A love triangle is only truly bad when one character is a better person than the other and you know who the main character is going to end up with. For example, in the Hunger Games, Gale had no chance because he was more angry than Peeta and wasn't as kind. However, Cassandra Clare's Clockwork Angel series had an amazing love triangle because both men were amazing people... (not saying names because spoilers, figure everyone knows everything about Hunger Games by now)
8:14 Here's the description on the back of *The Two Princesses of Bamarre* by Gail Carson Levine: "Brave and adventurous, Meryl dreams of fighting dragons and protecting the kingdom. Shy and fearful, Addie is content to stay within the castle walls. The one thing the sisters share is their unwavering love for each other. The tables are turned, however, when plague strikes Bamarre and the Gray Death leaves Meryl fatally ill. To save her sister, Addie must set out on a dangerous quest filled with dragons, unknown magic, and death itself. The sisters' lives - and the future of the kingdom itself - hang in the balance. Can Addie find her courage in time?"
i so need more books with lonely characters who DONT end up with a huge group of friends too! not all of us want to see the "happy endings" that are just proving young readers that they need friends to be happy instead of they can make themselves happy too! people aren't for everyone and i wish that was shown in more books
Yes, there needs to be more lonely charcters! I was sitting alone at lunch like, ‘Even this character that is supposed to be lonely has a strong friend group.’ It makes you feel so helpless.
I need more books, where it is not two perfect characters falling for one another. I love seeing a story, where one od the characters is broken, devastated and lost. And the other characters helps them to heal and get threw this. Overal our partner Is someone who should make US a better person and I NEED MORE BOOKS LIKE THAT - ROMANCE OR FRIENDSHIPS
The book I would think of would be German "Die Stille meiner Worte" from Ava Reed. It's about a girl who wouldn't talk any more after the death of her twin sister and now gets into a camp with other kids dealing with hard times/backgrounds. I don't know if there's an english version though but I really liked it.
Thank you so much for telling me it’ll be alright. I really do relate to loneliness and negative voices in my head... so hearing it from one of my comfort people is very nice! Thank you, King!
I’m sure you’ve likely already read it, and it does revolve around war, but The Inheritance Cycle by Christopher Paolini focuses very heavily on dragons and the main character struggles with social interactions and the like 😌 There also isn’t a romance plot around the main characters! It’s so good.
I pretty much agree with everything you’ve said. A lot of the turn off’s for me is the predictability when it comes to books wether it be the love triangle, war torn country, strong powerful character who loves the arts. Read it too many times.
Well, if you had finished the Eragon series, you might have had your fill of dragons. The first book is kind of different, but I think that the series gets better, and I love it, and I hope that you will read the second book in the series. And also finish throne of glass, there's only one book left (thought it is a little over 900 pages).
When you brought up the lack of dragons within the YA world, I immediate thought that I would love to have more Middle Eastern to Asian region mythology. This got me thinking, I would love to see a video where you provide examples of books that do these tropes WELL. Like I always say The Infernal Devices did the love triangle trope so well no one else even needs to try, society can move past the need for love triangles. What are books/series that actually PULL OFF your most hated tropes?
I’m writing a book in which the main character is far from what I’d consider “strong” and he’s gotta find his strength along the way and I really am excited about it
Jesse! About the “why is there always a war brewing in fantasy?” I agree, I recommend looking into the “fellowship” stories, since they’re about a group of people traveling together. Like The Hobbit or Kings of the Wyld. I would say Lord of the Rings but there is a war in that series (though the focus is on traveling and the relationship of the fellowship, especially in the first book). I know you’re not a LOTR person though, but there’s a whole sub-genre of fellowship-type books which are just adventures in a fantasy world.
No offence but The Lord of the Rings series is kind of boring for me, obviously you have your own opinion. I had started to read it but didn't like it. Are the other books in the series good?

4:27 well not exactly the same but there's this series called gone I absolutely love it, and its basically about all the adults going missing and this force field and mysteries and the world of kids slowly descending into chaos and them having to deal with it its great
Totally agree with all of your points. This year I tried getting into YA books more, but I was getting frustrated seeing some of the things you mentioned. I hate the overuse of characters being into the arts and always having their "nose in a book". I understand that authors want to write an experience that may be similar to theirs, but I would love to see a character with different interests. A person can be just as deep and be into the math or science. I think its a missed opportunity to look over those different experiences.
I think when I first got into YA I loved seeing the book lover character type, but I can definitely see now that it's a bit overused. I still love it sometimes, but it just depends on how "in your face" it is about it.
I think I’ve been pretty lucky with the books I’ve picked when it comes to romance though. I’ve managed to pick some that don’t drown me in romance. There’s this series called Pivot Point by Kasie West, it has romance, but focuses more on the problem. It’s amazing. Me being a hopeless romantic who doesn’t want a relationship is what makes me read the romance books rather than adventure ones.
10:21 not a book but i came across an actually interesting love triangle through the kdrama "start-up" bc basically one of the guys in the love triangle has to pretend to be the other guy, and it all has to deal with the fact that the other guy wrote "love" letters to the girl when they were young using the other guys name. Complicated but its a cool show.
9:25 since you said this...maybe check out the selection? Yes it’s 90% romance but the dynamics between the characters (romance or not) is legendary. And there is tones of action packed sequences like when the rebels attack. And it’s about a suppressed character in society who is given a chance to speak for those who cannot speak for themselves. I wouldn’t even care if you read the first half of the book and quit. But...maybe check it out?
I agree it’s the way a trope is written and not the trope itself. I absolutely love love triangles when they’re done well but majority of them are just super obvious who is end game.
My favorite book of all time is Be Not Far From Me by Mindy McGinnis. It's so beautifully done and has a great paise. We follow our main character Ashley as she is trying to find her way back, after getting lost and injured in the middle of the smokey mountains. As she is trying to find her way home struggling, we learn about her past. I highly recommend :)
A lot of the things you mentioned is why I have come to re-appreciate classic and older novels in general, they are slow paced but well executed, well thought through with great values and you end them feeling...more satisfied? Villette, Lord of the Rings, anything by L.M.Montgomery,...etc.
Omg characters being alone is SO true. I'm 19 and dont have any friends, my one friend is busy all the time so we cant lean on each other right now. It's harder when you know people my age have lots of friends, in all the shows and books etc they have lots of friends OR they have a partner next door lmao
You should read chaos walking. It is such a good sci fi trilogy and it is so good! There is a romance but it is done in a way that you know that the characters care about each other but it isn't important and something will happen after all of the plot is resolved. It is done so well. I am obsessed with it!
Your take on wanting characters describes as weak is really interesting! I'd love to see a fantasy without a total badass lead, just someone who's scared but has to pull it together to save the day!
I just got out of school and we had a book party in the library to celebrate the end of the trimester with fellow readers and we had a raffle and I got an advanced reader's copy of windfall by Jennifer E. Smith and I thought, what a nice way to get out of school mode and into chill mode than with a new vid from Jesse and a new book!
i’m so glad you mentioned that comparisons hot take. when the gilded wolves came out everyone was comparing it to soc and i saw so many negative reviews saying how disappointed people were that they werent the exact same and it put me off reading it. well i read it this year, its one of my new favorite books, and while there are similarities to soc, that comparison really hurt the book i feel like
You giving Gibly movies as an example of fantasy stories without a war in it is so funny to me because I just saw "Howl's Moving Castle" today. It is based on a fantasy book without a war in it, but a Gibly added one in
HARD AGREE that stories, especially ones with magic at the center, are fantastic and still interesting even when they don’t lead up to a big war. That sort of fits in with “less fast-paced books” take as well for me,
I do prefer fast-paced books, but I also enjoy slow-paced books more than others do. I completely agree that slow books aren’t necessarily boring books because I have read slow books that I’ve loved in the past. But like you said, fantasy can’t really be slow, however a slow contemporary can be good. Keep up the great content, Jesse!
Does anyone actually have any book recommendations about lonely characters? Main character preferably around 18 years old , not living at home? Feel like I could do with a book like this now
Where the crawdads sing! Follows Kya from 6-20something. She IS at home, but it’s also such a love letter to nature that it makes me want to go outside haha
The Trials of Apollo follows... well, Apollo aka Lester, who was quite pathetic at the beginning he could be considered as weakling, but there was so much character development happening throughout the series, even though he may be weak as human, I love him and he is now one of my favourite book protagonists! So yeah I agree books with weaklings as main leads can be amazing too
I definitely agree with a lot of these, especially wanting more fantasy books that don't revolve around a war. Maybe that's why I like fairy tale retellings, because by definition they have fantasy plots that aren't war. But even those get old if you read too many at once. More original, non-war-related fantasy plots please! Also I may be doing very well keeping my social anxiety in check, but that does not mean I don't still want more anxious characters or at least characters that don't have obvious strong protagonist-itis. Reluctant heroes can be the best kind.
A good book with loneliness in it is Erebos, it is a great book about a secret game, it also discribes a bond with the parents and is a pretty slow paced book, but an easy read! and in my opinion, should be talked about more!
I agree with all of your points. But, I do want to point out that a great many Ghibli films do in fact deal with war and/or the fallout of war. The stories being told are mostly from outside of the direct conflict rather than inside like in most YA fantasy.
A lot of the things you mentioned that you wanted in books sounds a lot like a story I am currently working on and this video gave me my motivation back to get back to work on it
When you said weak characters i automatically thought of magnus chase! And i ADORE him specifically for that reason bc he is frequently described as shrieking and decidedly behaving NOT like the typical "strong lead" 😅 hea so hilarious and decidedly human i connect so much more w him!
I want more books with amazing friendships that don’t turn into a romance. Don’t get me wrong, I love a healthy romance (especially the healthy part), but friends are awesome, especially best friends who make duos or trios or such that are purely platonic through and through.

Me being a hopeless romantic who doesn’t want a relationship is what makes me read the romance books rather than adventure ones.
Sometimes I wonder when I'll grow out of YA
I don't think I'll ever grow out of it, but I'll become more critical of it overtime.
@@jessethereader that makes sense! Let's all do that. 😂❤️
“Where all my dragons at”
*pushes Burn by Patrick Ness across the table*
Omg I can finally see your Manga shelves in the back!!!
Jesse's videos are literally the only thing keeping me sane during lockdown
I was doing a math homework. Jesse posted. I YEETED math. :)
Lol same but for science
The lonely part hit me hard enough to make cry laughing
I agree it’s the way a trope is written and not the trope itself. I absolutely love love triangles when they’re done well but majority of them are just super obvious who is end game.
Rebel Rose actually sounds so good!
Oh My God. I need that YA Parents on an island book. Someone write it!
Why is it I find your videos the best thing in the universe
Yessss! I need that ya parent book
Jesse this video is one of the most EPIC videos according to me! U just read every single YA reader's mind and I loved that! awesomeee videos
Feel like I could do with a book like this now
would love to know as well!
@@jessethereader Erebos is a good book, it is about a boy around 16 years, but he does live with his parents and goes into his lonely phase
So yeah I agree books with weaklings as main leads can be amazing too
omg I agree on EVERYTHING! especially the thing about knowing exactly what characters will end up together right away. It drives me insane.
Your channel is one of the very best! Thank you for making my week so much better by posting a new video :)
Yessss!!!and Sally is a Queen👸👑
YASSSS sometimes slow paced books are the best you can really soak up the universe
Jesse if you want more slow-paced books, read Mistborn!!!
Reluctant heroes can be the best kind.
without romance how would readwithcindy have any books over 1 star all the stars come from the seggs scenes
Reading whiplash is the only kind of whiplash I can tolerate.
I'm loving this sassy and passionate side of jesse
Haha! Thank you!
The Last Namsara is a great series that has dragons!! I completely reccomend it and loved reading it :)
The first book *chefs kiss*
THE WAR THING EXACTLY, like i need a full on adventure without the build up to a war or revolution.
I want more books with amazing friendships that don’t turn into a romance. Don’t get me wrong, I love a healthy romance (especially the healthy part), but friends are awesome, especially best friends who make duos or trios or such that are purely platonic through and through.
