    Ever since I discovered that you were a NO-BULL kind of guy, I have been studying your videos endlessly. It's refreshing to get advice from someone who knows how to work on a budget, too. Your advice is a lot like my Dad's, only more educational and less "Hold that light still." From terms to techniques--tips and tricks, I've learned an incredible amount from you, Jeff! We are closing on a 60's house soon and I'll be able to put more of that into action. And I'm not proud of it, but I did listen to your explanation of different types of caulking during my commute the other day. The more you know... Thanks guy!

    I took my house window install a couple steps further to improve the air and water seal. Flash the inside of the window frame with a rubber flashing and then use silicone around the entire frame before installing the window. The silicone and rubber flashing will act as a gasket to get a perfect air seal around the window in a way spray foam never will. Feel free to fill major gaps around the inside of the window with spray foam afterwards to improve the insulation value, but I don't recommend it for water sealing micro gaps likes what is found in between a new window and the frame.
    Really appreciate your videos, I've installed 1000 sq ft of flooring, completely rebuilt the kitchens floor joists, dinning and kitchen sub floor, siding, roofing, doors, windows, two bathrooms, drywall, thanks to your videos encouraging others to give it a shot before hiring the work out. The home was reappraised and is literally double what we bought it for. saved a small fortune

      Ref home being worth double after your good works - to.
      It might have been appraised at twice the value, but, only if someone agrees to that price point, doesn't make a counter offer and their bank will give them a mortgage.
      In UK we gave seen a record rise in house prices (not far off £235k) because our Chancellor reduced the Stamp Duty. This is economic madness because nobody knows if the furlough schemes will still continue now we have seen an "almost" second wave of c-19.
      Basically job losses will bring a sharp drop in house prices.
      Would therefore take whatever value your estate agent (realtors?) suggest with a huge pinch of salt.
      Would further suggest you enjoy whatever improvements you made for their own sake.
      If you "rebuilt" your home to suit you then whoever buys your property might do exactly the same.
      In UK property is no longer the sure bet to generate wealth it once was.
      Sincerely hope the same doesn't apply to you folks too.

    The window manufacturers make windows with built in J trim for vinyl siding. I turn to Jeff for his knowledge and expertise. In most cases, especially in having to deal with building inspectors, his understanding of building codes will keep you out of trouble. In my opinion, installing the waterproofing membrane and calking is an extra, inexpensive step to protect the biggest investment you'll ever make, your house. Even if it is no longer necessary. This is a how to install a window a different way and Jeff has other videos using the waterproofing membrane with a window or door install.

    Great video Jeff! I was just waiting to see if you put the drip cap above the window! Lol! Please don’t take this in the wrong way,,The only thing that I would have done differently, would be to order the window 1” smaller to have a better bead of foam to seal it up on the interior and I would have ordered the jambs already installed on the window. The foam does a better bead when its min. 3/8”. Everything you did with the tyvek and blue tuck tape is the way to do it! I would also still shim the key points on the interior of the sides also, to support the frame and fasten through the shims. We use 3/8” premium screw caps that don’t look so bad and are great. I would also recommend that you pre caulk the top exterior corners on the drip prior to installing the j on the sides right in the top corners. (Hard to explain easier to show. basically caulking the brickmold to your top drip from under where you did the perfect 1 inch overhang!) The comments I have made are only because I have been Window Wise certified since 2001. FOR EVERYONE THAT WATCHED THIS VIDEO, JEFF DID AN AMAZING JOB! 🤩perfect video for DIYERS and guys who are starting off installing windows! Jeff knows his stuff! Thanks for sharing Jeff! Btw, its nice to see your boys helping you out! Stay safe and healthy Jeff and everyone out there! 👍🏻 (you can look into the screw cap covers, from SIL plastics. they have a factory in Vaughan, Ontario. I’m sure you will like them just watch out if you want blue white or a bone white color to match the color of the interior of your window. the ones we use are part #89 hole plug part) Hope this helps!🤓

    I don't know if the type of foam maters, but we found that spray foam will expand to fill the space, but then it will shrink over time, pulling the frame of the window apart. If this is an active window, that will destroy your water and air infiltration raiting. You should also use solid shims on the sides. Or your window will sag when your house moves and make the window hard or impossible to operate. This also can let water and air in.

    Tyvek works better when you wrap the sill and sides before putting in the window

    • @theitkamp55
      @theitkamp55 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I dont know of a window manufacturer that recommends tyvek wrapping into a window opening. Do you have instructions that show this from one?

    • @chrisworster4878
      @chrisworster4878 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      No that’s not very effective, especially on the top, because if water runs down the tyvek, it runs inside the house. It’s better to cut the tyvek at the end of the opening, and cut a flap at the top, so once you put the window in, the top piece of tyvek goes over the flange, keeping out the water

    • @MrLegendL2118
      @MrLegendL2118 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Chris Worster So then doing it this way is totally wrong? th-cam.com/video/nY964NYMcv4/w-d-xo.html
      So after doing all 4 corners & sides install window then use flashing tape to cover flanges to tyvek on 3 sides and leave the bottom off so just in case water has a way to escape. That’s the wrong way? So the Huber Zip system is wrong?

  • @denim1man
    @denim1man 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    At the 3:30 mark you can see the top left corner of the flange is busted off. This is why manufacturers don’t recommend relying on using the flange as part of the building envelope sealing protocol. It seems when you are putting a thousand dollar window into a million dollar home with very little overhang using Blueskin membrane tape and not Tuktape might be a good idea.

    • @8419james
      @8419james 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's not broken, the corner is made that way. If you look closely when he is starting to nail the flange the other corners are the same way. All of the windows I installed in my house were like this also.

  • @XS-ss7go
    @XS-ss7go 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I would have put silicone before nailing the top flange, sometimes the tape fails, and you will have penetrating nail wholes leaking water in

    Are you planning on doing a video about finishing an attic to add rooms to a house?? I bought a new construction townhome this year (construction completed in June). The second floor could have been two extra bedrooms and a full bathroom, but I only had them finish the first floor, so the whole second floor is just unfinished attic space now, with the plumbing already run up there by the builders for the future bathroom. I had to shift my rough openings a bit to get them off the partial brick face so I don't have to cut the nailing fin off the new construction windows I bought. The rough openings were termite damaged anyway and wouldn't hold fasteners. Two windows are the original windows when the house was built, the other replaced by a previous owner and in good shape. However it was installed improperly and the rough opening insect damaged so I'm reinstalling. Looks like the nailing fin was cut off except at the top so I have to treat as a replacement window. Wasn't planning on taking it out but looks like I don't have a choice.

    I just installed a new window with a nailing flange onto shed siding. I put a membrane all the way around the window, per window instructions and watching your videos-:). Looked straight forwar enough. It rained and water built up on the inside of the sill on top of the membrane and ran down the inside of the shed. I left a small gap of caulking at the bottom of the window on the outside, just in case water did get inside and it would have a way to run out... I obviously did something wrong?!

    great video! my only question is this:
    i noticed that you installed the side exterior tape first, and then the top exterior tape. if you should have your top exterior tape overlap your side exterior tape, then why did you not have your side exterior tape overlap your bottom exterior tape, for extra water protection? does the new tape technology account for that?
    thanks again for everything you do!

    Thanks Jeff! When nailing in the flange to the house, I'm naturally terrified of using a hammer anywhere the frame holding the glass, and would prefer the grip of a screws teeth rather than the friction of a nail. I assume using drywall screws are a big 'no-no' but are there any types of thin profile screws that would be okay to use for this procedure?

    Hey jeff, love your videos. I have an old house on replacing the windows and siding on. I would really like to use this type of window with a nailing flange, we are taking the old vinyl off and leaving on the old wood siding. Since the surface is not as smooth, can I still use this window? Or do I need to use a replacement window.
    Second question, vinyl windows can come with an integrated J channel, seems like that would be the best way to go to reduce moisture. Wondering why I don’t see very many of those on videos. Thanks again.

    Just building our new home, Nova Scotia, family property on the ocean. Last year due to covid I hired some great guys to bring the house to water tight before winter, and they did do great work, on time within budget. I'm looking at the window installation, there is tyvek, they have caulked, but I can see the nailing flange has no tape on it. The tyvek is behind the nailing flange. From your video I'm thinking its an error, the question is, what's the fix, Cut the tyvek, use extra tape then retape the tyvek to the nailing flange. the windows have a built in channel for siding, if that matters.

      I prefer the look of the same color j channel since all the rest of the trim on this house will be green. no sense changing it now. besides some of the windows were don last year and have no integrated J so I didn't want to alter the look. they were installed as replacement and not new construction at the time.

    ....... I like taping the tyvek to the TOP of the nailing flange but I want to tape the tyvek to the building then tape the sides of the nailing flange to the tyvek. sorry Jeff I don't like your method here.
    I want to seal that opening first. then seal the window to the tyvek

      I agree. Tucking the bottom nailing flange under the barrier is a huge no-no in my market...not sure what the standards are in his. I don’t care what you do above the window or what products you use, you must shingle the system to allow water to escape once it’s there. Because it will be there.
