- This video shows an IFR flight from Beverly, MA, to New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport, a.k.a. JFK. Starting off in nice, sunny weather, conditions get worse over time, up to an instrument landing (ILS) on Kennedy's runway 22L. This flight also includes a holding pattern - first time I had to do that in almost 20 years of instrument flying.

Well, for not holding in almost 20 years, and never because you had to, you lucked out with a really simple hold! I've also not held since IFR instruction, and would've broken out in an instant, cold sweat at the mere mention of holding instructions!
You are correct - this was a fairly simple hold. I find that even with confusing holding instructions, drawing a simple picture of my location, the hold and the fix it references, things become quite manageable.

That was a fun flight! Light IFR, a great iconic airport, and a bit of an IFR challenge (hold at a DME fix), and the family was there to enjoy it with me. 👍
Great video. Nice to see the hold instructions "in the real world." Now you've gotta fly somewhere where you can get a DME arc so you can complete your IFR bucket list ;-). Also, I love the professionalism of the NYC controllers. I fly in that area about 2-3x per years and always am very pleasantly surprised how nice these guys are.
I just saw your comment from 3 months ago, must have missed it previously... Yes, DME arcs - I have flown them, but I think they are going the way of the NDB approach. With GPS and SBAS/LPV approaches, who needs DME arcs? I see a return of arcs in RNP approaches, but I am not able to navigate those with my Garmin 530W.
I agree with your NYC controller comment. The whole northeast, really. I did not have any issues whatsoever during this trip, everybody treated me nicely and professionally.

Wonderful video of JFK. Brings back many memories. Landed there many times flying a Beech 99 for a commuter airline (Monmouth Airlines). Our "terminal" was the old TWA terminal accessed by walking around all of the baggage carts!!!! In those days there was a short (5000') general aviation runway no longer used. Thanks again.

Another 5 star video Martin. I equally enjoyed the second cross country from your touchdown point to the GA Terminal. Having Foreflight (or Garmin Pilot Safe Taxi which I use) seems indispensable for orientation at new and particularly large airports even though your taxi route was rather straight forward...........literally. These videos are enormously instructive for me as an instrument student as the biggest fear I still have (concern really) is the anticipation of unexpected ATC instructions at just a point where overload would occur from saturation. Watching your videos encourage me to believe I'll eventually be able to master it. Thx again.

Only very few airports need an IFR reservation these days. LGA is one of them, JFK is not.

Alright, watching that was a lot of fun, and I fly in and out of a lot if different airports. Never anything as big and as complicated as JFK. I flew OVER JFK once in my Mooney and flew into SEA TAC in my 172. A piece of cake compared to your experience. Thank you so much for sharing. You even included the early turn off. Very noble. Great video, Martin. I don't think I'd try for JFK now, although I flew out of there for many years as an 747 captain. Retired many years, and these days I'm learning a lot about the Avidyne 550 in my TB-20 (out of KGFL), so I followed your flight on the iPad simulator for this flight. Great practice, and setting up a hold a the 8nm fix was a very good exercise. I'd love to have you along for a few instructional flights.
Fantastic! Almost a thriller with that hold and then the max speed localizer approach. I lived in that part of the country for a few years and hated it but do wish to fly around there sometime.

Very well done video. $45 every 8 hours!!! What !!! Man that is a killer. I fly my P35 into Oakland several times a year both IFR and VFR. Always got great service from ATC and tower. This year they started landing fee of $45, FBO parking $20 per night. Handling fee waved if buying gas. Still nice Bay Area airport to use and close to Bart system. Love your narration of video. Very good and informative. Cool accent too.

Martin, thanks for the video. This past year I finally got back flying on a regular basis after having only logged 13 hours or so since picking up my ticket back in 2006.
While working on my flight review back in April, I finally had a chance to hit up a Class B airfield (DTW), and while it was admittedly a slower time for them, it wasn't bad as I expected.
This video definitely has me interested in flying into other larger airports once I have my instrument rating knocked out (which I just started a couple weeks ago).

Only thing missing was Kennedy Steve! Good job with some fairly complicated instructions. Taxi was nearly as long as the flight. :)

You mentioned in the previous vid that on this trip the ATC was harder to understand. Yeah, I was going to say that in the NE, it's probably the accents, and the speed at which they talk. ; )

The taxi at Kennedy was almost as long as the flight
No kidding, William! Of course, on the few occasions that I get to fly into such a large airport, taxiing is a big part of the fun and excitement. So I'm not complaining. :-)

This was the first time I have watched one of your videos, and it was excellent. I was impressed by your professionalism as well as that of the controllers. In fact, I was struck by how courteous the NY area controllers were, despite their near ferocious reputation, perhaps undeservedly so.
Hi John, thank you for your kind words. This trip last summer was only my second time out to the east coast, and we covered New York City, Boston, Martha's Vineyard, and a couple of smaller places, all over roughly two weeks. Not once did I have an issue with ATC, everyone was very helpful - my only difficulty in that regard was that some of the controllers speak quite a bit faster than here in the Midwest.
he understands and speaks english which is a big plus regarding the controllers being nice.
also he didn't slow from the 250 knots assigned by boston center which is a big nono to get out some of the ferociousness. with all the vectoring they really don't like people slowing especially without saying so.
150 to 160 knots on final is quite acceptable for the ILS they normally assign 180 knots to 5 miles out.
if you want to get an impression of the controllers in the area may i recommend www.liveatc.net/search/?icao=jfk especially 125.7 which is the main approach frequency for JFK.
from my listening i must say JFK tower and especially ground are more likely to get ferocious compared with approach.
approach gets annoyed and stressed but mostly that's it.
tower and ground (which is a different ATC unit) have some controllers who can get quite angry.
but if you are stepped on literally every transmission it gets very tedious.
the frequency wasn't overly busy also so that's a plus :)
the reason for the hold was probably the weather rolling in and a corresponding runway change (he checked VOR/DME 22L i believe after first hearing the ATIS)
that's often used together with VOR13L landing and departing 13R.
switching to the ILS22L means LGA can't do certain departure/approach patterns because the VOR approach course is further east compared to the ILS.

I was waiting for Kennedy Steve (now retired, and probably newly retired when you flew in) to tell one of the airliners to 'give way to the top 2%, you! LOL The landing fee wasn't nearly as bad as what I thought it would have been, but the parking was kind of nuts.

In the 1980’s I did the same thing in a Piper Archer in an night landing after which the landing light burned out. If GoPro recording was available then, the playback it would have produced a real thriller for GA enthusiasts. Additionally, in 1983 the landing fee at Washington National was only $3.00 and overnight tie down $4.00 which then was cheaper than long-term auto parking. Those were the days.
Ah bummer, you got rerouted and put up a graphic just over acquidneck island in RI. I saw you had UUU as part of your route, I was looking forward to seeing Newport from the air.

Would you mind sharing how you navigated the DME hold? Were you using the distance to DPK on your GPS, or did you maybe set up a user waypoint?

For this hold, the math was easy enough just looking at the distance to DPK. In this case I received the hold instructions rather late when I was almost over the fix, so there wasn't much time to do anything but that.

Geez, got lucky letting them approve that flight plan. In the early 2000s I tried several times to try to get into tampa intl. They usually reject it.
Interesting that you say that. I've been flying all over the US for twenty years, including several of the largest airports. I've never been turned down. The worst I remember was back in 1999 I went to St. Louis, back when that was the TWA main hub, in a Cessna 172. I was told to expect a 45-minute wait in a hold. I said "ok". In the end they worked me in right away, no hold. And very few airports in the US require a reservation today for GA these days.

Wonderful video ! The use of charts in the bottom corner was excellent and great for situational awareness as we watched the video. I have flown into JFK hundreds of times with my airline, but this seemed far more stressful. Great job. BTW, what headset do you use, and is it as good as the Bose A20 for noise reduction?

Yes, holds do happen - thought this was a first for me in almost 20 years of instrument flying (granted, only as a hobby). I was sure glad I had practiced them every now and then when the New York controller gave me one for real.

They hold you above KISP to sway you into landing there or at KFRG, where you can get a train to nyc.

Awesome job! Welcome to my back yard. Just out of curiosity, why did you opt for JFK over TEB? The fees alone (not to mention the $7/gal avgas) scares 99% of the GA crowd away. TEB is just as convenient in terms of accessing Manhattan.
Thanks, S4 Aviator! I had been to TEB previously, a couple of years ago. A very nice airport and, no doubt, a more economical (and more convenient) option to get to Manhattan compared with JFK. However, on this trip I specifically wanted to check off JFK from my bucket list, just for the big airport experience.
Hi Martin, Enjoyed following your flight to JFK. Neat work! Have you ever flown into Oshkosh? during the EAA week? That plug lead must have been driving you crazy. Trust you were able to get that repaired in due course. I was an avionics man all my working life and got to diagnose mag noise many times. Even had that happen in my C33 at times. John.
Thanks, John. Yes, I was in Oshkosh just this year, spent the whole week there for the first time. I made a video recently explaining why I had not been there before ("RAGBRAI vs. Oshkosh").
The ignition noise has been gone for a while. Complete replacement of the ignition harness solved that problem, as you can hear in my newer videos.

Yes, the 757 is bad in that regard, but it was six miles ahead of me, or roughly three minutes at my normal approach speed.

Hi Shariq, you did not miss it - this was an IFR flight, so no clearance was needed to enter the Class Bravo airspace. That only applies to VFR flights.
On my other Kennedy video, the one where I take off, I departed VFR, and you can hear the Class Bravo clearance while still on the ground from Clearance Delivery.

Bob, sorry about the delay - for some reason I jut now saw your question. You can think of "Class Bravo" airspace as airspace around the nation's busiest airports, where aircraft flying under visual flight rules need an explicit clearance from air traffic control to fly.
Awesome video! As someone who hopes to start flight training one day and get my PPL, I liked seeing a real world GA pilot. You earned yourself a subscriber! If I may ask, do you fly for work or anything? How often do you fly?

I try to get the plane out once a week, which is good for the plane and the pilot alike. Doesn't always work, but that's what I aim for.

Excellent job. Pretty expensive to land JFK!! Just as FYI you can land in NJ and save a lot $ and still enjoy Manhattan by rental car. MMU, CDW, TEB in the north and 39N, 47N in the South of NJ.
Well, yes and no. Landing at JFK was not bad, but parking was very expensive. What I probably should have done (to save some $$$) is to fly to JFK first, but then quickly move the plane over to Teterboro or one of the other GA airports nearby.
Abraham, I have already had this $$$$$$$ conversation with Martin after he went to DFW. He does it for sport, no matter the cost! :-)
