And yet on this video (screw youtube compression), the xb1 and 4Pro look identical for almost all intents and purposes. Even between it and the stock ps4 the only difference is a slightly lower resolution. Codemasters should take a leaf out of Turn 10's book and what they did with Forza Horizon 3. 1080/60 all the time with visuals that look better all the time too.
Forza Horizon 3 is an open world racing game - the game engine requirements are completely different. The game has to be able to deal with cars and their physics coming in head-on and from multiple directions - what has to be rendered and supported is just completely different. Simply put, you cannot compare such a racing game, to a track racer. Forza Motorsport 6 is a better comparison, so to Driveclub.
It's ok, no worries. That said Forza Motorsport 6 is 1080p, 60fps. If you google the details you'll see. I own a PS4 Pro, an Xbox One, PC and loads of other stuff. There are great racers on all platforms imo. I think Forza Horizon and Motorsport are great on Xbox, I thought Driveclub was better than people originally gave it credit for and love the Bikes add on. I've got Dirt 4 on the PS4 Pro. I must admit I had hoped for a high res mode - at least 1440p, but maybe Codemasters will pull their finger out and support something that way via an update. The best way to play as of now looks like the PC - horses for courses and all that - good game though.

I’ve always enjoyed the dirt series but I don’t have the best eyesight so it’s a bummer that they removed the mini map and racing line options from dirt 4/5. Hate when developers remove features. There should always be options for everyone
Hey, what's wrong here with road's texture? They jitter so destructive for me! What's wrong with shadows on PS4/PS4_Pro? From video they look almost black!
What? Do you know computers work with televisions? Controllers & wheels connect without a problem. Why do you think PC is the main platform for Simulator racing like iRacing? Because it's better.
Digital Foundry, whenever you take PC into the equation, PLEASE name the specs of the machine! That should be standard practice. It's disingenuous to state that PC is the superior version, when it's entirely dependent on what components you're using.
I think their engine isn't ready to support checkerboard rendering yet. 2160cb or 1800cb would have been better... Heck even 1440p would have been a noticeable upgrade. But I assume the available GPU/bandwidth resource on Pro isn't enough to hit those kind of resolution while targeting 60fps in this title.
Wipeout Omega Collection runs in 4K @ 60 fps, so yeah there could be done more with the Pro. When the Scorpio is out, devs are taking more advantage of the Pro.
+loannis Stf - BF1 uses checkerboard rendering and it's actually 1800p (or 1800cb) on Pro. But since dynamic resolution is in play In that game, it mostly sticks to *1656p*, actually. If codemasters had also used cb rendering, they could have gotten more out of PS4 Pro is all i'm saying.. But alas, not everyone has the time and budget to tick all the boxes, I presume.
Yeah, the EGO engine is really starting to show its age. It seems they've had to scale back visual quality to support their randomly generated stages, so Dirt Rally ends up looking better if you compare similar stages/weather conditions. I highly respect them for targeting 60fps though.
Hi, you are one of my favourite channels and I would like to ask you a question.I have collected some money and I want to buy a ps4 pro together with a 4k tv.I'm going to buy the second one either way. However I don't think I will purchase the ps4 pro because I've heard that the ps5 is coming next year and I'm afraid it will be a waste of money. What do you believe I should do,buy a ps4 pro or wait until the ps5 is released.Thank you for your time.
I really don't like how the trees look in a distance other than the ones you pass by. They look completely flat and there is a lack of shadows as well.
Would of liked to of seen a more in depth analysis on the pc platform. It would be nice if developers still made pc game demos so we can actually see how a game performs on our platform before we decide to buy it !!
Sooner or later you will need a PS4 pro just for native 1080p gaming... you can forget 4k. That scaled back RX 470 in the pro is weak and it doesnt help that the CPU is a crap laptop part.
Minmataro718 The Xbox One X has the same garbage cpu. RX 470 is for like 1080p 60fps ultra which it looks like PS4 Pro is doing high at 1080p 60fps. This is why the X won't get many 4K games, the cpu in all the consoles are garbage. A Intel or Ryzen cpu in PS5 would be insanity. But, I would take better games with 1080p 60fps than no games with 4K 30fps.
Almost feel like you're toning down the encode quality on purpose for the YT videos, they've become steadily worse in quality over the last month or so..
Scorpio True 4k - Pro is not dogshit, it's the developers that are too lazy to properly optimize the game for it are. But as another fellow commentator said, it should massively improve as Scorpio is coming out.
You can't really expect true 4k support for PS4 Pro. Even the Geforce 1080 (not Ti) on the PC can't do 4k @60 FPS in most games and that GPU is much more powerful than the PS4 pro, which hovers around a Geforce 1060 (or slightly above) in performance. Maybe 2560X1440 upscaled, but even that may be a stretch for some of the more demanding games (which would require something in the realms of a Geforce 1070 to get to 60 FPS). That is, if you play at the same detail settings as on the PC, which maybe won't be the case.
Magnus Lööv The PS4 pro is actually not even close to a 1060 in gaming performance. The 1060 is almost equal to an RX 480 and even the RX 470 performs better in games than the PS4 Pros GPU.
@Simon Well, it may be hard to get a real benchmark number. But one rough estimate of the power of the cards is the number of Teraflops they can do and the PS4 Pro is at 4.1 Teraflops and the 1060 is at 4.0 Teraflops. A 1080 is at 9 Teraflops (More than double the 1060 performance). But my main point was about the Ps4 Pro not being near to perform good at real 4k since it is, at best, around the same performance as the 1060 that is less than half as powerful as the 1080 which in turn itself isn't able to run 4k@60 FPS! The 1060 runs about the same benchmark numbers as the older 980 and, if I remember correctly, I think the PS4 actually was said to be about the performance level of a 980 when it was released. And I think it was talked about that it wouldn't be able to run 4K good since the 980 couldn't either! The RX-480 is more powerful than the 1060. It actually uses the same Polaris GPU as the Ps4 Pro but it is clocked a bit higher. Edit : Found this link : wccftech.com/ps4-pro-performance-equivalent-900pc/ So they estimate it is about as powerful as a 970, which is a bit less than the 1060, but not by much! In older days (Ps3, Xbox 360) it used to be that they performed better than what the "numbers" predicted, but nowadays it seems like the PC has the upper hand in every way! Still running a console that has something in the ballpark of a 970 isn't that shabby, considering that in 2013 they were still running with PS3/Xbox 360 when 600 or 700-series Geforce cards were out!
Dirt Rally was a little better on One, it's very bizarre this Dirt 4 with dynamics resolution can be a little better on PS4 ... for the rest it's the same game, difference are invisible for naked eyes. For those who say D4 is not simulation like DR, play the same car (like Alpine, R5 Turbo, BMW E30 EVO etc) on DR and after on D4 and you will see this car are more difficult to control, the game in simulation mode without help can be more difficult to master, all depend the car and the type of ground you play. D4 for me is a really great game to play.
Good video. Love this chanel. Was waiting on this video I might pick it up. This channel gonna pop when scorpio comes out. I cant wait. Keep up the good work guys
Gamer Cat MSAA is one of the oldest form of AA, and it is very clean, but it eats performance and VRAM similar to a higher resolution. Any of the more advanced post process AA can look just as good for a fraction of the performance cost, SMAA or TAA for example. But I would say it's better to have no AA at all on the pro, if it meant they could go for a higher resolution. Jagged edges are much less noticeable on higher resolutions as well.
Chiriac Puiu they can get much higher than 1200p. MSAA upscales geometry and downsamples unlike SSAA which oversamples the whole image and then downsamples. If they had 4x SSAA they could get 4K no problem, 4x MSAA is not as demanding, but still about half or something like that, so they would easily be able to get 1440p or maybe higher. Have the option to use MSAA for 1080p owners, but it's stupid priority not to have a higher resolution when it is clearly possible.
Chiriac Puiu okay so des being lazy is just because of their engine as always. They have a well optimized engine hitting 60, they should be better bale to use the extra power. If we get some test on PC showing how well resolutions scale then we can judge.
You guys really need to upload your videos in 4k or change your compression method because these compression artifacts make it impossible to see the differences when it's in motion, it looks like crap.
pc is superior, what a surprise... seriously though, stop it with these pathetic console wars, why should you care what system other people play on? we are all gamers at the end of the day, and should get on with each other
i imagine the Scorpio version will look very good, it does have alot of grunt, but i dont think it will be quite as good as the pc version, also depends on what they focus on, do they want higher resolution or higher visual settings
I'm a Dirt fan,... but they could've done a better job with the graphics. Dirt 1,2,3 was done very well for it's time. After seeing Forza Horizon 3, I was kinda disappointed with Dirt 4.
I read a lot of comments I own both PS4 Xbox one not pro or s and a pc with 16gbdd3 i74790 970gtx from gigabyte with 4 gB. Ddr5. And the three are hooked at a Samsung tv 1080 p 3D the 40'' one. I only care for graphics and fps. .plese help me where to buy it !!! And a gigabyte gtx 970 with 4 gb ddr5 with what nvidia card from 1xxx series is equivalent?
When you guys zoom things, could you just use pixel resize instead of bicubic resampling? It's just a horrible mess to look at. Pixel resize scaling would be sharp and show the resolution difference better.
It's not just that you nearly don't see any difference between PS4 & PS4 Pro. PS4 Pro is just no 4K console. And don't argue with these handful of games that run on scaled 4K!
great game, nice 1080 performance for pro, but it needs a 1440 option with effects in medium-high and solid 60 fps, and finally the VR support for PSVR and PC.
i rather the easiness and higher player count of console games but i go to PC for exclusives and games that have mod support and better frame rate ect..! nice video!
WH250398 the cpu isn't the issue in this game, it already running at 60fps, the gpu you is the issue, the gpu is powerful in the Scorpio, but not powerful enough to run this game at 4k 60fps, a gtx 1080ti gets about 70fps at 4k, and that has like twice the power of the gpu in the Scorpio, the best it could do is 1440p 60fps
PS4 Pro Best platform to play DIRT 4 on a Full HD TV ... (because a goos PC will cost soooo much to do same...) They finally understand that not all players have 4k TV yet !!! and that's great ... Thanks you Codemasters ... my PS4 Pro thanks you :)
its fucked up how once sony released the ps4 pro they started to put less work into the base ps4 because come on lets face it. if we were still in the base ps4 era without the ps4 pro existing they'd do their best to perfect it more on the base ps4
I've only seen videos of this game but the gfx are definitely not good enough. I thought with there only being one car on screen the gfx would be amazing? I think code masters need to let the drive club team they acquired help them.
I remember this series of games being more impressive. Not particularly impressed with how this one looks, to be honest. I'm sure it's technically more advanced, but maybe there is something less impressive about the general art direction.
Surprised by the frame rates, looks nice enough but its not cutting edge, i play at 2k 75hz on a 980ti fx8350 build with everything maxed and it doesnt skip a beat.
Pro user getting the shaft , unless it a Sony studio pro support is pretty bad either poorly implemented or not at all. Hopefully Ms new system gets better support.
Digital Foundry have some crazy standards. 55-60FPS almost is unplayable in their eyes while I simply cannot feel the difference. Maybe it has 5-10% impact on your controls which is almost unimportant, yet they stress it like it's everything. It's nice to have high standards on framerate, but it's just unnecessary to have super high CRAZY standard, specially on 4 years old consoles ;)
I wouldn't say we were scammed. There are games with better Pro support than others which is nice and can make a tangible improvement, but boost mode is where the console shines and is worth the price in my opinion.
I still can't believe how bad Dirt Rally and Dirt 4 look compared to Dirt 3, I think the biggest thing is lighting but really disappointing considering Dirt 3 came out in 2011.
it's funny cause with a gtx 1080ti you can get 4k 60+ fps on almost any game. maybe even 80 fps. I think next year is going to be awesome for pc as we prob play 4k 100fps. of course if you have the money.
Me personally PC really is in a league of it's own and can't really compare to consoles, it feels like an unfair advantage cause PC can change it's setting while consoles can't.
It's not an advantage. It's been like this since what I remember in DOS. It's the standard. If anything, it's console's shortcoming set by their respective parties.
Don't waste your time down here, it's full of ignorant fanboys.

frame rate drop to 56 fps.
"Literally unplayable" - DF 2017
Where do you hear them say "unplayable" ?
It's called sarcasm, just making fun of DF's sometimes exaggerated nitpicking of 1-5 dropped frames.
AlexanTheMan Digital Foundry’s entire channel is built around analyzing gaming tech and performance. If your feelings get hurt because they point out frame drops maybe you shouldn’t watch their videos.

Hey digital foundry.your youtube video's bitrate very low recently.
Yeah, thougth that too, maybe they want you to support their patreon with this move ;(

Ersan .Ersoy Yeah definitely noticed this recently too, i wonder what could be behind that? :) not that I'm cynical or anything...
TH-cam's fault. It's encoding hates lots of movement like you have in a racing game.
Alex Disibio It definitely seems worse across the board recently though..pretty sure I've noticed that, but yeah fast movement doesn't help. This looks more like streamed PS4 footage than decent capture though I swear its got worse. DF? Can you confirm or deny this? :)

You guys really need to upload your videos in 4k or change your compression method because these compression artifacts make it impossible to see the differences when it's in motion, it looks like crap.
Could someone tell me if this game is HDR?
So we've got the Scorpio unveiling tonight (UK time)
Quite excited to see a video with your thoughts after they show it off. Looking forward to it.
What about PC performance?
pc is superior, what a surprise...
seriously though, stop it with these pathetic console wars, why should you care what system other people play on? we are all gamers at the end of the day, and should get on with each other
Joshua Minke some devs confirmed scorpio is easier to dev for , ac origins looks better on scorpio compared to pc ? Right now according to ubisoft
i imagine the Scorpio version will look very good, it does have alot of grunt, but i dont think it will be quite as good as the pc version, also depends on what they focus on, do they want higher resolution or higher visual settings
lol, ubisoft were also the people who said they prefer 30 fps as it's more cinematic.
Sanji Smutje lol its fucking ubisoft. the same company that claims all PC gamers are pirates
Where did Ubisoft say that?
I don't understand developers choosing MSAA over higher resolution and/or better Post-AA and/or better performance and/or anything else.
So the PC version is just going to ba a footnote at the end? There won't be any framerate comparison with GTX1060 vs. RX580? Disappointing.
I'm a Dirt fan,... but they could've done a better job with the graphics. Dirt 1,2,3 was done very well for it's time. After seeing Forza Horizon 3, I was kinda disappointed with Dirt 4.
In my opinion every game on console should have a 60fps resolution scale mode.
12:40 listen to the pace notes! haha
These graphics could be better across ALL platforms. Why can't we just get Driveclub 2 with 60 FPS? That would be beautiful.
I wonder how long it will take before Microsoft drops support for the Xbox One/S.
PC>Ps4>Xbox1 tell us something we don't know.
@Joaquin Elias González González a motion rig doesn't.🤣
When you guys zoom things, could you just use pixel resize instead of bicubic resampling? It's just a horrible mess to look at. Pixel resize scaling would be sharp and show the resolution difference better.
It's not just that you nearly don't see any difference between PS4 & PS4 Pro. PS4 Pro is just no 4K console. And don't argue with these handful of games that run on scaled 4K!
TH-cam's video compression makes this lose so much quality. :/
i had no idea this was coming out???
Probably gonna skip this on the PRO unless they update it to give a resolution bump.
I already can imagine XBOX ONE X runnig this at 4K and 60fps.
CesAlvz it’s not enhanced for it unfortunately
great game, nice 1080 performance for pro, but it needs a 1440 option with effects in medium-high and solid 60 fps, and finally the VR support for PSVR and PC.
I`ve found the shadow draw distance to be really low... even on ultra =(
i rather the easiness and higher player count of console games but i go to PC for exclusives and games that have mod support and better frame rate ect..! nice video!
Makinnen , Colin , Leob , gronholm , solberg .
I miss the old WRC :(
They talk about image quality so much in this video, so it's funny that the image quality of the video itself is ridiculously low.
Will be interesting to see if Scorpio could run this game @ 4K 60.
peaheaduk loll 4k 60 Jaja like need for speed and asssisns Creed both are 4k 30 on Scorpio lolll
Huh we don't even know how they will run yet . :)
I don't think it will. The cpu would be a problem
Joshua Minke 1080ti I get over 80 fps on ultra 4k
PS4 Pro Best platform to play DIRT 4 on a Full HD TV ...
(because a goos PC will cost soooo much to do same...)
They finally understand that not all players have 4k TV yet !!! and that's great ...
Thanks you Codemasters ... my PS4 Pro thanks you :)
-1 fps is nothing to complain about. It happens in every PC game I've ever played. You don't even notice it.
I don't get it. The pro either has 4k or not and 60fps.
If they can't do 4k 60fps, could they at least double 1080?
Great work - nice insights. thnx
Hi Digital Foundry 🖐
its fucked up how once sony released the ps4 pro they started to put less work into the base ps4 because come on lets face it. if we were still in the base ps4 era without the ps4 pro existing they'd do their best to perfect it more on the base ps4
I'm glad that I own a PS4 Pro, so I don't need to buy a new PC and can stick with Windows 7 (my favorite OS).
what's with the bit rate guys? is this the non patreon crown getting a downgrade. thanks
code masters couldve done much better with pro hardware, just look at gran t sport. anyway it plays beautifully so no drama. locked 60 fps nice
Sure, let's compare Codemasters developing for multiplatform versus a Sony first party studio... Are you serious here??
Pro user getting the shaft , unless it a Sony studio pro support is pretty bad either poorly implemented or not at all. Hopefully Ms new system gets better support.
The cup on that table had no shadow at all!!! no buy. 😊
Screen tearing sucks.
Sony PlayStation ❤❤❤❤
The green scorpio are coming, the green scorpio are coming!
Luv my PS4 pro
Let's be honest, who would want to stick their eyes to the screen just to notice resolution difference between platforms
love your videos but this video is quite poor in image quality?
Honestly I can see absolutely no difference between PS4 and PS Pro...
MarcoNP there is but minimal and unnecessary, buyers of it have been partially scammed tbh
That Dirt Rally music tho.
played both Dirt Rally and Dirt 4 on PC, In my opinion Dirt Rally looks and performs better than Dirt 4.
Me personally PC really is in a league of it's own and can't really compare to consoles, it feels like an unfair advantage cause PC can change it's setting while consoles can't.
It's not an advantage. It's been like this since what I remember in DOS. It's the standard. If anything, it's console's shortcoming set by their respective parties.
all looks the same to billy walker. nice video!
