    TTE pilot with around 100 flights here. Some helpful mods:
    -Move the ESC forward and removing the plastic exhaust tubes will help with cooling greatly
    -require soldering, but split the ailerons into their own channels for Crow… this airplane lands amazing with Crow
    -Switch out the prop for 13x4. Much less current draw and heat but with nice thrust
    FYI this airplane can also take a beating in the sky. I’ve pulled 9 G’s on maneuvers frequently with no issues. Great airplane!

      How to you setup crow on the TTE ?

    • @CumbersomeDinosaur
      @CumbersomeDinosaur 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@LifenSantaBarbara you need to reset the receiver and move the ailerons so they each have their own separate channel. Then you have to cut/split the harness and add a DuPont connector bc they are currently set up to same channel. The rest is done in the Tx. Basically do the opposite of “flapperons”

    I tried hitting thrust reverse mid-flight with my RV-7 recently. I must not have had the prop nut on tight enough because it torqued right off along with the spinner. Never found either and Horizon Hobby doesn't sell that prop nut by itself. Only with the motor. So, to anyone reading this, learn from my mistake: Make sure your prop is on there securely if you want to play with thrust reverse in the air!

      Take the prop shaft to any hardware/automotive shop. The prop nuts are regular nuts & can be gotten almost anywhere 🤷. Most are 5/16".
      I got tired of THAT crap happening, so i did the research

      What more needs finished on it. I use to build and fly DUCTED FAN jets from fiberglass with foam cut wings. I had to fiberglass the wings then fill it all with gap sealer. Sand then paint. Just beautiful finishes!!! So I can take your P-51and finish it for you then forward it to whomever. I'm on disability with nothing to do. Lemme know. I'll just do it to do it also. No charge.

The hobby shop didn't have the float set is stock, so he bought the TT Evo so he could have the floats and gave me the plane!! 😲 Aren't kids amazing!! Brian, I live in FL I've been flying a sport cub S2. ANY wind and its ALL OVER the place. Am I just trying to advance into a bigger more powerful plane too quickly? I don't really have any problems flying the sport cub it just seems to get tossed around a lot. I don't know anyone in the hobby. Does that get better with a little bit larger plane?

    • @BrianPhillipsRC
      @BrianPhillipsRC  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, they get a lot better dealing with wind as they get bigger, but wind will always be a factor, even when you're into way more advanced planes.
      As for another choice that might get you flying in more circumstances, the Turbo Timber Evo would be a good choice, but it's a BIG leap from the Sport Cub S UMX, just so you don't feel like I mislead you in some way.
      Also, the UMX Turbo Timber and Timber X are GREAT choices too...but you need a REAL transmitter, if you want to really take advantage of these BNF planes...
      Tx bit.ly/3J05xSj - NX8 or more, if you really want to save a few bucks on very temporal middle steps
      Timber bit.ly/3OjD6jf - I prefer the Turbo Timber Evo 1.5m OR either of the UMX planes given your circumstances, and keep in mind, we have done all of them...so there's footage out NOW that you can look over.

      @@BrianPhillipsRC Thanks for the awesome and thorough reply!!! I have a DX6E Radio but I would like at least an 8 CH. I deffinitely want a plan with flaps and would really like to have reverse thrust as well. I flew the sport cub yesterday in about 10 MPH gust and the poor thing was just getting tossed around. I was able to force it around but at WOT it was barely able to fly forward through the wind. Greatly appreciate your suggestions. I'll be doing a deeper dive on them as they were already on my radar.

    Add crow and explain how to program the NX8 for it please.

    • @BrianPhillipsRC
      @BrianPhillipsRC  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've used crow and have demonstrated how to do it, but I won't be changing this plane. It flies amazing on it's stock BNF setup. To add crow you'd basically have to tear out the Rx, and install a bigger one, since all the channels are used up as it is ;( If you want to do it, we added crow on the FMS Ranger 1220mm as well as the FMS Cessna 182, among others.

    Guys, this is the Builtin I mentioned about moving the ESC...
    Product: E-flite® Turbo Timber Evolution BNF Basic and PNP (EFL105250, EFL105275)
    Issue: When flying on hot days (85+˚F/29+˚C), especially when flying aggressively with 4-cell batteries, the ESC can enter Thermal Protection mode (which reduces the maximum power to 60%).
    What To Do:
    Before running the motor, move the ESC from its original location under the battery tray to the front of the compartment. This change allows for better cooling, and prevents the ESC from entering Thermal Protection mode under the same conditions.
    To change the placement of the ESC for improved cooling, follow these steps:
    1.Carefully slide the ESC to the front of the compartment below the battery tray.
    2.Carefully pull the battery power leads and IC3® connector out from under the tray. Ensure the leads are not under strain or pressure.
    3.Check to make sure the motor power leads are not touching the rotating part of the motor. Ensure the leads are not under strain or pressure.
    TIP: Use a zip tie, hook and look strap, etc. to carefully bundle the wire leads and secure them away from the motor.
    We apologize for this inconvenience.

    This was great . Thanks for the radio tips on how to set up reverse thrust . You do a good job explaining this stuff . I've just started flying my TT EVO and it really is an awesome plane . I felt really confident with it from the first flight so i'd like to practise using reverse thrust on this before trying it on some of the other planes I have that could really use it .
    That's me , I;m just getting back into flying after a very long break . I was into mostly helicopters and the collective pitch models had a steep learning curve back then .
    The new Spektrum stuff with AS3X and Safe is by far the best , and it's so much easier to set up than it used to be . I've figured out most of what i need to do fairly intuitively ., but I really appreciate the forward programming and downloadable radio and receiver models .

    • @BrianPhillipsRC
      @BrianPhillipsRC  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Totally agree - the Spektrum stuff just seems to work really good, even though it can take a bit to figure out at first, then you get a really nice product at the end. The Reflex stabilizer from FMS and the Vortex from Arrows have been nice additions, but they're still not as refined as the AS3X from Spektrum, in my experience.

    Hi Brian , can you tell me what the slats do and how the airplane acts with the slats on.

    • @BrianPhillipsRC
      @BrianPhillipsRC  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Slats increase drag, reduce stall speed, and allow for higher AOA without stalling. AKA they make the plane more STOL capable.
      They're basically like Flaps, almost exactly in their function, only they're on the front of the wing. They are also FIXED, in this application, rather than controlled, or gravity operated.
      I like them, but I really like slow flight.

    • @BrianPhillipsRC
      @BrianPhillipsRC  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Technically yes, but it'll be a lot of work, and I definitely don't think it's worth it - SOME DO.
      Crow is not "hard" to add, but it's all about if you have to plop in a more expensive Rx to accomplish all the needs.
      We're gonna be adding it on our 2M SWS (the balsa wood one) soon, but that one has the equipment to do it built in, only just setup and a little re-wiring, whereas this 1.5m offering would need to bump up (If I'm remembering what Rx it has correctly & Assuming you don't want to give anything else up)

    I just purchased a Timber Evo and my first flight was today. The entire front ripped off the plane on takeoff and the prop damaged the body of the plane. It looks like 4 metal bars connect somehow from the factory. They do not line up well and I am not sure what happend. I assume this was a factory defect but have you ever heard of this happening?

    • @BrianPhillipsRC
      @BrianPhillipsRC  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've never heard of it happening on maiden, but I have personally had it happen to me on my red and white (original 1.5m) Timber (NOT Turbo or Turbo EVO)...and it was crazy...the whole battery and esc pulled out - it was hilarious, but also super annoying, since I was trying to sell the plane, and was showing a demo of how nice it still was!!! I ended up giving it to the guy for free, and he had it fixed in like 10 minutes, BUT I would be pissed if that happened ON MAIDEN!

      I share this all the time, so try watching this explanation on any of many Unbox, Build, Radio Setup videos. This short description won't do it justice...
      AS3X - Artificial Stabilization Three Axis - This is used to help the plane keep going the direction it's going. It will help mitigate the effects of wind, thermals, down-drafts, etc...and help you feel more in control, as an RC pilot.
      SAFE - Sensor Assisted Flight Envelope - This uses AS3X, and adds another layer to keep the plane level, when you let go of the sticks. I like to tall this feature "Auto-leveling" to the laymen, but it's got some more features too, like limiting your bank and pitch angles, to help keep you out of trouble. You can, of course, tune many of these values to make the plane respond the way you want it to respond, but most of the time, if you need / want SAFE, you're going to be on the beginner side of things, and won't have the wherewithal to make such adjustments. This is where we come in - watch our Unbox Build Radio Setup videos, and we'll help you figure this stuff out. It takes time and some effort, but a well tuned plane will be the envy of most RC clubs...and you'll enjoy a much higher survivability and enjoyment.

    I love my Evo TT. But I opted to remove the leading edge slats, as I thought it has plenty of lift even without.
    I also removed the internal spring retainers in the landing gear springs...this stops the end coils from bending.

    Brian, I was hoping you could give your input on a controversial issue. Do you prefer the TTE with or without flaps? Do you notice better slow flight performance? Some say that the scale of the plane prevents the slats from increasing the potential AoA.

    • @BrianPhillipsRC
      @BrianPhillipsRC  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think you mean with or without SLATS (right???)
      100% Slats ON ;) I want them to be ACTIVE on the next Carbon Z Timber ;)

    • @jakeharrington3781
      @jakeharrington3781 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, I meant slats. I just did an interesting experiment. I covered the front of one slat with painters tape to impede airflow through it, then I took it out to fly. At low speeds and high AoA, the plane consistently stalled hard to that side.
      I did this to see if slats on scale models actually function the way they do on full sized planes, these results suggest they do. If I had more courage, I’d take the slat off one side and try the same tests; however, the asymmetrical drag concerns me.

    I have this plane too, it really is the most relaxed one I have out of all the Horizon planes, for myself its great even on the 3s 2200, high winds not even a problem because it so predictable. I only had one thing weird setting it up to a DX8...the "D" switch was reversed so I just reversed 'it', I got the memo about the ESC overheating in its original spot but instead of moving it to the front I removed the plastic 'turbo' exhausts and never had a problem even on a 90+ degree day with a 4s. Super nice plane, Its the ONLY plane Ive had that I can hover for any length of time without really moving...and no Im not a 3d flier.

      But seriously, we did build this as a runway, and we'll eventually extend it, if all goes to plane. We have just send a HUUUUUGE check to have the power lines buried too, so no longer will we see those ugo power lines ;) And I don't have to worry about hitting them and getting killed when I PPG - also good!

    I went on the wait list for tt evo from hobbie shop here in Australia got mine Dec 2022, it's seems Horizon has listened to us once again. I knew about the esc overheating due to position and they I think have lengthened the leads from battery to esc and to the motor and moved the ecs position forward staight out the factory, I was only running 3s but it didn't get hot at all the slightest bit warm of course could nothing one wouldn't expect and the esc's position was located forward close to airflow coming the front of the craft. I believe the proplem is fixed and if you want to move it there is plenty of length in power leads to accommodate our needs now.

    I lost control of mine due to overheating with the revision implemented . I now wait a minimum of 15 minutes between flights and I cut a NACA duct in the battery cover just forward if the ESC and battery. I also move my battery as far back as possible to allow more ESC exposure. After a flight on 4s 4000 the ESC is still over 200F but it’s not as bad as before. About 10-15F less. Has anyone else had this experience? I’m in North Carolina but it wasn’t over 80F outside at the time.

    I love my TT Evo but it's so hard to land. It just floats to will it's hard to get it to come down. Plus flipping the switch and then giving reverse full throttle is counterintuitive. I crashed by trying to thrust reverse but it was actually still in normal thrust. It took off and instantly slammed into tree. Luckily no damage. Gonna have to try and figure it pilot fatigue. I don't have any extra channels though.

    • @BrianPhillipsRC
      @BrianPhillipsRC  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I assume you're landing with full landing flaps? Are you gliding in? If so, ALSO give about 5-15% throttle to make the prop spin under load...this will help slow down the plane too...I know it sounds like BS, but it's a huge surface when it's spinning, and will create a ton of drag.
      Also, pilot fatigue setup is in a bunch of radio setup videos we've done, if you want to try it out. You could steal the SAFE channel, but make sure you re-assign it to G or some other switch so you don't get confused and accidentally end up turning on REVERSE when you're looking for SAFE!!!!

    • @rccowboys
      @rccowboys 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BrianPhillipsRC yes full flaps. I will try the 5-15% throttle. I have seen your pilot fatigue setup a couple times, need to go back and watch. Problem is I don't have safe channel. I have a DX 6 and 6th channel is thrust reverse. I just need to make that the pilot fatigue I guess. Thanks for the info as always. 🙂
