We had (had to pay 100% up front of over £11,000) 3 sets of aluminium 3 metre wide bi-fold doors installed in our extension, we gave them measurements of openings, they said they measure themselves to prevent mistakes. The doors came the wrong size, , then the last set came too short, missing locks and keys, installed using a clear silicone sealant around the frame showing all the coloured wedges, then the door seals were all binding, there were door seals cut too short, the locking mechanisms were too tight, screws missing in guides, screws that were fitted were stripped threads. The sills were the main problem, we gave them the measurements of floor height like you did, they f----d the height and we have a 10mm high sill which is a pain, nobody was interested. Great video and you share the same anxiety I do about my level threshold. no one seems to have either the knowledge or experience to have any confidence with level thresholds. Particularly the slotted drains needed on the outside above dpc. It would make a great video to evaporate the mystique with this issue in relation to building control and mitigation of moisture away from bifold/sliding doors and brickwork beneath. Please please please produce this video.... I’m sure you’ll get a million views 🎉🎉 In the meantime keep up the good work you do on all fronts
Interesting comment, never trust anyone always check your self. Problem is if you are Joe (not a builder) Public how do you do that? I follow a number of channels where price, what you should charge etc comes up. How do people make an informed choice if you don’t know what you are looking for? Even yourself, bet the guys who did that job lifestyle were not the cheapest, yet caused you a massive headache and number of hours to correct the work Really enjoy the content, keep up the good work Robin and you do. Nice to see people do things well and care!
Did you check the low E was on the correct side, I would also advise packers on both jambs. This will keep the glass aligned with no tilt and makes forcing the door more difficult.
Little tip always make sure the packers are the same depth as the glass because if u dont get the packer under both pains of glass will cause a crack. Always check the bi folds have track drainage as alot dont so you have to drill face drainage in yourself. To allow the water to run out of the track onto the cill Also with the gaskett spray glass cleaner on the glass wen ure pushing the gaskett in helps it to pop in much easier. And also wen glazing always place a 2mm packer on the bottom then pack the top then pack the 2 sides as you are able to get a few more mm in lift if required. Hope this also helps.
All sealed units shatter again if a packer is not plaiced under both pains i have seen many doors. Bi folds. Patio doors. Conservatory doors front doors with cracks in the corners due to incorrect packing
When we `heal and toe` our doors, once they are in the correct position we also pack the stiles as sometimes when your knocking in the beads the glass can move slightly and you can lose the parallel line of the gasket to the frame on the stiles.
Care and pride Roger, it the 2 things that make a man a proper tradesman ... Would of expected them more likely been 10mm short so had wiggle room . Was a right cockup and no idea how they measure any door fitment well if don't know the sill measures :-/ anyway you put it right, serious ballache but you more more man and more knowledge because of it ... Keep up the good work 👍
Things may of changed i worked for a double glazing firm , bricklayer building the conservatory bases but like most good tradesmen we learn other trades over the years and we keep learning ,if we work on a private house ,,say ,,, maybe we are installing double glazing ,,it could be on an extension we need building control to check our work , with double glazing firms the window fitters may not be a trade person and he or she do not need to have their worked checked by building control because the company is fensa registered , what this means is the company maybe,be approved installer but it does not mean the the people who work for them are, The window installer may not understand about damp barriers even lintels ,
I fit Bi folds quite often, tip for getting gasket in is use the glazing paddle between the glass and the bead and space a couple of 5mm packers inbetween, if the glass has integral blinds then can usually only use a 3mm packer, sweat and a few choice words my be needed
That's a good idea for uPVC but you shouldn't need it for aluminium. If you do pack between the glass and lock remember to use a low or zero modulus silicone which won't eat away at the glass unit sealant. Also, if you do pack between the lock and glass then pack between the glass and plastic on the hinge side as well.
Hi I’m looking for some bi folds doors with your experience is there a particular company you would recommend I’m not looking for cheap doors I’m looking for a high quality and well made product . Love your channel Many thanks Darren
Brilliant follow up and explanation about the glazing being used to transfer the load Roger 👍 I remember when you first talked about moving the lintel, it was beyond fair play. Be interested to know how you packed under the sill?
Try wedging a 2/3mm packer in while you put the gasket in, it helps keep the gap open between the glass an bead while you push the gasket in an just work you way along each bead, works for me mate.
Dave hill no he used the glass spatula that you have to keep taking out an an moving it, you can just slide a Packer along as you go. Both the Same principle.
@@sphendoozy6938 I ve fitted a few of these and ally windows and never seen the gasket go in so easy, used a spacer as you say soapy water and the spatula to push the gasket in. I'am not a window fitter by the way, but have two sons, so somedays a window, soffit, facia guy and somedays a plumbers mate.
I hate having trusted another "trade" with something, then having to redo a job myself, because they've ballsed it up. Recently been working on a job with contractors i've never used ( clients choice ) and the sparky drill straight through a 4" wall 4 times where the other side we'd had been just plastered and finished and had a 'window fitter' go through a ceiling one weekend, all of which we had to arrange to get repaired. Thats why i stick to people we know and trust, with quality workmanship.
And thats where we also have issue on who to hire. Not being in the trade and not knowing who to trust. Although guess like a lot of work. I'm in IT and a trust worthy tech but there are a lot of IT techs out there who'd rip you off.
Well done ! thanks for sharing . I have the same problem with my aluminium 3 pane bi fold doors and I got lots of condensation and it gets moulded all around the frame of the wall. Like you I don’t trust anyone wish I could do it myself . Paid for good product but workmanship is rubbish .
Never trust anyone. Had a puncture the other day and yes you’ve guessed it the spare was the wrong wheel for the van. Brought from a dealer but of corse just out of warranty. Excellent videos thanks.
I am dead chuffed for you, and your client it all worked out in the end Rodger, But it must have cost overall a small fortune, in time sweat, and some cash, to raise the lintels,i have never heard of such a thing,, you really are a hero to the trade.
Powder coated flat aluminium bar stuck to the inside of the frame it can be set to the exact height required for floor finish . works for some scenarios where the doors were mesured incorrectly .
They so heavily regulate now they want everything signed off through building control, but this is one reason why I prefer to do things myself... firstly I learn new skills when I read into how things should be done and talk to people giving me a broader skill set. But also it allows me to take my time, do things to a higher standard which I’m happy with, and put some care and attention into the work I do. I’m in the trade myself but often find it difficult to find tradesman who don’t do more than bare minimum and often I’m unhappy with the work carried out. Problem is getting other people in is it’s rush rush rush to complete the job in order to get onto next job, and often take the easy route to get the job done as quick and hassle free as possible. Prime example is if I’m laying tv cables, I stick them under the floor or in the loft, but likes of Virgin Media, sky and even many aerial installers... but particularly the prior 2 won’t even enter lofts let alone lift floorboards. Problem is though they want a paper trail all the time and things signing off through building control. Yet this as demonstrated by this bifold door installation shows that when it is signed off often it’s still no guarantee of decent workmanship.
When i moved into my current house it had new double UPVC doors and the locking on them was an absolute nightmare. Snapped a key in the lock in the first week and finally managed to get them open. I had to adjust pretty much every single thing on them to get them to work properly. I think most of these places literally chuck the doors in and cant be arsed with making sure they are right. I could see daylight through the top of mine when they were closed.....
They take a lot of setting up to be perfect. I fit a lot of multi points in the wooden doors I make and often set up of the lock can take longer than the actual door install.
Nice job roger. I feel your pain I've worked in double glazing for 18 years no one can ever get a door hight right. I see this fuck up at least twice a month.
Completely agree I see a lot of people spending so much time adjusting locks and keeps and most the time it’s down to lazy people that can’t be arsed to glaze things right. I hate to say I work with these people 😩
by the way what is that face/image that appears in the rear window, (top right of the screen) at around 20:21 when the end music starts playing? Its a but freaky lol xD
Hey roger, i would love to see a video on how you store your tools. I have so many varied tools for all kinds of jobs, may use some of them once every 5 years. But i struggle to find them at that time. Do you have a system or some tips to share?
It is so sad that so many trades really don't give a damn about the job they are on. I have to say I was a bit shocked to see your video. I thought that folding door specialists might have actually tried to open the doors once they had fitted them. Presumably they would have fouled somewhere. Thanks for the lesson. You are a talented guy with the skills to put it across very well. Now about my cylinder aquastat.........
I did ask and I was even willing to pay for one of them to help me but they didn't return my call. As it was the tricky part was clicking those beads back in. I am glad I persisted with it, I hate having to ask people to rescue me.

I like the fact that you are "old school" Roger, we hardly out source any work on contracting as they just don't care, I will do a job a different way if I know it will last 30yrs not 15. in our job anyone can make a mistake, it takes a tradesman to get over it! the guy on the patio behind you could have offered you a beer!!
Well done Roger glad you showed the toe and heal way of weight transfer of the glass have watched some on hear who don`t explain this in there videos and yes there are still lots of duff so called tradesmen out there who just don`t come back, thing is they get payed? whats all that about l don`t take any money until the job is complete and the customer is happy don`t get me wrong there are a lot of tradesmen who are worth there salt and have a lot of pride in the work they do and a lot of good youngsters who will fill us old uns boots, have been putting builders work right for 35 yrs so have seen many foul ups some big named company`s who should know better as well, great video well worth the watch
The old saying goes....."We do everything right....because we do it TWICE " . Technicians hate doing FOLLOW-UP jobs from another tech because it takes twice as long to find out where the first worker screwed up . Thanks for the video. We can always appreciate ways to learn CORRECTLY. JwgK
Great job Roger! That's how things should be done! Cheers.
Welldone Roger I would of been spitting feathers over that, you hit the nail on head when you said it wasn't that your better it's just that you care more,I'm a carpenter from sheppey and I tend to watch more furniture making and shop projects than building,But I simply love this channel your a great bloke welldone and all the while you can keep it up.
Nice one roger window fitters always in such a rush
Be good to see you do more about windows and doors, a big part of any building, but something that gets overlooked, when it comes to installer skill sets and best practices.
And I speak as someone with 40+ years in the window industry.
fantastic learning ... and understanding of pic doors & Glazing .. great stuff
I’m sure you’ll get a million views 🎉🎉
In the meantime keep up the good work you do on all fronts
We are going to do something on it for sure.
Interesting comment, never trust anyone always check your self. Problem is if you are Joe (not a builder) Public how do you do that? I follow a number of channels where price, what you should charge etc comes up. How do people make an informed choice if you don’t know what you are looking for? Even yourself, bet the guys who did that job lifestyle were not the cheapest, yet caused you a massive headache and number of hours to correct the work
Really enjoy the content, keep up the good work Robin and you do. Nice to see people do things well and care!
Great work Roger, I feel you would talk and act exactly the same way even if you weren’t filming for a TH-cam vid 😂
Good work and attitude Rodger.
Saw this video when it came out. Bloody glad I remembered seeing it today, helped me cure a sagging door in no time. Thank you Roger. :)
That is great. Little things like having a door that opens and closes properly can be disproportionately satisfying. The Japanese have a word for it.
Well done! Thinking man's builder. A very rare animal these days.
Well done Roger old chap! 👍🏼
Exactly what my dear old dad said to me. Great video as usual.
To allow the water to run out of the track onto the cill
Also with the gaskett spray glass cleaner on the glass wen ure pushing the gaskett in helps it to pop in much easier. And also wen glazing always place a 2mm packer on the bottom then pack the top then pack the 2 sides as you are able to get a few more mm in lift if required. Hope this also helps.
Would like to see toughened glass crack and not shatter, lam cracks like a bitch though.
Toughned glass cracks easier than normal glass. tougned is stronger from the face but not the corners
@@jayglover74 toughened doesn't crack it shatters.
I can assure you it does
All sealed units shatter again if a packer is not plaiced under both pains i have seen many doors.
Yes I should have mentioned that. I did it once I was happy but forgot to say so.
Yep. Like I say to my missus. I am perfectly capable of stuffing it up myself. I don't need to pay someone to do it for me.
very informative
Care and pride Roger, it the 2 things that make a man a proper tradesman ...
Would of expected them more likely been 10mm short so had wiggle room .
Was a right cockup and no idea how they measure any door fitment well if don't know the sill measures :-/
anyway you put it right, serious ballache but you more more man and more knowledge because of it ...
Keep up the good work 👍
Too short would have been great
Keep up the great work - helpful and insightful content Roger. 👍🏽
Things may of changed i worked for a double glazing firm , bricklayer building the conservatory bases but like most good tradesmen we learn other trades over the years and we keep learning ,if we work on a private house ,,say ,,, maybe we are installing double glazing ,,it could be on an extension we need building control to check our work , with double glazing firms the window fitters may not be a trade person and he or she do not need to have their worked checked by building control because the company is fensa registered , what this means is the company maybe,be approved installer but it does not mean the the people who work for them are, The window installer may not understand about damp barriers even lintels ,
That is a good observation
I fit Bi folds quite often, tip for getting gasket in is use the glazing paddle between the glass and the bead and space a couple of 5mm packers inbetween, if the glass has integral blinds then can usually only use a 3mm packer, sweat and a few choice words my be needed
Gotta love the integral blinds. Especially when they fail and you need to change the glass
It's also good practice to pack out the area between the lock and the glass. Can help with the locking mechanism. Especially on PVCU doors.
Good tip. I think once you have it set right there is no harm in putting in more packers.
Mike Clewlow good advice , helps stop the tea-leafs spreading the rollers away from the keeps
Love your channel
Many thanks
Darren
Brilliant follow up and explanation about the glazing being used to transfer the load Roger 👍 I remember when you first talked about moving the lintel, it was beyond fair play. Be interested to know how you packed under the sill?
Hi Chris I put in a slip course of cut bricks
@@SkillBuilder Hi Roger, ah I thought so, cheers for saying!
Brilliant channel
Try wedging a 2/3mm packer in while you put the gasket in, it helps keep the gap open between the glass an bead while you push the gasket in an just work you way along each bead, works for me mate.
Good idea, it would have been great to have a decent window fitter there to guide me.
Tip for you - use a timber wedge instead will make it a lot easier
Didn't Roger say and do this in the video?
Probably the first fitters were O'Reilly's men
Haha. You orelly men!
@@stuart.barkley ...lick o paint...half an hour
That would be the big hairy orangutan 😉
" Lick o paint , lick o paint , job done mr fawlty "
Great tips roger, especially the packers
Never trust anyone. Had a puncture the other day and yes you’ve guessed it the spare was the wrong wheel for the van. Brought from a dealer but of corse just out of warranty. Excellent videos thanks.
Great channel, love it. How did you remove the ally beads?
Once you pull out the rubber gasket the ally beads almost fall out
No one expects miracles but everyone must do a good job for it to be a brilliant job in the end!
The thing about Roger is that he cares about it. And he's got a lovely tool.
I know he's wearing shorts but I couldn't see his tool.
I am dead chuffed for you, and your client it all worked out in the end Rodger, But it must have cost overall a small fortune, in time sweat, and some cash, to raise the lintels,i have never heard of such a thing,, you really are a hero to the trade.
But safe to say, you won't busing them again.
Good problem solving though, even if it was totally unavoidable by other parties.
Any work with a civils component always has these issues, having a backup plan in mind always helps.
Powder coated flat aluminium bar stuck to the inside of the frame it can be set to the exact height required for floor finish . works for some scenarios where the doors were mesured incorrectly .
Cheap and easy to do
I still think it was his mattress with the £20s 😂 😂 😂
I fit a lot of multi points in the wooden doors I make and often set up of the lock can take longer than the actual door install.
what suction pads are they?
Good work
Glad everything has turned out ok👍. Looked like a bit of graft. You probably needed a biscuit after lifting that lintle.
The biggest problem was deciding what to do. I couldn't leave it.
Nice job roger. I feel your pain I've worked in double glazing for 18 years no one can ever get a door hight right. I see this fuck up at least twice a month.
Doing locksmith work I would say around 50% of lock mechanism failure is down to doors being packed like a fixed pane.
Completely agree I see a lot of people spending so much time adjusting locks and keeps and most the time it’s down to lazy people that can’t be arsed to glaze things right. I hate to say I work with these people 😩
great video. what type of flooring did you lay? is it laminate or LVT?
Palio LVT
@@SkillBuilder is that the stick down type of the click together system?
by the way what is that face/image that appears in the rear window, (top right of the screen) at around 20:21 when the end music starts playing? Its a but freaky lol xD
Hey roger, i would love to see a video on how you store your tools. I have so many varied tools for all kinds of jobs, may use some of them once every 5 years. But i struggle to find them at that time. Do you have a system or some tips to share?
lol I bet you would like to see where he stores his tools 'eh Pikey Dan.
Try bohle triples glass suckers this what we use when fitting glass. much better then the pump ones
Nice job in the end Roger! To achieve the level threshold on the outside does the decking overhang the cill or butt up to it?
The deck sails onto the cill and there is a drain because the underside is a dry storage area for bikes and lawnmower etc.
Good stuff
Great problem solving..
Hello from serbia can you tell me what is in quality deference between
Bifold Aluminium door upper hinges.
And lower hinges what is beter.
"Door fitters wanted - no John Waynes need apply". We have to feel blessed they dont think they're engineers, building planes, trains etc!
Good video. Very interesting about the toe-ing and heel-ing. Must admit I'd ask the fitters to come back to at least help rebuild the door
I did ask and I was even willing to pay for one of them to help me but they didn't return my call. As it was the tricky part was clicking those beads back in. I am glad I persisted with it, I hate having to ask people to rescue me.
Cowboys springs to mind
It’s virtually impossible to get anything done properly these days
Is this your own gaff then? Not nice for you but heartening that even pros like yourself have to deal with botched building works. We've had a string of cowboys through our house!
