I was at that convention in 1987. In fact, I was on that train in the vestibule of a 10-6 sleeper. There were three of us there. One of them was Graham Claytor. He, another fellow and I swapped spots to get pictures of 1218. Mr. Claytor was a classic gentleman of the first order.
Could have been possible if the National Museum of Transportation hadn't been such a pain in the rear with the terms and conditions about leasing 2156 to NS for their steam program.
me and my bf are real railfans and have dreamed of these beauties for so long, wish there were more footage and that 1218 could run new age again and breathe life once more! My baby 611 and his baby 1218, god bless the railroad N&W. :):) Really hope 1218 runs, we will miss you 1218, rest in peace for now, may your legacy live on!!!! Go railfans, yeeha!! 😍😍😍😍😍💖💖💖🚂🚂🚂🚂
I rode behind both these engines but never saw them in steam at the same time. I so envied those who were there to see this, what has to be the pinnacle of the NRHS conventions. No way you'll see one of the conventions top this one!
if you look up brad miller on spotify, you'll find a recording of the doubleheader at covesville around the same time i believe. his recordings are underrated and not many know about them
I heard that the coal reserves along the N&W and Virginian railways are calculated at 5.1 billion tons but htat much of the resource is too deep and/or thin to be mined. What a shame.

N&W 611: Welcome home
N&W 1218: Thank you 😊 it’s great to be back home
hey n&w 1218 welcome home one of the great gints of a well known steam era
UP 3985: Not LOL 😂
What a remarkable sight. The only thing keeping it from being a full recreation of the steam age is a Y6a coming down hill.

I wish I saw these 2 trains side by side in 1987 - at the age of 13.

Agreed, indeed it was. I was there. With the present climate as it is there will not be any more like it.

I heard from Rich Melvin that even when the locomotive is really close, there isn't any audio distortion.
1987 National Railway Historical Society Convention in Roanoke, Virgina.
At 1:14 to 2:24 is the real sound of music.
One day and I wish in my time NW 1281 would come back to life
Its 1218, wtf is 1281? 😂
It's like the Thomas and Friends episode "Dream On" but with N&W locomotives.

What a luck!
Also how many coal hoppers did 1218 have on her?
50 with an N&W caboose on the rear.
Where was all of this exactly?
