After watching probably 100 different videos that were not helpful at all, I can't believe how easy you made it look. Thank you so much for creating this simple-to-follow, exactly-what-I-needed video! :D
Great video, thank you! I just wanted to add, to those asking about finding the wire harness (for the 05 Grand Am and others)........spend the extra 70 bucks and purchase the Scosche Replacement Interface, part number GM2000FA. What isn't very widely described is that the interface CONTAINS the wire harness needed to hook cleanly into the factory receiver unplugged from the factory stereo. I lost a day looking for the harness, bought the interface and lo and behold, damn thing was in there too. The added bonus of buying the interface is you retain all the warnings chimes. Don't even try and cheap out, just buy the thing. I also purchased the Scosche installation kit GMT2049AF. Each wire from the JVC stereo harness matched up perfectly to the Scosche receiver, color for color. And lastly, I made a mistake and didn't buy the Antennae adapter. Yep, the factory aerial is smaller, went back and bought universal adapter UAA1F. I called around looking for a wire harness, one stereo shop tried to sell me the interface and harness for $150.....nothing wrong with profit but Walmart had them for half that.
After seeing hundreds of "how-to" videos on TH-cam with off camera action, terrible lighting, unnecessary footage, and lousy music, I was impressed with the production value of this video. I wasn't really looking for this video, I just happened to stumble across it. Good work.
Thank you so much, but you have an older version of cables. I had a slightly newer version and a new chime box where I can turn a switch and make the sound more quiet. Thanks anyway, you gave me the confidence to pursue this and it turned out exactly has planned. The directions were kind of confusing, but after you just match up the colors everything worked out fine. Thanks! :)
I installed a radio to my gf's car, when i brought the cables together, i did them with black tape, the one that is very hard to come out. My only concern is that ive seen some people using a lighter to heat up the tape after both cables are together, but i didnt do that at all. but i did made sure to tape them right, and put extra tape on them too.
Best video I have seen so far....Ignore the neg comments. The radio I am removing has those nobs. It is an after market and I am gonna have to do the connects in the car and I will not be using heat tools. I do admit ..I think the old radio doesn't work because of these connections losing some contact over the last ten years.
@ Ricardo you might need an accessory wire I had to get an accessory wire for my 2010 Chevy cobalt cause the car didn't have the red power wire but if that's the case take your care to a stereo place and let them install everything I learned how to do my stuff my watching my cuzzin install my system in my moms truck
Good video overall, however; It is worth noting that in at least the 05 Grand Am, simply matching the colored wires does not quite do the job. Apparently the red switched power wire must be connected to some other source other than the corresponding red wire in the dash radio harness. I read somewhere that possibly a dark green wire in the ignition switch works. Have yet to locate and try it. Everything else as shown in this video works as described.
Thanks for posting, you have a very nice video. I recommend using a aftermarket wire harnesses like metra a and b clips. They are pretty cheap on eBay and save Loy's of time and or guess work.
good video. do you know if steering wheel controls still work if i install a new radio in my grand am? and does the chime work if i take out the old radio? BTW were did you get that black harness thing the radio goes in ( 00:27 ) ?
the orange wires arent for sub out they are for the dimming of the stereo lights, some aftermarket stereos use them, most dont. just make sure theyre covered up good otherwise your dash lights fuse will pop and you wont see your speedo and stuff.
WARNING: You should NEVER use twist locks to join wires in a car. Road vibrations cause them to come loose and the elements will cause them to corrode prematurely. Even though this is a just a stereo and not some vital piece of equipment, a loose wire can potentially cause a short circuit. The radio shares a circuit with other vital components such as SRS airbag system, Body Control Module, and the instrument cluster. Butt connectors often come loose as well, and allow air and moisture to corrode the conductors. Although this method is unlikely to cause serious damage, it may lead to a lot frustration later, and a blown fuse may leave you stranded. A true professional always solders joints or finds a safer, reliable alternative (NOT scotch locks or wire taps).
Hello Michaganshooter, I was wondering about the Chime that you added. I'm confused on how you're suppose to splice that into the wiring harnesses. What color wire do you splice to the chime? And would this also work for my 2002 Grand Am. Thanks.
You are gonna need a multi-meter and a battery. Use the volt meter to figure out which wire goes to the battery (often yellow), which wire comes from ignition (often red), and the ground wire (probably black). Then use the battery to figure out the speaker wire. Usually the two wires going to each speaker and similar colors, like green and green with a white line on it. find the pairs and touch them to the battery. You'll hear the speaker make a crackling noise and know that pair to that speaker
+Chris Wooster Can't find the box anymore - the radio & kit sellers are usually pretty good about matching radio/kit, etc to car if you call their 800#
You want to doublecheck what are usually the red and yellow wires inside the dashboard for continuous and switched 12v - IF you're doing a new install, trying to splice into wires in the dash (like after someone cuts off the harness while stealing the radio). In this case we didn't need to check because we plugged into the car's still-intact wiring harness (at 6:56).
This is silly but I was stuck on my install. I didn't realize that you bent the tabs on the housing. One minute in I was educated. Smooth sailing - just wanted to say thanks.
the "remote" wire goes to a subwoofer amplifier and turns it on only when the car is on so it doesnt drain your battery. unless you have an amplifier, dont worry about the remote wire
BTW, great tutorial. I just have one question. Is it a best practice to still add an additional ground wire even though both your wire harness and radio harness include one? Or were you just including that step as if the harness didn't include a ground wire.
Do you not use ISO plugs in the States? The same radio would come with ISO sockets in Europe. Then we would buy an adapter from the manufacturers harness to ISO plugs, meaning the whole thing is plug and play. No stripping or crimping of wires required.
Tape up those unused wires... also use electrical tape for each connection just incase one comes loose... the ors get is illumination btw. So goes to your sidelight. Etc. Blue is electrical aerial.
What kind of harness are you using? I mean the one that is connected to the car's cable. It is that I have already bought 2 that according to were compatible but they did not work. Buy the AVH-210 EX and I've tried a lot and it does not connect
Well Done. This was a very nice video. Informative, to the point, nothing annoying. I comment on youtube about once year, that I have taken time to comment on your video at all is a very high complement from me.
I have the same car (04 Grand Am) and need to swap my stock radio out for one that has Aux. ports. I have the new radio and all but was wondering do i have to buy the wiring harness you were with in order to connect the radio to the wires? Or will the stock harness automatically connect? If that makes sense. And also, i'll be adding wires that run to an amp in the back. That would be the power wire for the amp and a few others. Where do they connect? Thanks.
Hi! I'm wondering, do I have to cut some wires from my new unit, it has already all wires connected, but do I have to ground it some how, and do I have to worry about the "Remote" wire or is it only for amp?

this is probably the best demonstration on youtube on how to do an install!! NICE WORK!!!!

Your choice of music was awesome! Great video. Thank you.
Cool editing and cool choice of music. Informational and entertaining.
Just gotta day this guitar is amazing! Wow I love how relaxing feel it gave me while working on my radio
i have liked this video it has even equiped me with new techniques as a junior electrician.....
You make it look very simple thank you.
GREAT video!!! easy to understand and shows great detail. THANKS!!!

Great video nice neat install.
thanks man great video everything I wanted to see

I like your taste in music
Brilliant tutorial, nice music choice aswell ;)
Absolutely awesome! Thank you so much you saved me at least $70
This video was a big help 😀

Finally, someone using a good song to test a radio on...
"And nothing else matters"
good job editing the video. not what I was looking for but damn this is one a nice video. LIKE!
blue is "amp turn on" and blue with white is "power antenna" used for raising those fun antennas
thanks did the tail lights and the daylights work after
very nice video and presentation. thank you very much.
nice video, love the reggae background music ;)
thats raggea? lol
Yes it is reggae
+Keon Rexted U wot m8?
Thanks for the vid. Great editing
this is very educational, thanks man
Really great and detailed, thank you
Thanks man this video helped me out a lot
From my experience, it all depends on the car. Some radios (don't quote me on this) have them built in.
sei un genio!!!! gran bel tutorial
good video. do you know if steering wheel controls still work if i install a new radio in my grand am? and does the chime work if i take out the old radio? BTW were did you get that black harness thing the radio goes in ( 00:27 ) ?

Also, very well done how-to video, great visuals, professional production quality.
Chris Joseph just to let you know a lot of professional uses butt connectors and wire nuts
Twist locks is for home wiring.
This is a clean video. I am new in this, do I need to buy a new chime or there is one already on the car?
Thanks
thank you for teh one on grounding
Wow this video is great !!
Thanks, Good work.
Thanks for the video helps me out a lot
Metallica at the end? Perfect.
Thumbs up for Metallica on the radio!
thank you very much for man you need to get more views for real
The music makes me wanna play the sims
just a note if you got the Scosche GMT2049 dash kit, then the whole part of putting the radio in the plastic case part is different (0:30, and 7:50).
Hello Michaganshooter, I was wondering about the Chime that you added. I'm confused on how you're suppose to splice that into the wiring harnesses. What color wire do you splice to the chime? And would this also work for my 2002 Grand Am. Thanks.

Thanks for this video, it helped
thanks for explaining
can you make a video on replacing the radio to a ford taurus? apparently it's a lot different from changing others.
i matched up all the colors and did exactly this... no sound on my front right speaker...
+Chris Wooster Can't find the box anymore - the radio & kit sellers are usually pretty good about matching radio/kit, etc to car if you call their 800#
Shouldn't you check the voltage while installing these? At which stage would you do that?

You did need to use a PAC radio pro when installing the radio into that grand am
The orange and orange/white striped wires are not sub out? It is illumination and dimmer function to dim the HU when you turn your headlights on
I have a 04 alero. Thank you bro
This was awesome. Thanks so much. It helped alot!!
and what a Cd and song have lol nothing is matter lol you rock
How do you know the measurements for the right installation/mounting kit and the aftermarket radio?
You need a good stereo system for your awesome eclectic taste in music.
Thanks
my car is perfect
Good stuff! Thank you-thank you - thank you !!!
Great video, now what to do if the wire colors are not the same??
Well you're fucked
BTW, great tutorial. I just have one question. Is it a best practice to still add an additional ground wire even though both your wire harness and radio harness include one? Or were you just including that step as if the harness didn't include a ground wire.
The instructions called for the ground wire splicing. Might have something to do with that particular radio interfacing with that particular vehicle.
Do you not use ISO plugs in the States? The same radio would come with ISO sockets in Europe. Then we would buy an adapter from the manufacturers harness to ISO plugs, meaning the whole thing is plug and play. No stripping or crimping of wires required.
I seen on another video I had to connect it to an accessory wire so it turned the radio off, is that true?
Thank you!!
Tape up those unused wires... also use electrical tape for each connection just incase one comes loose... the ors get is illumination btw. So goes to your sidelight. Etc. Blue is electrical aerial.
Omg, I look this up just because I am curious and need a little help. and literally this is my exact car and the exact system I just bought
i need help with connecting ground wire can it be connected to anywhere on metal plate?
HELP! My sub's in my 88 Chevy won't come on I matched and connected all colors on wire hardness
What kind of harness are you using? I mean the one that is connected to the car's cable. It is that I have already bought 2 that according to were compatible but they did not work. Buy the AVH-210 EX and I've tried a lot and it does not connect
Are wire buts a must? Like the plastic things
I already have an aftermarket radio in my car, so I was wondering if I needed to do all the things with the wires. Someone please respond ASAP
The music mad
...I like the rusted screwdrive!! 😅😅
Big help, thanks
Well Done. This was a very nice video. Informative, to the point, nothing annoying. I comment on youtube about once year, that I have taken time to comment on your video at all is a very high complement from me.
Very useful video! Do you live in northern illinois/southern wisconsin, and was that station 95 wiil rock?
would you know if Pioneer MVH-160Ui comes with a cage aswell ? like the one on your video comes with a cage .
my thing from @35 seconds doesn't fit(too big) and I have the correct one for my car, any suggestions??
I have the same car (04 Grand Am) and need to swap my stock radio out for one that has Aux. ports. I have the new radio and all but was wondering do i have to buy the wiring harness you were with in order to connect the radio to the wires? Or will the stock harness automatically connect? Hi! I'm wondering, do I have to cut some wires from my new unit, it has already all wires connected, but do I have to ground it some how, and do I have to worry about the "Remote" wire or is it only for amp?
what was the wire used to connect the original black wire from the car to the new radio? that's the only piece I'm missing.
NOTHING ELSE MATTERS!!
I got it working now, thanks! :)
perfect video
Do you have to use the secondary harness? can I just hardwire the original harness in the car to the harness that comes with the radio?
That metal brace/ cage that you pulled off the radio in the beginning, does that come with the radio ? Or did it Come with the mounting hardware
If you mean from 00:11 - 00:21, that came with the radio
Sounds like your constant power wire and ignition wire could be installed wrong. Or just a bad constant wire. Check all your wires
