My mom is Thai and she always compared me to other children in a good way "You're so much prettier and slimmer than her" or "I heard ... is doing bad in school, I'm glad my daughter is doing so well". My grandmother always talked bad about my mom do my mom didn't want her daughter to feel as miserable as she did when growing up.

Here are few more thing about growing up with immigrant Asian parents:
    - They rarely or never use the dishwasher. They use it as a way to store and dry dishes. I have to wash dishes after every meal.
    - Allowances? Nope. Not in my childhood. Except Chinese New Year I got some cash in a red envelope.
    - Mooncakes during Lunar Festival around September
    - Karokes

I wonder how many westerners, like me, watch your videos to learn more about Asian culture. I have been lucky enough to have some great Asian friends, so I know how to properly enter a home, bring a hostess gift, share a meal, show proper respect, use my rice bowl and chopsticks properly, etc. However, I have learned even more watching your fun and informative videos. Thanks for the the information you share.

1 - Didn't have to go to Saturday/Sunday school because where I'm from it's mandatory for me to learn Chinese in school (we have a policy where you have to learn English and your mother tongue language)
2- I didn't get compared by my parents to other kids for two reasons. One: Didn't have anybody to compare me to. Two: My parents aren't the type to compare. Literally their motto for me and my brother academically is 'Just try your best and we'll be happy'. They're the most laid-back parents I have ever seen.
3 -This is the only one I agree FULLY with. We have tiger balm and vicks all over the house at all times.
    4 - We don't celebrate halloween where I'm from.
5- My mother doesn't cook and the canteen food here is actually pretty good.
    6 - No road trips.
    7 - No wrapping.
8 - My parents don't really bother checking my grades, as long as I pass, they're happy.
9 - My family does hoard plastic bags and oddly enough tissue paper.
10 - Free time in my house is my parents telling me and my brother to go outside and hang out with our friends.
11 - My family doesn't really care when I get sick since I usually recover very quickly. Only had the pleasure of drinking herbal medicine once.
So, as a Singaporean Chinese, none of this really relates to me. Try again next time lol :)

In our family, growing up as one of the youngest out of all of my cousins, I was made to welcome the elders in the family to the dinner table as a sign of respect. At the time it sucked to be the youngest kid because there were so many people, but in retrospect it later taught me to be a kind and respectful to our elders.

I definitely feel the "protected furniture" thing as a trait among "immigrant" families. My grandmother is from Puerto Rico (which is a commonwealth thus the "immigrant" thing) and for years she had her couch wrapped with a very heavy plastic case. Finally she took it off as she got older so she can enjoy it. It was the ugliest thing while wrapped but it really did keep that couch set in great condition! Its exactly as I remember it from over 20 years ago except less sticky on your skin! Sper cool to actually feel what it was meant to feel like as an adult. lol

Notes from a Texas Caucasian Kid:
Getting Sick==> Whenever we had a cold, mom would feed us Vick's Vaporub ... and we survived! :)
Halloween==> My Great Grand dad would hand out ice cubes.... in Dallas... in October... (eye roll with a smile)
PLastic on furniture- My great grand parents would keep the plastic on their new furniture. I guess that was because they came from poor farm families and lived in the depression.

After watching this video, I find that I've gone through my children in a very "non-Asian" way. First of all, I was born and raised in CHINA. I was mainly brought up by my mom because my parents got divorced when I was 5. My mom never compared me with other kids and she was never mad at me when I got home with a failing grade(It happened sometimes). Once I got 101 out of 150 on Math, the lowest in my class was 99, I was so depressed and upset. When I told her, she told me to treat the test out of 100 so that I was 1 point more than the perfect score :D. She does not like wrapping our furniture AT ALL because she says the point to get nice things is to enjoy them not protect them. Now I think about it, I wonder where my mom is actually from....

My grandma was more of the stereotypical "Asian parent" because my parents were more lenient. I never had the "Asian grading system" with my parents but with my grandma. I related to most of the stuff though, especially the herbal medicine and ointment.

I didn't do that either. Weekends were for extra-curricular activities like joining uniform groups - Red Cross, scouts, bands, musical/drama groups. Half-day schools since schools had 2 sessions, the morning sessions and the afternoon session so by noon those morning session students would have to give way to afternoon sessions (double capacity of students intake). Didn't know of parents comparing results but my academic results were always good without studying for them. Many of the bright students were that way and I was always in best class/best schools. However, I helped a lot in doing households like cleaning house, washed dishes and even simple cooking and others like collecting illegal lotteries, etc since we were very poor then. So, I really fumbled and stumbled my way through education in the sense that I never worked for it but able to graduate from the university and in those days, 3% of the population could get into local university (only 1 in Singapore - NUS). Those who could not qualify for local U usually performed very well in (overseas) universities in US, Australia and UK.

I am not Asian, but as a Jewish and as Latino person I can totally relate to a couple of those....for example weekend school was for learning Hebrew, are holiday that we hated was Christmas, the hoarding HUGE! so you know stuff like that! The medicine, every time I was sick my mother would give me this weird tasting medicine in a bottle and force me to sallow it! we didn't wrap in anything in plastic, but my dad would only buy used things because he came from a poor family! and my mother would only make thing because she was from Colombia!

my dad, would always joke about going out to Asian Restuants around that time, but sadly in my home town everything was closed including all the Asian stores so I never had that, but going to a Chinese Restauant on Christmas is a joke in the Jewish Community and I remember even the surpreme count justice said that during her congress interview when a senator ask what your doing for Christmas...you should really do about Jews and Chinese I would love to watch people don't actually realize how much we have in common! I perosnally love that joke!

    • @tashikoweinstein435
