PowerVR worked far better in multi GPU configurations than scanline renderers like AMD or Nvidia's GPUs do. This is because PowerVR breaks the scene up into 16x16 tiles that are rendered in internal on die memory which are collated into an external buffer for display. Because breaking the scene up like this is fundamental to how the PowerVR GPU works it's a relatively simple matter to send every other tile to alternate GPUs for rendering and then collate them into a shared display buffer. The speed increase from adding additional GPUs scales much better than with more traditional GPUs that render one scanline at a time. There is very little additional overhead from splitting the scene between multiple GPUs with PowerVR because it's not doing anything it doesn't already do anyway.
Also, some more fun facts about the NAOMI. Did you know the NAOMI also supports Dreamcast controllers, VMUs and Dreamcast games? The reason why the NAOMI games don't work on the Dreamcast is because they are encrypted. Hence why you need the security chip to make them work. The Dreamcast games however, are not and work fine in the GD ROM drive. While I can't verify whether or not the VMUs work the same with a Dreamcast game, I do know some arcade titles allowed you to plug your own VMU into the cabinet to either unlock extra content, or have exclusive content sent to your VMU for use back at home. Also, I think you may have missed a few things about the NAOMI. 1. The player input for the JVS standard is done via the two USB ports on the back of the machine. Unless your cabinet is JVS, you'll need the i/o board shown in the video. Also note that while the ports look like USB, you cannot plug other peripherals into them as they won't work. 2. For the Naomi 1, you can actually use the power from the Capcom i/o board to power the Naomi instead of using a separate power supply. You could also make your own cable and use an ATX power supply, though I would only recommend doing so if you know the pinout of both standards completely. Edit: 3. Just to note, for the Net DIMMs you need to have a Rev H BIOS on the Naomi and for the more 'questionable' route, you'll also need a Zero Key as while said game are decrypted, they still require some form of security chip to work.
Point 2 is incorrect. It's the Naomi 1 that doesn't work without the external power to run GDROM games. Naomi 2 doesn't need an external PSU for a GDROM setup. Also, I never changed my BIOS revision on my Net DIMM and all games worked fine.
This is awesome, I always knew of the NAOMI but really didn't know too much information about it aside from being used in arcades and utilizing GD-ROMs.
I've worked on Arcade Hardware on and off since I was 14 in 1989. I have many fond memories of Naomi Games. Side note the Sega Chihiro (Xbox Based Arcade Hardware) and Triforce (Gamecube Based) both use the same GD Rom Drive as the Naomi.
@@SuperKillerdreams Generally no - the main issue is that the Naomi has twice as much main and video RAM as the Dreamcast, as well as 4 times the sound RAM. This normally resulted in ports to the Dreamcast having simplified geometry, textures or both. The much smaller sound RAM also meant that the DC was restricted to using less sound samples than the Naomi - but this was partially offset by the ability of the DC to stream audio from the GD-ROM drive, which the Naomi couldn't.

Melty Blood: Act Cadenza came out on Naomi. I remember seeing an actual MB:AC cabinet in Rochester NY when I visited there back in 2012... but it was out of commission with a bad power supply (the owner of Hammer Girl said it was a Japanese power supply using a step converter). I was so let down, it would have been the high light of my trip since I started the original Melty Blood fan translation projects into English, and absolutely felt responsible for that cabinet making it all the way to the US. lol
@@TBasianeyes True, our modern-day tech should be able to down size the processing capacity of the Dreamcast into a portable sized board and we can house all the GD-ROM games in a massive SSD harddrive, or hell even burn them into a big ROM chip. So then the question will likely be: "How much will that cost to manufacture versus how many people will buy it?" IN the end, it is never about "yeah, we can do that because we're technologically advanced AF!" It's always about "So, how much money can we make here? What's in it for me and my shareholders?" The sad part is the dreamcast only died because the ps2 was the cheapest dvd player.... There was nothing wrong with the games or the console just the fact it didn't play DVDs 😪
Not only that but I had a friend that was a manager at EBX in the Mall of America (high end EB Games) and he said basically Sony threatened retailers with shorting supply of the PS2 at launch if they didn't give them double the display space and push the hell out of it.

"There was nothing wrong with the games or the console just the fact it didn't play DVDs" So I guess we'll conveniently ignore the part about the Dreamcast console using cheaply made components, specifically the GDROM drive which had a high rate of failure? Don't get me wrong the Dreamcast is easily one of my favorite consoles of all time, but lets not sugar coat the fact that there was definitely a number of hardware related flaws outside of a lack of a DVD player that prevented the Dreamcast from having any chance against a much more premium, built to last console like the ps2.
Dreamcast had less buttons than a PS1 or PS2. This made some ports problematic, due to a shortage of input buttons. Mortal Kombat Gold, Soul Reaver, & WWF Attitude are all examples of this, which made some Dreamcast games more clunky than on a Sony console. The controllers were piss poor for fighters in general, too. I always used a dual shock controller adapter, but then you got the memory cards that go into the controller; Gotta have a special controller adapter with a memory card port for save data.

A friend of mine bought some Sega Naomi machines without the JVS-IO boards; I ended up creating my own JVS-IO board from the JVS-IO specs. Any ATX supply will work, you just need to buy the JST connectors, they're readily available from places like Mouser or Digikey. A cool thing about the Naomi, is that both the game PCB and the motherboard PCB use double-sided connectors, with both boards out of their case, you can install the game PCB on the back of the motherboard; very useful when you're troubleshooting and repairing, and need access to the area that would usually be covered by the game cart.
im sitting in a desk made from 2 initial d 3 cabinets that originally had NAOMI2's in them (dont get mad guys the monitors where blown) You have to have a "Zero Key" in order to ACTUALLY netboot to the NetDIMM units. and if you are using a Pi you need a crossover cable to directly connect to the NAOMI. as a side note. you can actually link up 2 NAOMIS via optical for multiplayer games!
I'd love to see that desk. I have 2 Initial D Stage 2 cabinets and netbooting on both machines is awesome. I know the feeling with the monitors btw. My master's monitor went out but I gotta do what I can to bring it back to life.
vectrex weve spoke about my machines in the comment section of your video about your ID2 cabs, lol i can prolly see about getting a picture and sending it to you on like twitter
This was an awesome video once again. I learned at lot and will be looking to buy one of these set ups soon. It will look awesome through VGA on my 2003 Samsung 63" professional plasma. It was $20,000 new and still looks amazing.
You have to make sure to set the Naomi hardware to the proper VGA khz setting output. Most arcade hardware outputs VGA at 15khz. Most consumer grade VGA sends out a 31khz signal. If I recall there are pin settings on the Naomi board to do that. After that you would have a better chance at HDMI output, but only with a standard VGA to HDMI adapter. The Naomi does not use the standard proprietary dreamcast AV port so the consumer VGA box wouldn't even work with the Naomi.
Great video. I distinctly remember playing a NASCAR game, with the full yellow racing cage, that ran on Hikaru actually, but I still think about that game from time to time.
Ya I loved the Naomi but was hard to repair at times. My GDROM went out. That net boot thing is cool and welcome. I worry about consoles and arcades that used optical. I have Sega CD games that are getting bit rot now.
The problem with the Dreamcast was when it was released. It came out in 1999 and was high tech for the time, but by 2000 it was a "90's" console. By the time the PS2 came out, it seemed outdated. They should have pushed the release back to 2000.
PS2 was brought as a cheap DVD player when it was first launched at that time with very few games. It was SEGA CEO decision to stop Dreamcast production resulting other third parties to stop their development of games for Dremcast.
It's like the dreamcast hardware still lived on until 2009 , great video MVG. radirgy did come out on the Dreamcast as well as a few official titles like Under Defeat think that was around 2006. I interested now on looking what titles came out on the Naomi but were also available on consoles . Owning a namoi will be great perhaps a consolelised modded one with an exsternal hard drive would be the dream
I bought one when I was in 9th grade back in 2013. I just love the rich late 90s history it carries and its Sega's last ever console. Its sitting in my closet, darn now I have to play it 😁❤
Awesome video again buddy. The Dreamcast and NAOMI were developed together, PURPOSEFULLY to make the games identical when ported. The NAOMI 2 you have there is an upgraded system with extra memory and two graphic chips, just like the System 22 Namco hardware was basically two Playstation 1's gaffer taped together. If I remember, there were only a handful of NAOMI 2 games, including F355 to support the three screens. The Atomiswave was a modified version of it I know almost NOTHING about, any chance of a video on that one day?
Yes, it's possible to netboot Atomiswave games on a NAOMI. But the 2 racing games don't work, at least in my experience. It probably has something to do with the I/O boards.

I never saw an Naomi before and it still gave me Nostalgia. Your Videos are Magic. Im Excited for more of your videos! Thumbs up for the
nice content and the awesome retro style background music
I've never knew an arcade Sega Dreamcast existed. Very interesting topic. I'd love to check more of your content.
Hey man props. I can see you put a lot into your videos. It’s appreciated
Woah that Sega Naomi set up is sweet. Would love to see a future video where it's put into a really cool custom cabinet
A friend of mine bought some Sega Naomi machines without the JVS-IO boards; I ended up creating my own JVS-IO board from the JVS-IO specs. Any ATX supply will work, you just need to buy the JST connectors, they're readily available from places like Mouser or Digikey. A cool thing about the Naomi, is that both the game PCB and the motherboard PCB use double-sided connectors, with both boards out of their case, you can install the game PCB on the back of the motherboard; very useful when you're troubleshooting and repairing, and need access to the area that would usually be covered by the game cart.
im sitting in a desk made from 2 initial d 3 cabinets that originally had NAOMI2's in them (dont get mad guys the monitors where blown) You have to have a "Zero Key" in order to ACTUALLY netboot to the NetDIMM units. and if you are using a Pi you need a crossover cable to directly connect to the NAOMI. as a side note. you can actually link up 2 NAOMIS via optical for multiplayer games!
too bad YT doesnt let us embed images lol
I'd love to see that desk. I have 2 Initial D Stage 2 cabinets and netbooting on both machines is awesome. I know the feeling with the monitors btw. My master's monitor went out but I gotta do what I can to bring it back to life.
vectrex weve spoke about my machines in the comment section of your video about your ID2 cabs, lol i can prolly see about getting a picture and sending it to you on like twitter
in fact check your twitter my dude. theres some pics sitting there for you and yes you can share them
still mad
This was an awesome video once again. I learned at lot and will be looking to buy one of these set ups soon. It will look awesome through VGA on my 2003 Samsung 63" professional plasma. It was $20,000 new and still looks amazing.
I have a naomi 1 and a ringwide. it's good to see these types of videos. With more info, more people will get into arcade equipment.
As this is more or less a Dreamcast, could you use one of those modern Dreamcast VGA to HDMI adaptors instead?
seems possible
I honestly think it would work provided it connects to dsub and not the Dreamcast AV Port.
Hello Mr Bundy
You have to make sure to set the Naomi hardware to the proper VGA khz setting output. Most arcade hardware outputs VGA at 15khz. Most consumer grade VGA sends out a 31khz signal. If I recall there are pin settings on the Naomi board to do that. After that you would have a better chance at HDMI output, but only with a standard VGA to HDMI adapter. The Naomi does not use the standard proprietary dreamcast AV port so the consumer VGA box wouldn't even work with the Naomi.
Larry I see more comments than videos from you now 😑
Awesome vid man. I've gotta pick up a Naomi soon. I have a dreamcast in my Aerocity now.
I LOVE that I found this channel. Really well done videos about my niche interest. Thank you!
I do enjoy nerding out on Monday after work and this video has hit the spot. I love a good MVG Monday.
That The House of The Dead voicing at the start always cracks me up
Ha, just because something's fairly old doesn't mean it's gone, LOL!
My parents are almost 80 and they're still here (for the moment)!
That's pretty awesome. Never knew about this hardware and especially how to come across it for home purchase. So cool. Great stuff man.
> Sega made the Naomi
> Sega owns Atlus
> There's an atlus character named Naomi
Hmmm
Dreamcast and Gamecube were my favourite consoles man. Both underrated.
Super cool, I was actually telling someone yesterday how virtua tennis 2 is one of my most wanted cabs. Good timing
Very cool, was only talking about this yesterday while playing some dreamcast.
Great video. I distinctly remember playing a NASCAR game, with the full yellow racing cage, that ran on Hikaru actually, but I still think about that game from time to time.
man where did you come from ? you're such a great youtube surprise and expert, love you !
The quality of your content is outstanding!. Thanks!
We made many of the same conclusions. Nice video!
Ya I loved the Naomi but was hard to repair at times. My GDROM went out. That net boot thing is cool and welcome. I worry about consoles and arcades that used optical. I have Sega CD games that are getting bit rot now.
Super Cool. Great video, thanks for sharing your experience with this arcade gear. Dreamcast is still one of my favorite systems of all time.
Oh, MAN! I've been waiting for this . . .
Your videos are a double-edged sword. I love them, but they make me want to buy so much old hardware...
What a great review and production. Thanks a lot.
Please do one of these videos on the Triforce
9:31 Bro I thought I got rickrolled so hard...
what good memories !!! thanks man such a nice video keep on !!
Watching this video was surprisingly helpful in setting up NAOMI/2 emulation. It makes sense when you see the real thing.
The NAOMI2 was truly state of the art for it's time and many of it's games still look glamorous (Virtual-On Force is a favorite.)
Great video, wasn't aware of this missing link.
Naomi Games are awesome and well playable on PC. Love that.
Great content absolutely love your channel!
That message about the Dreamcast not playing Naomi discs sounds so much like a Dutch guy. Note: I am Dutch.
I bought one when I was in 9th grade back in 2013. I just love the rich late 90s history it carries and its Sega's last ever console. Its sitting in my closet, darn now I have to play it 😁❤
That's amazing! Never knew it existed. I still have a working SEGA Dreamcast.
Great video! You really explained everything clearly about the Naomi system!
great video, as every video. high quality. i love your videos :)
Would love to see all these exclusives on a modern disc someday, especially Planet Harriers. Great video!
Thanks for the hardware tour and game footage!
Sega was always kings of Arcade games 4 ever and mate you always make great videos
Neat, I want more videos like this. Atari arcade hardware of this period would be cool.
Would love to see this revisited at some point with things like the OpenJVS and the Multi JVS projects.
Love your videos mate, keep up with the good work.
I love seeing esoteric hardware. Very cool, great video.
We have a Crazy Taxi with a NAOMI at the studio. I've been meaning to fish it out of the cab and mess around with it.
This is...blowing my mind. Very interesting stuff, didnt know the naomi had so much hardware
I almost missed my son's birth watching this in the hospital cafeteria😆... now am finishing it up with my son in my arms ...
YUNVMY COOLNAME Cool!Congrats!
Lmao congrats
Congratulations!
Jammill Khursheed Awesome!👍
Yes, it's possible to netboot Atomiswave games on a NAOMI. But the 2 racing games don't work, at least in my experience. It probably has something to do with the I/O boards.
f355 was naomi 1 and games were not totally identical, f355 for example had better textures in arcade
gamer gamer no f3FF is 💯% arcade perfect it even says on the back of the game case usazuki made sure the port was 💯% arcade perfect on the Dreamcast and it was flawlessly true, so sorry your Wayy wrong
Awesome video, thanks for doing it! :)
Pretty cool, can't wait to see what you show us next week as well
These videos always make my mondays better
Hopefully in the future some company will come out with an Ever drive type of thing for the carts and security chip keys.
Oh my god, the Naomi 2 graphics are so good for the year 2000
Sega Naomi Error Message on Dreamcast:
"This is a game disc for Naomi's GD-ROM system. You cannot play this with the Dreamcast. The first track contains game data, so do not play this with a CD player."
Wow, Why I love your channel, always learning new stuff. Never knew the 360 was vga compatible? I use a vga to HDMI adapter on my monitor but I have an old 360 which I've had modded so dang I'm gonna check if there's a vga input on it. Might be a better or more appropriate option given my monitors outputs. Hell yeh! I just got a USB full of every shmup from a friend to use on it too..might try hooking it up now. Great vid m8!!!!!
I have hdmi for my old 360, forget vga
