As a car enthusiast, can you REALLY HATE on a RWD roughly 350HP SMALL COUPE SIZE SPORTS CAR? Do you really want to support SUVs instead? Do you?
Sports cars are already BARELY made , manufacturers can BARELY justify their development costs for most companies. Toyota only justifies it through partnerships and sharing R&D and manufacturing costs with Subaru and BMW.
Imagine how many billions it would take for Toyota to R&D a new inline 6 engine from the ground up AND invest in manufacturing capabilities for a car that will barely sell.
And yes, just reconfiguring a factory floor can take millions or billions.

It's not like only Toyota is benefiting from the partnership. Neither the Z4 or Supra would be released if it wasn't for the deal. BMW has many other RWD convertibles in their lineup, the previous Z4 didn't sell well, so it's not like they needed another one.
@@camryt I agree. But your tone seems to suggest something I didn't say. I never once claimed nor inferred that BMW didn't benefit from it. Actually I never mentioned if anyone in particular benefited largely from it. But u do agree with the point. BMW could get away without the z4 in the line up.
Supra is a legendary name wich will appeal to everyone. If they give it a different name it will just be “another Toyota”...

We don’t have to be thankful for this BMW Supra. Chevrolet just built their own mid engine Corvette for around the same price. There are other good options out there, so we don’t have to be thankful for this.
- whoami - I don’t understand how smaller companies like Mazda can create their own cars, and design their own engines, but the worlds most profitable automaker is trying to convince us that they couldn’t afford to build their own Supra, and if they did build their own Supra it would cost 100 grand. I don’t buy it. I think that’s just their excuse for being to lazy to put in the effort. I mean, Chevy was able to design their own mid engine vette, design a new engine for it, and sell it for about the same price as this Supra. Toyota took the easy way out and let BMW build this for them. It looks to be a great car, and I’d be in line to buy one if it weren’t covered up in ugly fake vents (that were NOT made to become functional).

this Supra has no heritage. It's like the early 2000s, when people wanted metal or rock, and all that you get in exchange was nu metal bands.

I think it ended pretty good. Japan turned from a imperial empire. To a country with capitalism and democracy. It also ended up increasing the Japanese economy immensely. If Japan didn't start the war with America I'm most certain Japan would either be a imperial empire or communist nation with not the best economy, but a good military and you wouldn't see any of these car Manufacturers you'd see to today with Honda, Nissan, Mitsubishi, Toyota, Subaru, Mazda, Suzuki. Basically Japan would most likely be a isolated country.

I don't know why anyone would give this car a try when there are plenty of sports cars to buy from than a BMW... I mean Toyota.
You could buy a performance package Mustang GT for 1000s less, get more power, the engine would sound better, and parts would be cheaper, if not easier to find. Or look at a Focus RS if you like something a little more nimble around the corners.
Compare the prices (after options), and power from all three vehicles.
That's my opinion, though. Hope you enjoy your rebadge Z4, my friend.
Now, you can walk into a Toyota showroom and walk out with a BMW :)

Damm near 0 people purchase a $50,000 dollar car and choose a manual, so what the hell would be the point of offering a manual when at best 10% of the supras sold would be use it
@@smittgy576 Except where Porsche was forced by consumer backlash to re-add manual option to the GT3 when they went PDK only. A sports car is often less about the raw numbers and more about the experience, hence why the little under-powered Miata is still a strong seller today despite beige sedans having quicker 0-60s and 300+ hp.
So for your average driver who buys a 50k car for status yes it doesn't matter for many enthusiasts it is a significant issue.
Allan Croskery thats a fair thing to say and i agree with you to an extent, but it would still not make much financial sense to pay the additional cost to outfit the car with a manual, as they would likely lose money by doing that. Toyota already had to partner with BMW in order to create the new supra, so i dont think they are really in a position to lose money on a car which they did not even have enough money to create themselves.

Toyota doesn't have a running straight 6 engine, the JZ series engine wont pass modern strict emission control. if it wants to built one from scratch, it will take extra time just for testing alone. And the stand alone new Supra will most probably come to us sometime 2021-22.
The reason why Toyota brought this car back is simple - fast n furious.
Come back too late and ppl will forget the madness of supra featured in film series.
Both BMW and Toyota are smart companies. There is something that Toyota is offering to BMW in return.
Just like Mercedes Benz and Nissan. Merc supplied engine tranny combo for Nissan Skyline and Nissan shared it's Navara truck for Merc to sell.
So let get this, its really just a Break My Wallet and that means exactly that. You can throw away that Japanese bullet proof reliability now that its a BMW. The Toyota in America is legendary for its reliability but BMW are known for the opposite. In America we call em Break My Wallet

Nice video, was hoping you had some insight about the non-functional vents and how much the car improves with functional vents. I've seen a video that points out how the vents can be functional and they're already prepped for modification. I personally love how the Toyota Supra is back even with Bavarian Motor Works guts.

The sound is actually designed to be different from the BMW models through the ASD. It should sound quite a bit different. You didn't mention that you can't see any BMW badge in the cabin and software, only in the engine bay. I think they did a good job there.

Such a dumb thing to say. He isn't supposed to be Richard Hammond. Hammond, Clarkson and May left Top Gear THREE years ago and they're done fine without them. There is no need to imitate anyone. The original Top Gear trio was entertainment. They would come up with some ridiculous challenge that would tell me nothing of value about the car whereas this is a car review that does.
If you just want dumb entertainment with cars, go watch a Fast and the Furious movie or The Grand Tour.

I'm honestly disappointed when this guy is the one doing a review. The first thing I see is him slamming the gear stick, as if he is pretending to change gear in a manual car, and needed to slam it, then him flexing, because that is somehow relevant?...... Yes, maybe he was putting into a sports mode, like on most BMWs, but it is an electronic switch, it is unnecessary to be so heavy handed that it appears you're trying to relocate it into the engine bay, and it is probably now mildly broken, haha....

The New Supra is just as exciting as when my E46 M3 first came out, amazing looking body shell with a wide body, BMW engine and tranny and interior 🤭😁👍👍👍 can’t beat it, hopefully it’s as reliable as a Toyota, and I will have no problem driving one of these for the rest of my life 😁😎👍👍👍
How on earth do you expect it to be as reliable as a toyota when all the mechanical components are BMW.
Toyota did say they inspected all of the parts used in the car, and that it met their standards for reliability and design

Cre8tive Cre8tion i seriously doubt Toyota would put on of their main selling points of their entire range of vehicles on the line, just so they could sell slightly more supras, which dont even make them as much profit as their little eco cars. It would make no sense, from any point of view to risk the massive negative media coverage and lose their reputation for reliability just so they could sell slightly more of just one vehicle in their entire range
@@Cre8tive81I believe they did that, because it comes with usual Toyota warranty. If it breaks often like you suppose, the warranty costs way too much for Toyota.
Best of both worlds! I like the collaboration. BMWs are pure drivers cars. And Toyota Supra is just cool.

Nobody cared about the Mk4 before fast and furious. Nobody wanted to buy them. And for good reason, it wasn't that good a car from the factory.

I bet you do not have the mark 1 A80 supra, nor perhaps driven one... I did drive it back in 1995 and raced it with my 1989 pontiac trans am... Didnt have the bottom grunt to keep up with the trans am upto 85 mph and was after boosted to go up to 157mph... Nothing special really back in the days... Small trunk and make belief rear seats, compared to my pontiac trans am with the natural 5.7 liters engine!!!

This competes with the Z4 basically not the M2 because the M2 would murder the Supra, has almost 100HP more than the B58
??? M2 actually uses the old n55 engine the b58 in the Supra has a bigger turbo and more room for power. M2 is also just a shortened bmw 3 series chassis while Supra uses a dedicated sports car chassis that is much stiffer and lower then an m2.
It's not in the market for the m2...its aiming toward the 370z

The dedicated chassis is basically the same platform almost as BMWs in general. BMW designed the chassis and they didn’t make it any different really from the 2 series or 3 series

It never was, the stock 90s Supra wasn't anything to brag about around a track, unless modified like any other car, could be supercar killer, and if they made it one, the price would be $150,000 instead of $50,000. Making an already hard to reach car an unreachable car for lower income people.
@@magnificent10304 Yes it was and was mentioned in this video for a reason. It pegged many of the performance metrics of it's day and did very well at the strip and track due to it's huge grip, balance, and power compared to it's segment and punched above it's price. Examples: It held the 70-0 braking record of ANY car until the 250K Porsche Carrera beat it many years later in 2004. It also had some of the highest power output in the early-mid 90s compared to many other impressive cars of it's day (Corvette LT1, 3000GT, 300ZX, Stealth Turbo, Lotus Esprit, Porsche 911, RX7, Grand National, Camaro Z28, etc,). Lateral grip was almost 1g which was way up there for it's time.

"All the supra touchpoints" ... The supra touchpoints were the insane engine and the powertrain that could handle it. The styling was nice and all but people don't buy Mk4 supras for style, do they? The main style touchpoint I can think of was that curved back wing..and that's gone, too.
I like the BMW Z4. It's a nice car. Now there are two z4's because this is not a supra.
Toyota should have gone to the US to design this car, not to Europe. They turned it into a rich man's wife's car and took away its muscle-car style
