Patience, precision and perfection! This guy really inspires me. Too many tradesmen rushing from start to finish, when actually as this video shows you, spending time on the setup can save a lot of time in the middle and end of a job... also making a job look excellent.

Imagine being his apprentice it’s my dream at 18 so hard to find now, nice job though
Edit 9 months later - still had no luck finding an apprenticeship but now have my own van and 75% of my tools needed. I’m learning a lot on the job and also through TH-cam. It’s my goal to be a professional. Still a shame I couldn’t find a apprenticeship. Thanks

A joy to watch. The explanations and reasoning for every detail are priceless. Careful planning and consideration and preparation are so often underrated because ""you're not cutting or nailing anything", to the point that I feel compelled to explain beforehand: all the time spent planning and scheming, benefits progress down the line as well as the final result.

I just felt the need to say to you how right you are to take notice of the tinnitus, have had it for quite a few years now,it gets worse if you stressed i don,t know why but for me it's very obvious, and trying to get a good night sleep is quite a battle I sleep the radio on all night and for me, that helps, My problems started after 4 years in a factory making uPVC windows, the router for the locks screams at you and even though I wore earplugs and a headset,it just suddenly creeps up on you, Yes I am 72 now, but thank you for pointing this out to try and prevent some other guys getting it, When i walk about even today and see the number of builders not wearing protection,i sometimes go up and mention it,.

This guy not only knows what he's doing, but also does his best to make the job perfect - none of the "the customer won't ever notice" stuff you see from others and no safety shortcuts either. I cringe at some of the things I see on these videos. Yesterday, I watched one in which the person giving a lesson held a bit of wood down on the bench with one hand, whilst he chiseled a rebate into the end, with the chisel pointing straight at his hand that was inches away.

    Great video! A couple of questions;
    - Don't you need a vent at the top of the cladding to aid ventilation? You already have the perforated closer at the bottom which is great but typically you'd need the air to be able to circulate around the cladding.
    - Those blue battens are 25/50 and since you use them on the wide side you have 25mm gap. Recommended batten size for cladding is 32mm or more. Has that never been a problem for you in the past?

Watching a master craftsman at work Robin you are awesome , I have always worn ear defenders, however I have tinnitus and this was probably caused by plane spotting in my youth 50 years ago and going to discos I am now 62. I have now got some IsoTunes ear phones which go into the ear and connect to my phone. Beethoven is supposed to have suffered from tinnitus probably because of being next to the orchestra the amount of people I see on site who don't wear ear protection is probably 4 out of 5 workers.

ThermoWood® is produced by heat treating Finnish grown pine and spruce to temperatures in excess of 200 degrees centigrade. During the heat treatment, chemical and structural changes occur within the timber which alter and improve some of its basic characteristics. The resulting product is an altogether more durable and stable timber, an ideal cladding material for use in exposed areas such as external walls.

Hi Robin - we have had a concrete block extension built and I;ve got PP to go with horizontal boards - I'll probably go with larch and paint them black with Barn Paint or similar. It's quite a big extension and will form our major living area. What would your advice be on batons and fixings for these and my main question is would I need a vapour control sheet on the blocks pre batons? Ive been told not to put a membrane on the building?

The expansion gap you leave top to bottom to allow for movement, but what happens side to side? It has to be tight to look good but what if it expands? Thanks for all the great information you're giving out

Timber generally only expands in its width and pretty much never in its length, and it's only climactic change during the year that will affect it so start with a stable product and get the allowance for the expansion right and you will have no problem at all, great question many thanks

Yeah, hearing. I even wear protection when running shop vacs and the regular vacuum cleaner. Cladding looks great.

Nice work Robin. Do you think 18g Brad nails will be strong enough? Milwaukee new line in Brad nailer only do the 18g and not the 16g which I find strange.

I use the 18gauge with the polymer adhesive and the 16 gauge for the main cladding fixings great observation mate

Could you tell me the name of the vent strip and where you bought it from. I will be doing a wooden bathroom extension in the summer and have been looking for vent strips. Thank you.

Is that silver stuff externally installed PIR insulation? If so did you screw/glue it directly onto the OSB with no gaps or any type of wrap between them? Thanks.

Hi Martin, I don't see why not, it's all about the main frame structure, just think that through and I would imagine that it should work, maybe send me a sketch on Instagram and I will take a look

Do you leave room for the wood to work and are the nails rvs so they don’t cause wood rotting in time? Or is this a “treated” wood type that isn’t affected by this, if so how is it called? Really love this show (y)

Hi Robin, is that a 16 gauge nail gun that you’re using. I’m planning on building a cabin very soon and thinking of using rebated feather edge cladding would a 16-18ga nailer with stainless steel nails be the way to go? Thanks Rob

When you're pinning the siding to the battens, is there any trick to making sure you're nail line is plumb and hitting the centers of the battens? Do you just eye it?
