Same story here. Was a loyal Sega fan to a fault. Had a Saturn and master system as well. I remember going to toys r us and debating between ps1 and Saturn... wow, brings back a lot of fond memories of college days - Echelon/Kalisto were also mostly reachable via IRC back then and had an incredible amount of super friendly people willing to share/teach everyone. In retrospect, makes you appreciate the old school social networks and how people used them back then compared to the nonsense that is happening on FB/Insta today. One thing you forgot to mention is that many of the group members were later convicted for one thing or another during Operation Fastlink in 2004-2005. Although that obviously didn't stop anyone

Still have my original Dreamcast that I got for Christmas 2000. The GD Rom Drive burnt out on it so I had to replace it recently with GD Emu. It never ceases to amaze me as to how much love gets poured into this console by its community. Whether it be the Dream-Pi to get Dreamcast games back online. Or the homebrew community who keep bringing out games for it. It is nothing short of amazing that even after 20 years, the community surrounding still has a pulse and still keeps it kicking. Love this little white box. Best Christmas present I ever got.

Pretty sure the difference between mil and regular CD's is in the formatting not the disc itself so regular CD-R's and CD-RWs should probably work fine (maybe, there actually is a difference between -R, -RW, +R, and +RW but most disc drives can at least read all 4 formats without issue).

    • @anononomous
      @anononomous 4 ปีที่แล้ว

The Dreamcast could read burned CDs fine and burning reduced disc images CDs on a PC was fine too. It was only executing code off them on a Dreamcast that was the problem for Joe Pirate (which was solved with the mil CD hack, which in turn was baked into images you would burn with Nero). The work of reading, ripping the GD discs, making them burnable and playable on on a DC was done for you by groups like Echelon.

It was mind blowing. For me, just as magical as playing Ridge Racer and Tekken in 1995 on the PS1 at home.

what will always make the dreamcast stick out to me, is that certain, offbeat vibe and aesthetic it had to it. the design, the intro along with the drive ratting and spinning up ... the white menu screen before it was cool, and of course the game library itself. sega still had some "tude" left in it.

4:39 Man I haven't heard that Echelon tune in a long time. Amazing to think the Dreamcast is 20 years old now. The Dreamcast was my very first console. Growing up I remember receiving burned copies of games as a kid. I had the Utopia Boot CD, the Generator demo disc, and a Bleemcast disc for Gran Turismo 2. I didn't understand the significance of all this as a kid. All I knew was that I could play burned games and PS1 games right on my Dreamcast and thought it was the coolest thing ever. I still have my collection of games along with my original memory card and a Revision 0 Dreamcast. So many memories with this console. I can still remember the first time I booted up Crazy Taxi. Yeah, the sound emulation in particular was awful, but this was really the first time many of us had access to something like this on a console in a playable state.

My very FIRST ever game, ONLINE, was Phantasy Star Online. I remember when I finally connected to other players I was absolutely blown away.

Fantastic coverage. 20 years, and still thinking. I remember hearing about Echelon, and others. Crazy how things turned out. It was definitely a different time, Sega is a different entity these days. But you never know there are surprises when you least expect them.

I remember having *"Electronic Gaming"* and on the front of the magazine it had an orange cover saying 9.9.99.. I will never forget that cause in the magazine they were comparing N64 and Dreamcast graphics with both Tony Hawk's Pro Skater ports.. I remember they were showing the faces of the characters on which you can get a clearer visual on the Dreamcast...

Great video! I still remember 9/9/99 when I picked up my DC early in the morning! What an amazing console.
I have a question though about that Commodore CRT monitor playing THOTD2 and Confidential Mission, which cable type are you using with it? I ask because I couldn't get DC light gun games to work on my 1994 Sony Vaio CRT monitor with VGA box or a S-video-to-VGA connector. I'm in NTSC territory if that matters.

Happy Birthday Dreamcast! I didn't get it on 9-9-99, but I got it shortly after I saw people playing Soul Calibur! Probably my favorite old school console behind the Sega Genesis!
A couple of years ago, my little cousins, aged 9, 11, and 13 at the time, borrowed my Dreamcast! It was basically their first game system, but they loved it! I had over 20 games for it, and they loved it! They are huge Sonic fans now after beating Sonic Adventure 1 and 2.

Dreamcast is lovely. I bought one too back then and it still works. It launched in 1998 in Japan, during prime time of N64 and PS1.
It were a huge leap from those to DC.

People may have their problems with the system but for me, every year is the year of the Dreamcast ❤️. Happy birthday old friend, you'll always be the console of the future.

Very nice video, Lantus! Congrats for the content and HQ video you are using. I didnt know kalisto and echelon were the same. I liked kalisto motto in nfos, “no egos no positions”. I think i got voiced once in their efnet channel. Long life mIRC, FlashFXP and Padus Discjuggler!! Thanks for this video. Happy bday Dreamcast!

My favorite console of all time! Although I got it 10 years after it released when I was 14, it really kickstarted my obsession with retro tech and collecting. This little white box changed my life...literally.

I bought one for $20 back in 2004 used off of a friend and I’ve had this ever since. I consider it one of my favorite game consoles and most memorable ones. My only regret is not getting more controllers and games back in the day.

Cool Video MVG. I'm about to pull out my Dreamcast. 7:36 Bart Tryzynadlowski The guy behind the SEGA Model 3 emulator Supermodel 3. I didn't know he's involved with Genesis emulation.

I remember borrowing a Dreamcast from my friend as a kid with the Demo Disc for Sonic Adventure on it. It was the only console that pulled me away from my SNES. Then followed games like Shenmue, what a fantastic little console!

My 2 friends had the Dreamcast, and one of them it was nothing but Soul Calibur, and boy was it badass, and so much fun. I will say that game ruled, along with POWER STONE i couldn't get tired of.

I bought mine when I first moved to Japan because of games and the ability to surf the internet. I only ever owned Sonic on it back them but it was enough to keep me busy. The rest I just rented. Now I have owned several and I am down to one with a broken drive, that I'll probably put the SD card mod on. Happy birthday Dreamcast!! Thanks MVG :-)

Even though I was a young adult and had consoles before Dreamcast still remains my favourite, just as you say arcade in the home it felt like with some truly awesome titles, SEGA deserved way better success with this console I thought.

The Sega Dreamcast was the best game console I ever owned. I played it until it broke down a couple of years later.

One thing that surprised me is that the Dreamcast had launched a release in North America just right after my birthday, no kidding. I was shocked that were both in around the same age, not only the launch date was right beside me. Now, if only I'd wish I'd own the Dreamcast...
