The A80 Mk4 Supra was a supercar killer fresh out of the factory. Car magazines at the time pitched it against the Porsche 911 Turbo, the Ferrari Testarossa, and the Aston Martin DB7. That still didn't stop people over time from tuning these monsters through the roof thanks to that legendary 2JZ engine. The A80 was sadly withdrawn from all markets by 2002. But after a long hiatus of the Supra badge, we now have the latest-generation A90, developed in partnership with BMW.
How will the A90 GR Supra 3.0 Pro do against its predecessor around the Top Gear test track in the hands of The Stig? How close will Becky Evans's predictions be? Watch to find out...

Not anymore. How far Top gear has fallen. Also weird that they choose the 3 year old A90, not the revised model with some suspension and engine tweaks.
@@abelincoln4374 right. The 2021+ is 382 bhp and dynos over that number. But 2021 isn't easily tuneable where the 2020 has a traditional tune process. The a90 should be modded too (if it wasn't, I didn't see)
mine is 100% stock. nothing is changed completely stock. 😌 spent 3 years chasing one. found it last year 😎 and now it’s in my sweet garage
What really bugs me is that they are not using a stock A80, this is hardly a fair test tbh
OTOH they used a sucky automatic from the early nineties... It should have been a manual. And same tyre model on both cars.

I appreciate effort but agree, 525hp for the a80? Did not look like it, I know the 4speed auto is terrible but still, it looked it had 200 hp.
It’s amazing how an independent channel like Throttle House outdoes Thee Holy Top Gear for a comparison video + track test. Couldn’t help to notice how slow (as in boring) some of the track-driving bits are and made me realize the pure entertainment TH offers over this.

Anyone who has driven the 2jzgte with the stock auto knows that was not a fair match up. The stig didn't even shift it himself instead he just left it in D.
It is a fair match up. Shows how much shittier the old tech in the mk4 truly is compared to the new and modern tech in the mk5

I own a few Supras both 6 speeds and autos, the a340 is plenty good if it’s driven hard, what they seem to never want to do to push these cars, they never really drove the mkiv properly carwow or officially gassed or whatever show they never hammer these mkiv Supras like they should

@@joshuadqueen Doubtful. No human can shift as fast as a modern auto. But the A340 would probably be slower than a competent driver behind a V160.
@@joshuadqueen no it wouldn't best it, no manual transmission can even get close to the newer automatic transmissions. Autos from the 90s are trash in comparison to both stickshift and new autos
A stock A80 running correctly with a manual transmission would have been a cool comparison.

this auto tranny was not meant to shift hard around corner also the bigger turbo need longer spool time to give significant power.. i bet this a80 could do better in dragrace.

Such a weird review. They choose to use the 3 year old model with slightly less power and some suspension issues that were addressed the next year. And they use an Automatic MK4 tuned to 520HP. What's the point of this?
Ok, so new supra feels good (a generic statement used to describe every car in this series) feels like a BMW (never heard that one before) and the old car is legendary and modified (no indictation to what exactly has been done to it). There was nothing new in this video. It's staggering how you've made a video like this with all that talent and material to your disposal. I'd recommend everybody to go over to the Hagerty channel to check out what a good company backed effort looks like. Also which lunatic decided to tune an auto Supra like that?

What a waste of 8min.. A80 has the 4-speed Auto. Awful gearbox! I can appreciate that the mods were probably allowed because the gearbox is so awful but c'mon! If you couldn't find a standard manual car just don't do the test??
It’s not a bad gearbox bro, it’s just old tech, the a340 box is great for what it’s made for, a reliable and robust transmission that is plenty fast

Speaking of mechanical sympathy, doesn’t look like the prior owner had much with the smoke screen of oil and something weird was going on with the transmission slipping or upshifting early 🤔

The old auto gearbox didn’t help, it’s a bit slow compared to modern boxes. Put a decent mod on that and it would be much closer
No it won’t might shave off 3 seconds, but that’s still 7 seconds slower than mk5. B58 all day

Shouldn't this be stock vs stock? MK4 220hp vs MK5 GR Pro 340hp. And that MK4 looked slower than stock while being tuned with 520hp.

Ive never seen a modified turbo mk4 that was auto. (Besides like drag 4sp/3sp trans and dct)
Stig must have been frustrated as hell with the performance of that automatic (and the noticeable turbo lag). Horrible!

Well this comparison is quite a Joke, if you're gonna use a modified Mk4 supra (AUTO? WTF) with like 450 hp why don't you get a GT500 (JGTC) modified Supra and then kill it on the track being the fastest car? this makes non sense at all.
The bigger joke is that the Supra is a rebadged BMW.
At least the Mk4 is a Toyota. 🤣

Hey Top Gear, I’d recommend that you consider bringing Matt Watson on in a regular way to interject some review of the week, buying strategies and a drag race with the regular presenters. A partnership with Carwow might really work.
Patty, Chris and Andrew are good but I’m sure it’s been mentioned that there is still a missing element. Matt Watson might finally bring the spark back to TopGear

Controversial option the old Supra isn’t very good and is only liked because of its strong engine. It’s an absolute boat of a car that’s far too big and heavy to be a good sports car
Ironically same thing can be said about the Lexus LFA….. take away it’s amazing engine and it is a relatively heavily (for what it is) car with numb handling and slow shifting transmission. Toyota really struggles with building proper drivers sports cars. Thank god for the GR86 and Corolla/Yaris GR

You clearly were not old enough to remember the impact the A80 Supra had when it was new. I do, I had many magazines back in the 90's when the MK4 was new. It shocked the sports car world by beating Ferrari 348, Porsche 911 Turbo, corvette ZR1 and even Ferrari testarossa. It had higher grip in the skidpad than all of the cars mentioned. The A80 had a braking record that was only beaten by the Porsche Carrera GT supercar.
@@theempires5 The engine made it even more legendary. The A80 when it was new beat cars that were way more expensive like the 911 Turbo and Ferrari Testarossa.
why is the mk4 a automatic and not a manual
Im not really sure, it would make sense for the mk5 to be a auto, but not the mk4. I own a targa top mk4 that was a auto, that gearbox was pure shit.
I assume to have auto vs auto. My question is why does the Mk4 have so much power? Were they that powerful from the factory and I never knew it? Or did the UK get a more powerful version that the US didn't? Or has it been modded, and if so, why couldn't they get a stock one?
@@howardbrandon11 I belive all countries that recivied the MK4 got the same versions as everyone else just certain things to diffrent to make the diffrent according to the countries laws. but auto vs auto makes no sense. The MK4 has a much older gearbox, a lot slower than the MK5. And it pretty difficult to get a MK4 that is stock. Most has atleast something aftermarket on them. My MK4 was revived from a scrapyard, so barely any Original parts, any parts that were original were super expensive to buy.

The one used in this video was obviously tuned a bit, they probably allowed it to make up for that dog of an auto it has! Yeah a manual would be fairer considering the age difference

Saying the A90 is a bmw is like saying the A80 is a yamaha
If toyota made its own engine and transmission the car would be waaay more expensive
People hate on the J29 MKV (not A90, it’s not it’s chassis code) because it doesn’t showcase what Toyota can actually do with it.
It’s a very capable sports car though.
@@t-boi8327 Or Toyota would have had to cut back on R&D (and cut corners in general) resulting in a slower car for the same price (*cough* NIssan Z) or no new Supra at all. I think the BMW collab worked out fantastic for Toyota (I have a 2021 GR Supra in my garage now). It has amazing performance for the price.

The MK4 was Toyotas answer to the Nissan 300ZX twin turbo not the GT-R.

Obviously an auto MK4 isn't gonna do well, should've compared a manual one. Of course it still wouldn't win because it's old tech, but it still would have been more enjoyable for the Stig.

I did not hear of any reach out within the Supra community about who's Supra would be best suited.
You obviously want a twin turbo 6-speed manual, RZ with appropriate wheels and tyres for the current era. Eg. 18x10 inch rims running 265-295 width pilot super sports. And I would allow a full exhaust as a modification

Just wish that this element of the TG TH-cam channel was a little longer. A bit more of you behind the wheel, a longer overview of the car, and interview with the Stig...ok, maybe the last bit is too much ;)

Seems about right. A stock a80 would of done even worse, manual or not. The A90 is only the 2020 version too. If it was the US spec with 380 or so whp with improved chassis tuning? It wouldnt even be a comparison.
Bottom line is both the A80 and A90 are great for whatever you are into. You can travel, cruise, road race, drift or drag. 👍

Only reason the MK4 is still really talked about is because of its role in F&F. It's not because it was a ground breaking car or even that great during its time. It was never much of a handler. It has a robust engine, that's about it. That doesn't make it a great drivers car like the cult status makes people think. It's a barge. Unless I want something with insane tuned-power levels that goes quickly in a straight line with big turbo lag, I can think of many, many cars I'd rather have. Even with that description, I'd rather have a big-power modern GTR. 90's Japanese cars, NSX hands down. NSX is a special car with a lot of firsts. Supra is an average car with a strong engine.
Yes, people get a Supra for the 2JZ GTE. That's no wonder less people are hyped about the A90 Supra.

That b58 will be an expensive mess to repair in 10 years max while the 2jz will still be reliable and working
take a peek at the top 10 fastest street legal imports 1/4 times, 2jz are very relevant, however they are being built into billet blocks.

The 2jz is actually getting pretty expensive to work on. It's a thirty year old engine, just getting your hands on one can be tricky. Unless they for some God forsaken reason bring it back into production, it's only going to continue to become more expensive as more bite the dust.

I see this was posted 12 days ago but when was it recorded? They are using the lower hp 2020 Supra at 335hp instead of the higher hp 2021 & 2022 at 385hp? Why?

Maybe test this against a MKIV that doesn't have a hurt motor? The valves on that thing are shot so it's going to be down on compression. Not to mention the fact the torque converter in an old A340 30-40LE transmission are basically made from cheese and the stock shift points are stupid. How long did the Stig sit on the rev limiter between shift!? Of all the MKIV Supras to get in the UK, this is probably one of the worst possible examples.

Just so you know. Back in the day…A clio 182 cup done the test track in 1min33.8 so that old supra is a fucking tank with a turbo
Seeing both of these gems go head to head was rewarding. I enjoyed the video and didn't think the A80 would be where it was. Still a wonderful car.
