I used to love all kinds of racing games but I just cant find any urge to play them anymore since many years back. Strange how it can change . Same with sports games. Never play them anymore but used to love them.
One thing I'm surprised you didn't discuss in the video: what's with the strange hitching every 1,5 seconds? Is that the fault of the freesync? It looks pretty bad, almost as if the game tics were not timed with monitor refresh rates.
On a Samsung QLED TV you'll have Freesync down to 48fps. As long as they can keep above that number then Freesync users will keep a fluid gameplay experience. Apparently they didn't keep above 48fps all the time, and I'm not saying the severe FPS drops are excusable, but still you do have ways to mitigate this kind of thing on Xbox X.
@DigitalFoundry, please take a look at the Switch version of Grid, the result is very very impressive! Graphics, controls, sounds... What a job from the devs!!
DF messed it up completely. In the retail verision the missing grass has been fixed, as well as some other issues. Now both versions looks exactly the same, except for higher resolution on Xbox One X. Making such comparisons on pre-release versions of the game is just a waste of time...

I have very high hopes for this game as the first Grid is one of my favorite racers of all time. The sequels got away from that first game's handling, focus, and sense of fun. I really hope this game is a return to form.
grant4evergamer They’re mentioning PC because the game is very optimized , hence why it can hit 60. GRID is a different game made by different developers
Maybe there's a similar situation here where the X inherits the graphics quality settings of the base Xbox One and the Pro of the base PS4. Quite lazy of the devs if that's the case
Yep, noticabley worse anisotropic filtering and foliage but then to top it all off no adaptive resolution either to stabilize the frame rate. That exta power counts for nothing when the devs don't put the effort in, the X version should look and perform the best without question.
A 1440p mode on the Xbox One X makes sense, since 1440p monitors are supported via Xbox ironically unlike on the Pro. The game looks like fun and physical damage is accepted with open arms.
Grid 1 is my fav Racing game. Shame no other game comes close to it, even Grid 2 or the other racers. I hope this one does, but it doesnt seem to. I loved how easy it was to crash, how much dirt came out of the cars when they went out of the track, how cars got dirty or broken. It wasss soooo cool to see a crash, something i just got to see in Wreckfest. Still, Grid 1 wins even over that for me cuz its more realistic as well.
I've said this in every comment about Grid 1 that it was perfect because it was just as much fun in that game to race the perfect line as it was to total the car. I think they knew it too, because they had no-touch duels as well as a demolition derby, and both felt good. That's when you have that sim-arcade balance just right. I hope this game returns to that.
Richard please this is a completely different question but please can you tell me what framerate ps2 and xbox fatal frame games run at? I can't find it anywhere online and i am really frustrated....
Actually i have both consoles and i don't care about the graphics, but could someone tell us if there will be a split screen local co op gameplay option in the game please? Or like most of the racing games, online multiplayer only. Thank you.
Where are the cool physics that actually made grid special ? What happened with your car being totaled or you wheels popping out when you crashed into a wall to hard ? I feel like hundreds of games have been made just like this one already, all casual and aimed at kids
Every single grid sequel up 'til now has been shit, and I'm not sure this one will get the series back on track. Grid had the best racing AI ever. Those epic crashes that could happen in front of you, HMMMMM gimme gimme!
I never played Grid, so I just watched a crash compilation for the game. But it did not looked very impressive to me. I'm currently playing Wreckfest, which has the best real time destruction and deformation I have ever seen in a racing game.
@@feyt8009 Yeah, I just checked again and I really might have watched the wrong video. The video I watched was for Grid Autosport. Not Racedriver Grid. Sorry. Watched the right game and crash compilation now. It's not bad, but i think even Burnout Paradise had better crashes and damage models. But does Grid have real licensed cars? If so, then I'm more impressed, because as we know, the car manufacturers usually don't like to see their cars getting destroyed in games.
They mentioned something. How the pro can force render at 1080p on alot if games. X should allow this. But since it also supports 1440p, it should also force render at that resolution. It would be a good idea.
I"ll take a dip in frame rate on the rare occasion to not have dynamic resolution since in nearly all cases dynamic resolution is overly done and locks you into lower frame rates when it's not really needing to do so. Gears 5 is a perfect example of this.
I feel like the difference in graphics between Pro and X is actually because the X is more powerful (not in the obvious way). It seems to happen a lot in games actually. Because the devs can push the fps and resolution higher on X there has to be a compromise so I'm assuming that's why there is less foliage and stuff like that. As with the Pro since it sometimes runs at a lower fps and resolution they can push the environmental graphics a bit harder.
@jvalex18 U mean 4K is only hard for Multi-Platform games. Sony push PS4 pro past it's limits with 4K checkerboard games. And Microsoft would've had more 4K games if they had more games this gen.
No it's because lazy ass game developers don't want to take the time and effort to do the work right Microsoft and Sony better crack the whip on their asses when the next systems come out
@Mike UK 1970 welp. at least the switch gets that much. but can it really not run the new grid? i feel like codematers is doing the whole "testing waters" thing on switch.
@Mike UK 1970 what they should have done, was just made the GRID reboot for switch right off the bat i wouldn't be surprised at all that a 5 year old game won't sell well
Can we get a tech analysis of Grid on Switch. I bought it a few days ago and it rocked my face off. I'm torn too because it runs at 60FPS in performance mode but graphics mode looks really good at a smooth 30fps. So good that I initially thought the footage of it was fake (ala Xenon on Switch). It's sad it took this long to get a serious racing game on Switch but man, did Codemasters really come through...for the most part (no multiplayer at launch sucks ass no matter how you cut it).
That notebook CPU comes back to haunt the 8th generation of consoles. It's obvious this is an early build though so who knows, the problems may be fixed.
You'd not say that if you have a good 4k display... The shimmer that you get when the TV or console upscales is just so distracting, especially when you have mostly hard edge geometry, unless you filter the hell out of it but then you might as well run at 1080 if you do that.
I don't see why people make a big deal if a game drops from 60fps to 52fps, it's silly. That's like someone complaining their game dropping from 90fps to 80fps.... it's still high enough to be good.
Cmon guys, grid autosport on switch is way more interesting than an early build of this game. There's way more to talk about with that while this is just an easy to video to make I'm sad you guys made zero mention of grid autosport on switch despite the several opportunities you had. So did you get the footage mixed up or did you mean the PS has folage? because in the video it seems like the Xbox version has no grass.
looks and run smooth so far, the final changes might be very subtle at the end
Shadows appearing right in front of your face is not a thing for such kind of game in 2019. The game looks nice other than that.
@@OneStepToDeath420 Bruh, destruction is the main focus of wreckfest, besides it's much more recent. Did you really see videos of Racedriver Grid?
@@feyt8009 Yeah, I just checked again and I really might have watched the wrong video. The video I watched was for Grid Autosport. Not Racedriver Grid. Sorry. Watched the right game and crash compilation now. It's not bad, but i think even Burnout Paradise had better crashes and damage models. But does Grid have real licensed cars? If so, then I'm more impressed, because as we know, the car manufacturers usually don't like to see their cars getting destroyed in games.
@@OneStepToDeath420 Yeah it has real licensed cars, even prestigious cars like the Bugatti Veyron and Ferarris can be smashed to pieces.
For everyone up in arms about the grass how many of you are paying attention to it when you're flying around the dam track
What's up with so many games in 2019 not using the full power of Xbox One X to hit 4K
Uh maybe because it drops frames and makes the racing experience very unstable.....
@jvalex18 U mean 4K is only hard for Multi-Platform games. Sony push PS4 pro past it's limits with 4K checkerboard games. And Microsoft would've had more 4K games if they had more games this gen.
No it's because lazy ass game developers don't want to take the time and effort to do the work right Microsoft and Sony better crack the whip on their asses when the next systems come out
Arcadey? Because Grid 2 worked out so well.
You got the grass bit backwards chief.
Wait...but in the footage it *does* have grass.
I am a bit confused now.
Looks like he meant to say Xbox has no grass, but said PS4 by mistake.
@@strangevision99 Ah yeah! Probably! ^_^
Everyone: getting ready to buy grid for current gen consoles
Me: still playing grid for ds :(
@Mike UK 1970 that's not the same grid.
Dex the gamer 😂
@Mike UK 1970 welp. at least the switch gets that much. but can it really not run the new grid? i feel like codematers is doing the whole "testing waters" thing on switch.
@Mike UK 1970 what they should have done, was just made the GRID reboot for switch right off the bat
i wouldn't be surprised at all that a 5 year old game won't sell well
Can we get a tech analysis of Grid on Switch.
Isnt this coming to the switch
1440p is fine. The improved detail and filtering make PS4 Pro look way better.
You'd not say that if you have a good 4k display... The shimmer that you get when the TV or console upscales is just so distracting, especially when you have mostly hard edge geometry, unless you filter the hell out of it but then you might as well run at 1080 if you do that.
AM Watching this on my CRT monitor. Looks amazing.!!
I'd love to see a review of Grid Autosport on the Switch to see how a high-end Ego engine game works on that console.
at 5:12 ps4 and xbox Footage is swapped ! Edit; he apparently misspoke but same idea they done goofed up.
Yeah jist noticed it,they must check that out
Nope, footage is correct but he misspoke.
Will you guys do a similar video for COD : MW Beta on consoles and PC please ?
Guys you can stop asking about the grass i think he saw it after the first 200 comments.
King thrash got these dude finally putting some effort into their videos now
Storm-Shadow123 and they still mixed up the grass😂😂
Tom mentions lack of grass on PRO and yet the video was showing the opposite. Wrong PRO/XBX labelling on screen?
I don't see why people make a big deal if a game drops from 60fps to 52fps, it's silly.
That's like someone complaining their game dropping from 90fps to 80fps.... it's still high enough to be good.
Uh oh digital foundry you have to comment on “Grassgate”. Did you mix them up, or did you lie? 😂
Cmon guys, grid autosport on switch is way more interesting than an early build of this game. There's way more to talk about with that while this is just an easy to video to make
I'm sad you guys made zero mention of grid autosport on switch despite the several opportunities you had. It's like you're avoiding it.
is it just me or was the ps4 pro the one with grass? they said ps4 pro didnt have grass but in those side by side comparisons the one x was the one seemingly missing the grass. maybe someone can help me out here lol
The coming PC release will of course be the superior version of them all.
No one cares.
Using a 980 ti pretty old card. YOU just need something decent to game on doesn't have to be new/latest thing. Also some form of knowledge helps.
Can you test different PC to Android port now that the ROG Phone 2 hits the market? For example Quake 2 on the Quadtouch app? Also compare the Deltatouch Doom port and Bethesdas own Doom release?
5:06 - which console has grass? I see it on PS4, and NOT on X, unless labels are mixed up
I'd like to see a grid autosport switch port in depth video! Its a very interesting port.
You have the videos on screen comparison completely the wrong way round!! Geez DF
You should check out Grid Autosport! It is an awesome Switch port that even has some graphics options and optional high res textures
Is it normal that all circuits showed are circuits from old grid games?
Just innocent quest... Does Xbox One X delivers higher resolution than PS4 Pro or there is something else like lighting, shadowns and framerate?
Can you do a comparison between the Switch version of GRID™ and the iPhone XS/11 version ?
