fun fact: the scene where the trio are having dinner with tommy's mom was 100% improvised. Scorcese said he didn't really want to direct his mother (who plays tommy's mom), so all he told her was to improvise and show everyone the picture.
He just told her that her character’s son and his friends were coming over. He didn’t tell her that they had a person in the trunk of the car they just killed.
Joe Pesci was phenomenal in this movie. From laughing to homicidal to laughing again in a heart. His "funny how" line is still one of my favorites in cinema.
Martin Scorsese rightfully gets a lot of praise for "Goodfellas" but this film also showed Thelma Schoonmaker's amazing editing skills. She's been Martin Scorsese's secret weapon for over fifty years.
What always struck me about this film was the "go get your shine box " line it's so illustrative of how Tommy became who he is a short weak kid bullied and looked down on who's obviously become respected through violence and refuses to go back to what he was. It explains so much about his character and the things he does.
Nicholas Pileggi wrote the book Wiseguy that 'Goodfellas' is based on and he co-wrote the screenplay for the movie with Scorsese. Pileggi was married to screenwriter Nora Ephron ("When Harry Met Sally", "Sleepless in Seattle", etc.) Ephron wrote the screenplay for the comedy movie "My Blue Heaven" about a gangster in the witness protection program living in the suburbs. Ephron's screenplay was based on some of the same research and interviews into Henry Hill that Pileggi had done. So, in a way, you could consider "My Blue Heaven" to be a sequel to "Goodfellas" chronicling what happened to Henry Hill after entering witness protection.
This movie is so classic and amazing. Even my grandma couldn’t help sharing it with me on VHS at eight years old, we used to watch it regularly at her house.
By the way, the real Henry Hill would get drunk and show up on Howard Stern's show a lot in the 90s. Definitely worth hearing his appearances, especially the first one. He was a real character. Hilarious stuff. They'd start talking at him like they were Joe Pesci and he'd start cracking up.
That's also why they say he wasn't actually there for every crime, he simply heard about them from the bar, which is most likely true. As also irl his wife was with Paulie the whole time, which would make her unlikable in the movie but also he wasn't really there he was at the bar for most of it.
The first time I saw the movie I knew it was a master class in filmmaking. Even more so after I read the book, "Wiseguy." It's a crime he didn't win the Oscar for Best Director.
So glad that Tara & Coy's first team up was for this reaction. Give us more from this team! Apparently, Pesci improvised the whole "Waddaya mean I'm funny?" scene. Also "I'm walkin' here" is Dustin Hoffman in Midnight Cowboy. Movie Geekdom!
The way you call out to people in an Italian family where everyone has the same names is usually with nicknames. At least that's how my family differentiates. It's very confusing for people outside my family. I even have to ask my mom for clarification on which cousin she's talking about sometimes 😂
As others have pointed out, the little white-haired lady is Martin Scorsese's mom, Catherine. But the guy making the sauce in the "dinner in prison" scene is his dad, Charles ("Good, but you gotta have the pork. That's the flavor.") Charles is also one of the two hit men who take out Tommy. ("And that's that.")
An absurdly interesting and rewatchable film. So much to appreciate and pick apart beyond just art the main premise. From the shots, to the stellar music choices and extraordinary acting.
It amazes me that they made another film based on Henry Hill’s time in Witness Protection, but they made it into a comedy with Steve Martin called My Blue Heaven. They took a lot of liberties but they still get a (loosely) based upon a true story tag.
I loved watching them go from I wish I was a gangsta to I'm glad I'm not a gangsta. Such a blessing to see people witness this for the first time and appreciate it again. You two are a good duo with good movie making knowledge each. I vote Gangs of New York!
Some other Martin Scorsese films you should enjoy are The Irishman, Casino, and Taxi Driver. These films, like Goodfellas, showcase Scorsese’s mastery in depicting crime, corruption, and the darker side of humanity
"What can I say? I'm a good shot." 😄 Fave scene? The scene with Scorsese's mom. I also love any scene with Ray Liotta and Paul Sorvino together, those are the best. When he has to tell him to go back to his family, that's a great scene.
If you ever watched the Animaniacs growing up, you would remember a segment with the 3 birds called Goodfeathers that mirrored the 3 main characters of this movie. Martin Scorsese's mom is the little old lady you all really liked.
Best Martin Scorsese Film, Mobster Film and one of the best films ever. Fantastic directing, writing, editing, storytelling and acting. Great reaction guys! Loved hearing your input on different things like tone, sound design, etc... I saw this movie in the theater a few weeks after it came out. No movie has stuck with me like this one. A couple of months after seeing it, I was still thinking about it. I then saw it another ten times in the theater and probably 75 times since then.
Now you need to see Casino. Goodfellas and Casino are like bookends. They belong together even though they are different stories and different characters but Joe Pesci, Robert DeNiro and Sharon Stone are brilliant in this.
Great reaction to a great film. The spiritual sequel to this film is Casino ( 1995 ) with Robert DeNiro, Joe Pesci and Sharon Stone. Also a great film and on everyone’s list of Best Scorcese Films
This reaction was so incredible, I don't even know where to start. First off, dude I'm with you 100% on your feelings about Wolf Of Wall Street. Second, Goodfellas actually is part of a sort of "trilogy": "Goodfellas", "Casino" and "The Irishman". "Casino" is a riot, it's basically "Goodfellas Goes To Vegas". Great movie. It's also part of the great lineage of masterpieces/greats he's done with De Niro: Mean Streets (1973), Taxi Driver (1976), Raging Bull (1980), The King Of Comedy (1982), this one, Cape Fear (1991) and Casino. Another must-see Scorsese is his wild 80s indie dark-comedy "After Hours" (also one of his shortest films) Amazing movie, amazing cast, don't miss that! I saw "Killers Of The Flower Moon" two days ago and it's not my fave, although I'm happy i saw it. Basically after "Casino" I felt Scorsese went down a peg and I've never been a big fan of the stuff he's done afterwards. But man oh man: "Goodfellas". What a movie. LOVED how you guys noticed so much of the cinematography, how you appreciated the acting, the humor, the script. Just a fantastic reaction. Definitely hit all those movies I just mentioned, they'll all get views I'm sure! We need way more reactions to "King Of Comedy", "After Hours" and "Raging Bull" definitely. And you'll love "Casino" if you love this one. Sharon Stone's greatest performance. "Goodfellas" is the best because it's the first but "Casino" has plenty to admire about it.
After watching Killers of the Flower Moon yesterday, I could find a lot of similarities to this movies. Although Wolf of Wall Street is my favorite Scorsese's movie, of all his filmography, Goodfellas is to me his best movie ever made. Coy, please react to Taxi Driver asap.
Best gangster movie ever made. Best Scorsese movie. Just an absolutely perfect work of art, there's absolutely nothing wrong with it. The editor is Thelma Schoonmaker, who has edited pretty much every Scorsese movie. Genius pairing.
Actually Goodfellas isn't flawless; it has errors, some of which make absolutely no sense, for example: After Billy Batts was beaten unconscious and put in the trunk of Henry's car, they all assumed Batts was dead; therefore why does Tommy borrow his mother's kitchen knife?, because as far as they knew Batts was dead so what would be the point in borrowing his mother's kitchen knife?. There are other errors in this movie too, this one is to do with the editing, where Ray Liotta's voice-over is saying that Tommy had done the worst thing killing Batts, while we are being shown Jimmy stomping on Batts. There are other errors too; nevertheless because this movie succeeds in every element of film making with great performances, great script, humor, great editing, great cinematography, great music the errors are overlooked; as it still is a Masterpiece, even though the budget for this movie was only $25,000,000; lots of movies made these days cost $500,000,000 yet are soon forgotten.
@@paulsuter5816 It is you who said on the topic "absolutely perfect work of art, there's absolutely nothing wrong with it." Which rightly warranted my response.

Awesome reaction to a classic mobster movie I remember reading online that Henry Hill passed away on 2012 but his wife is still alive I think , from what I found out him and his wife were on WP program but he kept on commiting crimes so they got expelled from the program in the early 90s , Karen Hill still goes by a new aliace and her kids to keep her and the kids safe
"Who are you, Frankie Valli or something?" Joe Pesci helped with the founding of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons and played guitar with Jimi Hendrix in a rock band. He came out with a solo album in 1968 and was working as a waiter in an Italian restaurant before being cast as De Niro's brother in Raging Bull. It launched his film career.
This was my favorite Scorsese movie and my overall favorite mobster film. Everyone played their parts to perfection (especially Pesci IMO) and then having watched documentaries later about the actual people that the film is based on makes it even more impactful.
This movie is a master piece and it will force you into a google rabbit hole to read up on Hill and the whole crew. Glad you enjoyed. It's such a great film. Direction, acting, cinematography. It's just so good.
Great reaction and commentary. So far as Scorsese, please react to more from the the approximate first half of his career, and especially those that, for whatever reasons, didn’t garner as much public praise. Perhaps my single most favorite is The King of Comedy (1982). It’s a very different role for DeNiro, and it features a very rare and excellent dramatic role by the legendary comedian Jerry Lewis. And the story itself is unique.
"I'm walkin' here!" was Dustin Hoffman in 'Midnight Cowboy'. Famously, the line was improvised as a real New York cab driver drove into the scene unexpectedly as they were shooting.
OMG, Casino! I'm sure you hear it all the time, but Deniro is a force of nature. He was great in this, but he has a much bigger part in Casino. It also happens to be a better film imo. It doesn't get the same recognition as some Scorsese classics like Mean Streets or Taxi Driver, but it's my personal favorite of his. The Last Temptation of Christ was very good too. Strange but fascinating.
Great reaction guys. If you liked this, I highly recommend "A Bronx Tale", "Casino", "The Sopranos" (HBO series), "Donnie Broscoe", and of course "The Godfather". You get a lot of the same actors. Some of those actors were the real deal in their past.
I was one of the people that said "Do you even understand film" on one video, I learnd a lot from you watching this, thank you. The observation of how each tracking shot becomes darker as a motif I dont know if I ever spotted that before.
The " Hey, I'm walkin here " quote was Dustin Hoffman in Midnight Cowboy. 🤗 This is hands down one of the greatest movies of all time. Loved the reaction!! Casino next?? ❤
I was 20 when this came out saw it a year later on VHS I wore it out it was such a great movie, sorry you waited so long. Tommy's mum from the wedding and the Hoof scene is really Martian Scorsese's mum IRL.

I watch quite a few reaction videos and happily came across yours today. Very intelligent, insightful commentary. Don't know if this has already been mentioned but the Copa sequence was a single, unedited streetcar shot. Also, "I'm salmon' here" was Dustin Hoffman as Ratso Rizzo in "Midnight Cowboy".
Very insightful analysis ! I enjoyed re-watching this w/you guys for like the 100th time since 1990 . This film was so much fun when it first came out . Every italian in NY was suddenly at least a 1/4 of a wiseguy !!
A classic definitely. I remember renting this when I was 14 and being amazed. Still not my favorite from Scorsese, but it's definitely one of his best films. Joe Pesci gives an iconic performance
❤❤ Well hello there Handsome! You two make a great pairing. I have watched Goodfellas, the Godfather, A Bronx Tale, Casino since I was little. Thanks Mom and Grandma!
As you're assembling your list of Scorsese movies to see, don't overlook 'After Hours'. One of my favorite movies and, rather rare for Scorsese, it's a comedy!
This is one of my favorite movies of all time. Getting together with my mom's family is EXACTLY like the dinner scene at the restaurant (my mom's family is from Italy)
I’ve got some Italians in my family through marriage and it’s funny to be around them at our family get togethers. They aren’t Italians cranked up to 11 like you often get in movies like this, but they definitely hover around like a 7-8😂 It’s always a good time though and the food is damn good!
@loyal_to_the_nightsky I think he's been clean almost 2 decades now and dedicated his life to helping others which in turn keeps him clean. It's horrendous that it took the loss of an innocent life to turn things around eventually, but at least he's not letting it be in vain
4:00 - some casting trivia: the wiseguy who shoves the postman in the oven is Tony Sirico, former reallife wiseguy and better known later as Paulie Walnuts from The Sopranos. Also, Tutti Cicero is played by Frank DiLeo, who was a music exec who appeared in Wayne's World as Mr Big aka Frankie Sharp, and was at the time Michael Jackson's manager.
Btw Jordan Belfort and Henry Hill are both protagonists. The protagonist isn’t determined by their morals or whether they’re good or bad, it’s just the main character.
An antagonist, is the character or characters that directly oppose the protagonist. Again, whether they’re good or bad doesn’t matter. In both films the cops were the antagonists
I love the late night dinner scene at Tommy's mothers house, and I crack up at the joke she tells every time. They were all so great in that scene, especially her. I know you can't play the music, but the sequence where they reveal all the bodies to the "Layla" solo is pure genius. Especially the freezer truck shot.

@@paulsuter5816 Irrespective of our exchanges I am definitely not angry, I'm too old to get angry over trivial things; however I did correct you; I have absolutely no hard feelings for you; I know who my enemies are, they are authorities in power. 👍
Great Reaction Coy and Tara! This movie is so great and Joe Pesci is amazing in this movie! 👍
The woman who played Joe Pesci‘s mother in this movie is actually Martin Scorsese‘s mother
Awesome reaction to a classic mobster movie
I remember reading online that Henry Hill passed away on 2012 but his wife is still alive I think , from what I found out him and his wife were on WP program but he kept on commiting crimes so they got expelled from the program in the early 90s , Karen Hill still goes by a new aliace and her kids to keep her and the kids safe
Martin Scorsese has a catalog of films on a level that few filmmakers can touch. This movie however is his masterpiece.
The thing about the restaurant entrance scene it’s not now there’s no edits. That’s a legendary single shot.
I love the focus on movie reactions. There's so many of my favorites that I'm happy to see a reaction to.
20:51 DeNiro winding his arm like he's turning a bus while kicking the guy always gets me.
25:23 Future Christopher Moltisanti from Sopranos.
Nicholas Pileggi’s(screenwriter) wife Nora Ephron wrote My Blue Heaven. My Blue Heaven is a comedic story of Henry Hill’s witness protection life.
The red light when they dig him up is supposed to symbolise the beginning of Henry's journey to hell
That was a real reaction to a cab driver who was not a member of the cast.
If you loved everyone's clothes, nothing beats De Niros wardrobe in Casino
I was 20 when this came out saw it a year later on VHS I wore it out it was such a great movie, sorry you waited so long. Tommy's mum from the wedding and the Hoof scene is really Martian Scorsese's mum IRL.
IM GLAD YOU GUYS FINALLY DID A REACTION TOGETHER(IT WAS AWESOME!) AND TO ONE OF MY FAVORITE MOVIES NO LESS. I JUST WANTED TO GIVE YOU SOME FUN FACTS THAT I KNOW ABOUT THIS MOVIE. FIRST THE LADY THAT PLAY PESCIS MOTHER IS ACTUALLY SCORCESES REAL MOTHER. ALSO "KARENS" REAL LIFE KIDS PLAY HER KIDS IN THE MOVIE WHEN HENRY GETS OUT OF JAIL. ITS NOT SCORSESE BUT YOU GUYS WOULD LOVE THE MOVIE "BLOW" STARRING JOHNNY DEPP. ITS A SIMILAR STORY AND ITS A GREAT MOVIE!!!
In my top 10 of all time for sure. Remember watching this on my laptop in my first ever apartment in LA at like 2 am. And just was amazed. Ray liota at his finest
Thelma Schoonmaker edited GoodFellas. She has been editing Scorsese’s movies for decades.
This was a great reaction coy should def watch more of the directors movies they’re masterpieces! Have a great weekend guys much respect and love from Philadelphia!
Love the varied types of movies you guys are watching. Thanks for sharing.
I can’t believe y’all finally do goodfellas. Y’all just made my day ✨😭❗️🔥
I watch quite a few reaction videos and happily came across yours today.
I would love to see Coy have his mind blown by the camera shots in citizen kane. The most ahead of its time film ever made
❤❤ Well hello there Handsome! You two make a great pairing. I have watched Goodfellas, the Godfather, A Bronx Tale, Casino since I was little. Thanks Mom and Grandma!
Thanks!
My mom's lives not far from the bar spider got killed, the real guys name was Michael gianco and the guy Joe peci played is Thomas DeSimone
The different stages of gangster life expressed in tone, pacing, and editing are amazing. The ending is incredible. Absolutely loved your commentary!!
Anybody remember the cartoon Animaniacs and the pigeons who were the "GOODFEATHERS"? They were so on point with the characterization.... hilarious.
As you're assembling your list of Scorsese movies to see, don't overlook 'After Hours'. One of my favorite movies and, rather rare for Scorsese, it's a comedy!
Another great movie to watch along this vein is A Bronx Tale
I love you two reacting together!
Joe Pesci earned that Oscar!!
Enjoy Coy and Tara (ring the bell ring the bell) video reaction but I miss Coy and John doing more DC animation reactions. Hope that comes back
This movie is a classic
*GOODFELLAS* (1990) is a Phenomenal & Stunning Masterpiece!
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
*10/10*
Hearing Ray Liotta laughing they’ve should’ve made him Joker in a Batman movie 🃏😂
Lmaoo the silence is deafening !! Awesome reaction
I think you'll love A Bronx Tale, stars Chaz Palminteri (based loosely on his childhood) and directed by DeNiro😮❤
Great movie. A shame how that young actors life turned out though.
@loyal_to_the_nightsky I think he's been clean almost 2 decades now and dedicated his life to helping others which in turn keeps him clean. It's horrendous that it took the loss of an innocent life to turn things around eventually, but at least he's not letting it be in vain
Best Movie ever made.....Not even a discussion needed. Outstanding...
Another fun fact the actor who played Billy Batts, Frank Vincent, was Joe Pescis partner in a comedy vaudeville act in the 1970s 😊
RIP Ray Liotta. One of my favorite movies.
Watching this reaction has made me re-appreciate how much of a master Scorsese is at filmmaking the shots are beautifully done 👏
Don't know if you knew this but the mother you love so much in the movie is actually Martin Scorsese's mom!
If you haven't seen it yet " A Bronx Tale" is definitely a watch especially if you loved this
Btw Jordan Belfort and Henry Hill are both protagonists.
This and Boogie Nights...1 and 1a. The way music is incorporated in both is phenomenal
That shot where you said the "edits were so seamless"?
The edits are so seamless because they are non-existent.
This movie and Donnie Brasco i watched all the time. They would always be on regular cable. Both amazing.
