Would love to see the 1218 back on the rails again!! I have fond memories of growing up in Birmingham Ala. and visiting the southern shops in Irondale in the 80's with my father, during which I had the opportunity to watch the 611 and 1218 being restored several times for excursion service!!
Amazing video! I hope to go to the VMT one day! You are right! Strasburg Railroad in PA does have a 4-8-0 Mastodon. The N&W 475. It was awesome having N&W 611 visit Strasburg for a couple of years. Hopefully one day it woll come back to visit 😊 Thanks for sharing!!
Great Museum, my favourite steam locomotive is the Canadian National Railways U-1-F class 4-8-2 and my favourite diesel is the Canadian National C-Liners. That J-Class is pretty sweet as well.
Had the opportunity to go in the cab while they were firing it up and talk with them when it was at Strasburg. You are correct it is awesome. Makes you gitty and emotional when you see her under steam. favorite Diesel is the UP Centennial DDA40X
I got to ride on the last excursion in 1992 I think from Bristol to Roanoke pulled by the 611 many photos they stopped and did a run by..great memories
My favorite locomotive is the Atlantic Coast Line P5a class 4-6-2 no. 1504. She was the first locomotive I learned of that was preserved from my hometown railroad. Until her restoration is finished, 611 is my favorite active locomotive. Note: the ACL (now CSX) line I grew up by is nicknamed the Bowline, hence my channel name. Danny Harmon has a couple videos about it on his Distant Signal channel if you like to know more about it and my friend Charles was his guide in both of them.
My favorite steam locomotive would be the PRR T1 Duplex. I have two copies in both HI and N scale. Fell in love with it seeing it in Zo scale in the St. Paul, MN train layout in Bandana Square. Also like the streamlined Hiawatha and Commodore Hudson steam locos for picks 2 & 3. My favorite deal would probably be the CB&Q EMA E5A. Second pick would be the D&RGW PA1&2 with the yellow nose. I’m a happy fan of the assorted streamlined Zephyrs.
Nooo she has the glass back up my grandma shan took me on a trip from Bristol to Roanoke my parents and I lived in Christiansburg during the train ride a meet a conductors daughter and ended up spending my time learning and hanging out with her even though she broke down and we had to be pulled back by a desiel so my favorite for sure is 611
2-8-0 is called a consolidation The 4-8-0 is a mastodon At one time they had a wooden mock up of steam locomotive near the O Guage layout in the lobby area.
J class number 613 was the last streamlined steam passenger locomotive and the last J class locomotive built in America by the Norfolk and Western Railroad in 1950. There were only 3 bulit in 1950.
1218 is a sa story to me. I doubt it will ever run again. It went in for a boiler rebuild, got half way through and work stopped. So today it would coat well over $1M to start a resto and then it would have no place to run. J 611 ia viBLW BUT gain no place o run these monsters. I am glad I am old enough to have ridden behind both at speed. When the J was restored in the 80's it was still allowed to run excursions at 50+ mph....or a little more. I too keep both running on my O scale layout....and I'll need to be happy with that. thx
I'm disappointed. As someone who makes railroad videos, you don't seem to know much about trains. N&W 1776 is an SD-45, not a GP-7. A 2-8-0 wheel arrangement is a consolidation, a Mastodon is a 4-8-0. If you were there in 2001, then the J was there, under shelter. The first part of the pavilion (where 1218 now sits) was built in the 1990's specifically for the 611. The second half, which covers the next two tracks was completed in 2003 to house the 1218.
4014 the big boy and I know that they are 4 of them left but the good news is that they brought the 4014 back to life. I know they said that they are thinking about bringing the other big boy back to life which that will be great 2 big boys running again. That's my favorite steam engine the big boys yyyeeeaaahhh

Restoring 1218 won’t be easy, thankfully we have 611 running.
Absolutely
Maybe some time in the future some people might donate to make N&W restore 1218

Thanks for watching
I have a HO 611 and i love it.

Another interesting spot i missed 611 at Strasburg last year by a day

the 611 is my Favorite too also number 90 at Strasburg
my favorite locomotive is the 1218
I saw the 611 at Strasburg railroad. It’s a thing of beauty

611 is still in operational condition correct? And do they intend to keep it that way or are they gonna keep it on static display
I’m a major rail fan. Love your excitement. I get equally excited. EMD series (E-8) my personal favorite
2-8-0 is called a consolidation
The 4-8-0 is a mastodon
At one time they had a wooden mock up of steam locomotive near the O Guage layout in the lobby area.
Before he retired, my dad drove both school buses and city buses. I really loved the bicentennial paint scheme on the Norfolk and Western engine.

GREAT VIDEO
My dad and I were there in September 2015. They had the 2156 back then.
Yeah, NS towed it back to St. Louis a few years ago. We have video of that on here...
Love that place I have gone by there often NW made some of the best trains 611 1218 1151 too 🚂
7:34 that locomotive is actually a consolidation (2-8-0) a mastodon is a (4-8-0) understand the mixup, they are very similar.
My favorite 4-8-4 is AT&SF 3751, favorite articulated is 3985, favorite Berk is 2716, I'm so ready for 2716's return.
1218 only ran excursions for 4 years, March 1987 through November 1991.
Even though Norfolk & Western Class A 1218 isn’t running, it is on display inside the Virginia Museum Of Transportation.
That horrible looking mastodon (4-8-0) at the beginning is a N&W M Class, the same thing as strasburg railroad 475.
15:27 agreed with you
They should restore it send it down to NCTM
Because that would be the perfect place for it to get restored
This museum removed the Southern railway equipment. Southern Railway was in Virginia too.
Supposedly according to vmt 611 will be running some maintenance excursions in the summer. Have no clue where and the dates have been announced
Oh really?
I hope that happens if NS allows it back on the tracks
The reason why 611 can’t run on the mainline its self it’s because of ptc
Nice got one in HO scale The 611
BIG BOY and Allegheny 2-6-6-6 my favorites
You asked what was our favorite steam engines; my favorite is the Allegheny (2-6-6-6).
I wonder when they are gonna get 611 out
Same here
The Bicentennial unit... IS A SD45!!!!!
My apologies
The 4-8-0 is the mastodon and the 0-8-0 is a switcher
What is the one that is outside the fence?
1151 is next to the bridge she is a M class
Get it INSIDE the fence
N&W 1218! Update!
😎👍

O scale is 1/48 from what I remember
The GG1 has pantographs not cantilevers. 😂
The one outside the fence is owned NS railroad. They own it outright
2-8-0 is actually a Consolidation, not a Mastodon.
Correct, I miss spoke. Apologies
@@RailfanDepotCincinnati Ok :)
A 4 8 0 is a mastodon
1776 is a sd45
#fireup1218
AMTK Floridian! Taking over!
DANIEL PLEASE! STOP IT ALREADY!
