    I feel obstructed mostly by my mom where even at the mention of ANY guy, she would think "you need protection", don't get raped, etc. she is suspicious of any friendships with guys and she really only emphasizes the possibilities of bad situations and basically lives out of fear: every man is a sexual predator. it really sickens me.
    it's silly how parents say "you can come to me for anything" for support yet when you do, all you get is yelling, getting scolded, and lectures. they do come from good intentions, but that's where parents become helicopter parents and do more harm than good to your self-confidence, esteem, and love life.

      I think its a scary world out there for a lot of people. I learned about a term called Mean World syndrome in college. It basically states that we are bombarded with negative stories in the media constantly and that begins to shape our view of the world. Unfortunately you see more and more people acting like this :( -Allen

      Girl, I'm not even Asian but this is so relatable. I used to think that all man are good for nothings that only wanted to hurt you (emotionally or physically) due to this upbringing. Typing this out sounds so absurd.
      It's sad and ironical I learnt a lot about social interaction by talking to friends on the internet but I'm glad about it. I learnt that not every man is there to screw your life over. I used to be in shock that when I met my SO one day and realised that there are many wonderful kind men like him, who really care about you. I hope that every girl in a similar situation will be able to figure out things for her and find someone who loves and appreciates her 😊

    My parent said not to have boyfriend until collage. When I'm collage, they say focus on my studies. When I finished my studies, now focus on your carrier. So, until now (26 y.o) I never have boyfriend. Same thing happen to my siblings. We sometime think we want to try dating, but don't really want to.

      That is how Asian parents ruined their children's life.I 've heard of many cases just like yours.These girls later realized all the decent guys are taken even during college years. Clueless Asian parents still think prevent them dating is " For Their Own Good"

      in my family my mum is vietnamese and dad is Chinese
      my mum is actually the opposite to what most Asian mums are like when the approach comes to dating she basically is like if your happy with that girl (even a non asian girl)it's fine but same sex marriage would be a diffrent story.
      my Chinese dad is also similar expect it's more traditional so I can't even get a relationship until after university and that i need a stable job and income so those are the 2 diffrent sides for me.

    I’ve always been to uncomfortable talking about relationships to my parents. My dad is a western guy, and my mom is Cambodian. So you would think I would get the best of both worlds having a chill white dad and a strict Asian mom but that’s not the case. My mom says I can’t date until I’m out of college, but I feel like while I’m too busy trying to get my life together after graduation, finding a boyfriend would get harder and harder, then eventually I’ll end up alone and single because I was restricted from doing those sort of things as a teen. I feel like the experience would be more awkward too when I have a relationship when I’m older. My dad is too scary to talk to about these types of things and it makes me the most uncomfortable talking to him, he’s a nice person and all, but he holds grudges, is passive aggressive, and really scary. I feel like if I ever told him I had a boyfriend he would kill him and disown me. :(

    My parents keep on telling me to take my time with relationships (I'm 24 and never dated), but lately they'd ask occasional questions about my female friends, like, oh, does she take care of you well, or is she a good friend, repeatedly, over and over again, to the point I literally stop telling my parents whenever I'm hanging out with a female friend.

  • @user-sh3xo1gj7q
    @user-sh3xo1gj7q 8 ปีที่แล้ว +28

    I'm too socially awkward to get into a romantic relationship, let alone to make friends! So "having a relationship" was never a real topic. :P
    My mom brings it up sometimes though, saying stuff like "You need to know how to do - - - to be a good mother."
    The most annoying are my Asian relatives and acquaintances. Every time they see me, they ask "Texting your boyfriend?" or something like "Do you have a boyfriend?", I'm always like ........... no. No.
    Idk I think that it's super embarrassing.

    It's just me or the way Asians in general relate socially is just by way of keeping good appearance in front of the public eyes by avoiding gossips and scandals. Social interactions in a more Western way are usually more open, and the word awkward don't apply so much to the insiders but Vice Versa.

    Growing up in China, this is what parents around me do
    (excluding mine, they are cool, crazy by Chinese standard. My mom never said lying is bad, just that if you lie and get caught, you will face consequences, resulting in me having no concept of right and wrong but will follow the law due to fear of prison)
    My friends told me: "focus on study they say, don't get relationship until you finish PhD they say, and immediately afterward, they would say you are 24, why don't you have boy/girlfriend, and they will sign you up for all kinds of dating for marriage agencies"

    Could you guys do a video about homosexuality on asian society/culture? I had a coworker who was a Japanese gay man, and he told that his parents would never say anything to him about it, but every time the subject was brought the disappointment on their faces was very visible, and they never allowed him to introduce any of his boyfriends to them, they would always make an excuse to avoid it, and overall in Japan he never faced direct homophobia like he faced when he moved back here to Brazil, so that made me curious if that is the case with other Asian cultures, or even if it's a commonplace or it is just his family who acts that way.

      ***** at least in contrast to what people suffer here in Brazil it's absurdly different, in his words, it was more a "let's not delve into this topic" kinda of thing, but everyone would treat him normally as long as he would not "demonstrate" most people were indifferent, while here in Brazil there's a wide spectrum from people who would be really excited to show support, to people who are beat to death just for "looking kinda gay".

    First off guys I think that those video clips from those movies are absolutely hysterical and the points you guys have a pretty relevant but you also have a put in the perspective that a lot of fathers are extra per extra extra protective of their daughters due to the fact that they know most men think about 23 hours out of the day so because of that you know you can't really get mad at them because their you know protecting of the parents and for them to protect the sons is because they don't want the sons knocking up every woman that comes the hump in front of their house Lotta pregnant bellies flopping around I don't want that, so great video all in all you guys are wonderful

    Oh one other difference I noticed was talking to my parents just about guys I am attracted to. For example when I was I think 16 there was this guy I was writing letters to as a pen pal, later I found out he liked but I didn't think of him that way so I told him about this guy I liked and when he responded he gave me advice about the guy. Well normally I would read his letters out loud to my family so they could have an up date one him and how he was too g to, vut.tgis time I didn't read the whole thing because I left out the part about the guy I liked, well my dad noticed that it wasn't the whole letter and asked why I didn't read it, he thought that may be the boy had said something inappropriate to me and I didn't want to read it, but I ended up handing over the letter and he read the part, then my parents took me into their room for a talk. They were mad but not for the reason that you might think. They were mad that I hadn't felt comfortable telling them about the guy I liked, they were disappointed that i felt I needed to hide that part of the letter. So after that I always would tell them those things cause I didn't want to hurt them

    I'm in a Thai family. When I was younger, my mother would always be cautious of me hanging out with males, friend or not, and always said "make sure there's another female". I can understand why since we both have had bad experiences with males, but it got annoying after a while. I'm older now (still a teenager though) and I've had much more freedom with who I hang out with and who's house I can go to. Either she's okay with it or just very oblivious because I never hide the fact that I'm going to a male's house or hanging with one alone, so I'm always double checking like, "Hey I'm hanging out with *male name* today. I'm going to HIS HOUSE and we're playing video games in HIS ROOM. Then we're cooking in HIS kitchen. Okay mum???". I'm not one to lie to my mother lol
    I recently got into my first relationship and well she thinks I'm too young (which is true tbh) but she hasn't really tried to stop me. It took me a week to tell her I got into one because she didn't pick up my hints- so I had to be direct. Went better than I expected but I'm still a bit worried haha

    That's so interesting, my parents are also very strict but they also gave us the reasons etc., so I do understand their point of view. And we speak openly about it nowadays, but I realized that I had to open up the conversation and once I did the ice was broken and since then I can speak openly with them - even though I'm not even dating.
    I think because we are so open about it and talk a lot, I don't have the drive and desire to even date HAHA
    We are Filipinos and we hug each other, even in public, I also do with my siblings, it's totally normal to me :D

    • @NTDOffTheGreatWall
      @NTDOffTheGreatWall  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      yea once that initial barrier is broken everything seems to click in place. I love how much importance Filipinos seem to put on family and hugs are the BEST! Unfortunately a lot of my Chinese friends aren't comfortable with hugging my parents.

    • @davlorito
      @davlorito 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Off the Great Wall Like you said, communication is key. I have to remind myself sometimes that not everyone is a hugger...I even hug my sisters friends without thinking - so being so open and "HUGGING" can turn out to become an awkward encounter for them (I only realized after someone tells me haha)
      But is it really common among Chinese families to not show affection physically? Hugging, Kiss on the cheek etc.?
      When our parents come home all siblings have to come to the front door greet them through a kiss on the cheek or "Mano po" (taking the back of their hand to your forehead)

    • @NTDOffTheGreatWall
      @NTDOffTheGreatWall  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I can't speak for everyone but it seems that way for the majority of Chinese families I've seen. It's not that we don't love each other of course but I guess we don't do a great job expressing emotion. I think to be honest a lot of it also has to do with the cultural revolution it really scarred a lot of families. I've noticed for instance when I travel to Taiwan that Taiwanese people are a little more warmer, and the majority of them avoided that terrible time in Chinese history.

    • @davlorito
      @davlorito 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Off the Great Wall Of course, it's just a different way to express love. I think Filipinos are the way they are because of the Spanish influence, because we also have a huge Chinese background. Maybe you can do more Videos with Southeast Asians and speak about similarities and differences on various topics - would definitely watch! :)
      Have a great weekend :)

    My mom was always like '' Y'know, I'm telling you how everything goes, then you do it your way and face everything yourself " so I suppose this kinda gave me freedom, but at the same time made me not really want to do some things, mostly because I was scared. Dating wise ( as someone who's gay ) well she doesn't really care, like besides the sex talks that go like " ALWAYS USE CONDOMS, DON'T DO IT WITHOUT ONE " I guess it's pretty chill, but I'm still gonna hide my relationships from her >.> I feel like it's not her bussiness to know that

    My Asian parents are soo strict, they don't like small crush topics when I try to open up, soo ofc not the big things too. At first when I'm in high school they said I'm allowed when I turn 18, but I'm now 20 and they want me to graduate a degree in college first before any courting and dating stuff, but I kinda fell in love at 18 and being secretive to avoid fights, cause they may disown me just because of that bruh.. I've missed the fun teen stuff in movies, it's sad tbh.

    I am 15 now and I feel like having a girlfriend. However I have never had a crush until now. I feel Asian parents don’t allow their children to date until we are in our 20s. Then when we are older and have no interest in dating anymore, they want us to quickly get married. So many Chinese, including my family members, already in their mid 30s nearing 40s are still single. For western countries, teenagers as young as 13/14 can date and kiss in front of their parents and they support that

    from watching this videos other people that come from other countries have similar backgrounds! I started dating when I was almost 19 because the way my parents raised us! my little niece is 12 and most of her friends have been dating for almost 2 years but my sister won't let her date or put make-up on or wear tight clothes, which I agree on that! be a kid enjoy it, it only happens once. then you won't be able to sleep or have free time or do what you like!!

    My parents are Asian. I don't think they have ever limited me in dating. But how would I know? I never dated. Now, I am in my mid-20s and still single. I'd rather be single for the rest of my life. It keeps things simple. My mother grew up in China and lived in China until her 30s. During her 20s, she dated several men with the aim of finding a spouse. She had a full-time job as a doctor and lived with her parents, so there was likely no hanky-panky going on in any of the relationships, if you know what I mean. My father never dated anyone in his 20s or earlier. My mother was my father's first date. They met through a dating advertisement, and they stayed together ever since.

    I liked my parents approach. They were like they didn't like the idea of being in a serious relationship before you turn 18, they were ok with us likeing someone and bring them over to our house and hang out with my family. But we can have a serious relationship after we turn 18. And they don't stop us from dateing who we like, cause they raised us how to find a good person. My 3 older sisters are married to 3 amazing men. One of the questions when I call my parents is if I have anyone I like right now. Cause they know that's gonna happen even if they didn't want it to..... It sounds like I am bragging about my parents doesn't It? 😶 sorry, I will stop now

    I actually grew up in a conservative christian Russian home where dating is kinda seen as a sin. You either get married, or you keep every person of the opposite sex at arm's length #bibledistance.
    It's been really tough on me because I am 18 now and I want to date, but I don't want my family finding out and at the same time, I don't know how to properly have a relationship with a guy. I never wanted to have a teen relationship because I knew that shit wasn't serious, but we all want a bit of romance sometimes. Just feels like I'm missing out.

I liked this guy and we had a few dates but nothing too serious. But when i had my second date i asked my mom if i could meet him. It wasn't really a date. We hung up at his house and watched a few filmes. But my mom said no and talked with me about not being allowed to have a boyfriend because i should focus on my studies. Well ,i was a little rebellious and always went out with him without telling my mom. At the end it didn't work out between him and me but it was still my first experience with a boy and being rebellious the first time.

    I'm a 20 year old Chinese guy. My parents never really talked to me about dating and relationships really because I've never been in a relationship yet. They think that I'm just attracted to white women and not Chinese women (which isn't true, I like all women of different races). The thing is, I grew up i a predominantly white neighborhood so I've been more exposed to white girls instead of Asian girls. They're not really opposed to me dating outside my race just as long as I eventually marry a Chinese woman.

      i understand but i mean .... if you're going to date someone then you're in love with them and would want to spend the rest of your life with right ? so if it's a white girl that you're actually dating and want to marry her , you're not allowed to ? then why bother date a white girl in the first place ?

    • @chocothunda99
      @chocothunda99 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well that's my parent's logic for you. I guess they'd rather me gain experience in dating and relationships first. Plus I'm only 20 so it's not like I'm planning on getting married anytime soon.

      @khaoulachatt7703 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      well ! i'm 20 too and where i live age deosn't matter that much in marriage , but you're right it's good to gain experience in dating but it's bad dating girls you don't have real feelings for ... i'm not judging btw , just trying to understand the point here ! lastly , parents know best ...for real tho

    • @chocothunda99
      @chocothunda99 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well as much as I'd like to respect my parents wishes, I can’t help that I'm attracted to someone who's not my own race. Plus like I said, I grew up mostly around white people and white girls so that’s what I'm exposed to. I guess I'm just trying to say that it's hard for me to do what they want because of those factors.

    I tell them that I can literally meet any girl all around this world of 7+billion people you know. I don't want to limit myself to just one ethnicity or even more specifically the girls from families my parents know.
    To be honest though, if I do have to think about it, I don't think it's such a bad deal in itself. Other cultures can be so demanding/different. I wouldn't be surprised if I ended up marrying a girl like that.

    I think the ages of 13 to 27 or so are a period of ignorance. I think parents should talk to their kids openly and let them fail at certain things depending on their age and maturity level. Also what they've already been thru. But no parent is perfect. And GOOD parents do what they do purely out of love. So i appreciate everything my parents did; whether i think it was right or wrong when i think about it now

    Try “hiding” relationship from parents. So what I mean by “hiding” is they knew we hung out, but never knew how close we were. He is Asian American born in America, I was born in Asia. His parents are very Americanized and mine are very traditional. Well naturally my parents mentally attacked him. My dad is a city police officer so he really got on him!!! Anyway he asked me to marry him and we kept trying to introduce this to my parents... well growing up back and forth between japan and America I had no Asian friends till high school. I was always the outcast that no one understood and I got very depressed and my mental health use to be very bad until me and him were together. And I had enough at a certain point and well... instead of my parents accepting his marriage proposal other things happened and now we had to tell them I was pregnant with our first son! They were very happy it was a boy and actually took this better than the marriage thing. We have two sons and have been together for 4 years now. I hope to get married to him when I finish college. I am 19 he is 20, we had our babies very young! My parents looked at it as we were being selfish and disrespectful that we would do this without being married but they are now very happy, and so are we! It all works out! BUT I am still treated like child 😂

      Sam Eastern religions are not like your religions of the book, instead they are like values systems that are passed on from generation to generation over centuries.
