The indecisiveness over Crossout Designator is entirely rational considering the difference between it being "nobody plays it" and "it's a staple" is reliant on the presence of a single cockroach.
That cockroach is a pesky one
Hey man, it's not ONE roach, the other cards have one roach. It's called Maxx C because the guy realized his apartment is infested.
It's also a toxic side-board card when versing mirrors or top decks
it's not just the roach, you also include it in your list if the format is full of nibiru or droll and your deck dies if your opponent activates either. especially nib.
nah, it's nor only fo roach but ash, infinite inperm, ogree and also mirror match
Here's a suggestion, show non-yugioh players a full power Tear or Kashtira mirror match and ask them if this is a good deck.
LMAO
Full powered or what we have right now?
Nah show them Synchron mirror
Ask them if Shangri restricting 10 monster zones is fun
@@Primal_NecrozmaFull power. Absolutely full power lol especially on Tear.
'there are other playable danger cards', 'i didn't say that' xD
OOPS
@@TheOneJameYT Actual Gaslighting
I love how respectful he's trying to be to the game of Yugioh. Nice to see a magic player not just crap on the game and say its ridiculous the whole video.
I mean I’m perfectly fine with them formulating their own opinion and voicing it at least once but yeah it feels like an ego trip if they do it repeatedly
Well a lot of other content creators try and tee it up that way for views. Besides most seem pretty respectful, just the ones that limit themselves to their own spaces that have a harder time grasping something different.
As someone who plays both games, Yu Gi Oh is ridiculous in comparison to what even high level competitive Magic looks like.
So what's important about Cold Wave is that even back in the day, if you had a lethal push available, you could just use cold wave to freeze all of your opponent's traps for a turn so they couldn't use them to stop you.
Yep!
Plus preventing setting removes the weakness something like silence has of just holding your interaction for the next turn
on the Danger! Nessie!, revealing nessie and discarding a card at random is not once per turn. The once per turn clause only applies to the effect of adding a non-nessie Danger! that triggers if its discarded. For example if someone negates your nessie (and doesn't destroy it from hand) you can activate it again fine, and can even special summon multiple in the same turn if you have them (and it wasn't restricted).
Yes, the search is once per turn though. I think that's what I was getting at in the video but that's a great point.
It is also seeing plap in both Tearlements (a top deck despite all the limits and bans) and Dark World (degenerate Rogue deck) at the moment
@@scarletterose1303Tear is a top deck? In what format?
@@TheOneJameYT it sounded a bit like Arne understood it as the whole thing was only once haha, dangers are so funny
@@nigerianprinceajaniIt has topped like the past 3 or 4 YCS.
I love this series. Seeing the Nessie this episode made me realize that for meme reasons the next time Nikachu is on this show he absolutely needs to get a Danger! card.
I wholeheartedly agree
wouldve been interesting to see how he react to knowing all of the danger! monsters are based off of cryptids from around the world and that their sharing of the reveal and then random discard to summon themselves is essentially a jumpscare as a mechanic
I haven't thought about them as jumpscares but that makes perfect sense
@@TheOneJameYT yeh its pretty much a 1 for 1 to a stereotypical jumpscare
reveal as cost = getting a glimpse of 'something'
choosing a random card = trying to uncover what you think you might've saw
picking the wrong card = breathing sign of relief as you find nothing
special summons itself = the cryptid is upon you (jumpscare moment)
even the hand can be taken as an undiscernible and mysterious location hiding something; the cryptids themselves in dark forest, tall grass murky waters etc
It is a synchro/xyz/1-tribute setup with a chancy twist. They are a curious set. If you draw another, like with Nessie's tutoring or the second draw, You can flood the field with the Mothman and so forth. The more Art Bell the deck gets, the more they surround the field, like it is the mind of a buff, so you see them EVERYWHERE YOU LOOK. Indeed they are a clever set.
@@residentgrey the way they work is fitting given what they represent. but holy crap have they enabled a lot of degenerate combos and FTKs
As someone who adores Ghostrick which is also all about jumpscares as a mechanic I'm suddenly considering making a Danger! deck.
I remember the day my opponent got up and walked away because I played Forbidden Chalice on my own Amano-Iwato at the end phase.
Hahaha I'd flip the table
making spirit monsters stick after the end phase is something only toxic decks do
Another upside for Nessie is that the card that got discarded for it to special summon itself can also have useful effects upon being sent to the graveyard, so the synergy with graveyard decks like Dark World and Tearlaments is insane.
Yep! I just didn't want to mention those decks to keep it as simple as possible for him, since he doesn't know anything about those decks lol
Amano-Iwato is still used in Master Duel for Runick Stun. Making the runick fountain safe to draw with.
Yep, and all amano-iwato is waiting for to be ban worthy is a good spirit archetype that can use it.
That sounds broken lol
I was about to say that there was no way he forgot about how powerful Amano-Iwato especially if you can negate his effect during the end phase so he stays on the board
My shinobaron spirit ritual deck got punched for no reason, thanks, runick
@@TheOneJameYTIt is!
Amano-Iwato still sees play. Mostly in OCG and Master Duel Runick Stun decks. I've seen some regional-topping Runick Stun decks in the TCG play the card, too, but quite as frequently
I don't pay as much attention to the OCG and Master Duel metas but that's great to know!
It also saw some play in Adventure decks in the TCG that didn't need their Normal Summon, because Rite of Aramasir prevented you from activating the effect to bounce it back to your own hand.
An important point about Crossout Designator that many people miss is that it was used in Meta decks that had lots of space to counter their own outs while also having said outs as an option. This made it significantly more powerful in the Master Duel compared to paper formats.
It helps that in Master Duel the handtrap meta is so rigid that you can actually have some certainty that the majority of opponents will be running maxx C, Ash, Called By.
OCG is a paper format
Another thing to consider though is weaker decks are far more susceptible to hand traps unlike most tiered decks which can play through any 1 or 2 hand traps at least. High tier meta decks would use it probably for the mirror match
@@FrostReave that's what made it unfair in the game at multiple copies. As there was nope hope for decks, to counter the meta that had small engines and a bunch of interrupts. With the counter to those same interrupts.
The good old days of turn 1 Cold Wave + set Ryko. Defeated only by the completely broken response turn of Cyber Dragon + Grand Mole 🤣🤣
Cyber Dragon + Grand Mole was the original FTK lmao
A couple corrections on the Nessie section
-you did say other dangers were playable at one point so he was correct on that information
-the only OPT on Nessie or any other danger is the discard effect, you can reveal as many copies of Nessie as many times as you want. The day 1 knowledge check of playing against danger is knowing that if you Ash one, it does nothing and they can simply reveal again
I like how your explanation of counter traps was just a roundabout way of explaining the old interrupt rules
This lol.
Amano Iwato basically seems like Teferi in how it shuts off your opponents interaction
Yea exactly
It is a limited negate that has niche uses, and can see play even in the current meta, but maindecking it would be a curious development if it proves useful.
Using magic rulings and cards is a great way of explaining Yu-Gi-Oh to magic players and I implore you to continue with that in this series.
Thanks! That’s the plan
I was a MtG player first and I learned today that quick play are like instants during your turn but you need to set them to use them during your opponent turn.
I thought you always needed to set them first to have them as instants
@@laytonjr6601 glad you learned something!
You absolutely said there were other playable dangers
Woops
You are doing something very special with this series. I always look forward to it. Keep up the good work!
Thank you very much! I'm happy people are enjoying it as much as I enjoy making them
Amano-Iwato saw a bit of play with Adventure because it wouldn't go back to the hand
I didn't think of that interaction but that's awesome
I really like his thought process and logic to figuring out how good or not a card is
I'd love to have him back again, but with a couple more bait cards to see how good his analysis is
I’d love to have him back!
You are quite good at making the bridge between magic and ygo. I love hearing how people explain these card games to others who play another card game
Thanks!! It's great to hear that
Agreed , I like that you know magic cards to compare to
Just recently found your channel and I really appreciate that you understand both games and can effectively explain, through comparison, why a card was good or bad. I love these types of videos, but they are usually one-sided explanations that only make sense from one perspective. Thank you for bridging that gap and keep up the great videos!
Glad you like them!
2:23 "there might be like traps cards that blow up the entire board"
Evenly matched: allow me to introduce myself
The reveal effect on Nessie is not once per turn, you can use it multiple times a turn.
You don't usually do that because either it gets discarded or summoned, but if they ash blossom the reveal effect you just laugh and activate it again.
You have definitely taken feedback into account on this episode, and I think the episode is dramatically less frustrating to watch than some of the previous ones as somebody coming from a Yugioh background. You explained the cards around the example when they were relevant without really giving it away so the guessing was fun, and gave equivalent examples for the magic guys watching so it's accessible to both sides which is appreciated. Really good job on this one!
My recommendation is a card like Li-La Rap, which in addition to probably being a funny talking point, is very much a do-nothing card due to the pace of the game and the once per turn/chain but which has a burn effect that seems intimidating. Maybe throw in that the archetype it belongs to does love to summon from GY as a hint, and let them judge knowing that this card is getting used to its fullest but just kind of sucks.
I’m happy you noticed! I’m always trying to improve on each video
also here's a example of the ocg vs the tcg for a magic player to grapple with.
red eyes dark dragoon.
To summarize another yugituber's video on the card's history by megacapital g, it was a absolute menace in the ocg because nothing in the card pool at the time could kill it. When it came into the tcg, there were several different cards for different strategies that could easily deal with the dark dragon.
31:15 The level of Danger! Nessie! does matter, because it can be used in other Level 7 decks like Kashtira or Dark Magician to summon their Rank 7 Xyz monsters.
Yes, I said it matters, but not for our conversation. Listen back again :)
@@TheOneJameYT Level 7 is a huge bonus for engine cards like Danger Nessie! and Wandering Gryphon Rider.
@@pi_xi I’m aware, but that doesn’t mean anything to someone that’s super new to Yugioh
As a Yugioh player, Gamble might be one of the craziest cards I've ever seen (besides demonic tutor, time walk etc. ofc.)
Amano-Iwato still sees play. OCG has been using it in combination with Sales Ban and HAS seen tournament play at least at some of the larger locals in Japan
Good episode btw. I love watching these videos
That's great to know! Didn't know about the OCG.
@@TheOneJameYTthey cook over there
It also has a favorable quality to it in the fact that if you summon it as the first action of your Main Phase, your opponent CANNOT respond with Maxx C (or any monster for that matter), meaning you can play the rest of the turn without worrying about the Roach
Shinobird
The OCG is so weird.
I'm happy for you that you got a sponsor!
Same!!
10:36 I dont know about that one chief, most stun/stall decks still always run Amano-Iwato, check something like Runick for instance along with a bunch of floodgates like There Can Only Be One or Inspector Boarder
I've seen Inspector Boarder played over Amano Iwato but they both see some play
@@TheOneJameYTin master duel it’s very dangerous so it’s even Limited to 1 there .
Should’ve brought up Inspector Boarder as a bonus just to see his reaction.
That card is coming soon! (And already on the Nitpicking Nerds episode if you want to see them read it lol)
An interesting way to have more achtype cards would be say show 3 cards and ask if the archtype won a tournament. That way you an show more complex cards and have clues in how they work together.
E.g show trickstar candina, holy angel and the field spell card.
That's a great idea, showing multiple cards at once. I should try that.
You should show an MTG player some boss monsters (good and bad) and see what they think about them. I know it might be hard to evaluate them in a bubble, but I’d love to see them evaluate the effects of something like Ghoti of the Deep Beyond or Expurrely Happiness
Yea that's a good idea for future videos!
Compare like Ultimate Conductor Tyranno to something like Obelisk the Tormenter.
I picked those two specifically because I murdered my friends God with a Dino. He assumed the targeting protection would save him. Flipped that thing face down then ran over it with the effect 💀
@@RazielTheUnborn lmao that’s hilarious
man i love your yugioh videos its so fun seeing the confused faces of the guests
Haha that's a very fun part about these lol
15:07 "this stops anything" Shows Dark ruler no more.
I'm surprised the usage of Amano-Iwato in Runick wasn't mentioned. That was what got it limited to 1 in Master Duel.
YAY, Cold Wave hype...it's also a very old card.
HYPE!
Would be nice to show them more extra deck monsters. I know youd have to do some explaining but itd be cool to see them figure out completely alien concepts
There have been some extra deck monsters in previous videos (check out the ones with Nitpicking Nerds) but you’re in for a treat soon!
Just a sidepoint about Danger! cards; it's only the second (triggered by being discarded) effect that can only be used once per turn. The first effect has no restrictions, so if the opponent were to ash-blossom the effect to negate it, you can simply activate the effect again when player priority returns to you.
This was a pretty good video nice work on the card selection overall. For future videos in this format I would recommend scripting important information you want to give the guest prior to filming so you can find easy to understand mechanical comparisons you want to use when you are not under the gun. Additionally I strongly recommend either avoiding cards with multiple effects like nessie or explicitly point out where each effect starts and ends in the text as yugiohs psct format isn't great at communicating that a new effect has started especially if you are conditioned to different formatting.
A+ response! Yea I haven’t scripted responses before but that something I can implement
Crossout is so slept on, card is good af with the plethora of handtraps
I love this series ngl Can't believe I subbed to an MTG channel to see some yugioh content lmao
You’ve fallen into my trap card 🤣
Danger! Is great.
Good old criptid deck.
We just need a good Spirit deck and Imano-Iwato will see play again!
More Shino-Birds support! xD
The dude seemed very confused 😂😂
I feel bad for gim lol
I didnt know Cold Wave is still banned lol
He was so good though!
Man, your Solemn Scolding explanation was perfect. Though I'd say the time it was usable was waaay longer ago than it might've been implied. You can still use this card today, but I do feel like there are more flexible cards you can put instead that are less powerful but still more generally useful. But your card explanations this episode was pretty on point in general
Though I'd say the guest being right or wrong is pretty lenient lol
One other thing is that I'd say Amano Iwato doesn't see that much play but still has the potential to come up randomly in some formats. Like Droll and Lock Bird is occasionally completely missing from the scene, but everybody fears its return
Thanks!! Glad you enjoyed the video!!
23:55 See! I told you it works!😂
It also helps Arne is really good. You can tell by the way he evaluates Cold Wave.
One thing I'll say in criticism is the idea of cards being "currently" playable. We have the Dragon Ruler's which were tier 0 at their time and got banned for it. Cold Wave got banned for being cheated but in the case of the Dragon Ruler cards, they're not even remotely as good as they used to be but in a dragon link deck, they're one card..... everything. Judging things based on when they were printed doesn't work either because things like Gizmek Orochi because that card was played in everything for awhile , did not suddenly become bad but is not touched by anything anymore. Then.... we have things like Eclipse Wyvern which were crazy good in the past and still banned but is now, "eclipsed" by half a dozen cards.
I don't know the answer but it's something to think about I guess. 🤷
The talk during Crossout Designator about the difference between countering a spell effect and countering the activation of a spell got me thinking about the best way to translate weird YGO rules to MTG.
As for that distinction, I got to the following:
• normal (and quick-play) spell cards are actually sagas with only one ability, which is the card text (they enter the battlefield as a permanent, trigger their effect, and then go to the graveyard as a state-based action)
• there are two ways to stop their effects: counter the saga before it ETBs (negating the activation), or counter the triggered ability (negating the effect).
• A hard OPT on a spell only counts cards of that name that have ETB’d
Those are good ways of putting it! I might steal this for future videos if it comes up
@@TheOneJameYTI just realized this understanding of spells also makes it very clear that MST doesn’t negate 😂
Counter Traps could be analogous to the retired Interrupt card type in MTG
And a little pointer about Danger! Nessie!
you can activate the gamble effect as many times as you want
you can activate the discard effect only once per turn
this means, you can summon as many Nessie's as your luck lets you in a single turn if they pick other cards than Nessie
but if they discard multiple Nessie's you can only search once
Agreed!
These videos are awesome to watch and I hope this series continues!
I would love to suggest a card like Reasoning or even Chicken Game if it hasn't been done yet and see what the MTG players think 🙂
Thanks! Those are great suggestions
just one thing I wanted to point out is danger! nessie! is not actually once per turn; it's only the search effect that's once per turn. It's reallllyyyyy relevant because it means you can't blossom it or they just get to use it again.
The grave effect is once per turn but not the reveal effect!
@@TheOneJameYT yessir, great video as always :)
Funny that the magic player understood Danger! Nessie! better. You can use the first effect of all dangers as many times as you want per turn. Nessie is also at 3 on the banlist. Not restricted at all. Lots of misinformation this video.
Was restricted, no longer restricted. Idk how I missed this one because I played with and against them all the time!
5:56 **insert SpongeBob "It's a roooock" clip here**
🤣🤣🤣
Solemn Scolding's other problem is that it requires a fix price. Unlike Judgement where it wants half your LP, which makes it super flexible. With scolding? Hope it counts or hope you got healing.
Amano-Iwato in a Prediction Princess deck can be a funny gimmick. Alternatively, if you just want many normal summons, I'd probably go for Floowandereeze, not True-Draco, but those kinda need their effects for it.
Solemn Scolding is only good if your deck doesn't really use other cards you'd set in your backrow. Knowing how much people use Called By and Crossout, to counter handtraps, they sometimes end up being set as well, if they're not used in turn 1, so you can use them in turn 2, to possibly interrupt an opponent's combo, or to block their Ash if you'd start a combo on their turn.
"There could be trap cards that could blow up an entire board, ok, but not that powerful" I saw you clench your lips when he said that XD
🤣🤣🤣
i'd love to see Arne on the show again, he was great!
I agree!
I'm pretty sure a free counter in MTG that cost 8 life would see play in every single format back to Vintage.
Potentially!
5:20
That's the entire appeal of videos like this.
The stars might actually be dragon balls, yugi references dragon balls in the manga very early on, comparing them to the puzzle.
That is very interesting to know!
Imagine playing burning abyss with cold wave against something like altergeist 😂
That sounds like a terrible time 🤣
Jame: Amata awano doesn't see play
My runick stun opponent: nice board bro, normal summon amato awano?
🤣
Would love to see a rating of one of my fave synchros good old swordsoul chengying and maybe the diabelstar dark witch
Good old flopout designator. The most painfully mid card ever.
For some reason I love Morph in magic. I love playing morph decks. I have a commander deck with kadina the slinking sorcerer as my commander
Edit: Im not the best magic player but I enjoy it
I think Sekka's Light is a good card for magic to guess the power level of and a meld card such as Hanweir Battlements could be a good card for YGO players to guess the power level of because it's similar to fusion monsters.
Gotta love how Magic players always get tripped up when they read "Spell card" in an effect and think it means every card
Yep!!
I do wonder if Cold Wave would still be good today, like the effect is broken, but the downsides of not being able to run spells or traps are so limiting nowadays. Like I can't think of any recent good monster mash archetypes, maybe Adamancipator, or Super Heavy Sams (which coincidentally can't run it lol).
32:12 Danger! Nessie! isn't restricted on the banlist as of a few banlists ago lol
How did I not know that lmao

Okay, recommendation for future ones, can we try showing them Pendulum monsters? Itd be funny seeing them question how it works, and why it has two different effect texts. Not to mention, there are many good and bad ones to be used.
Oh that is definitely in the plans you just wait
Itd be so hard to explain though.
Man you gotta give someone frog the jam you'll definitely catch them with it another good one would be tierra source of destruction
lmao that's a mean one!
We gotta show an MTG player Pole Position and Purgatrio >:)

@@TheOneJameYT You gotta appreciate a card that by itself changed the rules of the game you know...
Saying Yu-Gi-Oh is colorless is not fully wrong, but not fully right either
We do have archtypes, and overall deck themes that restrict deck building...
However, Yu-Gi-Oh is indeed much more loose about cardpools
They should do a archetype guessing like this like numeron networks with the gates or them purrely big/smol cats or like the shang/ariseheart combo
Yea I could do a future episode of a whole bunch of archetypes and have them figure out which one is good or bad
Imano iwato was also played in runic
I would enjoy seeing more Yugioh players evaluate Magic cards.
Edit: Oh, also, you misunderstood the Once Per Turn on Nessie. Only the search from deck is once per turn. The reveal/discard/summon/draw effect can be used as many times as you have remaining copies in your hand. This is the case for all Danger monsters. Only their second effect is a once per turn.
Yep!
He said how he feels about RNG, clearly you need to show him nothing but random effects next time! Things like milling in Tear could be considered random too

That would be interesting!
I hope you do one of these but rather than doing it so they are guessing whether a card is seeing play or whatever they are trying to guess whether one of two cards with similar effects *Ultimat Falcon vs Apoqliphort towers* which is “better”
Yea that’s a great idea!
I find it interesting he was concerned about Scolding's LP cost, when Scolding's big brother in most cases will cost you 4K and that's not really a concern at all (partially because it's always payable as you said).
Yea that was interesting for sure
I felt scolding was a mean choice since it feels like scolding was made 10 years ago when judgement is limited so i felt like scolding was missing a lot of card context knowledge to be judged correctly.
It be fun to test people starting from it full power card to their detrain cards to see how much restrictions they need to throw onto a card for it too finally stop seeing play.
Like change of heart, pre errata brain control to mind control etc.
*note i stopped playing near the end of goat format and only came back to yugioh because of md so not sure if im correct or not*
