89 Chevy Truck - fixing the broken odometer

  • In this video I find the problem with the odometer on my 1989 Chevrolet K1500. It turned out to be a relatively simple fix. Over the years, the plastic gear became brittle and cracked.
    I later ordered a new gear.
    Dorman part number: 924-396
    You can get them on eBay. But search around. You may be able to find them a few bucks cheaper. I just ordered what was quickest.

    i have a 1990. the odometer reads 109,000. it has approx 750,000 miles on the truck. the rear diff is the only original drive train component left. the odometer has been faulty since it was new. the odometer, door handles/panels and the fuel pumps are the only "bad parts" gm put in these trucks.

    Great video! I have a 1988 Chevy C1500, and I used this video to fix my odometer. If you're super cheap or too busy to visit a junkyard(like me) you might be able to fix your broken gear. I put some epoxy in the crack on my gear, and on the odometer shaft. Slide it on and use a small hose clamp to apply even pressure so as not to break the teeth or crack the gear further. The odometer takes minimal force to rotate, so the epoxy is plenty strong enough. Now I can finally figure out my gas mileage!

    I hate the gauge cluster in the 88-93. It’s actually fairly easy to swap them with a 94-96 needle gauge cluster. Also I picked up some decent bucket seats and had them reupholstered. After picking up a 4L80e I’m on the hunt for a low mileage LS.

    • @MaqsVids
      @MaqsVids  ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree with you on the cluster. I might be doing the same thing with my seats if I find some decent ones at a junkyard. But I'm torn on going away from the bench seat. We'll see what I can find.

    I’m a big fan of the half moon white face that comes up behind the “needle.” Something I wish they would have kept, but I understand that the performance of the modern motors demanded a more responsive gauge.

      I just picked up a 89 k1500. the only thing that works reliable on the cluster is the speedometer and temp. the fuel gage stays at full all the time and when it’s starting to get low it just goes bananas and it drives me crazy

      So ended up being the fuel sending unit wires were messed up and the oil pressure sending unit was bad, and the coolant temp connector had a bad connection. if you unplug the harness for the fuel sending unit the gauge should go up all the way. means gauge in cluster is good but sending unit is bad. coolant temp sensors on drivers side toward the front side of the block. oil pressure sending unit is big metal thing by the oil filter

    • @benjaminlockhart2792

    Maybe you can help me out. I have a 1990 Chevy 1500, and I have had it for about 6 months now . Shortly after getting it, I noticed my odometer seems to work sometimes, either for the the whole duration of my ride or partial. I went ahead and replaced the speed sensor and have the same issue, it still works some of the time. When it does work, it doesn't seem like any gears in the odometer clusters are broken, it cycles through just fine. Any idea what this might be happening? Thanks

    • @MaqsVids
      @MaqsVids  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I had a cluster do that exact thing with a cracked gear. It would slip on the shaft sometimes and sometimes it wouldn't. I can't be 100% certain. The gear won't be the first thing I would check. I pulled several junk yard clusters and they ALL had cracked gears. Also, sometimes even with a cracked gear, it will work for a while.

      Darn it. If you are sure the gear isn't cracked, that is just unlucky. If you can get your hands on a known good cluster and swap it in, that would be a good place to start. That would help you to know if the problem is even in the cluster. Good luck!

      I’ve let it go this long 😂 , I’m wondering if the motor that turns the gear is bad. I have grounding issues that cause my reverse lights not to work and my right brake light, my oil pressure guage swings back and forth from 0-60 the whole time I’m driving and every time the cluster shows the “check gauges” light.

      I am not sure. I would have to dig into that one. I know they are getting harder to find. But, I would get another cluster, open it up, and see if there was an obvious part that would allow one to work and not the other. Heck, I may do that if I have time. 😉 Good luck
