People have said they would've preferred if he wasn't a sleeper agent but honestly that's the most unique thing Brandon has going for him compared to other evil supermen. Outside of maybe Homelander being a lab baby.
Also in the beginning of the movie when his Biology class talks about the difference between bees and wasps and Brandon gives a long explanation about how some sorts of wasps lay their eggs in other insects nests so they would be raised by them and after growing up they take those nests for themselves it was a huge foreshadowing for his fate because that seems to be exactly what his kind does
I think this movie fails to capture the nuance this type of story requires I would've liked it better if he wasn't a sleeper agent but just a kid with godlike powers doing whatever the fuck he wants because nobody can stop him or hell have him have a bad upbringing anything is better than the severely overused sleeper agent plot
Doesn’t matter what type, the thing that should’ve cut his hand or whatever (been a while) earlier should’ve tipped him off. Plus he’s an alien. Idk what the logic is about people trying to shoot at things when it clearly won’t work (such as robots)

@@LeadTheWeak Akira Toriyama: "A couple of concerned parents fearing for the future of his planet send his son to earth where he becomes a superstrong hero, I'm very creative!"
Everyone is shitting on Tori but like 😭 I understand her character. She believed the universe gifted her a baby and saw him as a miracle. He was her son and she loved him unconditionally like any mother would. I mean she raised him and got to know him for 12 years. So I think it makes perfect sense she was in denial for so long
Father:Just got shoved hard enough to shatter an entire furniture to mere pieces by a 12 year old kid Mother: How could brandon kill Noah and make it look like an accident
The ironic thing is that at the end, she actually might have been able to talk him down and bring him back to the light since he shows that he still loves her and is willing to listen, but because she tried to kill him, she basically ruined any chance of that.
I would have liked this movie so much more if they dropped the whole alien sleeper agent angle. There was no outside influence. Maybe Brandon's real parents had nothing but innocent intentions. I think it's just far more frightening to think of what would happen if a child with godlike powers came to a simple realization: no one in the entire world can ever tell him no.
Agreed, not the biggest fan of the use of mind control or possession in most stories. It just seems much more interesting if characters act of their own beliefs and volitions
While that is true, I think it’s more than that. I like the story “Irredeemable” for this because it tackles an evil superman very well, it was the influences and upbringing that defines everything about an individual. Superman’s heroics are only second to the heroism that his parents gave to him, I think that it’s a better story if the parents were assholes and so this god grew up to be one too
"The kid has never bled a day in his life here!" "Okay, got him out hunting. Time to use this gun which I already stated won't work at all. Good plan."
MrAcrum what else could he do in this situation? He doesn’t exactly have any Halo-style energy weapons lying around. MAYBE he could’ve grabbed a piece of the ship/meteor thing, but he probably overlooked it in his distressed mindset
Someone had to try something at least. Needs to be a hero at some point in the movie. Can't just have every character acting like a total oblivious moron and letting him just do whatever the fuck.
6:03, With how we tend to here Brandon's movement's, at least when he's not flying or interacting much with surfaces (as his flight allows him to move silently, while his speed walking later at the diner is audible), I'd say this was telekinesis. Given the electromagnetic interference and extreme temperatures he can cause with his presence, it seems to suggest that much like Brandon himself, his powers have as much in common with that of a Saiyan (or more specifically, Goku) from Dragon Ball as that of a Kryptonian from DC Comics, as the former are able to generate energy and affect their environment (and themselves) with their minds to a degree, but the main reason they and other Dragon Ball characters tend to not use it combatively is due to concentration, as it's relatively far easier for them to focus on their own bodies and movements (hence their enhanced physicalities and ability to fly) than that of whatever external thing they are focusing on. And even more interestingly than that is that there is another original supervillain origin film called Chronicle with characters that are explicitly telekinetic. That or he’s just using his flight to move fast enough to close the laptop and leave before being seen the way he got behind the police woman from outside the house in a matter of seconds without a sound.
Tori : Perhaps we should see a specialist? Talk about it? Kyle: To tell him what? Hello, we found our son in a fuc**** spaceship in the woods? Yeah… I kinda agree with him there. lol
I think this movie would have been much more successful if it was made like 10 years earlier because back then superhero movies were still a fresh sub-genre and people were more receptive to new and different ideas like this one, I heard James Gunn actually wanted BrightBurn to have it’s own Universe and make a franchise out of it or something but I guess now he is working at the DC reboot he is going to get way too busy the next few years to worry about this, or maybe he will remember it and give it a sequel when he gets some free time from Warner, time will tell
I love how she literally needed to read a children's book and see the pictures to get the hint that maaaaybe it's her Alien son that was doing all the alien stuff.
You know the term “enabling” is anti-euphemistic. LoL. His parents were flat out clueless. They were humanly incapable of raising a good kid. This film is amazingly fitting for these times.
"How can he kill him and make it look like a car accident" This is the same words from a person who literally saw him float, took him from a crater in an alien space ship. lol
Not to mention she literally just saw her son shove her grown husband into glass so hard that it shattered but making murder look like a car accident no that's so unbelievable(sarcasm)
i think james gunn has said he is interested in bringing brightburn back , but at the moment he was busy working on the suicide squad(one less i guess) and guardians vol 3(still to be seen) so maybe after guardians 3 comes out we will see if brighburn does come back
Noahs kill was actually pretty cool, the way his mouth hits the wheel and then you see it detach while hes laying there helplessly watching Brandon walk up to him is something i wont forget for a while lol
Yeah that one was actually pretty gruesome, because it had some realism to it. And I've seen actual footage of soldiers in Afghanistan getting blown up from IEDs
I always felt this movie was an idea that never took off. I mean, the idea is "what if Superman was a psychopath" and it stayed there. There's no plot, no character development, no nothing. It's amazing how you know everything about this flick just by reading one sentence.
You don't need "character development" for a good story. What did you want? The boy to find empathy in the last moment and feel sorry? Would that made it better for you? The boy actually did have character development. He started out as a good boy and turned more and more into a total psycopath. The mother also eventually turned around and was willing to kill her child for the greater good. So yeah, character development was there. You just didn't like it. Also, you don't need a sad backstory of child abuse to justify a villains actions. Some people are just deranged psycopaths.
Thought I’d note this at the beginning of the video before the kills: I love the intros James, hearing your thoughts and all the behind the scenes stuff draws me in every time. Don’t let some negative feedback dissuade you, I’m in it for all the content, not just the bloody goodness. Stay awesome.
The scariest part to me is how Brandon’s mom is so unwilling to see the truth until it’s too late I’ve seen that sort of thing happen irl, people who can’t handle reality and will ignore any amount of evidence... it’s scary, like talking to someone with a brain parasite
Brandon came to save the world, humans like you just forgot that that the world doesn’t revolve around humanity, even as humanity does its best to abuse it and force it to.
She let him down emotionally so he let her down literally EDIT: I just found out there was another comment of this I’m sorry didn’t mean to take it Ano a d a edit 999 likes rn
As someone who lives in and has grown up in Kansas, I can confirm that this happens probably twice a year. We’re really tired of getting alien super heros and villains in our fields, so maybe the coasts could take one for the team and take the next one?
I feel like it would’ve been interesting to add a sibling to the mix- maybe one they adopted after Brandon is staring to become off. It might develop good character depth for Brandon, maybe seeing him as an a bad guy but still wanting to do “good” in the end (if that makes sense.) What I’m meaning is, flesh out the story more! Sure, the movie would be longer, but that’s the whole point, give the story more depth and more detail to personality!
this is barely an origin story this is just activated alien baby. like superman was good because he was raised very well, like if Brandon wasn't raised well and was treated horribly growing up would've been more interesting to see
The thing that sucks is the film feels unsure what to do with it The movie plays with the whole “sleeper agent” concept but there’s also the idea he’s always had this ability and his parents just raised him poorly (that scene talking about birds and the bees)
There was so much wasted potential in this movie. I thought Brandon would become a sympathetic villain like Andrew from Chronicle, from the unfairness of the world around him because he was being bullied and no one accepts him, that stuff. But no. And the parents are terrible.
Dude - that's literally the PLOT of Brightburn. He's bullied, nobody tries to understanding him - instead, disregarding everything about him and betraying him. The ENTIRE plot was him being mistreated.
That does prove that he is just overtaken by a program or something because he loves her mother and knows he could have easily dodged that and just let her be. Instead the program saw it has threat to the host and removed the threat.
There was nothing she could have done to stop him Brandon from going full evil at that point. If anything I feel like Brandon was gonna let her live peacefully alone because he did love her but once she tried to kill him he said aight you're dying too. He did love her right before that moment tho
Even though most of the people in horror movies that are terrible get killed like Annie Wilkes from Misery, I feel sad and bad about it but this is the black sheep of the bunch, Brandon was just a narcissistic tapeworm A-hole that fell out the sky.

I always felt this movie was an idea that never took off. I mean, the idea is "what if Superman was a psychopath" and it stayed there. There's no plot, no character development, no nothing. It's amazing how you know everything about this flick just by reading one sentence.
They’ve certainly made horror movies out of less before
and you know, that's been done several times. Omniman and Homelander as examples
What if Superman was a Psychopath??? Injustice???
You don't need "character development" for a good story. What did you want? The boy to find empathy in the last moment and feel sorry? Would that made it better for you? The boy actually did have character development. He started out as a good boy and turned more and more into a total psycopath. The mother also eventually turned around and was willing to kill her child for the greater good. So yeah, character development was there. You just didn't like it.
Also, you don't need a sad backstory of child abuse to justify a villains actions. Some people are just deranged psycopaths.

This is pretty much if Superman has to deal with the numbers.
The thing that sucks is the film feels unsure what to do with it
The movie plays with the whole “sleeper agent” concept but there’s also the idea he’s always had this ability and his parents just raised him poorly (that scene talking about birds and the bees)
Bruno Souza exactly it shows how it affects him, essentially turning him into a murderous psycho
I think Brandon’s mom actually could of guided him to better morals in that moment, but then she tried to kill him so he was like alright F you
That does prove that he is just overtaken by a program or something because he loves her mother and knows he could have easily dodged that and just let her be.
Like in Looper?
Hasn't he tried to kill her destroying the house? Such a nice boy for sure
