This is really interesting. My husband 's native village is on the banks of the Thamirabarani and our family temple is literally on the river bank. While the rest of the village folk pray at the Amman temple inside the village we along with four other families and their descendants go every year to the family temple and the main deity is a nadukkal . A two day Puja is done with the nadukkal as the central deity. While Amman temples all over Thuthukudi Tirunelveli and Kanyakumari districts celebrate the annual Amman kodai festival on Tuesdays of the chithirai or aadi month our celebration is always on the 18th and 19th of chithirai. After watching this video it is obvious that some ancient ancestor had done some brave deed and was honoured with a nadukkal. I have to say I'm really proud that my husband and children carry such wonderful dna

Our ancestors were so civilized and hygienic in their socio-economic structure that they respectfully laid their dead in a separate and isolated spots of land as "Idukaadu-இடுகாடு-burial land" and "sudukaadu-சுடுகாடு-crematorium" specially allocated for burial and cremation purposes alone. Unlike other religions, Hindhus never installed burial or cremation sites in the midst of dwelling. And even more as economic is that they never built cemeteries for the dead in most deaths. They erected "Hero Worship Stones"-வீர வழிபாட்டுக் கல்" in the form of stone reliefs at the sport where the heroes met their fate. Most of these became "Clan Deities"-குல தெய்வங்கள். Only the most noble persons were offered a cemetary. The excavations not yielding human bones may also suggest that they practiced cremation in most of the occasions of death in order to reduce the bone garbage. It was a practice in those days that after every big war, that were mostly engaged in far away fields preferable river banks, people performed mass cremation on the mounds of dead warriors and horses and elephants.

It is not surprising that artifacts are found in tamil nadu dating back to the time of the exodus frim the Indus in 1900bc, maybe even older . The graffiti found in keezadi confirms the connection. There will be more with further excavations.
More than 4000 artefacts found in keeladi. Archaeologists found tools, toys, jewels, container vessels (pots), coins and even skeletons near by (கொந்தகை). But not a single Hindu Idol. It clearly shows that our (Tamil) ancestors were not Hindus.
@@geisha-12 Idol and temple worship are not mentioned in any of the vedas. These practices crept into Hinduism only after the advent of Buddhism and Jainism. Many of the buddhist and Jain temples were converted into Hindu temples. The Vedic aryans were meat eaters and not idol worshippers.

Probably came from Veda. But some other continuity in culture is seen. Yes, jain and buddhist temples in South India have been converted to Hindu temples. Hindus in other parts also practice burial long before Judaism was even born. Burials are usually reserved for Hindu monks or sadhus and children who haven't got their upanayan ceremony and whoever wants to be buried that way, rest go for cremation( maximum Hindus opt for cremation now). In fact, my mom's grandmom's sister had her ashes buried in a urn and a Allaya( its an Odia word for small cemented/thatched roof shaped graves of enlightened spirits who served humanity) erected to commemorate her, offerings were buried with her and my maternal house still gives her offerings as she led a pious life as a Hindu preacher of Bhagavatam and we are Odias, the only Indian group with no Muslim or Christian influence still existent to this day, pure Vaishnavaite Sanatani culture of the Odias. Hindus also practice embalming, usually a sage's body is done so and worshipped or his ashes are collected in a urn and buried in a mound, worshipped like that for centuries, most of the Vaishnavaite ans Shaivite saints in Odisha are worshipped that way only. You don't get samadhis like that, Jains and Buddhists also do the same otherwise we won't get the crystallized remains of Buddha in various stupas too. These ancient Tamil practices are pretty consistent with rest of India as well as Indus valley civilization, although Veerakaals are only found in South India, we just have village deities of women/Men who fought with Mughal-Turkic-British rule, like Vasulei, Jagulei. There are immortalized in the history of Odisha as warriors who protected our culture from foreign invasions. Remember, Odisha was the last state in Northern India to come under Muslim rule, that too lasted for 2 decades and we had periods of independence and then, being a vassal kingdom. We are also the last state in India to enter the British empire in 1803, we might have been independent if Nepalese and Punjabis hadn't conspired against us.

It is not surprising that artifacts are found in tamil nadu dating back to the time of the exodus frim the Indus in 1900bc, maybe even older . The graffiti found in keezadi confirms the connection. There will be more with further excavations.

Idol and temple worship are not mentioned in any of the vedas. These practices crept into Hinduism only after the advent of Buddhism and Jainism. Many of the buddhist and Jain temples were converted into Hindu temples.
The Vedic aryans were meat eaters and not idol worshippers.
@@aws8536 Not sure where you got the idea about idol worship coming from Jainism and Buddhism. We don't have much idea of the early Vedic people. If they were from India or migrated. Indus Valley civilization is not seen as Vedic people. Infact it is not even a kingdom. So we don't know when people started worshiping and making idols and having Kings and caste system. Probably came from Veda. But some other continuity in culture is seen. Yes, jain and buddhist temples in South India have been converted to Hindu temples. But that is not during ancient times, but rather in recent history ( After Pandya period ).

Burials are usually reserved for Hindu monks or sadhus and children who haven't got their upanayan ceremony and whoever wants to be buried that way, rest go for cremation( maximum Hindus opt for cremation now). In fact, my mom's grandmom's sister had her ashes buried in a urn and a Allaya( its an Odia word for small cemented/thatched roof shaped graves of enlightened spirits who served humanity) erected to commemorate her, offerings were buried with her and my maternal house still gives her offerings as she led a pious life as a Hindu preacher of Bhagavatam and we are Odias, the only Indian group with no Muslim or Christian influence still existent to this day, pure Vaishnavaite Sanatani culture of the Odias.
Hindus also practice embalming, usually a sage's body is done so and worshipped or his ashes are collected in a urn and buried in a mound, worshipped like that for centuries, most of the Vaishnavaite ans Shaivite saints in Odisha are worshipped that way only. You don't get samadhis like that, Jains and Buddhists also do the same otherwise we won't get the crystallized remains of Buddha in various stupas too. These ancient Tamil practices are pretty consistent with rest of India as well as Indus valley civilization, although Veerakaals are only found in South India, we just have village deities of women/Men who fought with Mughal-Turkic-British rule, like Vasulei, Jagulei. There are immortalized in the history of Odisha as warriors who protected our culture from foreign invasions. Remember, Odisha was the last state in Northern India to come under Muslim rule, that too lasted for 2 decades and we had periods of independence and then, being a vassal kingdom. There is an argument that disturbing these gravesites may not be in the best of tastes. After all, if you go by the belief, the dead probably do not like to be disturbed! That said, the burial of the dead brings us to a very modern problem; that of land usage.
There will eventually be more dead than the living, and the endless growth of cemeteries will start to eat up on areas for the living.
In our time, this is why many of those societies where the tradition has been to consign bodies to cemeteries are increasingly opting for cremations, since they - the dying - consider this to be the more responsible thing to do.
