    The reason behind Brendan Fraser's character being all the way in Africa is because he was part of the Foreign Legion, a french colonial army composed almost exclusively of non Frenchmen. During that time it was a good way to disappear from the world if you were a wanted criminal or you had really bad people after you. It had and still has one of the most brutal training courses and officers in the whole world

    Jonathan is great comedic relief and a bumbling fool a lot of the times, but I genuinely love how he's always ready to throw hands for his family in this movie and the next. His character type seems like he would be more like a Beni in dire situations, but Jonathan never runs away and always come through when things go to sideways.

    • @robertphillips213
      @robertphillips213 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +22

      If it was his butt only, he'd disappear quicker than statues in the Sahara, but he obviously cared more for his family, enough to face unbelievable odds against impossible things without ever training in any type of combat.

      @Koda89 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +13

      One of the great details I loved catching upon rewatches of this film as I got more and more older vs when I saw it as a kid in cinemas was realizing that jesus christ Jonathan is a crack shot! Especially while sauced. Kinda like he has the potential to be a Rick-style badass, but he needs that liquid courage to steel his nerves first.

    • @Wanttowrite
      @Wanttowrite 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +11

      @Koda89 It's almost a throwaway line, but in his first scene, he says he hasn't been serious since 1914. The implication being his attitude is a reaction to experiencing the Great War. It would explain his gun skills and his avoidance to conflict. (This could completely be head canon on my part.)

    • @timsaylor4390
      @timsaylor4390 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      I like to think he's a ww1 veteran. When Rick gives him a look after Jonathan says "Yeah, me too" Jonathan responds with his own look like "yeah? Of course I have."

  • @Samaelthekind
    @Samaelthekind 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +42

    This was a true hit, not a cult classic. In its day, it was a blockbuster that had staying power...beloved by kids and adults. (Yes, 25 years ago we let kids watch this. It was assumed that parents would decide if their kid was able to handle it or not...and surprise, most kids not only handled it, but loved it.) This was the Brendan Fraser we knew and loved then...and while he had quite a career with this series, it WAS the injuries from this and other movies that slowly accumulated until working action roles became impossible for him. This was a tragic case of Hollywood getting as much as it could from an actor, then losing their number as soon as the relationship became complicated. Seeing Fraser make a return both as a voice actor (Doom Patrol) and a serious film actor (The Whale) has been a real joy...because even though he was once a stunningly handsome guy, he was never a slouch when it came to performing like an A lister.

    It's believed Brendan Fraser was blacklisted by Hollywood that's why he disappeared for awhile. Speaking to GQ back in 2018, Brendan gave a candid interview about stepping away from Hollywood, both willingly and unwillingly for a plethora of reasons, including accusations of a horrifying sexual assault by the former president of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, Philip Berk.

      Maybe they ditched naming him because he is a "native guy"; but still it's interesting it's one of the very rare happenings where the script sets a character so well in the story, we don't notice we don't have a big piece of his personal profile.

    Stephen Sommers did a movie before The Mummy that didn’t perform very well- but it is VERY much in the same tone of just a good time and the same humor- and Beni is in it!! It’s called Deep Rising- it’s definitely more horror centered- and it is ridiculous- but it’s a fun time. Highly recommend for those who enjoyed Beni’s character and want more of that same kind of character. Haha.

    One of my favorite movies from my childhood!
    Before Stephen Sommers, a huge fan of the original 1932 Mummy directed the project, Wes Craven, John Landis, John Carpenter, Clive Barker, Mick Garris, David Cronenberg and George Romero were considered for directing.
    Sommers was picked after his last film DEEP RISING bombed at the box office in 198.
    Before Brendan Fraser was picked to play the hero Rick O'Connell, Tom Cruise, Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, Kurt Russell, Sylvester Stallone, Matthew McConaughey and Leonardo DiCaprio were considered for the role.
