Same story here. Was a loyal Sega fan to a fault. Had a Saturn and master system as well. I remember going to toys r us and debating between ps1 and Saturn... wow, brings back a lot of fond memories of college days - Echelon/Kalisto were also mostly reachable via IRC back then and had an incredible amount of super friendly people willing to share/teach everyone. In retrospect, makes you appreciate the old school social networks and how people used them back then compared to the nonsense that is happening on FB/Insta today. One thing you forgot to mention is that many of the group members were later convicted for one thing or another during Operation Fastlink in 2004-2005. Although that obviously didn't stop anyone

It never ceases to amaze me as to how much love gets poured into this console by its community. Whether it be the Dream-Pi to get Dreamcast games back online. Or the homebrew community who keep bringing out games for it. It is nothing short of amazing that even after 20 years, the community surrounding still has a pulse and still keeps it kicking. Pretty sure the difference between mil and regular CD's is in the formatting not the disc itself so regular CD-R's and CD-RWs should probably work fine (maybe, there actually is a difference between -R, -RW, +R, and +RW but most disc drives can at least read all 4 formats without issue).

    • @anononomous
      @anononomous 4 ปีที่แล้ว

The Dreamcast could read burned CDs fine and burning reduced disc images CDs on a PC was fine too. It was only executing code off them on a Dreamcast that was the problem for Joe Pirate (which was solved with the mil CD hack, which in turn was baked into images you would burn with Nero). The work of reading, ripping the GD discs, making them burnable and playable on on a DC was done for you by groups like Echelon.

4:39 Man I haven't heard that Echelon tune in a long time. Amazing to think the Dreamcast is 20 years old now. The Dreamcast was my very first console. Growing up I remember receiving burned copies of games as a kid. I had the Utopia Boot CD, the Generator demo disc, and a Bleemcast disc for Gran Turismo 2. I didn't understand the significance of all this as a kid. All I knew was that I could play burned games and PS1 games right on my Dreamcast and thought it was the coolest thing ever. I still have my collection of games along with my original memory card and a Revision 0 Dreamcast. So many memories with this console. I can still remember the first time I booted up Crazy Taxi. Good times.

A friend of mine had a Dreamcast. It crashed during bootup quite frequently but when it worked, it was indeed a great console. I've sort-of wanted my own since playing on it at the time but always thought it was dead with few games ever made. After watching, I now hope to get one soon!

Great look back! I remember back in the early 2000's I bought myself a serial cable and ripped my games myself, it was a heck of a process, taking about 24 hours per game! Crazy to think of now considering you can transfer a DC image over the web in less than a couple of minutes :) (Not that I condone this kind of thing)

I remember in Dreamcast magazine the article about Shenmue said that it was going to be like 12 parts or something, I was so hyped about it at the time. Dreamcast is a beast! I still have mine, it’s easy enough to burn games for it too 👌🏽

Fantastic coverage. 20 years, and still thinking. I remember hearing about Echelon, and others. Crazy how things turned out. It was definitely a different time, Sega is a different entity these days. But you never know there are surprises when you least expect them.

Superb video! Really interesting info on the hacking side - I’ve got loads of burnt games but have never seen one of those hack group intros on any? They look like the old Amiga ones you used to get....

I had a Dreamcast back in the day and it really did feel like something special!
Sonic Adventure, Shenmue, Powerstone, Tech Romancer, PSO, Skies of Arcadia, etc so so so many great games and it only really had a couple of years shelf life!

My favorite console of all time! Although I got it 10 years after it released when I was 14, it really kickstarted my obsession with retro tech and collecting. This little white box changed my life...literally.

Dreamcast is lovely. I bought one too back then and it still works. It launched in 1998 in Japan, during prime time of N64 and PS1.
It were a huge leap from those to DC.

Love my Saturn, but it couldn't quite give us arcade perfect ports. House of the dead and Daytona USA suffered mightingly on Saturn.

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY DC!🎉🎁🎈
@11:30 if you power on the DC 1st, then your monitor after, it should balance out the image. using Akura? Gekko? Pound? VGA? If you power on the monitor 1st, then the DC, it will always put the image to one side.
I love your videos. long time listener, (on my main channel) 1st time caller. 😊

The Dreamcast realy is the largest step forward in gaming. It is still incredible. If it came with a built in hard drive, it might have had its own version of XBMC.

Happy birthday Dreamcast! When it was released in Europe, I had just started my University studies. Unfortunately I couldn't afford the Dreamcast back then, because a laptop for all kinds of scientific- and homework had priority. And when I finally could've afforded the Dreamcast a year later, the system was already close to dead in Europe, so I went to buy the brand new PS2 instead, which was also a good decision, and which I still own today.

One of the illest consoles ever. It's hard to belive we seriously watched something so awesome die. I blame piracy. Even the later Sega Sports model also had weak protection. Everyone I knew back in the day who had one just burned all of their games and had stacks of 100 games or so.
Phantasy Star, HeadHunter, Resident Evil 2,3, Code Veronica, Shenmue 1&2, Sonic Adventure 1&2, Marvel Vs Capcom 1&2, Capcom VS SNK 1&2, Spawn, Sword of the Berzerk, Incoming, UFC, Royal Rumble, AJPW Giant Gram 2000, Jetset Radio, Space Channel 5, Metropolis Street Racer, Tokyo Extreme Racer 1&2, Skies of Arcadia, Crazy Taxi 1&2, PowerStone 1&2, StarLancer, Confidential Mission Virtua Cop 2, Daytona USA, Ecco Ferrari F355 Challenge, Soul Calibur, Virtua Fighter 3TB, Silent Scope, HalfLife, Ikaruga, Dino Crisis, Street Fighter 3, Rival Schools, House of the Dead2, Zombie Revenge, Carrier, Dead or Alive 2, Rez, ..........
There are way too many great fucking games on this thing. I seriously wonder what could have been beyond the amazing shit that we did get.

I never played any Dreamcast game and never even touched a Dreamcast before. But seeing that the console still has a huge support by its fans, even to this day, is fascinating to me. I hope Sega is proud with what they did back in the day.

    Nice video.
Btw, 870 MB CD-R already existed back then. They were expensive but existed.
I had bought a couple to burn some Dreamcast games.

870 MB? Never seen one of those. Even today, the maximum commercially available is 700 MB. Do you have any pictures of videos of such discs?

I remember borrowing a Dreamcast from my friend as a kid with the Demo Disc for Sonic Adventure on it. It was the only console that pulled me away from my SNES. Then followed games like Shenmue, what a fantastic little console!
