There is no better way to learn your property than by living on and working the land. The small projects you're accomplishing over the winter will pay dividends for your spring/summer plans. That really is a million dollar view and I bet the stars on a clear night are mesmerizing.

Enjoying your energy. You seem to have accomplished a lot this winter. I also like that you show us the scenery while you are pointing to the areas you are talking about. We really get to see where you are. So many others will show a view but they are still in the middle of it blocking the view! Will they ever learn?

One thing for sure is, you'll never have to join a gym! You get more exercise in an hour than any of us spending a few hours in a gym!! I absolutely love the creek. I love the 'song' listening to it travel. So relaxing. Stay safe, give Dobby a hug from all of us and never forget you are remarkable, inspiring, and a wonderful dad to Dobby.

Straw bales make outstanding insulation under the house. When kept dry, they basically last forever! They're lightweight too, if you have a proper all terrain cart or sled. Once placed under the house you can add salvaged metal roofing to finish the breezeway and protect the straw from wind, snow and rain.
Always great to hear the enthusiasm in your voice Tyler. You've got this!

Keep the garden beds close to the house and put a deer fence around them. Once the deer discover your veggies, all will be there’s. We have 2 acres behind deer fence to save the garden and small fruit and young fruit trees, 100 trees under 5 years old, and the fence has made all the difference.

  • @samsmom1491

A cheap alternative for fencing around the garden is a woven willow or other type of flexible wood branches. It worked for early colonists.

If you want the snow to melt faster just take your shovel and chop slices into the snow layer. If you just wait for it to melt the top layer forms a crust of protection which blocks the sunlight/rain from reaching the more vulnerable lower layers. Slicing down into the snow allows rain and sunlight to penetrate down to the lower layers and melt it faster. My parents taught me that one, it's how they got the snow banks to melt faster around their property when I was growing up. Great to see you back making videos again. ~Kevin

On your next food run, buy beans, any kind you like and any other fruit or vegetable that you like, and keep the seeds, and try to get them growing in your garden. I use the word try, because gardening looks so easy, but it turns out to be much harder than it looks.
It helps to start seed beds indoors, about 3 to 4 weeks before you can transplant outdoors. It looks like you are a garden 5 or 6 Zone area. Stay warm, stay safe, take care of Dobby, I can't wait to see what you plant in your garden in the Spring. I had real good luck with butternut squash, about 60 seeds yielded me about 60 pounds of squash the first year I planted it, and it keeps without refrigeration. Thank you for sharing, have a good week!

Totally agree. Also, don’t try too much too quickly. Gardening is a lot of work, especially when you first start. Plant a small to medium area and work it first. Hugelkulture is a neat way to garden in new areas when you have lots of sticks and brush.

OMW well done on all the log hauling, wood chopping .. certainly keeps you fit. Having a wash in the creek is amazing, so good for your body. That creek is a life saver.
The old stove, as your garden is going to be near it, what about turning it into an outdoor kitchen/cooker, just a thought.
    You’re doing a great job. 👏 😊

Lovely to see you both again. With your washing line sagging under the weight of the garments, take one of your thinner wooden poles (2-3 metres) and put a notch in the top then put it under the middle of the line and use it to lift the line. You can leave it lifting the line so your clothes get more air and they dry quicker.

Another awesome video. I love how much you are learning about your land through exploring & all your small contemplation / rest spots.
With the muddy areas, just wanted to suggest looking into native ground-cover & trees that you could plant / relocate from other areas of your property to help. They can act like nature’s sponges to take up excess water from the ground.

COME ALONG CABLE WINCH; If you're able to aquire a good sturdy one, try not to hook back to your cable, any wires on your cable that get bent, will significantly weaken the cable, try to use chains or tow straps to go around your trees, or whatever you're hooking to, you'll find a good quality "come along" will become a very veritable tool on the homestead

The broken power unit if the battery is still good you could take it apart and salvage the battery and hook it into the smaller unit this would give you a longer usage as the battery would increase run time! dig into you good unit and find the positive terminal and negative terminal and run wires out of your good unit and just hook up positive to positive and negative to negative. I would go on line and get a connecter terminal so you can separate the battery from the old unit to the working unit! When you charge your little unit when connected it will charge the extra battery!

      Appreciate it 🙏❤️

Grew up in Winnipeg but we’ve certainly changed our allegiance…guess we would cheer for the Jets IF the Canucks were eliminated in the playoffs 😬! So much snow on Cape Breton Island this winter…hard for you to navigate!

Life is back to normal, you are back! Fooling around with TH-cam tonight and I saw your title. I thought no way, click and there you were. Nice to see the cabin with Dobby keeping warm on his chair or is that your chair? I don't blame him wanting to be wrapped up being warm. I do the same for my dog Molly. I have Blueberry bushes in my yard. I have not had a blueberry since I planted them 6+ years ago. The birds and squirrels get them before me. I have 5 plants and I should put in 5 more if I want a pie. It takes a lot of plants to make one pie. If you fence in your garden plan on 12 ft fencing because of the deer.

If that stove is cast iron take a grinding wheel to it. Clean it up n make an outside kitchen so you don't heat your house up in the summertime. You could build a shelter over top for shade/rain proof area too.

Great video. Really enjoyed it. Comments about the garden: the layout will really depend upon the site, what you want to grow and the orientation to the sun. Research the difference between an east-west orientation and a north-south orientation. Pluses and minuses to both. You need to know how the sun tracks over the site so you don’t cast shade on sun- loving plants with taller plants. Start with a manageable size this year, and plan the layout with room for expansion. Design the beds so you can reach into them from all four sides without straining your back. Also, plan an area for compost piles or bins because you have a lot of organic matter on site that you can put to good use in a garden. Pay attention to the prevailing wind patterns on the site. You may want to site it so the nearby trees act as a windbreak.
One of your biggest concerns in designing the garden will be keeping out the wildlife, especially the deer since they are attracted to the apple trees. That’s why I wouldn’t site the garden with the apple tree in the center. An open invitation. You may want to consider either an 8 foot deer fence around the garden or placing the beds inside a screen-link fenced chicken coop. You can order kits. Just one deer will wipe out a garden in one night.
I suggest poking around Facebook for local gardening groups, small farm and homestead groups. You can probably ask questions and get answers specific to your area. Also check to see if the province has any kind of department or office for agricultural services. They could be a source of information for gardening, controlling wildlife, pests, harvesting, and homestead products.
What an exciting adventure you are on!

Your root cellar should be on the north side of your property and kept out of the sun as much as possible , as you have found you need to build a large woodshed for storing your firewood and keeping it dry , you should look at building a ram pump for running water for the cabin and using to water your gardens , just google ram pumps , no power required to run , I have build many different designs myself , keep on keeping on !

Having your garden on the high ground next to the cabin is a good idea. I don't know your specific climate, but in northern areas air drainage is important to have the longest possible growing season between frosts. Low areas collect cold air on clear nights and can have a local frost that will damage certain frost sensitive vegetable plants like tomatoes and squash.😚🍅🥒

Living one full year on your property and learning the lay of the land is so important, it is like getting to know the foundation of your future, what can, what cannot, where to do this, do that.
You are on the right way!
I'm so happy to see you are planning and make this your own!
You boys, hang in there! 😃👊
