I used to work at EB games and the Dreamcast launch was amazing. People were really excited that Sega was back with what appeared to be an awesome platform. We had tons of preorders and most people that ordered a DC purchased multiple games as well. Great video, there are some amazing mods for the Dreamcast. My favorite is the HDMI mod.
Congrats on the Hakko sponsorship. That Soldering station is amazing, I have it. Not too expensive, built like a tank, and the performance is great. Easy to maintain, easy to find tips, etc. Much better than that overpriced proprietary Ifixit soldering kit you were featuring a few months back on here. (No shade to you btw, always nice to see what products are out there, I hadn't heard of the Ifixit soldering kit until you brought it up)
Are you referring to the mod in this video? If so, this is the correct orientation. The side without the notches is the "top"; that's the side with the #1 pin.
My favorite DC Mod is my DCDigital already installed. I also have the battery mod, 40mm Noctua fan, old GDEmu clone in a black Sega Sports unit. A friend who ran a retro store and did mods did it for me for free as a surprise (I was expecting to have to pay) after I did bunch of IT work I for his store. And then he recently passed away, at 30 years old. I don't use my DC as much as I should but I'll never get rid of it because HE did the work, as a gift, and he's gone now.
The Dreamcast was my favorite console. Man I loved this system. I'm too afraid to mess with soldering, but I love watching the channel. I want to mod mine with a gdemu and the HDMI mod.
Having a legit sponsor like Hakko really elevates your channel above pretty much all the others. Good on them for taking you up on that offer, smart of them! Far cry from all the Honey and BetterHelp level of scam sponsors seen pretty much everywhere else on the site.
I love the RetroGEM, usbC psu, and the GDemu mods for the system, while it's not much of a mod, that blue shell looks sick. I also love all the extrs VMU mods -that thing what what I loved the most about the dreamcast back in the day. can't wait for them.
Your channel was always one giant Hakko commercial. I broke down and bought the desoldering gun a while back. It is much better to use than the plunger I was using.
Cool build, always amazes me that there are so many people working on such cool mods for retro systems. I remember my friend got a Dreamcast and i can remember many hours of playing Ready 2 Rumble Boxing and others, was such a great era with so many great titles coming out for consoles and PC, the golden age of gaming imo.
That is some serious dedication to your work when you install an entirely new BIOS chip just for the custom startup splashscreen animation haha. Very nice.
DC had one of the best console launches imho. I could be wrong but I think it was the best selling launch to that point, until the PS2 came out next year.
In 5th grade at launch, having a neighbor who had his online I was blown away, mind you ps2 was out already, could never get one etc..had everything else but a ps2 . I played ps1 games and got a GameShark with fuse vhs tape should google it. The sega launch in Japan was jaw dropping for sega and sonic. Prob the best release I was a part of and the oldest.
@@joekirby9482 no they lost that trust with the Sega Saturn... Most of the hardware in arcades which had direct arcade ports to the home aka the Naomi.
"Eighteen launch games were available in the US Sega set a new sales record by selling more than 225,132 Dreamcast units in 24 hours, earning $98.4 million in what Moore called "the biggest 24 hours in entertainment retail history". Within two weeks, US Dreamcast sales exceeded 500,000." Google is your friend guys. Yes the dreamcast launch was record setting but it still wasnt enough to save sega. Sega was basically dead at that point and they had completely unrealistic numbers they had to hit to warrant support.
I was 16 and I saved up 1 month and half of summer job money. I had $600 for 9.9.99 I still remember going to the mall and picking up my pre order and 2 more games because I still had money left off after getting the DC, 3 controllers, 3 vmu, and 4 games
Oh same, I worked at a bakery all summer and saved up so that I could buy every game I wanted on launch day. Very special console to me for that memory.
Honestly servicing the fan would be a huge help most likely! But I have to say I love the HDMI mod! It would help me in my place to be able to play a little easier. Congratulations on the Hakko sponsor! I know they have great stuff I just don't usually have the money to get it just yet. But someday, it can happen! Happy new year!
For me the biggest mods here are the GDEmu and the PixelGem. Having that quality soldering iron will definitely help with that kind of precision solder work. Integrating classic systems into a modern setup is always a HUGE task, and having an ODE is huge for game backups and homebrew. Case and point: my GameCube has a GCLoader in it and I haven't looked back.
The DC controller was the nay for me. The lack of buttons and the missing second analogue joystick when comparing it to the original PSX Dual Shock controller, i remember thinking to myself and mentioning it the cashier at Sears while purchasing my PSX over the DC that the DC had no chance in this market. I was 11 at the time, aware of how big of a disaster the Saturn was but the lack of buttons when compared to a PlayStation, the DC was dead on arrival so I skipped the DC due to the controller.
I finally got a dreamcast for Christmas so this video is perfect for me! Thanks!! Always love learning about console hardware and mods from you, your videos really help me feel more confident doing this stuff to my own consoles. I want to keep them healthy but I still need to learn how to solder... I definitely got way ahead of myself collecting so many. But I'm excited to learn!! I ordered a flippydrive after watching your video on it and it should be here in January, it'll be my first "hardware" mod ever! And hopefully I'll be doing many more soon after! Merry Christmas!!!
Love my hakko gear! They're some of the most repairable tools I own, with full maintenance, diagnostics, repair steps, and part diagrams with part#'s all included on the manual IN THE BOX. I use cheap sponges and wire, and haven't ever felt scammed by the price of genuine tips. Firm recommendation - congratulations on the sponsorship!
GDEmu has got to be my favorite. In all honesty, it is the best because of how available and easy it is to setup for the great features that it provides. Being able to have all of your roms at your fingertips is the way to go!
Nice job scoring the Hakko sponsor, and for me the HDMI mods are always a favorite of mine, love crisp clear colors and only needing one cord for all my consoles.
RetroRobot was surprising to me as I didn’t see that coming. Great video and thank you for showing the Dreamcast the love it deserves! I’d love to learn how to mod my Dreamcast and Wii and that Hakko would come in handy!
Very nice video, I never owned a Dreamcast but I have several friends who always have hyped it up. Imo the RetroGEM HDMI mod is probably my favorite, being able to carry a console forward on modern displays just can't be beat!
19:16 I’ve seen this intro! This is the Katana Dev Dreamcast intro! I’ve seen it a bunch of times before, but I didn’t think the music’d fit the OG intro so well too!
Great video! I've been modding all my old consoles and your channel has been extremely helpful. I just recently modded my Dreamcast and I would say that my favorite thing was adding the GDEMU and the new shell!
I am a Dreamcast modder and had never seen this model. Earlier this month I bought a broken Dreamcast at the flea market (bad disc drive) but I never touched it. Today I opened it and I cannot believe it’s the model you have here in the video. Thank you for this information. Felt surreal.
My favorite mod will always be the GDEMU. I like to keep my consoles as stock as possible, but replacing the disc drive with a card reader or something similar feels quite needed. Not only for convenience, but preservation of the console's functionality. Good job on getting the Hakko sponsorship! Definitely a good brand to rep.
That HDMI port mod is definitely my favorite, it really makes the console seem more modern and it's cool seeing all the customization options for the image output.
I love my gdemu mod I did on my Dreamcast with the help of your video! I’ve played so many games on this thing that would have cost me an arm and a leg otherwise! I also have an arcade stick hooked up so I can play the huge plethora of fighting games on the Dreamcast. I would love to receive the Hakko soddering kit to take my modding skills to the next level! Thank you and Happy Holidays!
Great video! Awesome job on the RetroGem install. Doing Gem installs is my favorite mod to do across all the consoles. Can’t wait for the GC and Wii. Thanks!
I think my favorite mod you've shown for your Dreamcast is the USB-C mod. The HDMI is super sweet, and providing the awesome graphics is good, but I truly think the USB-C implementation and ability make it such a powerful mod. Keep up the awesome videos and i'm looking out for more!
Custom bios chip is a neat mod. That new boot screen makes the console so unique. Contgrats on the hakko sponsorship. thanks for the giveaway opportunity
Love the hakko sponsorship! My favorite part of the mod is that custom shell, ohhh it looks so good. I wish component cables were cheaper for this system, I really wanna hook it up to my CRT but composite looks so rough
That is a thing of beauty! Hard to explain why but I remember buying my Dreamcast opening week more than any console I ever bought. So many top memories with that thing!!!
My favorite has to be the GDEMU, love being able to load any game from a menu! Love your channel and you have been a huge inspiration for me to get into repairing and modding consoles!
worth mentioning you can now develop your own Dreamcast games written in C, using Raylib. If you have the modem bought, you can also copy them (via Network) without burning CDs or swapping flash-disks.
Sadly the GDEMU isnt suitable for large collections of ISO's really. I have one myself. It doesnt like very large memory cards (512gb+) , they take forever to load up on boot, and the menu isnt suitable for such large collections either. There are alternatives that support ssd's , but i havent tried them myself. GDEMU is good itf you just want say under 100 games on there.
Hakko as a sponsor is great! I love my desoldering tool. My favorite mod is straight forward, in the MODE. Dropping an ssd or hdd in allows for far better capacity per dollar ratio.
I've never played or used a Dreamcast. That said, my favorite mod would be the RetroGEM HDMI mod you showed in this video. It allows the console to connect to modern TV's. I could absolutely make use of that soldering iron to start modding my old gameboys and old iPod.
I think my favorite mod here is the retro gem kit. I think it's really neat that they support so many consoles and that they added so many features to it. Full size HDMI port is really nice too.
the gemu voltage issue is vastly overstated. I have several of them going on 2+ years of heavy play without a single problem I would also advise a hyperlubricant like motorkote for lubrication
All these mods are amazing! But one mod I am fascinated by is the bios chip allowing you to play import titles. The second mod is the HDMI mod giving you full range playing on newer TV’s.
Great video! My favorite mod was the fan lubrication/thermal pads replacement, because the fan-tastic pun made me laugh! I hope you had a wonderful holiday!
Good job on the video. I appreciate you for showing the resistor mod for the gdemu. I was actually on the obscure gaming forum talking about this a few years ago. Still using that mod to this day with no issues.
This is probably my favorite build of yours so far. Thank you for showing these mods. I need to take my DC out of storage now. I actually think it's a Va0 console. I'm excited!
I loved taking the day off at work to pickup my pre-order Dreamcast at EB games and playing Soul Calibur and Sonic Adventure. The HDMI adapter looks awesome!!!
My favorites have got to be the custom BIOs chip and the Resistor mods. Soldering if my favorite thing to do ever since I started on my Gameboys. Thank for showing me how to get into repairing my retro consoles. Love you Tito.
While I'm not familiar with the Sega Dreamcast, my favorite will have to be a tie between a fan lube/replacement mod and PSU replacement mod. It's always nice to have a quiet fan and more convenient to have a standardized power cable. It's a struggle being a retro collector with all these cables...
I absolutely loved The Dreamcast. I got it on launch day, and the original Sonic Adventure felt like magic. The Dreamcast felt like the perfect console, every title was pure joy. House of The Dead 2, Jet Set Radio, Space Channel 5, Samba De Amigo. Sega did not miss.
I used the M.O.D.E. mod on my Dreamcast. It's plug and play and I also have a 3D printed extension to fill in the gap where the CD-Rom was on top. Looks great and works even better.
I also have a MODE. I would personally recommend the GDEMU over the MODE, however. The price difference isn't easily justified, because a $50 GDEMU does its job perfectly fine.
@@37Kilo2 How is mode with large collections? GDEMU is awful to use with my 1tb samsung evo sd card. Slow AF, menu isnt suitable for such large colelctions either.
How is mode with large collections? GDEMU is awful to use with my 1tb samsung evo sd card. Slow AF, menu isnt suitable for such large colelctions either. IS phobe better as it supports ssd drives?
The M.O.D.E. has to be my favorite Dreamcast mod, since it also works on the Saturn. And while I do like the idea of the powerboard mod, I wish it used the simpler, more robust one-piece power cable that came with the system. It's so nice to see this console getting the love it deserves!
I so wish I could've had the opportunity to own a Dreamcast as a kid, but I'm thankful to own one now! I'd love to tackle the HDMI mod, that thing rules. So many features!
Always enjoy seeing another mod from you! My favorite Dreamcast mod so far has to be the VMU Pi. A desoldering gun is next on my list of mod tools to get :)
Long time viewer, just excited to see you flourishing and keeping the content coming! This whole Dreamcast build looks sick Especially the custom Bios chip! I never got to enjoy this system but now I want one!
That bios chip is super neat. When I think of custom bios chips, I think of the og xbox and having to solder a whole plug for the board. With this dreamcast mod, it just pops right on with the use of a hot air station
You could do a dream pi, only use a pi zero 2w with the hardware style modem (I think mine was a US Robotics) Anyway, you can cram them all together in the modem case and play dreamcast online wirelessly. I made one using a regular pi zero w, and I think the only thing I would like to try different is removing the old dial up connector from the stock modem and enlarging the opening for a tiny fan, as after an hour or so it gets pretty hot.
Even 25-30 years later, I still love my Sega Genesis and my Dreamcast. I've thought about modding them, but I honestly don't want to risk breaking hardware I've had since I was a kid. That's what alternate models found on eBay are for.
Favorite mod would be the gdemu with HDMI from retrogem. Congrats on the Hakko sponsorship btw you deserve it. I'm going to get into this soon I'm looking into which items to buy was going to go with a Jbc clone unless... Perhaps a new 2025 video about what is "needed", having trouble finding a good hot air station under 200$.Thanks for your videos btw, they really help the community.
My favorite mod is between the HDMI or the sd card mod. Being able to connect to modern TVs is very nice but also being able to load digital games instead of physically makes travel so much easier.
My favorite mod is the GDEMU itself. Better than "the good ol' days" of getting up and swapping discs till you find that one game that you really just want to sit down and get into.
thank you for mentioning my 18650 battery mod, unfortunately i could not deliver it in time.
that looks so much better then the hack job i did with an AA holder.
Time is much less important that quality. The gaming world has taught me that many times.
I've been waiting months for stock to replenish. I'm on the email list. I haven't heard anything about new stock.
Take your time making them. It's better for anything electrical to take time and be perfect every time than a bodge job
Congratulations on the hakko sponsorship wow that's amazing

Good job on the video. I appreciate you for showing the resistor mod for the gdemu. I was actually on the obscure gaming forum talking about this a few years ago. Still using that mod to this day with no issues.
This is probably my favorite build of yours so far. Thank you for showing these mods. I need to take my DC out of storage now. I actually think it's a Va0 console. I'm excited!
Cool Stuff. Still my favorite Retro Channel. Thanks Tito!
The beauty of an hdmi mod can’t be overstated for being able to continue to enjoy these consoles on modern TVs well past their initial life cycle
I loved taking the day off at work to pickup my pre-order Dreamcast at EB games and playing Soul Calibur and Sonic Adventure.
The HDMI adapter looks awesome!!!
This is rad, and I appreciate the huge Dreamcast upgrade. I also laughed out loud when you showed the footage of yourself wearing the magnifying lens.
Coolest mod is definitely the retrogem digital hdmi mod. Love how it interfaces with other scalers and the realtime menu.
Happy Holidays to you too! And thankyou for making amazing videos!!!!
@37Kilo2 Agreed. I got mine years ago when it first came out... But now there are more options to choose from.
I'm sorry, but you're SO WRONG. The retail bootup screen is 1000x better than whatever that devkit crap was.
The custom Bios Chip has got to be my favorite. This is such a sick build.
Happy New Year! Stellar work!
The M.O.D.E. has to be my favorite Dreamcast mod, since it also works on the Saturn. And while I do like the idea of the powerboard mod, I wish it used the simpler, more robust one-piece power cable that came with the system.
It's so nice to see this console getting the love it deserves!
For me the retro gem would be my favorite Dreamcast mod. Happy holidays Tito!
About mod you missed: To keep the original GD drive, mod its board in order to plug an hard drive.
Congrats on the new sponsorship. Although I am disappointed that this means we likely wont get an update on the iFixIt one.
Calling it ultimate for engagement. TH-camrs gotta influence.
These December uploads are getting out of hand! Now there are *two of them!*
Even 25-30 years later, I still love my Sega Genesis and my Dreamcast. I've thought about modding them, but I honestly don't want to risk breaking hardware I've had since I was a kid.
That's what alternate models found on eBay are for.
my favorite dreamcast mod is that usb C PSU you bought. Really love the drop in power replacements with USBC for retro consoles.
That soldering station is sick AF!!!
I like the SD Card mod to load up Crazy Taxi even faster.
I love that custom shell, really looks sweet! I always loved those semi transparent shells like the one for the Dualshock controller.
The Pixel FX HDMI mod is definitely my favorite mod. Glad we're in an era of a one size fits all HDMI mod. Also followed you on Bluesky. 👍
My favorite mod is between the HDMI or the sd card mod. Being able to connect to modern TVs is very nice but also being able to load digital games instead of physically makes travel so much easier.
The HDMI mod definitely is my favorite. The convenience for modern tvs and the extra debug settings seem really nice!
My favorite mod is the GDEMU itself. Better than "the good ol' days" of getting up and swapping discs till you find that one game that you really just want to sit down and get into.
