I wasn’t going to write anything, I typically don’t. And of course, whatever you want to read or don’t want to read is completely up to you. But I felt compelled to write, in case there are any curious readers out there that might get a lot out of Lolita. Or anyway I hope they aren’t deterred from picking up other Nabokov books. Because he is a brilliant writer. And besides this brings up a few general talking points about books; their use, power, and the subjectivity of their appraisal.
My first point is in regards to the interplay between the content (or plot if you like) of a book, and its language (or how it’s told). One can read a book and be captivated by the language, but put off by the content, and vice versa. And this isn’t universal, each reader has to find what balance between the two is suitable for them on a case by case basis. The question in the case of Lolita becomes, can an extremely well-written book offset disturbing content? And for me, personally, it does.
Lolita is one of my favourite books because the writing is so intricate, beautiful, and layered. The narration is insanely clever, by taking an educated yet biased narrator to full advantage we can see both his thoughts and motivations whilst seeing outside that view and criticizing it. And the novel isn’t a direct, sensational account of reality, but fiction interlaced with subtle metaphor, double meanings, creative wordplay. For example, one sound interpretation for the novel is that it metaphorically represents the relationship between Europe and America at the time it was written. That one metaphor shifts the entire narrative. And it’s just one of countless larger metaphors and interpretations surrounding the novel.
Yes, the content is disturbing. It’s triggering. And is certainly not for everyone.
But I would argue that sometimes avoiding the disturbing aspects of life renders them more powerful. If we aren’t aware of an issue, how can we work to resolve it?
There are some books, some media in general, that are uncomfortable to consume. Naked (Mike Leigh) is one of my favourite films, but I can barely watch it. 1984 (another of my favourite books) is very unsettling and difficult for me to reread. Wit (Margaret Edson) is an incredible play, yet even considering watching or reading it makes me verge on tears. The list goes on…
For me, consuming media isn’t just about pleasure, indulgence, and comfort. Sometimes it is, and there’s no shame in that whatsoever. But sometimes it’s about testing boundaries, questioning social constructs, catharsis, etc.
Sometimes it takes being unsettled to alter your perspective.

I also thought that I would never read Lolita, but a member of book club that I was in years ago chose it when it was her turn. The book was not as I had imagined it. I was a science major in college and always that Nabokov would be over my head because I did not enjoy the same sorts of books that my English major friends did. It was uncomfortable reading to be sure. I came away thinking that the term Lolita has been misused as she was not a deliberate seductress. She was a total victim of a pedophile. The book club member chose Lolita because she had just finished reading Reading Lolita in Tehran by Azar Nafisi. That book is one of the most thought provoking books that I have ever read. I appreciate your more educated comments on Lolita and about Nabokov.

To put it simply, a standard k-drama ( here love triangle) has basically 2 main leads, a second male lead to make the male lead jealous, and a second female lead that tries to ruin the main leads' relationship. Now, why would people end up experiencing second lead syndrome? It's because THE SECOND MALE LEAD IS, MOST OF THE TIME, A LOT NICER, CARING, AND JUST BETTER IN ALL ASPECTS COMPARED TO THE MAIN MALE LEAD. While the second male lead goes above and beyond to make the female lead happy, the main male lead can completely ignore her and not care about her at all, and somehow the female lead always chooses the meaner guy.

so I'm not sure if Jesse has read this book, but it is one of my all-time favorites and I think it hits the things he enjoys too. Akata witch by nnedi okorafor, it explores African culture, tells a fantastic magical story, as well as has some of the best descriptions/world-building I've ever seen, it isn't romance heavy and the main character has flaws, but those flaws make her stronger in many ways. It kinda hurts to say, but don't really want to read A Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. I was SO excited for it because THG is my favourite series, it's so important to me (and people don't appreciate it enough imo) and I thought we were finally gonna get answers to the questions we have, but then I was spoiled for some things and I was so disappointed. I was waiting for Suzanne Collins to come through once again but I just don't vibe with the direction she decided to take. Maybe after all these years I've read too much fanfiction, theories and also just had my own headcanons and it was all so different from what we were given that I just can't accept it as canon given what the original series is like. Dunno if that whole rambling made sense, I tend to get carried away.

5- I’m not much of a fan of Sci-fi, but I’m always willing to try a sci-fi books. Give me reeeeccccs
6- Eragon (I am so sorry, I’ll try again eventually)
7- I agree with a Wrinkle in Time, but I didn’t like the first book... I also haven’t finished the Legend trilogy or the Red Queen series, but I have the desire to eventually read the rest of them
