As a mtg player that has about 5 of these types of videos under my belt, it's the speed that I forget. 6 turns makes some of these cards unplayable. 3 turns they are broken
I like how he honed in on the main issue with TCG text vs OCG text. Not having numbered effects sure makes the initial reading of effects bleed into each other.

When Crim was talking about Cannon Soldier my first thought was "what if your Blood Artist was also your aristocrat." Which would be super busted in magic.
This one was especially great because the guest actually had some experience in Yu-Gi-Oh! He had some point of comparison so the surprises were even bigger.
This was a fun video but I did want to comment on one thing that was missed when discussing Ancient Fairy Dragon, which is the card wasn't errata'd when it was banned. You could use multiple copies of it in one turn and that's ultimately what decks were building themselves to do ("Field Spell Turbo" as I recall it) and that ultimately is why the card got banned. It's still quite strong even with the errata and it will always have a home in Yugioh as a result but it is one of those cards that got a power level errata.
Crim is probably the Magic player with the most experience I've seen for these kinds of videos; he's dipped in and out of a few formats throughout the years I'm happy to see fewer cards with long text this time. As funny as it is to see non-yugioh players react to long text for the millionth time, I think these kinds of videos should be a test to see how one's knowledge of one card game translates to another one. It might also be a good idea to go over the basic mechanics of the game before the quiz starts so that the contestants can see the difference in the two games (e.g. Attacking monsters by default vs attacking the other player, no mulligan, no mana, effects are spell speed 1/sorcery speed by default unless otherwise stated, quick-plays/traps being spell speed 2/instant speed, normal summon/tribute summon rules, etc.) I think some good cards for magic players to evaluate are non-archetypal cards. Consistency cards like Pot of Prosperity, disruption like Infinite Impermanence, board breakers like Raigeki, etc. It's hard to evaluate archetypal cards without context, especially boss monsters. Boss monsters are really only as good as how easy it is to summon them, and anything that leads up to the boss monster is only as good as the monsters they can summon.
I agree, which is why you don’t see many archetype cards in any of my videos. I don’t show Raigeki and Dark Hole because they’re too easy, but I overall agree with everything you said here.
I agree with buddy here. Coming back to yugioh from Six Samurai era to master duel I’ve come to realize the only reason monsters still has levels is because of the extra deck.
I wish you mentioned for linear equation cannon that being shuffled back into the deck is the most powerful form of removal in the game. It's not a narrow card, it's a genuinely good payoff that is very generic (and good for self-mill decks), just the conditions for resolving it are way too rare, so it's a dead card 99% of the time.
also you would like never know it if its actually live unless you do the math every second. also isnt the math done at the resolve? so the opponent can influence a lot of stuff by chaining to it aswell.
@@mauer1 In master duel, it will only let you activate it if you can resolve it, so it's actually not difficult to use. That's when you learn that linear equation cannon's real downside is being battle phase only. It's basically drowning mirror force that you have to do math.
the best removal in my experience is banishing face down. all the other removal effects have severe downsides. too much stuff is immune to destruction or triggers when destroyed. kaijuing something means it still hits the GY, which can have all sorts of negative consequences (and you're handing your opponent a pretty sizeable beatstick too) bouncing back to the hand or the deck is awful because it sends extra deck monsters back to the extra deck, meaning your opponent just gets to trigger their etb effects again next turn. if anything beats banishing face down it'd be just negating a card before it even hits the field and even then those cards still hit the GY in most cases.
Sometimes dated/limited Yugioh experience can almost be a disadvantage in one of these. He was totally had by his childhood hatred of Cannon Soldier! xP
weird that he didn't compare Cannon Soldier to Catapult Turtle as both have similar effect and Catapult Turtle saw huge success because of its FTK burn potential
So what pretty much kills linear equation cannon besides it being a trap is that if your graveyard is empty or just a few cards then there is no number you can declare that will lead to anything meaningful if the opponent has at least a lv4 monster on the field. So in many situations you cannot even declare 1 as 1x4+1 requires you to have 5 cards in grave to not get burned for 500 and even if you fulfill it you just shuffle back 1 thing. Once the board gets larger and the monster goes higher in level it gets even harder to declare a valid number. Here is also the main flaw, you can almost never declare a number higher than 1 and still be correct.
The fact that so many people find Linear Equation Cannon so complicated is a damning indictment of modern education systems. You just multiply two one-digit numbers and then add another one-digit number. You then compare that number to the size of your graveyard. If it matches, do one thing; if it doesn't, do another.

I'm teaching an old friend and played a game against them using my for fun Utopia deck after their first day learning and they started yelling at me over the phone about how they've never experienced something so sweaty and how I need to 1v1 them on other games now lmao. I dropped dragonar, the monster negate galaxy lord on my turn, hope harbinger on their turn, they managed to bait harbinger negate before raigeki, they set 1 and pass, and I dropped ultimate ray, and f0 on my next turn 💀 "meta blah blah sweaty ass fuckin 1v1 me smash bros heckin meta abuser blah"

Getting back into yugioh myself has been a wild ride and I always love these types of videos and seeing if I can get the questions right too. I’d love to see someone rate a purrely card like Noir, that might be too easy but not knowing the cards the deck is built around could make it tricky.
I stand behind teaching two cedh players basic game mechanics and having them play a tear mirror. Or just forcing mtg pros to watch _that_ tear mirror. That would be funny too.

And the best idea to go along with that is to show them a replay of 1 of yugioh longest combos. U know, like 1 that takes a few hours irl, but it’s a sped up online replay. Something like a classic dark synchro combo. Or infernity combo.
MTG players seeing Tear would just have flashbacks to Dredge or, more recently, Hoggak. And much like yugioh players, it will be a love it or hate it response.

Basically yeah. Yugioh is a game that is designed to be over the top, and archetypes are designed partly to be good - but the other part is for role playability. So basically every archetype is trying to have a unique playstyle & gameplan. There's like 400 archetypes out there, and more being added every set, so they get reeeaaally creative with playing with different mechanics and doing something weird or out of the norm with them.
Crim saying that Volcano Dragon was bad because of skill drain is some Peak Eldlich Brainrot Not that they're wrong, but it doesn't change the fact that, that of alk things was their reasoning.
In theory Anti-Magic Arrows would have had a niche use like 10 years ago, but today It just doesn't make any sense. Back when Mirror-Force and it's family of cards were still a thing, this could have been useful. It would have allowed beat-down decks to last just a little bit longer. But these days there are so many better cards and it doesn't do anything against monster effects.

Funnily enough, Anti-Magic Arrows counters the turn 2 End of Main Phase 1 End of Battle Phase Activate Evenly Matched not saying it's a good idea, but it's funny.
Linear Equation Cannon is very easy to understand. It starts with "During the Battle Phase" (and can't be activated from your hand) so you now this card is trash and would be destroyed before even getting the chance to get activated.
Magic player here that the YT algorithm dictated I had to see this bc Crim was in it... great vid, 7:29 when Crim dares to make a joke about Yugioh not obeying its own rules I felt that was a bit pot and kettle. The first thing I have to teach magic players is "unless a card says otherwise", bc we don't have rules we have fancy suggestions.

Anti-magic Arrows had 2 formats where it was good if I recall correctly. Maybe one around 2018 and one around 2021 but I'm not sure. It's an extremely strong card at what it does on paper, it's just in most mathcups it won't actually work. But when it's good, it's amazing.
I've never seen LEC before but my understanding from reading it is that it's basically Evenly Matched but you have to do some math and already have a graveyard. Which isn't terrible? Since you can choose the starting number there's probably more situations you could pop this than you would think. But at the very least you're gonna need like... 10 cards in your grave. And 99% of the time it's going to be completely overkill because you're gonna pop it with like 15 cards in your grave when your opponent has like 6 cards on the field.
I hope they release Differential Equation Railgun to power creep Linear Equation cannon. What you do is you choose a monster on the field, then count the number of cards in your opponents graveyard, then you solve the system of differential equations that is the sum of the derivatives of y up to the number of cards in your opponents GY = 0 under the condition y(0)=ATK where ATK is the ATK of the chosen monsters and if you can find a non-trivial (so y=ATK doesn't count) solution you get to shuffle all cards in your opponent's hand, field and GY into the deck.
The Canon Soldier burn deck was only good because of Firewall Dragon cause of the non-once per turn condition it use to have. Only then was it really ever used and I'd just attribute it's success to Firewall. You can still do it in Morphtronics but that's a little more difficult but the you'd run Toon Cannon Solider because of Toon Table of Contents to search it out.
Linear Equation cannon probably would be pretty powerful and people would actually do the math if it wasn't a battle trap. It being a battle trap makes it a worse and more situational drowning mirror force
Burning Dragon's discarding 1 spell card might be handy. Although aside from Dragonmaids, I'm not sure where to start. Why Dragonmaids? They got a spell card that if sent to the GY, then it make all dragonmaids untargetable by effects. There's also their fusion card which can be retrieved in exchange of sending one of your dragonmaids back to your hand. The real issue in all of this is that the well is bound to run dry sooner or later, OR you get bricked. Like Polymorization, monster reborn, pot of Avarice and Nurse Dragonmaid and Red Eyes Dark Metal Dragon(?) while going first. Where in which case you can either hope the enemy also bricked and/or surrender immediately.
As a Yugioh Boomer who hasnt played much since Yata-Lock, and primarily plays commander as an arch-enemy (and also Dimir player) today, I have never identified with Crim more...
Dafuq I saw burning dragon for the first time and think it is actually pretty good in something like cipher dragons you get a free lvl 8 monster plus it destroys back row for a spell and isn't harpyies feather duster at 1
I don't even feel like the linear equation cannon math is that hard. You count (your GY - their board). If count is a nice number (multiple of a common lvl like 4) then you think "can bonk on 'em." if it's not a nice number you think about if there's a combo where you can change the count. Just seems like it makes it even more situational on top of being more counterable
I know this sounds weird, but I think Burning Dragon could be a 1 off tech card now that Promethean Princess has been released. It makes Burning Dragon an easy recurring card you can just bring out as part of your combo for security?
While that’s true, all of the spells you’d discard for the effect would be too good of spells to discard. Things like Thrust, Talent, Feather Duster, etc are just too good and do better things than Burning Dragon would

Every single time I see people bring up Linear Equation Cannon, I'm astounded at the amount of people that don't realize its JUST ALGEBRA; It's literally just y=mx+b!
As a guy who doesn't play Yugioh much... 1. Linear Equation Cannon sounds absolutely terrible. There's way too much chance going into it. Pretty sure it'd backfire more than it would work. 2. Burning Dragon sounds neat enough, Heavy Storms on summon. 2500 attack on top of that is good. I'd use it if I could fit it in and had nothing else. 3. Cannon Soldier is okay. Not even bad. There's definitely ways to loop it's effect. It's still good. 4. Anti-Magic Arrows is a one-turn Quick-Play Cold Wave. I'd try it out at the very least and if I liked it, I'd keep it. 5. Ancient Fairy Dragon is neato. I know it became busted... and don't remember why at the timing of making this comment. I know I would have used it if I had no more extra deck space and could somehow justify it, though. Edit: And now I get why Ancient Fairy Dragon is crazy. Promotes so much setup!
Burning dragon isn't bad. It's okay. If anything, it's a free special summon that can convert a spell card into a Harvey's feather duster if you don't need it. The only downside to this card is you can't use it on your first turn.
14:15 it gets better, not all formats banned cannon soldier because : 1: it doesnt matter if you ban the OG because toon cannon soldier is a thing and due ot being a "toon" card is searchable with the toon support namely " table of contents one of the few not OPT search spells that can search other copies it itself. 2: Both variants of Cannon soldier an most main deck cards like it act as a " canary " in the mine where if there is ever an abusive tribute engine popping inot the meta that makes the FTK consistent and viable, its the sign that said tribute engine is overtuned and probably has to be hit in some capacity. for instance the original FTK was a problem because of magical scientis and eventually the Frog engine.
much like its spell counter part " mass driver" it ended with your opponent being covered in sticky frog residue if they could not stop the FTK from going off.@@TheOneJameYT
You say Cannon Soldier is fine today, but I heavily disagree. Around 2014/2018(whenever Unerrata'ed Firewall was legal), we had Danger Dark World/Goiki Danger Dark World(I forget which) running around, and they were perfectly capable of just playing normally without having to FTK woth cannon soldier(they'd just rip cards out of your hand instead). Every time such a deck is available, and they don't have to have another FTK as a wincon, Cannon Soldier _will_ turn up. Reminder about what happened to Pendulum Magicians and Starving Venom Fusion Dragon Zarc. All of this was before Nibiru, but these days, outside of Master Duel, Nibiru rarely turns up because people figure out how to make their combos under five summons, or just summon a negate under five summons and keep going. The current environment is also very hostile to running Nibiru, because it's a very dead card if you draw into it, and it probably won't come up on turn 3 if you somehow get there. Basically, Cannon Soldier should _really_ get banned, because every time it's turned up, it's never been healthy for the game.
having some YGO knowledge up to the beginning of Links, I think there's a good general rule for deciding if a card is good or not. 1) Is it chainable? Like, can you see this card chaining into getting you multiple +1s (adding cards to hand, adding cards to GY, special summoning monsters)? 2) Is it usable during your opponent's turn without too many restrictions? Like, can you activate it from anything your opponent tries to do? And can you activate it before removal effects are used on it? 3) Does it give you value for LP? It doesn't matter how much LP it costs, can it give you +1s, removal, lockdown for LP? 4) Can it disrupt? Can you use this card to majorly disrupt your opponent's intended cycling, chaining, and special summons without being negated, pre-removed, or otherwise ignored? If the answer to any of these questions is yes, a good 85% of the time, it'll range between decent to broken. The 15% is where the meta has a designated counter that you don't know about and the range between decent to broken depends on how good the archetype is that it supports.

Something I'm interested in though, and I don't know exactly how to find information on it, is, when the text says "Tribute" does it assume your side of the field, or does it have to say "Tribute x monsters you control", or if it can tribute opponent monsters would it say "tribute x monsters from either side of the field"? I've seen cards that go either way with this, where they specifically mention "from your side of the field" or "you control", and cards that specifically mention "either player controls" or "from either side of the field", but then there's Amazoness, Cannon Soldier and Nibiru which just say "tribute x monsters"

That deck box is making the very down bad part of me and the very Christian part of me battle internally.... while also somehow fueling each other. I'm surprised seeing it though, one of the reasons I'm less into Magic is I've heard the players in general can be very prudish, stuck up, and basically anti-fun. This was a fun one. I think this is a rare case of somebody actually doing worse because they've played the game and have game knowlege. It's funny too since Canon Soldier was part of the first ever tournament winning deck right from day one and saw dominance for years. In fairness tough, those of us playing on the playground sure didn't know that, let alone how to break it. I wonder how he'd react to the Jinzo archetype?... actually, no I don't, those are some of the worst designed cards ever printed, they'd probably ruin the card for the poor guy. I do not want to be the underpaid underfed intern at Konami who will inevitably need to design cards to force all that Jinzo bloat to be good or at least usable in 5 years (the people who design Hero cards must be on constant suicide watch).

I wouldn't say Linear Equation Cannon being bad is the reason it's not being played, it's nearly impossible to resolve in a non-automated duel and would likely result in DQs for people not being able to resolve it properly and would likely be banned if people actually used it.
It's great that even the Yugioh player has no idea what is good (showing the pretty average Ancient Fairy dragon and saying it's good/was banned because of the unerrata'd version, leaving out that ever happened).
tell you what, we can unban all the old hand ripping cards like Duo, Confi, etc. but, we have to put all the Ishizu Tearlament cards to 3 as well. Yep, not every attempt to hand rip is just letting your opponent get full Tears off.
@@TheOneJameYT would it really? To me it just looks like the ultimate conclusion of Yugioh as a game. Confiscation, Delin Duo, Sentry, and Appointer of the Red Lotus all at 3. But Tear gets Agido, Mudora, Kelbek, Keldo, Havnis, Merrli, Scheiren, and Kitkallos back to 3 each. that totals 12 hand rip spells/traps, 9 of which are live turn 1, and you can search them all with TTThrust, along with TTTalents being live because your opponent activated during your turn 1 Main Phase. Also you have the Ken/Gen engine to forcefully put a monster on their field if they do not commit. and you can run your own Millers and Runick cards to mill out the Tear deck.
If only if it didnt remove the entirety of the field spells and traps it would've been so insane for fire kings and would've seen so much upcoming play. Also it being a level 8 blends in super well. Damn you Konami. @@TheOneJameYT
I remember playing Ancient Fairy Dragon and Zombies, to get Zombie World, And do a lot of graveyard loopings... I mean Ancient Fairy Dragon, Stardust Dragon, heck I even had Red Nova and Quasar at one point in my Zombie deck. Oh and of course fun cards like Level Eater. It was just smack every possible engine into one deck and flood the board with fucked up good cards, be them synchros or XYZ, and then after a few years I quit playing after they banned my favourite card, albeit not a card in my Zombie deck, but I was a Qliphort player... I mean why would they ban Scout, Towers was the evil card.

I wish you mentioned for linear equation cannon that being shuffled back into the deck is the most powerful form of removal in the game. It's not a narrow card, it's a genuinely good payoff that is very generic (and good for self-mill decks), just the conditions for resolving it are way too rare, so it's a dead card 99% of the time.

@@mauer1 In master duel, it will only let you activate it if you can resolve it, so it's actually not difficult to use. That's when you learn that linear equation cannon's real downside is being battle phase only. It's basically drowning mirror force that you have to do math.

the best removal in my experience is banishing face down.
all the other removal effects have severe downsides.
too much stuff is immune to destruction or triggers when destroyed.
kaijuing something means it still hits the GY, which can have all sorts of negative consequences (and you're handing your opponent a pretty sizeable beatstick too)
bouncing back to the hand or the deck is awful because it sends extra deck monsters back to the extra deck, meaning your opponent just gets to trigger their etb effects again next turn.
if anything beats banishing face down it'd be just negating a card before it even hits the field and even then those cards still hit the GY in most cases.
Sometimes dated/limited Yugioh experience can almost be a disadvantage in one of these. He was totally had by his childhood hatred of Cannon Soldier! xP

So what pretty much kills linear equation cannon besides it being a trap is that if your graveyard is empty or just a few cards then there is no number you can declare that will lead to anything meaningful if the opponent has at least a lv4 monster on the field. So in many situations you cannot even declare 1 as 1x4+1 requires you to have 5 cards in grave to not get burned for 500 and even if you fulfill it you just shuffle back 1 thing.
Once the board gets larger and the monster goes higher in level it gets even harder to declare a valid number.
Here is also the main flaw, you can almost never declare a number higher than 1 and still be correct.

The fact that so many people find Linear Equation Cannon so complicated is a damning indictment of modern education systems.
You just multiply two one-digit numbers and then add another one-digit number. You then compare that number to the size of your graveyard.
If it matches, do one thing; if it doesn't, do another.

Getting back into yugioh myself has been a wild ride and I always love these types of videos and seeing if I can get the questions right too. I’d love to see someone rate a purrely card like Noir, that might be too easy but not knowing the cards the deck is built around could make it tricky.

Basically yeah. Yugioh is a game that is designed to be over the top, and archetypes are designed partly to be good - but the other part is for role playability.
So basically every archetype is trying to have a unique playstyle & gameplan. There's like 400 archetypes out there, and more being added every set, so they get reeeaaally creative with playing with different mechanics and doing something weird or out of the norm with them.

In theory Anti-Magic Arrows would have had a niche use like 10 years ago, but today It just doesn't make any sense.
Back when Mirror-Force and it's family of cards were still a thing, this could have been useful. It would have allowed beat-down decks to last just a little bit longer. But these days there are so many better cards and it doesn't do anything against monster effects.

Linear Equation Cannon is very easy to understand. It starts with "During the Battle Phase" (and can't be activated from your hand) so you now this card is trash and would be destroyed before even getting the chance to get activated.

Anti-magic Arrows had 2 formats where it was good if I recall correctly. Maybe one around 2018 and one around 2021 but I'm not sure. It's an extremely strong card at what it does on paper, it's just in most mathcups it won't actually work. But when it's good, it's amazing.

I've never seen LEC before but my understanding from reading it is that it's basically Evenly Matched but you have to do some math and already have a graveyard.
Which isn't terrible? Since you can choose the starting number there's probably more situations you could pop this than you would think. But at the very least you're gonna need like... 10 cards in your grave. And 99% of the time it's going to be completely overkill because you're gonna pop it with like 15 cards in your grave when your opponent has like 6 cards on the field.

What you do is you choose a monster on the field, then count the number of cards in your opponents graveyard, then you solve the system of differential equations that is the sum of the derivatives of y up to the number of cards in your opponents GY = 0 under the condition y(0)=ATK where ATK is the ATK of the chosen monsters and if you can find a non-trivial (so y=ATK doesn't count) solution you get to shuffle all cards in your opponent's hand, field and GY into the deck.

The Canon Soldier burn deck was only good because of Firewall Dragon cause of the non-once per turn condition it use to have. Only then was it really ever used and I'd just attribute it's success to Firewall.
You can still do it in Morphtronics but that's a little more difficult but the you'd run Toon Cannon Solider because of Toon Table of Contents to search it out.
Linear Equation cannon probably would be pretty powerful and people would actually do the math if it wasn't a battle trap. It being a battle trap makes it a worse and more situational drowning mirror force
The fun part of having only been into comp around 2010 and knowing nothing pass 5Ds era stuff means I'm often just as lost as the magic players lol

Burning Dragon's discarding 1 spell card might be handy. Although aside from Dragonmaids, I'm not sure where to start. Why Dragonmaids? They got a spell card that if sent to the GY, then it make all dragonmaids untargetable by effects. There's also their fusion card which can be retrieved in exchange of sending one of your dragonmaids back to your hand.
The real issue in all of this is that the well is bound to run dry sooner or later, OR you get bricked. Like Polymorization, monster reborn, pot of Avarice and Nurse Dragonmaid and Red Eyes Dark Metal Dragon(?) while going first. Where in which case you can either hope the enemy also bricked and/or surrender immediately.
As a Yugioh Boomer who hasnt played much since Yata-Lock, and primarily plays commander as an arch-enemy (and also Dimir player) today, I have never identified with Crim more...

I don't even feel like the linear equation cannon math is that hard. You count (your GY - their board). If count is a nice number (multiple of a common lvl like 4) then you think "can bonk on 'em." if it's not a nice number you think about if there's a combo where you can change the count. Just seems like it makes it even more situational on top of being more counterable

I know this sounds weird, but I think Burning Dragon could be a 1 off tech card now that Promethean Princess has been released. It makes Burning Dragon an easy recurring card you can just bring out as part of your combo for security?
While that’s true, all of the spells you’d discard for the effect would be too good of spells to discard. Things like Thrust, Talent, Feather Duster, etc are just too good and do better things than Burning Dragon would

As a guy who doesn't play Yugioh much...
1. Linear Equation Cannon sounds absolutely terrible. There's way too much chance going into it. Pretty sure it'd backfire more than it would work.
2. Burning Dragon sounds neat enough, Heavy Storms on summon. 2500 attack on top of that is good. I'd use it if I could fit it in and had nothing else.
3. Cannon Soldier is okay. Not even bad. There's definitely ways to loop it's effect. It's still good.
4. Anti-Magic Arrows is a one-turn Quick-Play Cold Wave. I'd try it out at the very least and if I liked it, I'd keep it.
5. Ancient Fairy Dragon is neato. I know it became busted... and don't remember why at the timing of making this comment. I know I would have used it if I had no more extra deck space and could somehow justify it, though.
Edit: And now I get why Ancient Fairy Dragon is crazy. Promotes so much setup!

Burning dragon isn't bad. It's okay. If anything, it's a free special summon that can convert a spell card into a Harvey's feather duster if you don't need it. The only downside to this card is you can't use it on your first turn.

In an Unban Yugioh Tournament, I'm taking Exodia all day.
14:15 it gets better, not all formats banned cannon soldier because :
1: it doesnt matter if you ban the OG because toon cannon soldier is a thing and due ot being a "toon" card is searchable with the toon support namely " table of contents one of the few not OPT search spells that can search other copies it itself.
2: Both variants of Cannon soldier an most main deck cards like it act as a " canary " in the mine where if there is ever an abusive tribute engine popping inot the meta that makes the FTK consistent and viable, its the sign that said tribute engine is overtuned and probably has to be hit in some capacity. for instance the original FTK was a problem because of magical scientis and eventually the Frog engine.

You say Cannon Soldier is fine today, but I heavily disagree. Around 2014/2018(whenever Unerrata'ed Firewall was legal), we had Danger Dark World/Goiki Danger Dark World(I forget which) running around, and they were perfectly capable of just playing normally without having to FTK woth cannon soldier(they'd just rip cards out of your hand instead).
Every time such a deck is available, and they don't have to have another FTK as a wincon, Cannon Soldier _will_ turn up. Reminder about what happened to Pendulum Magicians and Starving Venom Fusion Dragon Zarc.
All of this was before Nibiru, but these days, outside of Master Duel, Nibiru rarely turns up because people figure out how to make their combos under five summons, or just summon a negate under five summons and keep going. The current environment is also very hostile to running Nibiru, because it's a very dead card if you draw into it, and it probably won't come up on turn 3 if you somehow get there.
Basically, Cannon Soldier should _really_ get banned, because every time it's turned up, it's never been healthy for the game.
After seeing cannon soldier I am catapult turtling Rah on principle.

having some YGO knowledge up to the beginning of Links, I think there's a good general rule for deciding if a card is good or not.
1) Is it chainable? Like, can you see this card chaining into getting you multiple +1s (adding cards to hand, adding cards to GY, special summoning monsters)?
2) Is it usable during your opponent's turn without too many restrictions? Like, can you activate it from anything your opponent tries to do? And can you activate it before removal effects are used on it?
3) Does it give you value for LP? It doesn't matter how much LP it costs, can it give you +1s, removal, lockdown for LP?
4) Can it disrupt? Can you use this card to majorly disrupt your opponent's intended cycling, chaining, and special summons without being negated, pre-removed, or otherwise ignored?
If the answer to any of these questions is yes, a good 85% of the time, it'll range between decent to broken. The 15% is where the meta has a designated counter that you don't know about and the range between decent to broken depends on how good the archetype is that it supports.

Something I'm interested in though, and I don't know exactly how to find information on it, is, when the text says "Tribute" does it assume your side of the field, or does it have to say "Tribute x monsters you control", or if it can tribute opponent monsters would it say "tribute x monsters from either side of the field"?
I've seen cards that go either way with this, where they specifically mention "from your side of the field" or "you control", and cards that specifically mention "either player controls" or "from either side of the field", but then there's Amazoness, Cannon Soldier and Nibiru which just say "tribute x monsters"

That deck box is making the very down bad part of me and the very Christian part of me battle internally.... while also somehow fueling each other. I'm surprised seeing it though, one of the reasons I'm less into Magic is I've heard the players in general can be very prudish, stuck up, and basically anti-fun.
This was a fun one. I think this is a rare case of somebody actually doing worse because they've played the game and have game knowlege. It's funny too since Canon Soldier was part of the first ever tournament winning deck right from day one and saw dominance for years. In fairness tough, those of us playing on the playground sure didn't know that, let alone how to break it.
I wonder how he'd react to the Jinzo archetype?... actually, no I don't, those are some of the worst designed cards ever printed, they'd probably ruin the card for the poor guy. I do not want to be the underpaid underfed intern at Konami who will inevitably need to design cards to force all that Jinzo bloat to be good or at least usable in 5 years (the people who design Hero cards must be on constant suicide watch).

that totals 12 hand rip spells/traps, 9 of which are live turn 1, and you can search them all with TTThrust, along with TTTalents being live because your opponent activated during your turn 1 Main Phase.
Also you have the Ken/Gen engine to forcefully put a monster on their field if they do not commit.
and you can run your own Millers and Runick cards to mill out the Tear deck.
Fun fact Burning dragon is only considered to be decent in 1 deck which is volcanics. But even then, unfortunately its awful.

I mean Ancient Fairy Dragon, Stardust Dragon, heck I even had Red Nova and Quasar at one point in my Zombie deck. Oh and of course fun cards like Level Eater. It was just smack every possible engine into one deck and flood the board with fucked up good cards, be them synchros or XYZ, and then after a few years I quit playing after they banned my favourite card, albeit not a card in my Zombie deck, but I was a Qliphort player... I mean why would they ban Scout, Towers was the evil card.
