One note I'd add to differentiate the Gunlance and Lance is speed. At first glance Lance and Gunlance can look like the "Daniel vs The Cooler Daniel" meme, but the reality is that they're two opposites of a coin. The lance is fast and constantly aggro - chaining that three hit combo over, and over, and over, always hopping between combos, mixing in the counters. It is a non-stop flurry that keeps on going. The gunlance, on the other hand, is slow, meticulous, but hits like a truck. The lance is like the defensive duelist, light on its feet, quick, agile, always in your feet, while the gunlance is the knight in full plate, slower, more patient, heavier. So while they might seem similar in that they're both big shield weapons, in reality they'll behave much differently, so if you're looking to pick up one of those tank weapons, consider wether you normally gravitate to the fast paced weapons, or the slow, heavier hitting ones.
If you're new to monster hunter, pick up a weapon that looks cool, give it a try, check out a weapon guide to see if you're missing something fundamental to that weapon. Have fun.

I'll second your review of the Switch Axe. My first MH was World, and I used the Switch Axe before realizing it was generally considered a more "complicated" weapon. That said, it's really only as complicated as you want it to be. It remains quite viable even if you keep it in axe mode almost all the time. Then if you're feeling adventurous, dip your toe into some sword action. That's the main reason why I never even tried any other weapons in World - I was having too much fun with the Switch Axe.
I’ve been a bow main all my life, dabbled with Insect Glaive and Charge Blade a bit, but Bow is still 90% of my play time. MH Rise is the first MH I’ve played where I had this desire to use almost every weapon. The new mechanics and wirebug moves adds such a layer of gameplay that’s just... ugh. Phenomenal. It’s amazing how Capcom, not only make 14 incredibly distinct weapons, but adding the witebug to compliment everyone’s style of play too.
Other way around for me, though this was a problem in World too. I always played every weapon but starting in World most of the weapons felt bad to use, and they just threw out what a lot of weapons (bow included) used to be. Meanwhile (especially in the context of how different everything used to feel) most weapons feel the same now too (ie it's all slow stationary burst damage that you spam but with arbitrarily good mobility when not attacking, so for instance if you look at both objectively DB is just GS with bad reach and sharpness problems). Really sad.

Nice coverage here. I would also mention that Bows have one other complication as a ranged weapon. The one Bow-specific complication that one should get a feel for the proper attack distance, for damage. If you are too close or too far, you do significantly less damage with your attacks, depending on the arrow type chosen. Something the Bowguns don’t deal with. In a typical MH game, one could feel for the proper distance if the screen shakes upon impact. Just wanted to note that because when I go between Bows and Bowguns, being cognizant of that distance aspect is one basic part of what greatly changes my approach in combat. Also, for new players trying out the heavier weapons like Great Sword, take note that rolling is your friend. Without rousing rolls to cancel animations, not only will the startup seem long, but you will feel open and vulnerable, for some time, after the swing. Recover much more quickly, if you roll at the end of your attack or combo. You may see that in the video here. For Great Sword, you can also use stuff like wire bug Power Sheath to quickly put your sword away, gain back all your mobility, and get a healthy boost to your weapon damage for a bit.
Longsword is always gonna be that weapon that's my really solid third favorite weapons. Like it's a really fun weapon to just break out every now and then and basically parry the world with but it's never gonna be my number 1 pick.
I've always used either the Great Sword or Long Sword but upon trying each weapon in Rise, everything feels so satisfying to use. Right now I am using Heavy Bowgun and Dual Swords which i barely touched in the past games.
So I fully wasn't expecting this to be the case as a Great Sword main, and tbh when I get to try out all the customization options I think it'll probably change back, but at least as far as the Demo it's GOT to be the SwagAxe. It just feels sooooo rewarding to use.
I know this was a thing in Iceborne, but since I haven’t played since 4 Ultimate, I am very happy the longsword spirit combo gives you the option of a badass sheathe and redraw move instead of starting your combo completely from scratch.
Only 30 seconds in and I hear LIES how dare you slander the LEGENDARY SnS like that. The SnS is our God. So powerful that Capcom had to nerf it by removing its oiley greatness. Obviously joking great video 👍👍👍
My first weapon when I started playing monster hunter (when monster hunter world came out) was the charge blade. It was my main all through the main story and I tried out others after the xenojiiva fight. When iceborne came out I went long sword. My favorites are long sword, switch ax, charge blade, dual blades and insect glaive
I’m not great at complicated weapons, so I tend to stick to things like the Greatsword, Hammer, Lance, and Insect Glaive But somehow, hunting horn went from a weapon too complicated for me to enjoy playing, to a weapon that was too simple for me to enjoy playing
I'm gonna main sword and shield but as my 2nd weapon (maybe even main) I'm gonna give hunting horn a shot. Mostly because I want to be the person who puts smiles on people's faces when I join their game
I'm usually a Hunting Horn main, that said I took that weapon 'personality' test on twitter that Capcom released and it said my true weapon is Lance. I've never given the lance a fair genuine try, but that silly test made me want to try and make that my main for this new game.
My first weapon in MH1 and MHFU. It's really fun to do big damage and stun everything, yet so frustrating to constantly miss charged attacks. If you can get the skills for crit draw and quick sheath, it will make your life 10 times easier. lol
The best weapon for you is always something that makes you feel great when you hit the monster while also not dying frequently. Ahaha It's all about the feels
I just started playing yesterday and am new to the series. I have been experimenting with a lot of theses and have been enjoying the hunting horn. I need to continue practicing, it’s a steep initial learning curve, but so fun.
Started of in Rise with the Charge blade, because it looked so cool in the demo. However I struggled to get to really grasp the weapon, which kinda became a problem for me when the monsters got tougher like the Barrioth for example. I then started looking at other weapons and after trying out Greatsword for a bit my eye fell on the Banabra bows, I still think they are one of the coolest looking weapons in the game. Thanks to those hovering pests I am now a full on Bow main. I really love the mobility it has in this game combined with the range to really keep an eye on what the monster is doing. It only became better for the further I progressed to the game as I could get more stanima skills to higher levels (Constitution/Stanima surge) to really keep the action going!
A year late, but I think I want to try bow. The game just came to Xbox and I have never tried bow but it's always interested me. It feels like it could be great with both pets distracting the monster and the extra wirebug mobility. Did you continue to use the bow? Do you have any tips for a beginner? hahaha
Also remember, not only is there no 'Best' weapon, there's no problem with having an arsenal of weapons, I.E. choosing more than one. Even my 'side' weapons (which meant weapons hunted with less often, but still knew and enjoyed alot) are getting more playtime this time around from me. Main: LS/DB/IG Side: GS/GL/CB
I always used to play Glaive, but I really enjoyed Light Blowgun in this game. The diversity in play between each weapon is crazy, and I am almost done making every weapon just so I can always have the tool I need! Currently running night owl for the moving rapid fire pierce rounds ^.^
I used Insect Glaive on MHW and I loved it. However for this game, I think I'll try different weapons but you made so many look fun so I don't know what to use
Before letting the video influence my opinion; so far my favorite weapons have been the insect glaive and the switch axe. I've tried all the weapons in the demo, but in the full game so far I've only played with those 2, light bowgun, bow, hunting horn, and long sword. Insect glaive feels the most fun, but takes a while to get the job done compared to other weapons, Switch axe feels very fluid and satisfying, and feels like it's one of the more efficient weapons timewise if I'm farming materials.
Hammer main. Wanted to use Lance as well in World but I was too far at that point. This time since it takes less material to craft weapons I'll make hammers and lances from each monster if possible.
0:21 what is that charge blade?!? Can we also take a minute to appreciate how freaking stylish the squad is looking? Like, Oh boy, I was already hype but them hits looked clean and nasty at the same time. You all are gonna make this the longest day ever getting me so hyped.
I've been trying to get into the MH games since Ultimate on the 3DS, it wasn't until Rise that it finally clicked for me and I've been having a blast with the insect glaive.

The gunlance, on the other hand, is slow, meticulous, but hits like a truck. The lance is like the defensive duelist, light on its feet, quick, agile, always in your feet, while the gunlance is the knight in full plate, slower, more patient, heavier.

Rathalos: So I took that personally...
Insect glaive is one of the best weapons to use against rathalos and rathian lol always on top of them and never getting poisoned or burned
Insect Glaive > Any flying monster.
I've always used either the Great Sword or Long Sword but upon trying each weapon in Rise, everything feels so satisfying to use. Right now I am using Heavy Bowgun and Dual Swords which i barely touched in the past games.
I love the insect glaive because you can just sic the kinsect onto your target and spam X and deal a bunch of damage.
That Levi Attack on Titan reference made me chuckle! 😂
I keep wanting to branch out to other weapons, but the play style of the greatsword speaks to my heart.
Chop.
Chop.
Shoulder check.
Only 30 seconds in and I hear LIES how dare you slander the LEGENDARY SnS like that. The SnS is our God. So powerful that Capcom had to nerf it by removing its oiley greatness.
Obviously joking great video 👍👍👍
JoCat is that you lol
My first weapon when I started playing monster hunter (when monster hunter world came out) was the charge blade. It was my main all through the main story and I tried out others after the xenojiiva fight. When iceborne came out I went long sword. My favorites are long sword, switch ax, charge blade, dual blades and insect glaive
I’m not great at complicated weapons, so I tend to stick to things like the Greatsword, Hammer, Lance, and Insect Glaive
But somehow, hunting horn went from a weapon too complicated for me to enjoy playing, to a weapon that was too simple for me to enjoy playing
4:30 Imagine being so pissed off that you'd rather use your bear hands to rip into a platypus than using the two swords you already got.
No that's because the Lance destroyed them.
I'm gonna main sword and shield but as my 2nd weapon (maybe even main) I'm gonna give hunting horn a shot. Mostly because I want to be the person who puts smiles on people's faces when I join their game
I love flying around the map with the insect glaive and wire bugs. You jump around and can jump from walls like some kinda demon
I'm usually a Hunting Horn main, that said I took that weapon 'personality' test on twitter that Capcom released and it said my true weapon is Lance. I've never given the lance a fair genuine try, but that silly test made me want to try and make that my main for this new game.
3:35 Wow valor hammer is back!! RIP every other weapon in the game for me 😁😁😁
Can't wait for your hammer runs in Rise, but you can't just ditch my precious switch axe like that 😪
@@tetsucabra4146 Ok fine, you talked me into it, Switch Axe can stay but that’s it nothing else!
I started out with the Sword and Shield, and unexpectedly kind of fell in love with the Hunting Horn...
I feel ya. I started with SnS, and now my main is the CB with both SnS and HH in second place.
My first proper venture into MH, and I'm gonna start with the Great Sword just for looks. Plus it hits hard!
My first weapon in MH1 and MHFU.
It's really fun to do big damage and stun everything, yet so frustrating to constantly miss charged attacks.
If you can get the skills for crit draw and quick sheath, it will make your life 10 times easier. lol
my favorite is the charge blade, i always enjoyed how it works even if i dont know how to fully use it yet
Never heard such a quick and nice summary of the weapon types tbh :o
you said the magic words...."Himura Kenshin" :) My HEART
I've always been a Hammer main and Horn secondary, but I'm genuinely contemplating the Glaive, Dual Blades or Funlance this go around.
i will always recommend the gunlance :)
I will always start with GS, but I love videos like this.
Can't wait for the weapons tutorial
I love the sweet sound when cracking the monsters face
The best weapon for you is always something that makes you feel great when you hit the monster while also not dying frequently. Ahaha
It's all about the feels
And this is why I dropped the glaive and picked the lance (couldn't stand aiming with the kinsect and refreshing buffs constantly).
@@milanmalfait9914 and that's why I chose the glaive in MHW lol destroy Rathalos with it. Im trying the long sword this time around.
@@crazyape515 I'm glad you're having a blast with the glaive. I just sucked at aiming and fell into the common "jump all the time" type of mistake.
@@milanmalfait9914 same for the glaive. I liked it in concept but I got irritated the bug stuff so I eventually switched to the dual blades
I chose the Hammer for that reason. I love the idea of dominating monsters with massive blows to the head, and knocking them out.
I ended up being a hunting horn main. Never saw that coming.
Wow I was searching this exactly video and it comes to me 😂
I just started playing yesterday and am new to the series. I have been experimenting with a lot of theses and have been enjoying the hunting horn. I need to continue practicing, it’s a steep initial learning curve, but so fun.
I’m going for Insect glaive, dual blades, hammer and long sword.
I was a Light bowgun for a long time...but this game has made me love the Long sword so much!
Main: LS/DB/IG
Side: GS/GL/CB
Except that's completely fale, best weapon in rise is long sword because everything else got nerfed, while the best weapons in world are the bowguns
Video : We will show all weapons so you can choose any.
Hunting Horn mains : You don't choose the Hunting Horn, the Hunting Horn chooses you.
Really like the new Zinogre charging effects, the fulgurbugs are so prominent
Lance main since first MH game on PS2. Never gonna change but still want to support Arekkz
I just popped in to hear him say "yo whats goin on guys" I started in world and this guy was a lifesaver haha
i hat how people always say bow is the easierst ranged weppon to get into , its hard af
I always used to play Glaive, but I really enjoyed Light Blowgun in this game. The diversity in play between each weapon is crazy, and I am almost done making every weapon just so I can always have the tool I need!
Currently running night owl for the moving rapid fire pierce rounds ^.^
I just wanted to watch a monster hunter video, but TH-cam needed me to know that all of existence is brought to us by Raid Shadow Legends...
I used Insect Glaive on MHW and I loved it. However for this game, I think I'll try different weapons but you made so many look fun so I don't know what to use
8:18 autotune?
Arekkz, Team Darkside, and many others are teasing me. Can't wait... can't wait
Simple: try them all out.
That seems like a very good primer, if I were a new hunter I'm sure that would have given me somewhere to start.
I like anime, but I'm not touching the longsword with a 10ft pole.
same
Before letting the video influence my opinion; so far my favorite weapons have been the insect glaive and the switch axe.
0:40
YES they added back the rathian HBG!
I'm so ready to get back into this series, gotta finally try out Bow
I AM TUROK !!!
I'm going to play all the weapons.
Same. Except the guns. Never liked these much
Been an Insect Glaive and Long Sword user for the longest time.
It’s time to diversify my weapon selection for Rise.
Damn, that levi reference is spot on
Hammer main. Wanted to use Lance as well in World but I was too far at that point. This time since it takes less material to craft weapons I'll make hammers and lances from each monster if possible.
"There's no specific best weapon"
*hunting horn gets nurfed from the demo*
Just got this game, it’s installing I’m so frickin hyped
Wait, there's 14 weapons? I thought the long sword was the only option, strange
That's how they get you
0:21 what is that charge blade?!?
Can we also take a minute to appreciate how freaking stylish the squad is looking? Like, Oh boy, I was already hype but them hits looked clean and nasty at the same time. You all are gonna make this the longest day ever getting me so hyped.
What is that Switch Axe?!?
"What weapon is charge blade for you?"
Charge blade being a favorite in world and now I couldn't use it at all in the demo and me never being able to boom stick
I've been trying to get into the MH games since Ultimate on the 3DS, it wasn't until Rise that it finally clicked for me and I've been having a blast with the insect glaive.
"There is no best weapon in this game.." Cries in LBG
Probably going to start with the dual blades. I really would like to learn the charge blade though. I love that buzz saw looking axe attack.
dual swords: "unmatched movement speed" *Laughs in HH improvement buff"
