Flying Low & Slow to Key West - Part I

- Enjoy the view from down low as we fly the Bonanza along the eastern coast Florida's all the way to Key West. Part I takes us from Flagler to Palm Beach and includes a low approach over NASA's Space Shuttle landing strip at Cape Canaveral.

@@martinpauly I'm a ships Captain, 100 ton, outta Key Largo. Worked Marine Salvage out of Key West and Texas. Though my favorite thing to do is take a little hopper, sea plane out of Key West or Marathon and fly over the Islands. My Son is very interested in becoming a Pilot. I just put the bug back in him ! 😊

Nope Presidential 1 was the callsign for the Gulfstreams that Shawn "Corporate Pilot life" used to fly. This was a really cool flight and I am looking forward to the next one! Thanks for sharing this with us all.

When the NASA tower is inactive, 500 ft minimum AGL, and you should announce on CTAF (same frequency as Tower) your intentions. Just FYI for others watching the video
Good point. I was on the Approach frequency (Flight Following) instead, but you are right, of course.

Haven't flown in years but stopped in Flagler years ago a couple times to eat at a little restaurant on the field there.
Cool video Martin! Appears you flew right over my house in Satellite Beach just south of Patrick SFB. We are renting here while building a new house on Merritt Island. Next time your down this way give me a buzz if you stop at MLB or COI.

Super video with great scenery! I also always give Class Delta towers a courtesy call when overflying. Couldn’t believe that tower’s response! In all my experiences they were always appreciative, plus I want them to know where I am before they clear some jet to depart !
My experience is it varies. Class Ds are primarily concerned with sequencing their own traffic and really don't care what's going on in TRACON airspace. No jurisdiction and no authority. I heard pretty much the same comment years ago. We think it's a courtesy, they an annoyance.
I understand what you mean by "no jurisdiction and no authority". At the same time, a departing jet leaves that Class D airspace in less than 60 seconds, and as a departing or arriving pilot it helps me to have awareness of what comes once I leave the confines of the Class D. Many Tower controllers seem to appreciate knowing what the intentions of nearby VFR traffic are.

Martin, I totally understand and agree with you. I'm thinking you probably woke him up, but absolutely, you don't want to be caught in the wake of a jet or worse. Great flight! And heading over to part two next. I just bought a well maintained C35 and will be making a flight from KCRP to KSRQ to visit my son in the not too distant future. Obviously the other side of the state but would like to continue down to Key West.

I’m a little curious as to why one wouldn’t be able to request a Daytona Beach “shoreline transition” prior to takeoff from Flagler. We do something similar to that at my home airport in Hayward, CA which is just southeast of the KOAK Class Charlie airspace. Right after our taxi clearance is issued, if we haven’t already requested it, we’ll say something like, “Hayward Ground, Decathlon 245 VFR request.” Of course they’ll say to go ahead. We’ll say, “Decathlon 245 request Bay Tour.” A quick phone call from Hayward Tower to Oakland Tower lets them know that we’re coming through their airspace. NORCAL Approach is in on it also because we’ll be handed off to NORCAL once clear of Oakland airspace. We will have a squawk code before we reach the run up area. In my example, our departure control frequency will be Oakland Tower, 118.3.
It just seems to me that as close as Flagler is to Daytona Beach, a whole bunch of inflight requesting could be avoided by simply asking ahead of time. If anyone flying out of Flagler wants to try this, let us know if they’ll give you a squawk code and frequency prior to takeoff. I bet that they will. Hope that helps.
That would sure make things easier. Maybe someone with local knowledge will chime in and provide an explanation?

Scoping out some real estate?? Pretty incredible views down that low. Can't be too many pilots who've flown over the shuttle runway. Look forward to part 2.
It would be nice to live on the coast down there, but it's a little out of my price range, Ken.

Yeah they always ask you to fly offshore when you’re heading down the coast because so many people fly over the beach directly including the banner planes

Presidential Aviation out of Ft Lauderdale is a charter company, though Trump One flies out of KPBI for Mar-a-lago trips.
Fun video Martin. We did the Shuttle Landing Facility a couple years ago and then flew north to SSI. So much beautiful scenery. We did flight following the whole way at about 1000 AGL. Made the airspaces a non-issue. Curious why you chose to go on a 1200 code?
Jim, I wanted the ability to fly very low (500') on this flight, at least while not in controlled airspace. That makes it harder to stay in radio contact with ATC, and Flight Following also sometimes leads to altitude and route assignments. The way I did it was much higher workload, but it was a fun change from my normal routine of flying under ATC control.

Have you stopped transcribing the incoming radio transmissions? I’ve always thought they were great (even the ATIS).
I transcribe the ATC transmissions in videos where radio communications is a focus, like in my IFR and Class Bravo videos. When it's mostly about the scenery outside like in the Florida Keys video, I usually don't - it takes a LOT of time to do it.

if they are not busy i will cold call em and let them know my intentions. if they are busy i just monitor so when they do launch a G750 off i am more aware of what is being flung off that airports runway thankfully the big fast stuff works with ADSB
sadly some people dont like the job.

Nice flight but you sure were busy. Is that a function of altitude, location or both?
Harry, it was mostly the relatively complex airspace in Florida (compared with most other states). Lots of towered airports and restricted airspace, and of course also a lot of airplanes flying in that airspace.

Dave, the camera we used is a Sony a7siii in a SmallRig camera cage, with the Sony FE 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 G OSS lens.
