I Bought a Sega Dreamcast in 2024

  • One console I've always considered getting was the very last console made by Sega before becoming just game developers, the Sega Dreamcast. The home console that brought us such amazing games like Sonic Adventure 1, Sonic Adventure 2, Sonic Shuffle, Jet Set Radio, Crazy Taxi, Power Stone, and so many more. While the console didn't do well during it's lifetime, it's still loved by a loyal community today that continue to play and enjoy what it has to offer. Growing up I played on the PlayStation and Nintendo consoles, so this is my very first Sega console. So how did it go buying a console that was released in 1999 in 2024? Lets find out.

I just want to say thank you for all the support on this video. It’s been fun reading people stories on getting their Dreamcast, and all the game recommendations. Many of you also gave me so much advice on the console and reasons for why mine had some issues. And here is where I have some bad news, as some of you mentioned, my disc drive is going, so I can either replace it, or do what many suggested, getting a GDEMU. I would love to obtain the real games for a collection, but learning the cds can deteriorate, the best choice to make is going with GDEMU. It’ll take time to receive it but once it’s in I plan to make more videos on this amazing console. Plus now I can get every game you all suggested. Shenmue, crazy taxi, rayman 2, resident evil, sonic, etc.. Thank you all again for liking, subscribing, and commenting, it’s mean a lot to me.

Just some advice on the GDEMU, most ones you get will be clones and you absolutely should not upload the firmware on them or it will brick. There are two games that won't work perfectly on older firmwares, but it'll be fine. One of the Resident Evil games (has a patch to fix it) and Skies of Arcadia (skip the intro and the game will work fine). Happy Dreamcast playing, I plan on adding my Dreamcast story to the comments after work!

@@NottJoeyOfficial Thanks for the advice. I've seen that most GDEMU's sold online now are mostly clones, I picked up a 5.20.5 version which I heard fixes issues with games like RE. I don't imagine I'll update the firmware for it, as long as it plays the games I want it should be good.

It’s so nice to hear about younger generations getting into older consoles. Especially Sega who was such a huge player in the 90s. I grew up with Genesis, Saturn and Dreamcast and couldn’t recommend them enough. As far as recommendations go I’m going to recommend Soul Caliber, Shenmue and House of the Dead. All are pretty affordable still. Also if you have access to a VGA adapter connect the Dreamcast up to a desktop monitor. The picture is so clear it could be mistaken for modern gaming. I also really recommend the Saturn library if you like anything with Japanese influence

    Nice video.
As a kid that bought that console a year after it launched, I was marveled at the time with the graphics. I had seen some comercials on the tv, I had a cousin that had a PS1and you could see the jump in graphical fidelity. I'd say this period, 3rd gen (nes) to 6th gen(ps2) were the most incredible for consumers as the jumps in graphics and the size of games were balooming. It felt like witchcrafty. I grew with a megadrive/genesis and the jump to the ps1 was incredible for me. Me and my friends were always in awe while playing winning eleven and looking at those blocky polygons thinking: "My god, look that is indeed Roberto Carlos!". Them the jump to the dreamcast/ps2 was even crazier... I remember thinking we couldn´t get more real than what we had on the ps2.
A point I would like to make because I find it fascinating is the following:
Sega was in dire straits since the mid 90's thanks to the saturn. Looking at all the books, media and everything I could find in this strange hobby of mine, sega put itself into a costly corner based on marketing and edginess in the united states market. Consoles are already very costly to R&D and put into the market, but marketing is even more especially when you build your strategy the way sega did. They invested a lot of money thinking on recovering it with game sales but there weren't enough of it and when the ps2 launched in japan sega was basically bankrupt.
Actually, were not for their president at the time, isao okawa, they would have gone under and probably be bought by microsoft and scrapped like rare was. Sega was never meant to launch the dreamcast, he wanted to bail out of the console industry during the megadrive era because of the cost. Yet when push came to shove, he financed the R&D of the dreamcast and did everything he could to make the console sucessful. Sadly, as stated, it didn´t work. He literally forgave the debt and gave back all the shares he had from sega, which amounted to more than 500 million dollars, soon after passing because of cancer. No joke, that move saved sega from bankrupcy. I am always impressed by the balls of sega to die trying than to fold and give up. Not financially responsible, but admirably badass.

Just got recommended this recently, massive Dreamcast fan here, bought one pre-owned around 2001 in the UK for dirt cheap, with SA1 and No VMU for a week or so, still had a blast on it, its a fantastic piece of gaming history, considering at the time it was mind blowing to play on, even with the Xbox, Gamecube and PS2 on offer, it still put up a decent fight, especially if you enjoyed online play, OR just liked the selection of games on offer compared to the other consoles, still rate it as the most fun I have EVER had with a console all these years later, still play on mine, so it was fun to see someone much younger experience it for the first time and enjoy it, as for the "internet" feature, you probably wont be able to use it now, or may have to use a work around someway, BUT it allowed you to upload your chao to a adoption service, so others could then download your chao into their garden, it was really interesting, basically like Ebay for chao in terms of its layout, you can probably find some videos or images of it online.

Dreamcast was pure magic to me. Sadly, I think it’s fair to say I’ve spent the last few decades chasing that feeling the DC gave me but it’s just never returned. And yeah, nothing lasts forever so if there’s a way to play DC games not on a DC, that’s preferable.
I don’t think this can be repeated until there’s a massive change in how we game. DC released just as the internet as we now know it was being born and we got online and games together everyone was excited. There was no cynicism or jaded social media, it was all fun. We were focused on games and gaming and those days are just gone.

dreamcast is my 2nd favorite console of all time right behind the ps2. theres such a huge rabbit hole of dreamcast gimmicks that can only be experienced on real hardware too. stuff like the bleemcast emulator, the multitude of vmu minigames, the secret bios menu, vga output support, etc. definitely make sure to get multiple memory cards because they dont have much space, or buy a dreamshell to backup your saves. my personal favorite game on dreamcast is skies of arcadia, a really incredible rpg. make sure you have a revision 0 or revision 1 dreamcast (which you can check on the bottom of the console) to see if your console can read burned cdrs because skies of arcadia is super expensive, or you can get a GDEMU if you have a revision 1 dreamcast but youll have to sacrifice your disc drive. i personally used the yzb rips for skies of arcadia when playing on cdrs

My older brother got a Dreamcast in Christmas of 2000. He was 14 at the time, My older sister was 12, and I was 5 and we were living in the Bronx NYC.
I remember that after we all finished opening our presents, we went over to the tv in the bedroom me and my older sister shared to hook up the dreamcast and see it live for the first time. He played through Emerald Coast in Sonic Adventure and we were all amazed.
There were other games he got / rented as a kid like Power Stone and Shenmue.
There were days when my older brother and sister were at school, and I was home all day with our Mother. I would just pop in the Dreamcast and fool around in Sonic Adventure as Tails.
I bought a Dreamcast again myself in 2015 off ebay. It was a shock with how small the system is and how loud it was to load a game. For a while my older brother and I would go out to retro gaming stores and collect for it. For his birthday, I bought Shenmue and I just let that intro run on repeat until he came into the living room and I could surprise him. We played through Shenmue and laughed at the horrible voice acting… lol. My Brother wondered how it never stood out to him until now.
My brother owns it now since he cares for it more than I do. I’m more into emulating. I actually have a portable emulation machine.

Good that you have the Dreamcast version of SA1 because that causes you to be able to play a good quality version of that game, because just so you know, there's an amount of technical things about SA1 that only the Dreamcast console could handle correctly, so the DX port became (not an enhanced version) a butchered lower quality glitchy version of the original with too many changes!
The Dreamcast was one of the consoles that my parents bought for me when I was a kid and I kept it. In these recent years I got back into using it to play the Sonic Adventure games. I suggest you should try to get that console's version of the Sonic Adventure 2 sequel game. One of the better parts about that version is that when you see the flashback cutscenes, Maria does get shown having eyebrows, her face doesn't get shown with them on it in the ported version. Also in the Dreamcast version of SA2 before the main menu becomes available that game's logo appears similarly to the Sonic 3 movie logo in that 20 seconds teaser trailer that was released in February. I got my Dreamcast back in 1999 and man, I love it. I will never forget playing Sonic Adventure for the first time, hope it works out for you and the console brings you many years of joy!

Helpful tip if you don’t mind getting your hands dirty with finding roms online for the pricier games: check the number in the small bubble next to the word “PAL” or “NTSC” on the underside label. If it’s 0 or 1, that model is capable of playing burned cds without the need for physical modification. Just make sure the rom itself is of a small enough file size to fit on a cd, as the Dreamcast has specialized discs that can hold up to a gigabyte of data as opposed to a cd’s 700 megabytes.

I also recently got a Dreamcast, about a month ago now. I was able to get a first party controller with it, as well as a third party memory card, but I do want to get a VMU at some point.
I haven’t been having the best of luck finding games for it though, because most of the stores I go to only have sports titles. I did manage to find Time Stalkers and Shenmue over the weekend, but the former keeps crashing on me, while the latter flat out doesn’t work. I plan on exchanging them one of these days.
As for games I’d recommend, though I’ve only played the PS2 version, Grandia II is a good RPG if you’re into those. From what I’ve played of Time Stalkers, that game is also fairly decent.

I missed out on having a Dreamcast back in the day. I did grow up in the '90s and I played Sega Genesis although I actually preferred SNES and I played PS1 but I also preferred N64, but I was able to play some Dreamcast thanks to some friends of my brothers who had a dream cast. In the early 2000s my family had a GameCube and I enjoyed that console and one of the first games we got on it because it was an early release on the GameCube was Sonic Adventure 2 battle. So much fun! The first time I played Sonic Adventure 1 was actually at a friend's house on historycast and then Sonic Adventure DX came out for the GameCube I think not that long after and I would get that. I'm definitely much more used to Sonic Adventure DX because that's the one I actually owned and the one I played, but it was Cool to actually play the original song Adventure on the Dreamcast before that. I also did end up playing Sonic Adventure 2 on the Dreamcast as well by playing it on my friend's Dreamcast because he could not figure out how to beat the biolizer boss so I beat it for him

Hydro Thunder is great if you like arcade Racers, and Super Magnetic Neo has kind of a Crash Bandicoot vibe in terms of gameplay. But it's mostly the Sonic Adventure games, Phantasy Star Online (I mostly played it offline solo), and Rayman 2 that I lost associate with Dreamcast.
There's also Dead of Alive 2. I don't play it much but the music and vibe is really nice.

I bought a Dreamcast for around $200 back in 2022 and I honestly have to say it’s a neat little console, not my favorite but it had a lot of potential, especially with the dial up online features. Hell the system even has the ability to use a web browser (albeit if you have the software disc for it)
Most of the time I just play Puyo Pop Fever on it though and Rayman 2 but it’s still pretty neat.
I would say get Puyo Pop Fever/Puyo Puyo Fever but knowing how it’s the last game Sega & Sonic Team produced for the console AND being Japan exclusive, yeah..So I would recommend Chu Chu Rocket, Rayman 2, Samba de Amigo, and of course, Sonic Adventure 2. -Though I don’t know the prices of all the games I said except for Puyo-

So some recommendations are as follows:
Crazy Taxi - nobrainer - one of best arcade games of all times!
Resident Evil Code Veronica - really good classic Resident Evil game
Illbleed - weird and wild horror game - it's crazy
Sonic Adventure 2 is still great
Skies of Arcadia - incredible JRPG for the system
Grandia 2 - another JRPG banger, also for some reason non-DC versions are all buggy and have some issues.
Dead or Alive 2 - great fighting game
Metropolis Street Racer - a predecessor to Project Gotham Racing - really good racing title with highly detailed cars
I think this is enough if you can find them.

Nah that’s crazy, I live in Europe and bought a PAL Dreamcast (of course) for way cheaper than that. I paid about 110 dollars for the Dreamcast itself with my first game Jet Set Radio being 30 dollars. In total it was about 152 dollars with taxes and shipping cost included. The Dreamcast came with all of the needed equipment. The same year I bought another Dreamcast from a different region, an NTSC-U version with no controller but it did have a power converter and av cables. I bought Sonic Adventure 2 with it for only 8 dollars with its case. It was in pristine condition with a bit of dust on it (easy cleaned). It didn’t matter if it came with no controller, as I already had 2 prior. This Dreamcast became over 100 dollars and some change. So in total all of these purchases became approximately 40 dollars more than the price of your Console and game. Unbelievable. My point is that I got luckier than you with the pricing technically.

Good buy sir! Then you said “i had an interest in retro consoles” and that you were SHOCKED Sega made consoles! Oh man… i felt extremely old hearing that. I was a sophomore in high school when Dreamcast came out and clearly remember the real console wars with Genesis and Nintendo when i was younger than that. Man, oh man, you missed out on growing up in a great generation kid.
Edit: side note, it’s insane they had a copy of Super Mario Bros 3 in its original box! No one kept their boxes back when Nintendo games came out! I just kept them in the black plastic sleeves. Also, why didn’t you guys not have a PlayStation memory card?? If this console was retro to you, then that means you must’ve been a kid in the late 2000’s, by then you could get those for a few bucks.

Tips for Dreamcast so when getting a game for it ask the owner to see the back because, they can be burned disks which is not good and too see it is that there is a security ring on the back saying sega something like that it’s hard to see but it’s there.
VMUs have shit battery so there is a VMU 2 that somebody made and it can last very long which is great if you want to play it outside of your house.

hi! I have a couple recommendations for your dreamcast setup if that's okay
the dreamcast is the only console I can think of that supports VGA. if you don't have a crt or anything, buying a dreamcast VGA cable on ebay would be an incredibly large bump in video quality both for your sake and the sake of the recording (you'll have to pick up a generic VGA to HDMI adapter to capture it, though)
if you're interested in dreamcast online stuff, there's actually all sorts of dreamcast revival server things for downloading sa1's dlc again or playing games like quake 3 and PSO online again. you'll have to buy a DreamPI to get those to work, but it's pretty interesting and works with a modern ethernet connection!
and, of course, games. crazy taxi (both 1 and 2), jet set radio, cosmic smash, and chu chu rocket are all great first-party pickups, and I also recommend games like rez, power stone 1 & 2, and if you don't mind buying a light gun, house of the dead is great.
I hope you enjoy!! the dreamcast is an amazing console and it's great seeing fresh eyes on it for once :D

    • @Squiggy
      @Squiggy  20 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

Thanks for the advice, I'll look into the VGA cable, while playing with what I currently have isn't bad to me, the image being stretched I should correct. Already grabbed Crazy Taxi over the weekend (really fun), Jet set radio I do wanna grab. I did learn about the DreamPi and revival servers, if I can I would like to try that out in the future.

I was pretty lucky when I got my dreamcast at vintage stock about a month ago. it was in really nice shape, had all of the original cords, and even got the original controller that was also in really nice shape. and I got all that for $110. granted I ended up having to buy a memory card separately, I think I got a good deal considering the near pristine shape it was in, almost like it was hardly used. I even took it apart and the fan barely had any dust inside. even the disc drive worked properly. heck, I spent more money on 3 games (sonic adventure 1 + 2 and sonic shuffle) than the console itself. the console works great.
I'm sorry to say, but for the condition of the console you got, you got scammed pretty hard, especially since your disc drive seems to be going bad, but I recommend trying to clean to lens first with 91% isopropyl alcohol and a q-tip before going through all the effort of replacing the disc drive.

A tip to Dreamcast Owners, if your Dreamcast sometimes doesn´t read a game, try putting a weight over the lid, not something too heavy, but just something enough to puch the lid down, it seems like the lid even close might not go down fully, might be a bit loose, so you need to put something on it and leave it there and the console will read the game with no problem
