There is a reason the citizens of actual Detroit demanded a statue of Robocop be created and placed somewhere in the city. When they realized how much attention the Rocky statue gave to Philadelphia, they spoke up about their own iconic cinematic hero and got it done.
You said got it done!??? So there is a RoboCop Statue in the city of Detroit? Well, guess I gotta plan a road trip for Detroit next year, I was unaware of this.
They should have one in Dallas as well bc that's where it was filmed!

Ray's expression here is genuinely one of absolute horror.

Paul Verhoeven said in interviews that he was really surprised that virtually no one anywhere got the satire in this film when it came out. And he was right, at the time it was percieved and revered in the cocaine-fueled, macho tone that it was told, fully unironically. He went much more heavy-handed with satire in *Starship Troopers* (1997).
Giving Starship Troopers that _extra_ Over The Top it needed. 😁
And yet wildly, a lot of people in the 90s STILL somehow missed the satire in Starship Troopers! Like, I remember tons of people (even critics!) talking about the movie like it was a straightforward military action shoot-em-up. Sighhhh
Robocop satire presents much more deliberately than that of Starship Troopers though; I’d argue Verhoeven uses more range of subtlety and bombast in ‘97

Americans often miss satire; we see this over and over again. We just take stuff at face value 🙄
My dad was actually in this movie! He was in a couple scenes at the beginning when Murphy first walks in to the locker room. He’s the guy in the grey sweater that walks past the screen then again in the background when they are talking about the strike. So weird seeing my dad on reel rejects 😂

@@happyapple4269 I don’t think so. He may have but it was so long ago. I was probably 6 or 7 years old at the time so it’s hard to remember. I know he did a bunch of tv shows and commercials but Robocop was his only big movie.

This movie predicted the future. It's an absolute masterpiece of filmmaking.

The censors at Orion were constantly horrified at all the disgusting/gory scenes in the movie while originally making Robocop, and when they saw the Toxic Waste Man getting, uh, wasted, they immediately demanded the scene to be cut, at which point the movie studio leadership put down their fist and said there's NO WAY they'd cut the scene which got the biggest reaction out of the test audience... lol
So to think the Toxic Waste Man got saved by (greedy!) corporate suits is hilarious satire purely in line of the rest of the movie in of itself! ;)

I LOVE this reaction. Watching you guys discover how brilliant this film is hiding under such garish genre trappings is such a joy. This is what all science fiction should strive for.
I love how good science fiction has the social commentary speaking truth to power. 'Alien' comes to mind with the similar theme of corporate greed and profit over people.
Fun Facts Time: The movie is set in Detroit, but was shot in Austin in Texas, because there were a lot of futuristic looking buildings there. They were also shooting in mid-summer, so spare a thought for poor Peter Weller, in the Robocop suit, which was built mostly out of fiberglass and foam rubber, meaning he lost about half his bodyweight sweating with the suit on. Later versions of the suit had a built in fan and there was a special rest area for Weller, with heavy air conditioning, so he wouldn't just drop dead of heat exhaustion.

Something that I always liked about Robocop is that amidst all the wacky satire, the movie always treats the titular character with dignity and as a tragic figure, never making fun of him. Just compare the scene where ED-209 shoots up Mr. Kinney and Murphy's death scene. Both scenes are full of gun violence and gore, but the former is filmed borderline comedic while the latter is completely serious and dark in tone.

I love Paul Verhoeven’s cameo in this. When Robocop arrests Leon Nash in the night club, he kicks Robocop in the groin area. They cut to a shot of a guy with glasses shaking his fists up and down. That is the director.

Saw this in the movies in my teens. It was such an exciting experience. The entire theater was completely invested, laughing, cheering, at the end we gave it a standing ovation.

Coy mentioning Frank Miller without realizing he co-wrote RoboCop II and did the story was crazy! His RoboCop vs The Terminator comic with Walt Simonson on art is awesome.
Don't forget how much the story device of inserting the media was first used in Dark Knight Returns.

@@Xonslaught1 Frank Miller wrote the script for Robocop 2 - but due to the I think writers strike they butchered his work into Robocop 2 & 3. Also note - Batman 1989 - notice the disconnect between where the Joker got $20 million to throw at the crowd? Same issue - writer Sam Hamm's script was cut up and they removed the whole plot of Joker getting the cash.
I realized a couple of months ago that OCP set Murphy up by putting him in a high-risk posting in the hopes that he would be made available for the Robocop program.
Welcome to the Robocop club fellas! One of the best 80's action flicks ever made imo! And i would also go as far as considering this movie a cyberpunk genre movie.
I saw this when I was a little kid. The murder scene of Murphy really scared me as a kid. Like how sadistic it was, how they were laughing. I was like "why are they so mean?!😢"

So It's ok to show the Slaughter of Murphy a human but ED-209 a giant robot gets blocked, how the hell does that make any sense, Great reaction though, Robocop 2 is a good movie too although for me not as good as the first and the less said about the third, TV series and the reboot the better.

And I'm commenting this here so it's easier to access, though I know probably you won't read it, but Coy Jandreau mentioned he would love to read or watch some commentary and essays on RoboCop and I can suggest you Fact Fiend's videos, Karl Smallwood, creator of Fact Fiend is the biggest RoboCop nerd ever and has many videos on the topic, some have been blocked or demonitized and so taken down by them unfortunately but they're great and I believe either in his personal channel or "Behind the facts" or "Fact Fiend Raw" or one of their channels they have a commentary watch along either one or two just for the first RoboCop movie and it's all great, you should totally watch them in your spare time, besides Fact Fiend is one of the greatest channels TH-cam has to offer, besides Reel Rejects of course.
@@Terranova667 Yeah, RoboCop 2 is not great by any measure but sure is a cool movie, nothing compared to the first one but even without the nostalgia tinted glasses is a cool 80s film.
This film is more topical in this era, then when it originally came out. Just like Starship Troopers, Paul Verhoeven likes to put social and political commentary either subtly, or in your face to convey the times. He's one of the best at doing this, while making a kick-ass film in the process.

I grew up in the 80s and 90s, and watching two grown men that look at least 30 not having seen Robocop....makes me feel so OLD.

The reveal scene with the excited cops mirrors the audience. Much like Reaction videos we watch like this mirrors the excitement of the viewers.
If no one's pointed it out yet, you're actually watching the Directors Cut which added 60 seconds of gore. The Kenny/Ed 209 is extended, and that amazing pan around Murphy when Boddicker shoots his brains out was also originally cut. This is my preferred method of watching this amazing movie.

This is a classic movie. One of Verhoeven’s best satires. This movie skewers 80s culture perfectly, and some of the themes are still relevant today
From a cinematic standpoint this movie was absolutely brilliant. The cinematography, the writing, the visual effects, this film was an absolute masterpiece that was sadly pushed back to cult fandom.

Glad you guys liked it! I was born in '72 so this was one of the 80's greats for me, along with T2 and another underrated movie called F/X (1986).

Robocop is one of the Paul Verhovens sci-fi trilogy masterpieces with Total Recall and Starship Troopers.
As a kid, I loved this movie with all the action, blood and sci-fi! I didn't understand the underlying messages until I got older. This movie is a classic!
Best film of the '80s. Top-shelf action, satire, scifi, and it _nails_ the attitude of the decade. It's perfect. Saw it the day it opened and it's been a favorite since. I love introducing it to friends. And yeah, it predicted everything.
Bought this movie on VHS when I was 10. So many grown ups at the time were confused by a bunch of kids saying "I'd buy that for a dollar" 😂
It's great to see younger people appreciating and loving this movie just as much as I did growing up. Robocop is truly one of my all time favorite movies. Everything about it is perfect. Thank you guys for covering it.
I grew up watching this movie in the 80's and 90's. I knew Kurtwood Smith from this & Rambo III. He was the main reason I even checked out That 70's Show. Saw a commercial of him being mean to his neighbor and knew he was a perfect casting. This movie is so good. I am glad the younger generation is starting to get in to it.

This was one of several movies, that not in his best judgement, my dad let me watch with him as a kid in the 80's, that got me into action movies. Even to this day, it's still an awesome movie. :)
I love the POV shots and when they were used. Also, the makeup effects are awesome, but the standout is the sound design, and Peter Weller’s physicality in the suit, he was great. It’s a classic, and should be included in conversations about movies you have to watch.
The brutality scarred me back when I first watched it.

Robocop will always be a vital story. Whether a corporation brings us back from the dead with cybernetic technology or just sells our social media activity to their clients, they cannot own who we are.

Excellent, nuanced reaction and analysis! I saw this in the theater when I was 22, expecting a generic sci-fi action movie and was absolutely blown away by the social satire and the heartfelt story. Great stuff!

You should react to Robocop 2 as well. It's not quite as good as the first but it's not without its redeeming qualities, and is definitely worth a watch.

@18:00 The fact that you said this is 40 years old makes me feel old because this film and I share 1987. So now I’m almost 40 myself God what a great time to have been born. I love the First and Second Films. I don’t count the Third film but it does have a few moments of heartfelt scenes. Waiting for RoboCop Returns though… Come on Amazon!

RoboCop 2 is criminally underrated and the effects are some of the best practical of all time.
It's kinda crazy to see how real the suit in the sequel looks then see modern CG suits like iron man and how much better RoboCop 2 looks.
The only thing that detracts from Robocop 2 is the music score. Basil didn’t come back for the sequel and it was felt.

I saw RoboCop 2 three times in the theater. It was such a great Frank Miller project. My girlfriend hated me for it.
I'm surprised you two haven't watch this before, but still a blast to watch your reactions. 35 years later this movie is still awesome.
That was a phenomenal point about how the movie was able to simultaneously critique so many aspects of society without muddying the narrative or negating previous views. Most movies can get away with maybe 2-4 themes before you lose the ability to decipher what the hell they're trying to say, but this world is so well conceived that it just flowed effortlessly. Which is a fuckin miracle, honestly.
The remake gets a ton of crap, but I feel it was undeservedly panned. They managed to re-frame some of the commentary in interesting ways, made some interesting modifications to the story, and pulled it off without losing the emotional edge, so I applaud them for that. The suit is a little gimmicky and unoriginal, but that's also kind of the point -- he's a product, and the lack of imagination is emblematic of the kind of movies that are currently made. Like the 80's satire that went over the heads of the people in the 80's, I feel the modern remake of RoboCop made some ironic statements that modern audiences thought were "ironic", but for the wrong reasons.
I remember seeing Robocop for the first time when I was about 25. Man, I have never felt like I fucked up that badly before by going so long without seeing one of the best movies I would ever see. Glad you guys liked this one, the movie is so damn brilliant in so many ways. :)
A couple of fun notes about the movie:
1) This was the movie where they introduced the Ford Taurus, which were the police cars. Ford was hoping to stop producing the Crown Victoria which was the standard cop car for years, and make the Taurus the new cop car. Didn’t work, but not a bad idea by making it what you wanted it to be.
2) Peter Weller actually is Dr. Peter Weller! He has a degree in either ancient civilizations, history, or anthropology. He taught at Syracuse when my ex-gf was going there around 2006. His classes were notorious for filling up fast when people realized Robocop was going to be their professor!
3) nice catch of the satire here and realizing how accurate it was for what happened. Makes me wonder how many people saw this in the 80’s and took it as a suggestion rather than a warning.
As regards note #1, Ford's successor to the Crown Victoria police car was the Interceptor - which was built on the Taurus frame. 😄
Paul Verhoeven is a great director. Robocop, Starship Troopers, Basic Instinct, Total Recall... all controversial, all successful.
This movie is a master class in getting viewers to sympathize and relate to the characters, it’s also hilarious

Robocop is such a good movie and I'm so surprised when anyone says they haven't seen it. It excites me if I know them to be able to show it to them. Robocop is literally one of my favorite movies to this day. So good and still ahead of its time. The commentary is still relevant today.
The further you get into the movie and the more Murphy gets his humanity back you hear the robotic voice become less and less until his normal voice resurfaces
Seeing you watch it for the first time is awesome! This really is one of the best movies of the 80s and has aged really, really well. It was the first thing I saw Kurtwood Smith in, so when I started watching That 70s Show, I couldn't believe I was watching the same guy. And "Dick, you're fired!" is one of my favorite lines of dialogue of all time.
I watched Robocop before I was 11 and the image of the guy melting from the toxic waste stayed in my mind for years. One of the most disturbing things I have seen in a movie.

An inspiring tale of how a handicapped man returns to, and excels in, the workforce.
Did you guys notice any of the similarities with Dredd? Robocop began as the first adaptation of the Dredd comics. They couldn't get the ip pretty early on but there was still a lot of Dredd's helmet in the first mock up of robocop. If they went with that design the studio probably would have been sued, it was too obvious.
I saw this movie when I was eight years old in 1988. I knew then that Robocop would be one of my favorites. It was in my top five for the longest time, then top three, but as of three months ago, this movie has become my favorite movie of all time. It never gets old. A lot of people are surprised at how highly I rate this movie. Most responses are, "wow, I never expected a woman to like Robocop so much."
This is for me the most underrated action film ever made, I just love the over-the-top and comical action that’s Mortal Kombat type of unnecessarily violent.

It is the humanity of Murphy/Robocop that gives it a heart. Beyond that Verhoeven does amazing work and there is satire and commentary and humor all rolled into one. I'd buy that for a dollar.

Several actors in Robocop ended up appearing in the TV show "24". Paul McCrane played Jack Bauer's brother. Peter Weller played a major character named Christopher Henderson in season 5. The dad from that 70's show Kurtwood Smith played Senator Mayer. Ray Wise was in both.
I remember seeing Peter Weller show up in an episode of Fringe.
It was really neat.. I don't know if it was the way the character and dialogue was written, but he brought a different level of acting to the episode. It was great.
@@kaisokusekkendou1498 yup I remember that! Fringe was one of my favorite shows back when it was on air. Great cast. The first episode gets you hooked(it was directed by JJ Abrams).
Catherine Hardwicke did direct Twilight. She did not, however, direct Hurt Locker and she was also not married to James Cameron. That's Kathryn Bigelow, who also directed my current all-time favorite film, Strange Days. You might have figured that out and it just got cut, but in case you didn't :)

This is one of those movies where I always reference about having great side villains. They don't have to have many lines or even be on screen a lot, but there is a solid presents. They have character/personality (Even quotable at times). Not just some faceless/background thug. This is what I think many movies is missing.
Love your reaction to this. Took my then girlfriend to the pictures to watch this when it came out. Memories. I'd forgotten a young Miguel Ferrer was in this. Loved him as Owen Granger in NCIS Los Angeles (and Deathstroke's voice in Teen Titans). Another who died way too young.
I saw this as a kid. Loved it then ! Love it today. The original 3 movies were my childhood back then. Sadly the reboot doesn't live up to those three but thats okay =) I'm glad yall enjoyed this !!
I still enjoyed the reboot for what it was. And I loved the series back in the day as well, the live action one
The satire and social commentary in the reboot are on point, but the story is lacking severely. There are no memorable villains in it, the guy who blew him up is anonymous and even the crime boss is barely a face. One point of the movie even turns into a FPS livestream, mowing down faceless goons. The only identifiable "villain" is the guy who works for OCP who tries to stop Robocop from entering the building. The only reason why he's a "bad guy" is because he thinks Robocop isn't as good as his robots. When you think about it, it's a movie about a guy who shoots up his workplace.
This was a movie that my dad was super stoked to show me. And my reaction to it was exactly what he dreamed lol. Fun dad and son moment for us.
One of the greatest movies ever made! Enjoy.

I am not a fan of 'First time watching' vids but I've rewatched this particular video a number of times. You notice and state so much of what I love about this movie and with such genuine deference and awe, that I realise I've been missing out and having this viewing experience together with people who respond to this movie as I do. One of the best movies of the past two centuries. Pound for pound, nearly perfect. Do watch the sequel, it's completely different but it's entertaining.
This movie was so ahead of it’s time. We knew when we saw it for the first time that it was different from most of the action films of the time. The satire was so brilliant. I was 13 when this came out. It’s easy to be distracted by the violence and gore. I think that’s why people missed the satire and the commentary. This movie is amazing. Glad you guys loved it. This is a gem from the 80’s. I’d buy that for a dollar!! 😂😂

Small detail that no one seems to notice. The theme song doesn’t play until he is Robocop and in the patrol car. The structure of this film is genius.
I grew up on Robocop. I had the comics, the action figures, knew all the lore. I even have an "OCP" tattoo on my right forearm. For you guys to watch this for the first time and enjoy it is so awesome to me.
Im 40 and i saw this as a kid and loved it but for completely different reasons i love it now. I tell all mh friends to watch this masterpiece as an adult and realize how almost perfect it is. Great reaction guys.

this movie holds up SO well. one thing I appreciate more than anything is the combination of Peter Weller's amazing mime-work as robocop, along with the amazing sound effects that pair perfectly with it. the sound design in general is stellar. the sounds of the ED-209 in particular are incredibly satisfying. but yeah there's a great story Weller told in an interview (you can find it on youtube) about how he came up with the movements for robocop and it gave me a much greater respect for this movie and for his acting
also, the toxic waste guy always cracked me up because it was so over the top. I like to think that the sfx guys had a lot of fun with that whole sequence. it's almost like they had a bet with each other to see how much they could gross out the audience lol
35+ Years old and the Costume/Practical Effects, especially when it comes to Murphies unmasked head are still some of the best around.
@@warwargr3654 I love how Bottin (if I remember right) wanted to keep his face in darkness but Veerhoven overruled him on it. The two had a huge fight about it, not being over until Bottin admitted he was wrong when he saw the final version.
Love this reaction video. Robocop is a classic that has absolutely aged well, both in terms of craft and storytelling.
Fun fact the scene where he's in the hospital is actually really realistic because they brought in an actual medical staff to act out that scene
One small but great detail is how his voice is digitized at first, but as he comes back to being Murphy, his human voice without the digitization comes back.

Loved this movie as a kid. Saw it on tv and recorded it on a vhs. Watched it all the time. As an adult I rewatched streaming and saw Murphy die in full gore and it blew my mind. I had never seen that scene.
Those were the days! Recording movies on VHS whenever we got a free weekend of HBO, Cinemax, Showtime! Ahh the memories!
I'm so glad you liked this amazing classic so much. Like Greg, I saw it when I was that age too, those were the days.... But I grew up watching 1 and 2 and the cartoon.😅 Honestly, while the remake isn't THAT bad, I think I like Robocop 2 better. Obviously it doesn't come close to this near perfect movie, but I really think 2 is pretty underrated and has some good points. I think with that in mind, you guys could watch 2. Never watch 3....
