Don't caulk the bottom. You need to have a way for the water to get out if it finds it way in. I'd also do two layers of tape on the sill and cut the corners at right angles to each other.
Never caulk the bottom nor put the water proof tape over the bottom flange. You need water to get out that way. It is recommended by most window installers to put a small U shim under the bottom flange to allow water to escape if it ever got in.
Mr Mark I love hearing comments like that and am so happy to hear that the video helped so much. This is why I do what I do and thank you so much for sharing. Hope you subscribed :)
a great way to make caulking (sealant) look clean and straight is to use an empty caulking tube and running it along the bead. After tooling it, it will look very nice. I do this every time I install windows.
Great wideo, Thanks! I love expression on your face at 8:10. Yes, turcoise will be great color! Thanks for showing flushing tips and silicon under the window.
I taught my neighbors using your video and we replaced my window together. They tried to cut corners, but I referred to your video and we did it exactly as you teach. It looks great! And the most important - it is sealed like submarine. We are in Seattle where it is very important, since it rains 380 days in a year. Thank you so much!

Thanks for the refresher course, i haven't replaced a window in 40 years. Time to get busy again, i don't think I will be around for the next window replacement.
Gotta say. I'm looking into replacing my windows myself after this video. I thought it would be impossible for me to do it myself but I can easily follow this video and save thousands. Thanks! The only question I have is this. If the old window is larger than the new window, what extra steps need to be taken? Does the wood framing need to be the exact size of the window (snug fit when placed in the hole) or should there be a gap between the window and the frame? My only fear is that I will have too small of a hole and the window will fit now that it's cold out but will not be able to open when it gets hot out in the summer.
I love hearing that Jeremy and thanks so much for watching. That’s exactly why I do what I do and hope you subscribed. As for your questions, how different are we talking about? A couple inches? Feet? If it’s just a couple of inches I would add some wood furring so you can average about a 1/2” gap on either side of the window. As long as you have a 1/4” gap and it is screwed in place as I did I wouldn’t worry about movement long term. Hope that helps and thanks again for watching.
@@BYOTools Thanks! Now I have another question. My house is a brick house. The windows are not screwed in from the outside. I've searched a lot of videos but they all say to slap the new window in the hole and foam it. That's it. I'm sooooooooo confused. How can they just foam it? And what about the black tapey stuff? Do brick houses not get that? What about expansion and the 1/4 inch gap? Does it not apply to brick? I'm so lost :(
I installed a window but I think I messed up. It was a remodeling project. So I did the framing and the I cut the siding for the rough opening (cedar) but I also cut the plywood out so when I nailed my window I did it directly to the framework. So I got a couple of question. 1.- is that going to work? Especially against water, I put my flashing tape just like you did but I'm concerned I nailed it to the framework. 2 does it have to be nailed against the plywood or sheeting? Hope I can get an answer soon. Thanks
why did you not install flashing to the top trim? you mentioned it needs to match the look, but wont that cause problems in the future , or will the overhanging part of the house prevent this?
I’m buying a home and will be moving in next month. One thing I know I’m going to be replacing is the windows. You video makes it look sooo easy! I hope it is, I’ve never done anything like this before and have no one to help me. Google all the way.
I want to use that trim around our windows we have that same type of siding right now, but are going to put insulation and then vinyl over it this spring. Should we install the siding first? Then do the window trim. Or vice versa
I got new vinyl windows, today i see both have a gap at the bottom of the trim at the right hand corner. Its above the weep hole, is this supposed to be there, or should i caulk that?? Its only on the right side both windows. On the outside of the window?
What type of blade are you using in your saw when you cut the siding? I'm about to do this but first got to know the hard way why you don't just use the regular blade... 🤦♂️
Absolutely the best window installation video. What kind of siding do you have? I need to install a window in aluminum siding and wonder if I will need a j channel between the siding and trim or just caulk between the siding and trim like you did???
With this type of window and trim you don't need it as long as you caulk properly. However, you can definitely add it to the top if you would like. I probably would have however these windows are in an odd location where there is very little chance of moisture hitting the window trim. Hope that helps Issam and thanks for watching. Hope you subscribed.
It depends on the type of trim you have and how the new window fits in. In most cases yes you do have to remove the interior trim and resize it but that is not always the case. Thanks for watching Chris and hope you enjoyed the video.
I have the exact same situation, old aluminum windows with siding that has no plywood behind them and no trim. My question is about the flashing you did after intalling the window, did you lift your siding up and glue behind siding or cut it ?
Looked like you flashed the bottom in reverse order. Shingle flashing would have the bottommost piece go in before the sill-pan that went inside the frame. I'm not confident in this technique.
Flashing tape has to have more pressure than just being hand pressed in the place in order to activate the adhesion aspects of the adhesive….. you absolutely must use a leverage-building hand roller with a lot of pressure.
You don't need to use a circular saw or cut any of the siding-ever. Installed replacement windows for 13 years. Remove the panes of glass, then use a crowbow and a piece of wood to pry the frame out. A homeowner would have had a fit if I had started sawing the siding. Same method if it's brick, just be careful as not to break the brick. Simple.
@@BYOToolsWhen you collapse the frames like the method X Steel is referencing, you would have to use a thru jamb installation method. The problem with that method is you are not able to flash the window. So, your only water proofing would be the caulk joint between the siding and the window. You would backer rod and apply low expansion foam around the window behind the caulk joint.
@@BYOTools you wouldn't have a flange. Either break it off, or get the proper window, which would be a replacement window. You'd drill it in from the inside. I'd be pissed if someone did this to my house.
One of the most comprehensive instructions to replace old windows. A 100% job. Thank you
Don't caulk the bottom. You need to have a way for the water to get out if it finds it way in. I'd also do two layers of tape on the sill and cut the corners at right angles to each other.

The sarcasm is 😁 😂 😀 🤣....but straight uncut to the damn point....
can you tell me any other tool to cut the siding around the window beside the skill saw, it is kind of heavy for me, thanks
An oscillating multi tool would be great or a grinder if you have to cut fiber cement siding
Should caulk be applied on the bottom of the window opening
Seems like you should leave it open to drain bottom?
Yes caulk the bottom, but do NOT cover the weep holes. Windows typically haves built in “weep holes” for water to drain from
I typically caulk about 4 inches from each end at the bottom. I leave the middle in case of a leak water could drain out.

I was always taught to not caulk the bottom of the window so any water that got in can drain out
I've heard both ways to do so but I'm always going to caulk all sides. Haven't had any issues yet. Thanks for watching Peter.
