Sankagiri was initially known as Kunrathur as per the inscriptions available. Considering the hill is in the conch structure, the mountain is called Sankagiri, joining the Sanskrit name of 'Giri' means hill. Sankagiri, once the capital of the Kongu Region, the Sankagiri fort served as a British tax storage facility for Kongu Nadu holds the present districts of Salem, Erode, Dindigul, Coimbatore, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Namakkal Karur and Tiruppur.
Sankagiri Fort also has the distinction of being the tallest hill fort in Tamil Nadu. The Sankagiri fort has ten(10) gates from the foothills to the top.
At various times, different kings built the Sankagiri fort. Before the 15th Century, Vettuva Gounder King "Kunni Vettuva Raja" constructed 4 Entrances out of 10. And after the Vijayanagar empire expanded, the Sankagiri fort is believed to have been fortified by Tipu Sultan in the Seventeenth Century (17th). And the last phase, these walls were built by the British.
As per the archaeologist, the Sankagiri fort was constructed from Chozhas and expanded by Hoysalas, Pandyas, Vijayanagara kings, Madurai Nayaks, Mysore Udayars and Britishers. Even though Mysore Kings built the 6, 7 & 8th walls, it was believed that the hilltop temples, Mandapas and Ponds existed more than 800 to 900 years before.
After the war in 1689, the Sankagiri fort was under Mysore Wodeyars and later under the power of Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan till 1792. Later British took control and kept it as a watchtower. After 1822, the fort lost its military fame, and after that, it remained a deserted place.
Since Sankagiri Hill is only one side climbable, this Sankagiri fort was a substantial military base for Tippu Sultan and later for the British army. This Sankagiri fort has a Death well, Granary, Oil godowns, Explosives godown, Masjids, Varadharaja Perumal temples, Former British Army administrative buildings, and Cemeteries formerly used by armies.
As per archaeologists, beyond thought, cruel punishments and death sentences are carried at the top of this Sankagiri Fort. On 31 July 1805, Dheeran Chinnamalai was executed by the British at the top of the Sankagiri fort.

Between the 5th and 6th entrances, a mysterious tunnel can be inside Masjid. People believe this tunnel will take us to Mysore.
