It does this by first encoding the video in an existing codec, then extracting the differences between the original frame and the encoded frame. Special algorithms are used to compress this data and send it to the decoder where it is reconstructed and added on top of the frame encoded by the base codec.

It would be extremely inefficient to run an ENTIRE codec as a shader. Developers already have a hard enough time getting software encoders to fully saturate the 10s of SIMD lanes per a CPU core, let alone thousands. There's a bar here where the owner has just a car radio as a stereo in the bar too and in a nice custom black wood box. I think at some point they weren't that uncommon but nowadays it's probably pretty rare to see anyone caring for such thing but it totally works well is for subwoofers since you can buy crazy loads of power for cheap with used old car cheap crap audio that will still make a huge kick at home though not the best...

I got an MP5 for Christmas when I was like 6yo. I got too much joy out of it. I could listen to music, watch VC, record videos and even play games. I still have it, and finding it was amazing, uncovering recordings from over a decade ago. One of these recordings was me and my sister, on the way back home from school, in the back of the car, attempting to sing the opening to American dad (I didn't speak english at the time, so it was pure gibberish, save from the first sentence)

From how I understood it, mp3s were audio-only media players, mp4s were audio AND video media players, and mp5s they were media players AND had a 360p camera. My friends had mp5s and they'd go around taking pics of each other and stuff. This was 2008, when smartphones weren't mainstream (in my country anyway) and they (I didn't have a phone at the time) all had nokia brick phones with meh quality cameras and that 2g-MMS thingy.

I ended up getting an android tablet instead (it was android 4.4 at the time, and dual core was a feature to advertise in the front of the box), and that was the first android device in my family (my parents were still using Nokia phones)
I got an MP5 player as an award for a speech competition like seven years ago. It could play your usual audio and video files, and also had some product placement vids already in it, lol. It also came with a few games, like Fleabag vs Mutt, Hexxagon, a bowling game and some others. The touchscreen was absolute garbage, but it made my childhood. Fun times.

In some countries it made sense. Because of higher import taxes on home stereos or that tv and home radios had licensing fees.
This is exactly what I use for my computer speakers, an automotive amplifier bolted to a 12 volt power supply, both from the 1980s.

I got an MP5 for Christmas when I was like 6yo. I got too much joy out of it. I could listen to music, watch VC, record videos and even play games. I still have it, and finding it was amazing, uncovering recordings from over a decade ago. One of these recordings was me and my sister, on the way back home from school, in the back of the car, attempting to sing the opening to American dad (I didn't speak english at the time, so it was pure gibberish, save from the first sentence)

I actually remember a ton of bootleg garbage branded as "MP5 PLAYER" during the MP4 player boom. Good times. As a kid I just thought MP5 meant "it plays everything, including videos" (which was a big deal back then)

I was in highschool when mp5s were a thing. From how I understood it, mp3s were audio-only media players, mp4s were audio AND video media players, and mp5s they were media players AND had a 360p camera. My friends had mp5s and they'd go around taking pics of each other and stuff. This was 2008, when smartphones weren't mainstream (in my country anyway) and they (I didn't have a phone at the time) all had nokia brick phones with meh quality cameras and that 2g-MMS thingy.
The Dank and James dynamic are two polar opposites, yet they fit together so well. I love it.
Keen to see this eventually evolve into the mp9, really excited for that, can't wait.

I remember i wanted to get an "mp5" player as kid, at that point i had had an mp3 player, and a few mp4 ones (only used them for mp3). It was just an mp4 player with a touch screen and i think it had a camera too. I ended up getting an android tablet instead (it was android 4.4 at the time, and dual core was a feature to advertise in the front of the box), and that was the first android device in my family (my parents were still using Nokia phones)

I got an MP5 player as an award for a speech competition like seven years ago. It could play your usual audio and video files, and also had some product placement vids already in it, lol. It also came with a few games, like Fleabag vs Mutt, Hexxagon, a bowling game and some others. The touchscreen was absolute garbage, but it made my childhood. Fun times.
