    I've had my China Doll plant for 23 years!!!! No joke!!! She is over 8 ft tall. She's survived so much. I've split her up and given her away to friends. I have 2 of her now from one tiny 4 inch plant. Both over 8 ft tall. We had to evacuate for fires twice and my now husband made sure she was in the truck with her head waving about as we drove away. We were blessed beyond measure to come home amd still Have a home. She is a special plant and I adore her!

      I love this. I've had mine 18 years and she's moved through so many apartments with me. They do get to be quite special.

    Her tips definitely work. It is proved on my one. I got a stunning China Doll. I put it a bit far from window and did not water it as often as it should be. I have now leave it close to the window and mist it when sunlight is strong. It grows so many new leaves. Thank you.

    You explained this very quickly, articulately and provided easy "Don't and remember to," steps for this dainty plant. It's my First, as I'd not heard of a china doll before. But, I can see how bourgeois she can be until her necessary "conditions" are met. Thank you so much!

    Subtropical trees. They are sprayed with growth regulators and I've seen them grown in full sun or under 63-73% shadecloth. Love nitrogen. Fast growth outside mine get huge pinch out weak stretchy winter growth if you dont want to spray them with GR then try gradually acclimate to full sun so they don't stretch.

    What a lovely way to end the video :) I am just acclimating my small China doll to the outdoors for summer. No matter the window I put her in in the house, she’s a leaner lol. So I’m situating the plant in a north east area in some early morning light. So far so good (but definitely thirsty) have a wonderful day :)

    Could you please show us how to properly prune this plant? I have a tall one but the last foot or so is bare and leggy. I understand why this si but I would like to have it grow full and bushy as well as tall. I have looked at some tips to prune but all say to clip the stems flush with the stalk. Others say to cut the leggy portion off just above a spot where it has its own leaf-bearing branches. Do I cut the branches that have leaves or the stalk? HELP!

    Could we hear more about how to rescue one (esp after a near total leaf drop), and how to know how much water's needed for a very deep pot?

    Ty for your info. This is my 2nd one with only one branch left... do tbey prefer to be in their own pot? I've planted both times w other plants. so I'm wondering if they prefer their own space lol

    I just bought one... how do I train it to have 1 or 2 main stems ? Thank You

    I just bought one today. It looks a bit spindly compared to the ones you showed here. I think it needs fertilizer. I'll wait 'till it 'settles in' here in it's new home. I put it beside a south facing window that does not get direct sunlight but diffused. I hope my doll likes it here. I want to nurture it the correct way. It's sharing a shelf with Lucky Bamboo. I know it's not really bamboo but I won't tell Doll that. I'll hope for the lucky part. Thanks for info.

      Its now 5/23/22. When i returned from a 3 day camping trip my dolly had died from thirst. I have a water person now lined up. They r hard to find. Not Reliable people.

      I'm so sorry to hear about your China Doll dying. I got one several months ago and have become quite attached to her. She is so classy and elegant.
      Regarding water for my girl, I don't know whether this is an anomaly or not, but the roots are living in water. It seems she grew overnight. She still lives in her beautiful soil but seems very appreciative of her little pool of water for her legs ... not just her toes. She's in all the way to her hips!
      I was just Googling whether China Doll's could be grown hydroponicly

    How do you make it bushy?

  • @OneUpAnnie
    @OneUpAnnie 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I have one of these, it's quite large and bushy, do you think it could be safely trimmed into more of an umbrella shape by snipping off all the lower growth? Or would it just constantly regrow and look messy?

      Absolutely, pruning is a good thing for the plant! Just be sure to use clean cutters.

    How do I Propagate this plant??

    • @EnglishGardensMichigan
      @EnglishGardensMichigan  2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      The China Doll takes a little extra care to propagate but it's doable. First know that you need to focus on picking from newer growth only, the woody parts of the plant are not the easiest to root. Pick a green stem that's under 6 inches long, dip the cut end into a powdered root hormone. Insert into a 4" container filled with potting soil. It needs a little extra humidity to send out roots so cover the cutting with a clear plastic bag and keep moist. Watering lightly but frequently, before the top of the soil turns "paper bag brown" color. Keep in a bright room but not direct sunlight while rooting. This should take 3 weeks or so.

    My china doll is green but is losing some bottom leaves. What could be causing this?

    • @EnglishGardensMichigan
      @EnglishGardensMichigan  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This is typical for the changing of the seasons. You can try reducing water if it doesn't normalize in the next few weeks.
