeing you experience your first season 😁
To answer a few of your questions:
- The Doctors granddaughter Susan was the very first companion of the series all the way back in 1963! He left her on earth in a particular episode, and has only met her again once under very special circumstances in his 5th incarnation in the mid 80s.
- The Doctor always regenerates on-screen, he/she has done it 16 (technically 17) times now (15 "Doctors", one "War Doctor", and one aborted regeneration)
- Sutekh is a very old villian from the 4th Doctors era in the mid 70s, from one of his best episodes
- Mel is an old companion of the 6th and 7th Doctors from the 80s
- Time Lords have been known to use a device called a chameleon arch to lock their true selves away and hide in plain sight as a human with false memories, a major Time Lord character has previously done this in conjunction with a regeneration.
- Kate Stewart is the daughter of Alistair Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart, who was a major character all throughout the 2nd through 7th Doctors run in the classic series.
- Gods mentioned like The Trickster and The Mara have indeed been villains in the past also.
- The TARDIS is not just a machine, but a living thinking entity with a soul 😁
I hope you have tones of fun with the series going forward.
This has been a very musical season. TRIAD = a musical chord.
Genesis' (Harriet's) monologue was scary and satisfying!
Should have known the finale villain would be from the 4th Doctor era- just by looking at the recent logo, that matches that era. So obvious and in plain sight😂 something the Doctor himself has been known to miss. Ironically🤪
NGL, this episode had me on edge for the last 10 minutes. I LOVED it!
duuuuude it’s so nice to see doctor who from a completely fresh perspective
Why are you lying to yourself. This is just a high school musical or play for adults.
@@almanediligence9505 that’s your opinion, but i’m enjoying it
Yeah some of those characters at UNIT have been there before.
"Don't tell me"
Proceeds to tell him...
1 minute in and im already smiling after a bad day. cant wait for the finale next week
I was in Highschool when Ruby Sunday was born XD this makes me feel old since im a 85er
I think you are asking excellent questions, better than the reviewers I’ve seen that know doctor who well imo. Also not DW related but did the voice remind anyone else of when the aliens in Independence Day are speaking through the scientist?
The fourth wall thing with Mrs. Flood maybe she is Deadpool. I mean Who now exists in a Disney universe.😂
you are so fun!!! i love your doctor who videos
Ur reaction to this episode is awesome. Thank you! x
Sutekh was imprisoned in an Egyptian pyramid on Earth.
The power source that was keeping him imprisoned was on Mars.
rose noble, the girl the doctor immediately ran up and hugged, is sort of the doctor's niece (in that found-family sense, you know); the daughter of a previous companion. they consider each other close family anyway.
mel was also a former companion, from really late in the classic series; she has been popping up again just recently. she's a computer programmer, though she didn't really get a chance to do much of it her first time around.
Hilarious that Susan was getting all of the side-eye when Mrs. Flood was a threat laying in wait 😂
There's lots of other enemies, like daleks , cybermen, sea devils, the master(an evil time lord), so many of them
And regeneration is just used mostly for when they switch actors since 1960s , Mel is a classic who companion
I would say you should start watching the revival from series 1 from 2005 onwards till you catch up to the present after this season is finished since you won't be getting new episodes for a long tine (first new episode is this Christmas and then the next season is the next year in 2025) so you will have enough time to catch up till next year.
i watched all 13 series of new who in 80 days (thats only watching like 2-8 eps a day) so its definitely possible
Love the random Rogue reactions lmao
The Toy maker and now Sutekh! they are digging up the really old and godlike bad guys for the show now :D
Where I Tread I Leave Nothing but Dust and Darkness
Fabulous. Thank you. Love it.
Don't worry about not knowing nothing about sutekh, because basically no one does. I have started at 2005 season 1 and I feel like I know the tip of the iceberg.
Sutekh is the god of death, usually known as Set in egyptian mythology, he has appeared in only one story in the 70s (Pyramids of Mars)
and this is incorrect. that would be Anubis. so huge fail at history lesson from doctor who which was initially supposed to be an educational program lol. Sutekh aka Set(h) is god of war and violence basically. So more god of chaos if you will. Unless doctor who is trying to retcon actual history now instead of just the history of its own show lol
@@SoTOreo oh, very interesting that they made that change then.
His name has been Set, and Seth, and Sithifer, and his once true name forever more is Sutekh"
Sutekh/Set/Seth is the Egyptian God of death, deserts, storms, disorder, and violence.
Understand why, but better if you don't spoil all of that for Ugo...
So maybe you want to go back and heavily edit?
17:08 fantastic
Sutekh's been waiting for a LONG time. So (non-spoilers) backstory for Sutekh:
During the dark times, before order and light in the time of blood and darkness and the power of words, the God Ra split their essence into 3 seperate entities to better protect the great flame.
(I'm skipping quite a bit, theres a lot here with Anubis and the Trickster etc)
Sutekh was eventually nerfed and contained.
Mrs. Flood. Is she something new, or the master, River, Jenny, Romana, the Rani, the Black Guardian? So much fun theorizing about who she is.
Anubis, in Greek Mythology, is actually the son of Sutekh.
Sutekh, the 4th Doctor's nemesis. Still the most beloved Doctor by the way despite Tennant and Smith.
You should go back and watch the 3 60th anniversary specials and the Christmas special if you haven't already. On your own time before next episode.
I second this. Definitely before next episode! I wish everyone started with those instead of "Season 1".
@@TheLexaBlack I could be misquoting but I'm pretty sure RTD said there will be one season each year around the same time, and 1 Christmas special so we can probably expect season 2 to debut in May 2025.
i mean the way hes done it here avoids some spoilers for the other 60th anniversary specials. so going back to 2005 assuming next episode doesnt spoil jodis regeneration. but then the chances of him catching up before next season which would most certainly probably spoil the 60th specials. theres really no good way to do this any more
Sutekh has fought the Doctor multiple times. He hates him so much.
Hi 😊 long time Doctor Who fan here. If you have time, try to watch the 1975 Doctor Who story, Pyramids of Mars. This will explain a lot for you and the chance to see a brilliant classic Who story. I look forward to seeing your video next week. 😊
All hail Sutekh!
After this season I’d DEFINITELY watch the 2005 series, you do see the regeneration scenes 😊
Damn, you just _KNOW_ Sutekh is one scary mofo when he manages to creep out a black guy.
Two black guys! 🙂
I’m sorry, but I can’t have you reacting to a 45 minute episode next week. It just wouldn’t be fair to anyone (Next week’s finale is 55 minutes)
20:00 There weren't really references. I'm not sure how some of the fandom predicted Sutekh.
There are so many things that the Doctor has said this sea season that, obviously Susan was a misdirect... (maybe) its hard to know what's misdirect and what is important...
Did you start with "Ruby Road"? Rose Noble was in one or two of the specials just before that.
Yes, he started with "Ruby Road" (which, confusing as some elements of the later episodes may be starting there, is more narratively coherent as a starting point than the 2023 specials).
@@anthonybernacchi2732 I can see that. It's a popular starting point. I wondered which it was.
It was fun to see Sutekh, but there was no story in The Legend of Ruby Sunday. This episode was no more than a narrative prologue to the next episode.
Yes definitely watch it. One of the best classic who.
Sutekh was from 1975, so I think most people won't get the reference.
Also if u want to get some context to some doctor who I recommend watching some doctor edits there some absolutely incredible emotional ones
💜
In all, we’ve seen very few Time Lords regenerate in the TV stories. I think we’re still under 10, but I’d prefer you see even the most minor ones without them being pointed out
I think the list is Doctor, Master, General, Romana, + the Let’s Kill Hitler Spoiler. Then implicit regens for Borusa and Rassilon.

this doctor is the 15th doctor and he's the exact same person, every 3 seasons he regenerates to a new actor
tom baker done 7 seasons
@antonjbleasdale Not necessarily always the case it depends how long the actor wants to stay or how long they been contracted to do it some Doctors do only 3 years some do it longer the only actors who have played the Doctor that went beyond the 3 season limit so far is Jon Pertwee and Tom Baker.
Hope you’ve been able to watch ‘Tales of The Tardis, Pyramids of Mars’?
So Rogue was seemingly made up by the writters of that episode. which makes me a little sad because almost every episode has been written by RTD and if Rogue was his creation there is 0 chance he would be written off. However after that performance and the chemistry they were kind enough to leave it open ended so we can go find him later which hopefully we do. Doubtful it would be this season though
