      My top two favorite books are Ella Enchanted and The Secret Garden. I can’t think of anything I hate about them. Maybe one flaw for Secret Garden is it being sort of slow. But that is just a minor dislike to me.

    Percy Jackson is my favourite series and I adore it, but one thing I do find annoying (this is just Camp Half-blood Chronicles in general, so including the sequels, HoO and ToA) is that almost every single character either gets paired up romantically, or they have to swear to not date at all. I really wish we just had some characters who didn't end up dating simply because not every 13-18 year old (or anyone older either) is going to be doing that. I love some of the pairings with all my heart, but it just doesn't sit right with me that there apparently needs to be a reason other than "I'm not interested in anyone right now" or "I'm not interested in dating" for them to not be in a relationship. The idea of needing to swear an oath if you aren't gonna get paired up is just frustrating sometimes.
    Still obviously love the books though

    • @tezeth_1385
      @tezeth_1385 4 ปีที่แล้ว +36

      Lilla Joba don’t hate me but...it kind of feels like Leo got with Calypso just so that he has a love interest. Sorry if I offended you :(. I still absolutely love Percy Jackson too!

    • @lillajoba6710
      @lillajoba6710 4 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      @@tezeth_1385 Oh don't worry, I'm not offended at all. Leo and Calypso definitely did come out of nowhere. I don't necessarily dislike the pair, but it is kind of like we needed every main character in a relationship by the end of the series for some reason

    • @randomperson7489
      @randomperson7489 4 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      I agree: that’s why I think Percabeth is like the OTP of the series, because we saw their journey and how their relationship developed, but then again some relationships are like that, like Scarlet and Wolf from TLC, different relationships like that exist but it did feel like it (Caleo) kinda came out of nowhere (No hate or anything, this is just my personal opinion)

    • @lillajoba6710
      @lillajoba6710 4 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      @@randomperson7489 Caleo is kind of universally known as the ship that was unexpected.
      There is one pairing I adore that was a little out of nowhere, admittedly. I love Solangelo. But I think in that case the fact we didn't see them get together almost helped the pairing, because we saw quite a bit of them being together once they were and it's open to interpretation, since we don't know how long it took them to get together as it was between books. Caleo, while not bad, was just a bit random, we have a more concrete timeline, and their interactions didn't really make me love them any more, which is very different to Will and Nico.

In the book the author said that the Baudelaire parents are dead I mean when mr Poe went to the beach to tell the children the bad news, he told them that their parents have perished in a terrible fire, but according to the Netflix show, the parents are alive, I'm not sure if it's a spoiler, if it is tell me, in the first 2 books they didnt say that, but we can see the parents alive in the first 2 episodes

    Rick Riordan is probably my all time favorite author. I love Percy Jackson and I actually liked Grover. I think if I had to critique something it would be the inclusion of fandom references. I know in one of the heroes of Olympus books there’s a reference to doctor who. Though it was funny, I personally prefer a book that is able to exist outside of a set timeline so it can be a fairly modern read regardless of when the reader reads it. I think riordan set that up well with the “no technology” thing. But doctor who is a tv show that will end at some point and no longer be a relevant reference ... and it requires the use of technology so...

    I FEEL THE SAME WAY ABOUT THE "A SERIES OF UNFORTUNATE EVENTS" SERIES! I was so upset with the ending, because Daniel Handler (Lemony Snicket) left so many questions unanswered. I understand that the reason for that may have been to maintain the sense of mystery surrounding the story, and I admire the author for that, but I still want answers all the same. (Now I know how Hazel felt from TFIOS.) Also, I feel exactly the same way about the "Legend" series by Marie Lu. I adore the novels and characters so much, however June and Day always felt too mature to be fifteen. The way in which they spoke, and the mature, adult decisions they made caused them to come across as adults, and not teenagers. That being said, great video, Jesse! I love the idea of critiquing favorite books, something I'm really reluctant to do.

    Okaaaayyyy I just knew today that you also like Legend by Marie Lu and I feel giddy because she's also one of my fave authors tho I prefer Young Elites. And same sentiments with Legend and Six of Crows. Authors really need to adjust the age of these teenagers with adult-ish mindsets but I guess it was written that way to entice the Young Adult bracket. AND I agree with the fact that Six of Crows as a character driven story had a slightly dragging pace before we get to the heist and I felt like it took me a long time to finish the duology when I check how far I've read and only realize that I only finished a few pages 😅😅😅

    Favorite books (tied): SOC - slow start and magic system was confusing since I hadn’t read the shadow and bone books first, but I got it eventually. When everything went wrong in the second book I rage quit and didn’t pick it up for two weeks. That was super annoying lol.
    Cinder series - instalove in book two, and Fairest, the spin off book that tried to explain why the villain was the way she was. Like it did help me understand her more, but it also make her a less likable character, rather than a more interesting villain. It was predictable but that never really bothered me because I liked the characters and the world so much.
    Cinder isn’t for everyone, and I get that, but I recommend six of crows to literally everyone I talk books with. Absolutely love these books

    9:39 even though that happens, I like to use that a bit because then I get to make up my mind about what’s happening and where it’s going but at the same time think “why do I think this way? Would I flip my opinion if it were focused on the other character or do I really like this main character?” It’s like I’m challenging myself to a debate, but without needing to talk to anyone. (New introvert heights hahah)

    This was so fun. I love what you said about diversifying reading to get to know other types of people.
    Fave book at the moment: Memory of Babel, 3rd book in Mirror Visitor Series by Christelle Dabos. Incredible story and worldbuilding, the most sophisticated plot and details I've ever read. One complaint would be, that in especially in the 3rd book kept tense waiting a bit to much with no relief. A thing that's mean to happen takes too long, for me anyway. Love your videos, Jesse.

    Okay I also don't vibe with love triangles but I have to disagree with the romance not being important in the hunger games. The world is on fire, yes, but people still fall in love, and it's kinda nice to know that even in the midst of a revolution there is still something as beautiful as love. Hell, our world is currently on fire, but I still love with all my heart and I refuse to let anyone take that away from me. If we didn't have love would we even have the strength to rebel? It wasn't the most important aspect and was emphasised a bit too much, but I think the fact that is was there shows that even when the world is burning we are still human

    I thought I had heard that when Collins presented it to her publisher or editor or some third party. They were the ones who were like it's a YA, it needs a romance aspect. That it was also clear who she had paired Katniss with, but they wanted a love triangle so that they could push that for sales.

    Six of Crows is one of my favorite books of all time and my favorite YA fantasy novel (I'm generally an Adult Fantasy reader). The only critique I can come up with for this book however is the characters' ages. They read like 20-30 year olds, not teens, especially Kaz.

    Gonna give my opinions on the books I've also read
    Percy Jackson: I didn't vibe with Thalia and the dream descriptions are sometimes too long and detailed
    Miss Peregrine: don't love the whole Fiona thing. It's like they forgot her for 2 books and now in 5 she's suddenly very important again
    Hunger games (my favourite): I don't think the relationship between Katniss and Peeta went nice and smoothly. Like at first she hated him and suddenly they were in love? Still, it's an amazing book and I've watched the movies over 30 times each

    My favourite book of all time: Six of Crows
    Flaws, if I'm nitpicking:
    1) first chapter: I found Joost boring (then I got to the second chapter, met Kaz, and had a new all time favourite book)
    2) a few times I found the jump to backstories slowed the pacing more than I'd like (this one is 100% nitpicking though, because how else could Bardugo fit 6 backstories into a duology?)

    Can you please read this book called The Apple Tart of Hope? It is super unpopular.
    It is about a boy named Oscar Dunleavy is missing, presumed dead.
    His bike was found at sea, beyond the pier, and everyone in town has accepted this as a teenage tragedy. Except for his best friend, Meg. Oscar's kind, always cheerful, and makes the world's best apple tarts. Meg knows he isn't dead and she's going to prove it.

    I totally agree that it would’ve been really amazing to find out a lot of the secrets in ASOUE, however I honestly be that it’s still mysterious at the end because that’s just the way it’s supposed to be (🎶 it’s just how the story goes melody 🎶). However, as you said, there are other books such as The Beatrice Letters (one of my favs), The Unofficial Autobiography (this is just a fun read with a ton of Easter eggs and references that you need to look close to find), and of course there’s the All The Wrong Questions series (which follows 12 y/old Lemony Snicket in an almost abandoned city called Stain’d by The Sea, which will have a show on a Netflix sooner or later) Mr. Snicket (Daniel Handler) is one of my favorite authors. Sorry for this long comment I just thought I’d share my thoughts.

    Legend actually ended up in my DNR pile for the exact reason you stated, it was wild to see concrete reminders that they were kids when my brain has been picturing them as adults. And yeah, the instalove was the final nail in that coffin.
    Also, the six of crows duology, I have exactly one critique and that is it feels like Leigh Bardugo wrote the book and then thought "There's no way we get through this story without a death, but I really like what I wrote already" and tacked on a scene where a main character dies in a really stupid and random way.
