  • Hey Gang! What a special video we have for you today. The one and only ‪@buildshow‬ made a trip over to Houston to help us with a "bomber" install of these Pella Impervia Fiberglass windows. Matt gave us his best advice, opinions, and install practices for these windows to make sure they last as long as possible, and we hope you can pick up a few things for your window installs, because as you can see, it's a lot easier than you may think! Thanks for watching guys, next video is going to be nuts!

    Seeing the quality and craftsmanship that Stud Pack puts into each job, has made a stamp on all carpenters of better knowledge. Having Stud Pack shows the right way the job should be done right. Learning different skills and products to make carpentry a word and not abuse or short-cut corners. While his family learns from building inspectors about shoring up a wall and meeting the challenge head-on. While getting the bracing to do it right without the walls falling down. Then bringing other people on the show to understand their skills too. As a carpenter, each time I watch your shows, it brings excitement to me. I want to be a part of your building of this house in Theory, but watching your shows is still the best treatment. Keep up the Best Work. Thank You

    Most window tint companies carry an almost fully transparant film that will cut around 80% of the UV and heat. I had it installed on my truck but it is also installed in homes. My truck used to burn me up here in the south until I installed the film. 3M makes it just search for "window tint anti heat" and the link to 3M will come up. This added to the Pella rating will make that house easy-easy to cool, and lower your cooling costs.

    • @denisegaylord382
      @denisegaylord382 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

      Very true, but some films are not diy, or require a specific gap between edge of window and film. I installed some Gila Film on my sun porch windows. It had to be applied in a specific direction, with a minimum gap on the double pane glass window to act as a thermal break. It was a job. Took all day to do 2 4' x 4' slider windows, and a set of 6' patio doors. Sometimes its easier to have a pro do somethings. 😊

    • @1packatak
      @1packatak 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      I have that 3M film on my home windows, as the builder installed ones are not good. There was definitely a difference after we did it, especially on our giant south facing windows. They also cut down on fading of woods, carpet and fabrics.

      when ordering Pella Impervia, you have different insulation glass options, one of which being blocking 95% UV. they simply chose to go with the cheaper option of 86% since it's like $300 cheaper per window.

    I was the shop foreman at Pella of Georgia for 14 years having left them in 1996. When I left there ALL of their windows were stain grade wood on the inside and only had wood or aluminum clad exterior. Plus all products left our shop with jamb extensions applied to suit its installation location. Seeing these fiberglass units makes me feel the need to check them out, even though I am not going to be doing more windows in my lifetime, too old for that now. But I have 43 windows and 9 exterior doors ( employee discount ) in my house built in '86 and no issues with them at all.

    Nicely done. I used Pella years ago for my garage/recording studio and was happy with the soundproofing provided by the double-glaze using differing thicknesses of glass. Best windows I ever saw were in Amsterdam where I lived for six years -- triple-glazed tilt and turn. They could open every which way and since I'd been raised strictly with double-hung, it was quite an eye opener.

    Sweet! You guys have hit the big time. Build Show approved! I installed Impervia's in my house up in Mass. Not sure those screws were available then and I definitely caused some slight damage on a couple. Thankfully on the 2nd story. Fiberglass is great cuz the welds stay strong - unlike vinyl. They'll keep their stats as they age. You could start with a vinyl window that has a better rating and after the first year or 2 it's performing worse. The other thing I like is they're not flimsy. Didn't struggle as much with them racking or bowing. They did a little, but we just dialed it in. No regrets other than double-pane. I think I would have done triple if I did it again. Probably code now with 2023 IECC released and adopted.

    When I started having more carpel tunnel symptoms, I got myself an electric caulk gun. My god, I should have gotten it so much earlier. I know you can't feel the caulk the same way, but once you get the hang of it, it's the most uniform application of caulk. It gets to the point where running with a finger barely adjusts the shape and I have very little I wipe/waste. Worth a shot in my opinion.

      @beachton 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I second this. I love my battery powered Ryobi caulk gun. It’s especially good for PL3 and that kind of two part epoxy that mixes in the nozzle. Squeezing that stuff by hand wrecks my wrists.

    Long time fans of both, but 30 plus years in custom home building. I do not agree with the screws being used. I back cut the flange on the nail strip and thickness of fastener used to keep window trim as flush to wall as possible. Roofing nails work the best in my opinion. Usually 1 blade width of back cut on a table saw takes care of that otherwise great job and well sealed.

      If you plan to air-gap the siding/surface treatment, those screw heads will make no difference. And Risinger is a big fan of that detail.

    What did Matt think of your eaves? He was the first guy I saw talking about air barriers and conditioning the entire interior space. He build his house without eaves and then added a second set of roof framing that added more insulation to the roof and provided the rafter tails for the eaves.

    I love this series, watching the house go from nothing to something so nice looking has been amazing to see. also I work with deliveries at a building supply store, I've seen a boom truck get drywall into weirder places than that door you were thinking so it shouldn't be an issue

  • @shibby4389
    @shibby4389 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

    The proper knuckle picker boom trucks should have no problem getting at that bridge opening. They can handle a ton of weight on a straight lift but if they have to reach fairly far they might just load say 4 sheets at a time as opposed to 8.

    backer rod is essential for any joint over 1/8. Both silicone and urethane are only rated for a depth of up to 1/4 inch, otherwise they will not keep a seal with expansion/contraction.
