Bought my China Doll at Pantry Pride as one of those tiny potted plants they sold for under a dollar likely 40 years ago. It got so tall I planted it out in my backyard and it's a very tall spindly tree. Produces long tubular white fragrant blooms. Survived our 20 degree temps this winter. Got my money's worth I'd say!!😅

Wow!! I just identified a plant, the only plant I have ever cared this much for and about in my life as a China doll and I'm so excited. I have become so attached to this beautiful plant that I bought at a grocery store for a couple dollars not even knowing what it was not having a clue that this plant will bring so much hapiness into my life. I know it sounds a bit dramatic but this plant has been through so much with me and represents perseverance and strength because all the hard times Ive been up against the last few years. Honestly, I thought it was a rose bush but its never grown anything similar to a flower ever but I love this plant so much I gifted it to my mother. I know she'll take as good of care as I would or even better. She knows how much I care for this plant, and I think she cares for it as well. Now that I know what it is, and it has such a cool name, I love it even more. Awesone video

I've had my girl for TWENTY THREE YEARS!!! No joke!!! She's split into 2 plants now, and she's over 8 ft tall. She's gotten tall and spindly, not as bushy all the way up. I keep wanting to trim her down but my husband loves her super tall. She sort of looks like a palm/china doll hybrid. I don't have the heart to cut her head off 😄

@@ThatFoliageLife Well it's been trial and error. I've gotten her too cold and too hot numerous times thru the years. She'll drop her leaves but she always recovers! She loves it outside but being in the hills of the Napa Valley now, the heat is really a lot. I have her in shade this week as its mid 90s. They like it not too hot and not too cold as you know. I've had her in high 30s up to 100+. She has gotten burned leaves before, where they crisp up around the edges and go brown. But she grows new leaves back every time! She forgives me if I don't scoot her to a better spot in time. She's a faithful green friend!

This was such a helpful video! I've been taking care of my china doll plant for a few months mostly through trial and error and I'd seen a resources telling me that it likes being pruned a fair amount but I was never really sure what they wanted me to do. You've convinced me that I should snip off those worse looking bottom branches to allow it to flourish. It's leaves have also been turning yellow and falling off a lot so I'm trying to figure out what it wants but keep getting conflicting sources

This was great! I bought my China doll plant small back in 2017, but it seems really inclined to grow if I give it the space (I’ve repotted it once and it essentially doubled in size), so I’m thinking of giving it a bigger pot so it can get more tree-sized. Thank you for your excellent tips!

I bought a china doll last summer and killed her by overwatering. 😢 I have recently purchased another two. I just love their delicate look. Very feminine.
After watching your VERY informative video and reading the comments, I'm going to figure out a way to segregate them from my other plants. I didn't have any spider mite issues with my previous china doll plant, but I'm going to keep a very close eye on these two new ones. I'll look into the prevention of spider mites, too!
I read in the comments that shortly after this video, yours got spider mites again, and you did a major chop. I'm sure that broke your heart. 💔 I was so sorry to read that. How is she doing now?

Bought a China doll a couple weeks ago. Gotta say, if I got to start putting it in the shower, the plant might struggle 😂. Jk, I use misting to add humidity and to clean leafs. Didn't think there was any way to get rid of spider mites so a heavy drenching might be a tactic I could use in the future if I have any mite problems. Do you have a household item that could be used to replace neem oil. I live in an area, the nearest neam oil might be 2 hours drive each way. And don't see a point of wasting money in it unless I needed it. Anything else good for wiping out spider mites?

I just got one this past summer, i had never seen one before but it was beautiful, i love any plant that looks like a tree, and i needed to have it lol. Now that its indoors its not doing so good 😢. The leaves keep yellowing and falling off, and idk what to do to make it happy. The person i bought it from said it likes a lot of water, so ive been trying to water it every couple of days, but the soil will still be moist and it’ll still be sad. I have it under an LED grow light, maybe it doesnt like the direct light? I may move it somewhere else, but our basement isnt very big.

    • @vickykent353

Just a suggestion from another China Doll admirer, and that would be to get a water meter.
I wish I had known about water meters when I had my first one. I killed her with love by overwatering. I now use the water meter on every plant I own before watering. There's so much variation in water requirements between plants. Some, like this plant, like moist soil all the time from what Judy said in this video. There's a big difference between moist and down right wet, which I discovered too late with my first one.
      I really hope this helps. ❤ 😊

A faint breeze of the fan is enough to make the leaves fall. Can you please help? The leaves on one of them is only towards the top when it used to be lush green. Iv had mine about 9 months, i was about 1 foot tall and 3 of them in the same pot. I haven't separated them, they look fantastic together. It s out side facing the west on the porch getting a little afternoon sun.. I cant believe how fast they have grown, its about 5 feet tall now, I did repot it into a very large pot about 1 1/2 feet diameter. I do feed it with seaweed solution about once a month, she absolutely loves this as all her leaves stand up very proud. I don't want to prune it as I think it would now become to top heavy and fall over. Probably should have pruned it at about 1 1/2 feet like yours looks like it was, giving it a much bushier look which i think is much better but having the 3 in 1 pot compensates for this very well. I'm hoping not repotting it again will stop it from reaching the roof haha... It has be the fastest plant iv ever seen grow.....
Great video thanks for making it.......

I'm having so much trouble finding somewhere without too much light inside my house. Maybe it's a southern hemisphere thing? (I guess naturally these plants must be asian rainforest or something?). Mine is only about a foot tall at the moment so it's okay on the bathroom counter, but it really wants a bigger pot and to just sprout on upwards. I'm gonna have to hang some kind of shade cloth in my little sitting room or something! I have plant choice regret. It's pretty though.

Hi Lisa! Thank you for watching! If your plant is small would suggest leaving it in the pot until its root bound. I have found that these plants grow and die off pretty quickly so don't be afraid to prune or cut off any dying leaves because with good conditions like light and warmth, it will grow back fairly quickly. There really is a lack of info out there for this plant! Ive been trial and error-ing the hell out of this plant for the past 2yrs now and still can't quite fig it out! 😂 I purchased mine in an arrangement, and it was teeny tiny, like ground cover size. It grew fast and furious once i moved it to my east facing windowsill, but i did burn it when it was small after i sprayed pesticide on it. They do not like most pesticides! But it recovered and was glossy, bushy, and just over a foot tall (multiple plants/trunks in one pot). I pruned it here n there. Then i repotted it one pot up bc it was drying out so fast, and roots were coming out of the bottom of the pot. I also moved it away fr the window since it was too large. Big mistake, it had a complete tantrum, the leaves and stems yellowed and dried up, and it lost a few trunks. Finally i realized it wasnt invisible pests (i was treating using predator mites), it was root rot fr the soil not drying out enough bc it was winter and in a bigger pot, and no longer had the sun to help dry it. It also wasnt getting enough light. I read somewhere that it needs to be no more than a foot fr the window (im sure varies) so i pruned it WAY back, repotted it a size down, and stuck it back on the windowsill. It grew so damn fast again, looked great, reached the same size it was before, and then boom 💥 struggle bus again!! Im dealing w leaf curl, limp, and some yellowing leaves/branches, tho not like before. Its still growing a lot, still bushy, but its not as happy as it cld be. Also, im not sure if it has a pest or if its excreting salts through its stems and leaves. It looks like the same stuff that appears on some of my succulents after i water. Im not a newbie when it comes to pests, but im baffled by this... anyone else notice this on theirs? The plant roots are growing out the bottom of the pot again, so maybe its a soil/mineral buildup environment thing going on? I think im going to have to sadly give it away, its just too big for the spot it needs to be in. I have another i made from propagation, but its experiencing the same things currently and theyre in dif rooms in dif lighting etc. I def have a love/hate relationship w china doll trees 😒 haha
Also, ive water propagated this through stem and leaf cuttings, and just want to say, dont bother w the leaf props... theyll root, but ive had 0 success in getting them to grow after potting. They eventually just die. Maybe it's just me tho ;)

Has anyone pay attention to the details of the flowers? It simulates 2 butterflies in the inside. My neighbor has a china doll tree and the flowers only open at night and they smell so good!

What kind of soil should I use for repotting?

Loose, chunky and well draining soil is recommended.

Thanks for sharing ! Im on my second attempt trying to keep a small China doll alive. It hasn’t grown at all..…and since the weather got cool it’s started dropping stems…. Glad to hear there’s still hope . I have it in the bathroom for winter (there’s a window in there) . I’ve struggled a lot with proper watering (on both ends. Over and under watering) do you think a water globe will help with the balancing act?

I haven't personally tried a water globe, but maybe try a self-watering pot? That might help with more consistent watering. :)

My China doll plant all the leaves has fallen off… and the stems have turned brown… the plant has literally no leaves… is there a chance to save it…. I love this plant I don’t want to lose it… I guess I was over watering it

Oh I'm sorry to hear this! I would suggest pruning it back. They always bounce back so well for me!

Interesting, I live in the AZ desert and my China doll has been growing rapidly in bone-dry soil & direct sun with no problems whatsoever. No drooping, burning, pests, etc. And I don't fertilise it either. Maybe it just likes this arid climate

What type of soil mixture would you use for your China Doll? Do you use your Chunky mixture? 💝🌹🐧

Hi Charlene! I only just recently started making up my soil, so this tree is still currently potted in the original soil it came in with a bit of the Osmocote Indoor plant soil layered on top. I will be putting it into that chunky soil mix when it's rootbound and time to repot. :)

@@ThatFoliageLife Niiiiice! Okay, I just purchased one and it has 'ugly' soil...lol! It was a Clearance baby. Barely hanging in...💝 I will leave it in its original soil and just top it off with some fresh soil and repot in a few weeks. Thanks! 🌹
