    I worked at Blockbuster also. I remember the release of the Dreamcast. I would rent one of them all the time. I ended up quitting, so I didnt know they dropped support.
    I ended up buying one at price cut. I love the eccentric games Sega put out.
    Sadly, I had to give in and get a PS2. I liked the PS2 but I didn't have the same fondness that I do for the Dreamcast.
    I still have mine that's about 5 feet away from me. I'm using the new Brawler controller. I have it converted to HDMI for my HD CRT. Games look awesome!
    I don't believe this console was a failure, I think everything around it was.

      Dreamcast, the big major console that despite getting it pretty much right with Sega putting so much tremendous effort into it, yet wasn't rewarded for it overall. It goes well with that adage of the Dreamcast not being a failure but society being a failure, everything from coy bitter retailers, to selfish American staff doing dumb things like Bernie stolar cutting the RRP from $249 to $199 (putting all the initial launch strain of manufacturing costs on Sega for every unit sold, instead of spreading it out over their consumer base at just $50 apiece), to disgruntled companies like EA, to doubtful consumers, to dodgy parasitical pirates ripping off the money the Dreamcast did make.
      And still, the Dreamcast did shatter all previous records at that point on launch, and now in it's post-market phase, it's still looked on more fondly and has a more vibrant post-market scene.

    Seeing Soul Calibur on a console in 99 was just unbelievable. It was really the first time a company could say a home console game was arcade quality if not better. To me that's the day arcades died in the west.

    Whats rarely mentioned and probably a bit more obscure is that Sega was going to flop before the launch all together and its only because one of their execs gave the company 650 million of his stock and then forgave Sega of the loan before he died

    • @retrojakexy
      @retrojakexy  ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Very true, and something I had in my original script, but seeing as how it was more a detail about Sega as a whole, and less specific to the Dreamcast itself (and I needed to cut some content for time), I decided to cut it. It is a fact though that without Isao Okawa giving Sega $500M, and subsequently forgiving said loan and returning his $695M in stock, Sega not only would have gone out of the console business, but business altogether! Thanks for watching!!

      @@PlasmaSnake369 True, yet SEGA had developed 5-6 different accelerator cards for the system, including one or two that would plug into the back. Unlike the more expensive Genesis addons, these would only cost $35-60, and the last one would've made the Saturn as potent as the Dreamcast itself, more than a year before the DC launch. The result would've been that hundreds of millions of dollars in existing Saturn inventory would've been bought by customers excited about the DC addon.
      This was widely discussed both inside and outside of SEGA, but... typical 90s SEGA. Half the cost of the DC was replacing parts like the CD-ROM, controllers, power supply, etc, that the Saturn already had.

    The dream cast was a really good and innovative system.
    I got my first taste of online multi-player on it because I wasn't a pc gamer back then.
    I had my first taste of FPS with
    UNREAL TOURNAMENT which was FRIGGIN AMAZING & so much fun!!
    I also played my first NBA 2k on dreamcast.
    It had a online as well with an option to play 2 on 2 up to 5 on 5 Street ball.
    Me and friends ended up playing 3 other dudes who were older every weekend. We would play with the current Allstars & they used the 80s players. It was so much fun. Iverson, McGrady & garnett vs Dr j Isiah Thomas & I can't remember the third.
    It also had a web browser disc that came with the system.
    It had RE Code Veronica.
    Can't forget SHENMUE the first open world game I remember playing.

    Working on the Sega Dreamcast's indie development kit, KallistiOS, right now as I watch this... Dreamcast never died. We're still making games for it to this day, with an extremely modern, capable development kit with a modern toolchain including C++23.
    I'm even a member of the VMU homebrew scene, and that little shit never died either. Just figured out something new about an unused buzzer mode literally TODAY with an assembly programming rockstar who is composing music for the little thing. Last week we discovered it can run at over 5x the clock rate it was advertised to run at in standalone mode by enabling the clock that gets activated when it plugs into the Dreamcast... lots of crazy homebrew potential.

    I wouldn't call the Dreamcast a failure at all. Sega made games for it all the way up until 2007 or 2008, Floigan Brothers had DLC released a couple years ago, making it the oldest console game to get DLC.
    Heck, you can still play most, if not all of Dreamcast's online titles online still to this day. Plus, Dreamcast ports of games like MVC2 are still the definitive versions, despite the game being rereleased on later consoles. All of this is very impressive, the only way Dreamcast "failed" is sales numbers.

    • @retrojakexy
      @retrojakexy  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      In my mind the Dreamcast isn't a failure; I loved/love it till this day and play it frequently. But... it was discontinued early, wasn't overall finically successful, and as much as I love it, and prefer it, it got it's ever living ass kicked by the PS2, lol! I suppose we could say that it was less of situation of the Dreamcast failing, and more one of Sega as a company failing😜 Thanks for watching!!

      This is true, the Sega Dreamcast actually technically outlasted its competitors outside of America. Even the Sega Saturn beat the Nintendo 64 in Asia especially and was ahead of the PlayStation for most of the time it was still market viable up till 1997 when Square launched Final Fantasy VII on it (Sega's answer was the excellent Panzer Dragoon Saga which today remains one of the greatest videogames ever produced to date), but by 1997, Sega had already internally moved onto Dreamcast development, while the Yanks in America like Bernie Stolar were trying to phase the Saturn out (one of the worst things they did in hindsight). Even the Sega Master System holds the accolade as being the longest produced home console ever on record thanks to the Sega-Tectoy official licence, making the Master System technically the longest running home console in the world.

    By the time Dreamcast came out, my house had switched over to Playstation. But only because, and I still remember, a guy my dad worked with at that time had bought a PS1. We weren't rich by any means and we were still using Sega Genesis at that time. But my point is that Sony, by then, had completely taken the console market by storm, and following the disaster that was the Saturn, Sega never recovered. Even though rival Nintendo was still using cartridges in their N64. With the launch of the PS2 and Microsoft entering the console market with the Xbox, plus Nintendo finally coming out with a disc console (Gamecube), Sega simply couldn't compete and bowed out of consoles.

      It would have been an uphill battle, but if Sega could have included a DVD drive, secured more 3rd party support, and, most importantly, stop all the company infighting, they could have actually had a chance. The true history of the Dreamcast is this: SEGA messed up during the Mega Drive later years and tried pushing extra hardware such as the Sega CD and 32X, both which were better left on paper alone and instead, they should have focused from as early as 1992 on the true next generation, being the Saturn. Had they made their home work and released the console in late 1994 with 30 great launch titles across all genres, with over a year of development each, and a good Sonic game among them, then ensuring Namco, Square, Enix, Konami exclusive contracts and all arcade hits on their platform. Specially closing a smart deal when Sony approached then a good while before they decided to go alone and make their own console, the Dreamcast would have been launched in 2001 or even 2002, with a more powerful hardware, solid third party support and possibly a decent controller. The Dreamcast was literally rushed to the market and was, before anything, SEGA's desperation materialized as a product. Nintendo screwed up so bad with their decisions regarding the N64, they lost 95% of their third party support from their previous giants, the NES and specially the SNES, which was the king of RPGs and all genres across the board. The N64 lost even to the Saturn by a large margin, but you know why the N64 managed to sell over 32 million units? Nintendo did what SEGAdidn't, they actually supported the machine up to 2001, even considered a dead horse compared to their competition, they just kept the machine going, while the Saturn was abandoned at the end of 97. It comes to show how SEGA was arrogant to the breaking point, the CEO which led the Genesis to the top charts, Kalinske said himself that by SEGA ignoring Sony's partnership with the upcoming 32-bit machine is one, if not the greatest fiasco in the business as a whole. You see, the Dreamcast couldn't even keep up with the Playstation original, a console released at the same time as the Saturn, the PS1 received sequels and new games way up after the Dreamcast discontinuation, and I mean hundreds of titles, specially if we include many Japan-only releases.
    If the Dreamcast is nostalgic to someone, we still can't ignore what actually happened, and we should consider what could have happened if SEGA followed Nintendo's steps, they saw SEGA releasing addons in the early 90's and they knew just by observing that wasn't the way and by keeping up the then N64 dead horse going, they succeeded and are still on the market today. The Master System, the Saturn and the Dreamcast never reached their true potential. And if you're familiar with the homebrew efforts, the Genesis could even receive great ports of much heavier arcade games such as Street Fighter Alpha 2 and King of Fighters '98.

      I agree, though one of the reasons Sega wasn't able to continue on with the Dreamcast while Nintendo could with the N64 was that Sega just didn't have the money. Had they pushed on with the Dreamcast, and not "cut there losses" there's a really good chance they wouldn't be around today. Sega was too impatient and had too much conflict within the company to get there shit together and got let behind. It's sad, but true;) Thanks for watching!!

      Yes, I agree there, Nintendo had more money, but SEGA was king of the arcades since the mid 80's, basically unrivaled in terms of innovation and high-end hardware. Nintendo lost a huge chunk of their income in the 32 and 128 bit eras, but they didn't suffer from internal mismanagement. Companies need to respect their costumers and those who bought the N64 had new software until 2001. If SEGA didn't drop the 32-bit ball and supported the Saturn they would have surpassed the N64, a solid second place. Let's also consider that what makes a console is the amount of great games and continuation of recognizable franchises it gets, and since Sony's machine didn't have an ego back then and it was cheaper to release software on, the then two giants basically gave Sony what they needed to succeed. Sony didn't have a clue the PS1 would get half the the recognition and success it did, it was a lucky first hit, over 100mi units sold. It's all about good games, in the end. My brothers and I chose the Saturn and we love the console, but I clearly remember in 1998 how things were barely being released for the console, when I first saw the Dreamcast, SEGA had lost its identity in many forms, I didn't know this back then, but looking back, it makes sense. My older brother bought and Xbox and my other two brothers a PS2 each, SEGA was no more.

So the PlayStation’s success was as not lucky, it was deserved and I choose PlayStation back then and have no regrets but I do wish I had a Saturn alongside my PlayStation.

    SEGA may have left the console market, but it achieved it's primal goal with the Dreamcast. To finally bring arcade quality games in your household.
    When it's spine was broken from the PS2, I was pissed at Sony for competition killing. But it turned out to be a respected competitor, along with the Xbox (Dreamcast 2) & the GameCube,which made this 6th gaming generation by far, the best generation. This is when I stopped moving forward to continuing my gaming experience, cause the games ever since, became playable movies that you direct.

    • @PredatorUpHill

      This Yank myth needs to die, the Xbox was never Dreamcast 2. The closest there was to a Dreamcast 2 was codenamed 'Receivership' internally within Sega in Europe/Asia.
      The Xbox was a Yank made console by Yank company Microsoft, and they were able to do that after learning the industry by supplying Sega with a custom version of Windows (hence the small 'Microsoft Windows CE' logo on the front right corner of the Dreamcast to the far side of the large SEGA logo on the front), Microsoft did that as their trojan horse, it was a way Microsoft could work undercover and learn how the gaming industry worked internally and gather intel and insight for their own future ambition.

    The real irony must be that, thanks to the ease of circumventing the Dreamcast's piracy protection, making homebrew stuff and testing on real hardware is super easy. I remember that it sold for around 700 BRL in 1999-2000 (~360 USD) down here in Brazil, which was super expensive (minimum wage was 151BRL). I don't even know if that price was gray market or an official release, as TecToy did officially release all previous Sega consoles, including the ill fated Saturn.
    Executive meddling, mismanagement and rivalry between America and Japan have always caused severe problems, even during its Mega Drive/Genesis peak. That the company found some success despite all that is a real miracle, I'd say.

    Basically it comes down to 2 core issues. Sega were loosing money on every console sold (nothing new) but they weren’t making money on the software because it was easy to bypass the security verification and Sega launched at the height of worldwide broadband rollout, which meant pretty much everyone was using Napster to download music, movie and games. Also Sega failed to pivot towards as being an household entertainment device hence why PS2 sold so well, and both Sega Dreamcast and Gamecube didn’t do well with casual gamers. I know 4 female friends who’ve bought the PS2 and then PS3 to use it as a DVD/Blu Ray player. I don’t think the console would have survived with these 2 core issues even if it had the support from EA, Square or Konami. All the games would have just been copied for free.

Unfortunately, due to Sega's many missteps after the Genesis and before the Dreamcast, they lost too much market share and mind share to survive. Stellar launch lineup and really solid hardware, but too many loyal Sega customers had been burned too many times by underwhelming and under supported hardware to trust Sega by the time Dreamcast came out. If true, then i understand why that meant a lot to me...
      As a kid, rarely someone would gave you the money you needed to truly 'enjoy' the game. (as it's in an racade's nature, to lose)
      So actually, as a kid, looking at arcade machines game's graphics whas like looking at a different form of currency.
      Where to get the currency as a kid?
      The Dreamcast's arrival, was that currency.
      You even didn't have to put a coin trough the wall at home.
      I could just press start, forever...
      That must be the reason the Dreamcast meant a lot to me, but i'm not sure.
      There could be thousands of reasons...
      If this would happen to a lot of people at the same time globally, then it MUST be the reason, the Dreamcast is responsible for the death of the arcades.
      If true, then the death of the arcades, was just the consequent of it's release.
      So no, there is no blame.
      In this scenario, if the arcades already started dying, then the Dreamcast, was the virtual headshot to that industry.
      🤏😎

    This rambling comment is brought to you by holiday weekend sleep deprivation.
    Dreamcast wasn't my first preorder (Nintendo 64 won that title), but it was the first I actually waited in line for at launch (Toys R Us called to tell me to come pick up my N64 a week ahead of street date, so that one was a complete surprise). Waited outside the mall on that cool September night for the midnight launch. They let me pick up my preorder for Final Fantasy VIII shortly before closing, so I spent a good three hours in line just reading the manual over and over. SoulCalibur and official VMUs were sold out by the time I made it to the register, but I went home with Sonic Adventure, Power Stone, Hydro Thunder, a third-party memory card in lieu of a VMU, and I decided at the last second to spend the money I had allocated for SoulCalibur on Tokyo Xtreme Racer in its absence. I played Sonic Adventure first of course, and then Power Stone and Hydro Thunder. I don't think I actually played Tokyo Xtreme Racer before I went to bed, but I definitely played it the entirety of the following night. I lost all track of time just running laps around the C1, grinding up a garage to take on faster and faster opponents. It's such a simple game, but even after acquiring SoulCalibur several weeks later, TXR remains unironically my favorite launch title, and a game I still play today.
    Dreamcast is and forever will be my favorite console of all time. Dreamcast games have a way of standing out as Dreamcast games in the most endearing way; even if you've never heard of a particular game, you can just tell that it's a Dreamcast game by looking at it. I can feel nostalgia for a game I've never played before just because of that. After suffering through the warping and jittery proto-3D games of Saturn and PlayStation, I finally had something at home that didn't just look as smooth and solid as the arcade Daytona USA and Ridge Racer, it looked better. I get warm fuzzies every time I turn one on. Maybe less so if there's a VMU with a dead battery plugged in at the time, but you get what I mean.
    I married the first person I played Chu Chu Rocket with.
    Skies of Arcadia is unquestionably my favorite game for the console, but I must admit that I more frequently play its updated port on Gamecube. The Gamecube version may have worse audio (and some worse visuals in some spots), but the additions (and less frustrating encounter rate) really make up for it. I do go back to the Dreamcast version every so often though, just to treat myself to the proper music. If there's any Dreamcast game I'd like to see a remaster of, it's Skies of Arcadia.

    • @retrojakexy
      @retrojakexy  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      TXR was more awesome than it had any right to be, and I game I regret not speaking more about in this video! It was a very unique game at the time, and I sunk more time into it than I ever thought I would. The Gamecube version of SoA isn't bad by any means, and I totally agree that the improved encounter rate is actually better. The other additions are fine, though not worth the "upgrade", but the encounter rate is a great improvement😁 Thanks for watching!!

    I always thought that Metropolis Street racer was better than the project Gotham games that came later on!?
    With the fastest car in Metropolis Street racer being the R34 skyline that you unlocked at the very end, the developers did a very good job at imitating the physics for all the cars in the game to keep them all realistic and feeling real to a player that knew how to race a car in real life..
    My immediate problem with the following project Gotham games is that, while some of the cars in the game were fun to drive, they must have lost some of the original developers from Metropolis Street racer because of the game did not maintain that realistic physics feeling.. and that is why I played Metropolis Street racer all the way to 100% completion and have never even beat more than a few races in any project Gotham game…
    Metropolis Street racer was more of an even package, that was also very realistic whereas project Gotham was all over the place?

      MSR was, and still is, an awesome game, and PGR was, imo, a solid follow up. It did become more "arcady" though, which did make the formula loose a bit of its charm. I get why they did it; to make it more accessible to a broader audience, but I'm with you in wishing they had retained some of the originals realism. PGR was really good (especially PGR2), but MSR was like nothing else😃 Thanks for watching!!

    Sega could have still been a hardware maker today if it weren't for their incompetent leadership. They were actually killing Nintendo at one point and fell to a classic case of hubris. Started with the mega drive which was so poorly done. Then they rushed out the Saturn to try and compensate but in their haste missed the fact everyone was doing 3D now and instead made the Saturn suck at doing 3d. Then again in desperation to recover from the Saturn they rushed the Dreamcast out knowing full damn well the ps2, Xbox and Gamecube were coming. Thinking they could get a head start but it's a marathon not a sprint. 3 Strikes and youre out basically. It sucks so much because the Dreamcast was amazing and will forever hold a special place in my heart but if they could have just waited to get it right and launch alongside the ps2 with better everything than gaming history would probably be totally different right now imo. Complete and total failure from management who had endless amounts of talent to work and with and just squandered it.

    • @retrojakexy

      The only time they beat Nintendo was in North America around the time of 1990-1992 which is when the Super NES was at its early stage. In the end they lose the war, at least the Mega Drive still had Brazil all to themselves.

    • @PredatorUpHill
      @PredatorUpHill ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@VOAN Sega beat Nintendo loads of times, in Europe, they were ahead of Nintendo for two entire generations with the Sega Master System, and then the Sega Mega Drive. And in Asia even the Sega Saturn was ahead of the Nintendo 64 the entire duration of the 5th generation, it was even ahead of the PlayStation there for most of the time it was out before the Dreamcast arrived, up to 1997, it was when Square put Final Fantasy VII on PSX that year that the PSX finally started to get competitive with the Sega Saturn, but by that point Sega had already moved on internally with Dreamcast development and launched the Segata Sanshiro marketing campaign to keep the Saturn market viable up till at least 2000. You're thinking entirely from a Yank perspective, when America was generally Sega's worst performing market overall in comparison to the rest of the major markets of the world.

    I realise that this is a video about the Dreamcast and not the Saturn, and I don't entirely disagree with your summary of the Saturn, but it's image in the western world is a little different from Japan for a number of reasons, and SoA and SoJ being on a completely different page was part of the problem IMO - which would definitely fit under the banner of 'mismanagement' - but we could argue it wasn't necessarily 'mismanaged' in Japan, even though global image would probably have had some impact on 3rd party support in Japan.

    • @retrojakexy
      @retrojakexy  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You are correct! The Saturn actually did quite well in Japan, outselling the N64 (which I talk about in my N64 video, shamless promotion over🤪), and even outselling the PlayStation up until FF7 released. Sega not being able to bring all their international teams together was a horrible case of mismanagement... just imagine what they could have done if they could have just got everybody on the same page and managed the entire company effectively!! Thanks for watching😄 I love the Saturn btw🤪

    • @Ruylopez778
      @Ruylopez778 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@retrojakexy It seems to me that SoA wanted to do their own thing, and repeatedly defied SoJ. Additionally, the kind of games that were popular in Japan were and are sometimes different. The fact that SoA rushed out a lot of crap games isn't 'mismanagement' by SoJ, IMO. You can't force the US dept to do what you want.
      I think key people at SoA wanted to get Sega out of the hardware business altogether, and they didn't have the arcade market to fall back on either. They appear to have repeatedly undermined SoJ - while SoJ repeatedly snubbed SoA.
      A lot of this is just down to different appeal for western and Japanese audiences.
      I'd argue much of the 'mismanagement' was on SoA, and their own disinterest in porting over games from Japan, and being complacent after their success with the Genesis.
      SoA also damaged the brand with the crap on Sega CD and 32X and horrible marketing strategy, that had nothing to do with SoJ.

    • @PredatorUpHill
      @PredatorUpHill ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You bought one at $499 on 9/9/99? Sounds like you bought an import then, because it didn't launch in Australia until the 30th of November 1999, after two delays.
      It wasn't measured by Sega themselves so we don't really know what the exact end result was, we only have the launch inventory from retailers, but the reason Sega didn't measure it in Australia at launch is because again they outsourced it to another company, just like they did with Grandstand for the SG-1000 (early 1st form Master System), and Tonka in America for the Master System.
      In Australia the Dreamcast was handled by Ozisoft rather than Sega directly themselves, like in Asia, Europe (Eurasia) and even North America this time. Though I do remember reading from the UK (Scotland (Northern Great Britain)) about how bad the Australian situation and reception was, one UK publication I still have stated it was due to it being heavily delayed several times at first once after the other and then massive shortages of units being distributed when it did arrive, that along with the higher price and limited software stock, Internet compatibility and launch game availability, then delayed again for various reasons.
      In short, it was a bit of a mess overall in hindsight to put it lightly, and that as well as only six of the thirty planned launch games were available for purchase on day one - and none of them were even first-party Sega software.
      Apparently it was Steve O'Leary who represented Ozisoft, and he did explain the situation at launch by saying that it was because of the Australian Customs Service impounding all the supplied launch software, including demo discs, because they didn't bother to label their country of origin; Ozisoft had received them just two days before the launch day, which also meant only a few games that were catalogued and prepared for shipment in time were available on day one.
      But O'Leary of Ozisoft did also say that the Dreamcast's high demand in other markets had reduced the number of peripherals allotted to the Australian region as well, so it is a testament also of how well the Dreamcast was doing everywhere else - and it's important to acknowledge that because New Zealand counted as the same market as Australia and was handled in that territory by Ozisoft as well, and even though Ozisoft just operated these territories, they were still using PAL varients of the Dreamcast (the UK and European version with the Blue Swirl logo), and the blue Swirl PAL Dreamcast version was not assigned to just one nation like the red swirl US NTSC version was, so that meant much more blue swirl PAL Dreamcasts were needed for all the UK nations of Britain and all these European nations (which has double the population of the USA), so naturally, this would also affect the available stock for Australia and New Zealand too. But again, the better the Dreamcast did in PAL territories, the worse the launch in Australia was inevitably going to be because it would also mean less availability in time for the big day.
      It was a big ask for the average Australian to invest, though of course the most loyal Sega die hard veterans would buy it no matter what of course, though obviously it would eventually do much better than just 13 units, but that was the launch day, and the launch makes an important first impression to a degree, so it's fair to say for the Dreamcast that as good as it did elsewhere at launch, it was not a good start in Australia.
