Great video, as always, Martin. In addition to the great views, I always appreciate your great radio work (keeps me mentally sharp when I can’t get in the air as often as I’d like) and when you narrate complicated airspace issues or comm breakdowns. Always a learning experience. Thanks!
At 10:13 at the bottom center of the screen you can see the lot where the Chaplain Towers South condo used to stand before it collapsed in June killing 98. Such a sad story. Interesting to see how much it's changed from the air.
I always learn something from your videos and others. I did that flight 2months ago for the first time but felt behind and did not call approach. Luckily military base was closed. Good radio calls on this video.
Glad you were able to make this flight. From Melbourne to Fort Lauderdale it's rapid fire with regard to Class C/D airports and talking to many different ATC facilities. - Martin
@@martinpauly Yes I do!!🤦🏼♀️ I have no life-work, work, work… 33 days till Vero Beach for 🎄Christmas ( sadly tours at the Piper factory are closed) + 2 months Cocoa 🏖 Beach you know I’m gonna get some flying in! ✈️ These videos for me are gold! 🏆 Blue sky’s, Martin🥂Cheers
I enjoyed your first video so much I decided to take the same flight myself in an A36 Bonanza. Since I was in my MSFS Bonanza i didn't have to worry about ATC. The second video was just as awesome as the first.
Thanks very much for this, Martin! I somehow missed the alert when Part II went live, but I had a blast watching it this evening. These are my old stomping grounds and it was wonderful to see everything from the air, again. Looking forward to our own flight down the coast to EYW in the not-too-distant future. This preview of the trip is very helpful and I thank you for sharing.
Hi Martin nice video as always. Question what is the traffic from North to South is the south bound traffic had to be further out of the beach shore line and the north bound over the beach line shore line. I like to try it but can find the traffic on that transition. tyvm Dave.
I've taken the E170 into that airport many a time, always fun. fun, too, on the days when the navy guys are flying and you cant get a word in on the approach frequency
Martin, I really enjoyed this video. I have been there many times driving and a couple of times we have biked the 150 miles. To see it from the air was an exceptional perspective. Thank you for this and all of the videos you are producing. Seeing Salute, the restaurant on your landing brought back many memories too.
Thanks, Edwin. Glad to hear you enjoyed the views on this trip from a different perspective. I have yet to make this bike ride - hopefully some day! - Martin
I did a portion of this- Pompano to mid-Keys and then up the west coast - with a local pilot. What a fun flight! Of course, sitting at home I caught the transmission correction. But I also I heard part of a transmission earlier to change to 119.3 which I thought was meant for you. Can be tough when it gets that busy, especially with terrain warnings blaring constantly!
Thanks, Mark. The whole thing was a bit confusing. The Miami TAC spells out exactly how to contact FFL Tower, but then in real life they use different frequencies. And of course my missing of the corrected callsign in the controller's transmission. - Martin
I enjoyed watching your videos of flying to Key West. That is on my list of things I want to do. After watching your video I feel it would be easier to repeat the steps you took.
Thanks, Gary. That's what I always hope my videos will do: help other pilots anticipate what a flight will be like, and in turn make the planning of such a flight easier. Enjoy your weekend! - Martin
Martin, you are such a pro. Very enjoyable flight. I guess the price for that great view along the shoreline is all those transition calls. Congrats on your ABS instructor rating!!!
Hi Martin. Great video and procedures. I’ve done this many times, but only down to Miami’s stiltsville. By KFLL, have to watch for para gliders towed by boats😳 Good to see you again. We met at sun n fun, I was with Eric and Valerie-baron pilots. I just sold my Cherokee six and bought a 1947 35 Bonanza. See you again sometime👍🏻 Captain Dave
Hey Martin. Great video. My fiancé and I are planning on a similar trip in November. Arriving to Key West from the Everglades. Will do this flight heading North back to Sebastian. Been useful to see how you passed through all the airspace. We are UK based pilots so its a great way to learn what to expect. It will be our first time flying in the US.
Hi Sean, I hope you and your fiancé will have a great time flying in the US, especially along the coast. It's a beautiful sight from the air! Regards, Martin
Martin, little late watching this video. Question: On the VFR corridor, what would you have had to do if you were not able to reach Ft. Lauderdale approach? I am guessing you would have not essentially been cleared and would have had to fly out further under the outer shelf and just stay below 1200?
That's exactly right, Stevie. A few miles off-shore, under the Class Charlie shelf would have been the way to go. An alternative could be to do 360s before entering their airspace while trying to make contact. - Martin
I saw you called key west approach. I see a navy approach frequency listed. Being key west is a class d, can you just contact tower ten miles out? Plan on flying in here soon and watched the video to see what it looks like.
Yes, Marc - I see no airspace in that area which requires talking to Approach, so you could just get with Tower when you are closer. However, it seemed prudent to work with Approach for flight following/traffic advisories. - Martin
Hi David, Loss of an engine would likely have resulted in getting wet on this flight, and we did carry life vests. I actually got more nervous on the way back north where for half an hour I flew over the Everglades - beautiful sights, but given a choice I'd take a waterlanding in the Florida Bay over Alligator-infested swamps. Regards, Martin
The part of the Keys this comment was referring to was far from Key West, and only about VRBOs. You can still book a hotel anywhere for as long or as short of a stay as you like. Regards, Martin
There's no place like the Keys. Great flight and an excellent example of VFR radio work in congested airspace. I'm curious...was it because of sketchy radar coverage that you didn't (or didn't seem to) have continuous flight following to Key West? Also...after more time with your Axis headset, are you still liking it better than the Halo's? Thanks for sharing.
Hi Joe. I figured flight following wouldn't work well as low as I was flying much of the time (500' in some places). For example, to even reach Orlando Approach prior to entering the Kennedy Space Center area, I had to climb to about 2,000. So I decided it'll be easier if I proceed without flight following for this flight. It's not what I normally do, but then normally I fly much higher. Regards, Martin
Just curious, do you have to be on the ground to disable the terrain warning or can that be done in flight if you are not too busy? which you most certainly were busy.
I could have disabled the terrain warning it in flight. My selection of the scenes for the video makes it look (sound) worse than it was; the system was not yelling at us the whole time. - Martin
Martin, I’m curious as to why you didn’t pick up VFR Flight Following for this trip. Given the number of airspace transitions you made, I would think this would have reduced your workload considerably…?
Good question, James. Maybe it would have helped. From my experience, what Flight Following can do depends a bit on the region. Not having flown much in Florida, I wouldn't know what the limits of FF are, whereas doing it all myself - while more work - made it more predictable. Also, at some of those altitudes we were flying at I would not have been able to remain in radio contact with ATC. Regards, Martin
@@martinpauly Flight Following in Florida is very helpful when VFR which I recommend most of the time when flying down here in our category of aircraft. My experience has been that controllers give you almost unlimited flexibility regarding heading/altitude, reliably call out traffic, and will work with you to coordinate airspace transitions. You get treated almost like IFR aircraft minus the constraints associated with IFR.
I have a similar experience where ATC said one thing, and my brain perfectly filtered it with what i expected to hear. (They said 0-9-0, and I heard 1-9-0 because I was expecting it) Later I heard a recording and it was clearly my error. Its a creepy feeling but a very good learning moment, and now I am hyper-aware of what Im hearing and not what Im expecting.
to be honest I almost stopped watching this video cuz these warnings are too loud and annoying... is it possible next time to have them softer like as a background sound... especially when the ATC is talking and these warnings start, its too much and unpleasant to watch too.... during flights with clear view, I always turn these annoying warnings also off.... not necessary..... just my 2 cents...
Thanks for taking this old sport pilot Champ pilot along watching on my tv
My pleasure!
