    I was surprised by alix defending the defending the PS5 dips vs the PS4 versions in the rainy areas. He says that they're really low res effects on PS4 and that keeps the fps up over PS5 basically. That's kind of a poor excuse because PS5 is significantly more powerful than those PS4 systems, so really it should be able to handle it, and if it isn't maybe they're pushing it too far.

      It's not really as sognificant as you think, the SSD, CPU and RAM are doing the work. The PS4 pro is equivalent to maybe a rx 580/1060 vs the ps5 which is 2070 super quality. A decent jump by all means but it's not insane like it was from ps2-ps3 or ps3-ps4.

    • @sermerlin1
      @sermerlin1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +61

      Nothing surprising really. It looks close to PS5 because they had to make it work on PS4, meaning PS5 couldn't have been pushed over the limit as it would break PS4. When talking about technology, there's a concept called "the killer app". Basically, it's that piece of software that makes buying hardware worthwhile. Even 2 years after its release, the PS5 still doesn't have that killer app. It has games and it has exclusives, but they are still being developed for the PS4. The PS5 has such a small install base, developers aren't making games that utilize the PS5's hardware. Instead, they are developing for the PS4 and porting to the PS5.

    I wonder if the PS4 will end up being Sony's new PS2, it's amazing how long the PS2 lasted and even when a good part of the world had already jumped to the new generation it still received games like Sonic Unleashed, Star Wars Force Unleashed, Need for Speed Undercover and Tomb Raider Underworld because it was still a cheaper option for those who wanted a console but couldn't buy a new generation console, especially here in Brazil where many still had the PS2 as their main console until 2014.

      @@griffgames9538 ,
      Hardware acceleration on last-gen is NOT the only thing missing. What's missing is that none of the games are written to take advantage of the SSD. The data gets moved from the SSD/HDD into the shared memory (or system + VRAM on PC).... because OTHER tasks that involve the CPU/GPU are also going on during initial game setup the speed of the SSD doesn't matter much... you could put in a normal 550MBps sequential and get very similar load times to a drive that's HALF the speed.
      The entire game ENGINE needs to be written to request assets ON-THE-FLY before drive speed matters much. Or the console's OS moving lumps of pre-prepared data (like game state saves). Or whatever... but speeding up the I/O on last-gen does very little if the game can't utlize it... same as on PC when a 3.5GBps SSD barely loads a game faster than a 0.5GBps SSD.
      So to be CLEAR:
      You need BOTH the hardware I/O to be present AND the game to be able to utilize it.

      What defines next gen though? On pc next gen is most often a difference in settings, not limited or defined by game content. Current gen consoles are mostly "next gen" because of their abilitiy to render graphics at higher res along with more/higher graphics settings and features. On my pc, I can play forza horizon 5 @720p low settings and there we go, I'm 2 console generations back. Still the 'same' game, by design. I can also change a few settings and make the game equal or beyond current gen console capabilities(limited by my specific hardware obviously.)
      My point being, what defines "next gen" is no longer defined by game design or content.

      @MrTheSmokinman 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@jmac79ers Pretty graphics isn't what makes something "Next Gen". You can turn GTAV on PC to max settings and it still feels like a PS3 game. Next Gen also has to do with the games mechanics. The Matrix Awakens on the PS5 is the best example of new mechanics. The vehicle damage, the way the vehicles deform and rolls while you're shooting out the back window looks like a movie but it's all random and natural, happening in real time. Even the glass pieces that slide and round and bounce randomly as the car is swirving. These are things you can't just go into the settings and turn on. It has to be built into the games engine. That's what makes something Next Gen. A RTX 3090 isn't going to make Fallout 76 feel Next Gen, idc how many mods you throw at it. But it might look a little nicer.

    Other than the loading times, this video convinced me I don’t need to spend $400+ on a unicorn to enjoy GT7 as it looks great on the PS4 Pro (which I already own for years). The graphical differences are actually very minor and you’d only notice them with both shown side by side. It’s not a “next gen” leap. It’s more of a slight polishing. More like PS4 Pro+. Which is in general what I’ve noticed with the new consoles. When it comes to improving graphics, it’s been a flattening curve. In other words, the improvements from PS1 to PS2 where much greater than 2 to 3, which were greater than 3 to 4, etc. Same goes for Xbox. Generational improvements are getting smaller each generation as we approach photorealism, which constantly seems on the horizon and unreachable.

    A massive success for all platforms really. If you're stuck on a base/PS4 Pro like me it's nice to know that aside from the load times, you're still getting the full GT7 experience. This is not a situation like the PS3 days where they pushed too hard and the games ran poorly as a result. That said, I feel a big part of what makes this game hold up regardless of console is PD's lighting technology. They nailed that as early as GT5, and IMO they've been leading that category ever since.

    I'm getting sick and tired of John Linneman grinding his axe to play down the PS4 Pro in order to justify PS5 exclusivity to "make full use of the PS5." Stop saying the game looks "quite good" on both systems. It's a loaded statement and we are onto you. The game looks very impressive on both systems with the PS5 benefitting from the extra grunt. If you think GT Sport was developed with a short sighted PS4 in mind, you are extremely naive. PS5 was in the picture as a port of the tech was crafted for PS4. Prototypes were in 8K. Yes further developments on the PS5 side have taken place since, what did you expect. You don't need native PS5 exclusivity to take full advantage of the PS5. Yes you can make games that utilise exclusive features, but not all games need that. PC has been grinding brute force for years without any focussed optimisations on efficiency.
    Most Playstation gamers are stuck on PS4 or PS4 Pro. Only 10% are on PS5. John Linneman wants to deny all those players from playing the game so he can enjoy some 'maybe' special feature the PS5 might use. He did the same trick with the Horizon Forbidden West comparison which sold far more copies to PS4/PS4 Pro gamers than PS5 gamers. Sony needed those sales to pay for the development of the game. There are not enough PS5 gamers out there to fund it. The plan was to have a bigger PS5 usebase by now, but Covid trashed that plan. John is fighting a loosing battle. He's deluded and acting selfishly. Think about the gamers who use the hardware you're comparing. I use to respect John until he stabbed me in the back.

    t 1st, youc an easy be mistaken, very similar, but those clips where you switch between to see the difference in the environments, really shows how much of a difference you get, the extra shadows, trees, better textures etc, just makes it look so more 'realistic' to life, rather than a 'realistic looking game'. Those sections with no trees and bare cliff sides on Ps4 make it look rouch, they spoil the rest of the environmental details.
