Gangaikonda Cholapuram was once the capital of Chola rulers and was first made the capital city of the Chola Empire by Rajendra Chola I (the son of Raja Raja the Great) at the beginning of the 11th century AD. Gangaikonda Cholapuram, for 250 years, served as the capital for around 250 years. The eminent Chola emperor founded the city probably to commemorate his victorious march to the Ganges. However, its inhabitants have forgotten its role as the south's capital.
Rajendra fought many battles and won every one of them. For every victory he gained, he assumed a title commemorating his success. He also conferred titles on his victorious generals. The moment he took independent sovereignty, he embarked on a "conquest of the quarters", the DigVijaya.
சோழர் கால மாபெரும் தலைநகரான "கங்கைகொண்ட சோழபுரம்" வரலாற்று பக்கங்களில் "கங்காபுரி" என்று கூறப்பட்டுள்ளது. மாமன்னன் இராஜேந்திரசோழன் தன் தந்தையான இராஜராஜ சோழரை விட ஒரு படி மேல் சென்று பல வெற்றிகளை குவித்தார். சென்ற இடமெல்லாம் வெற்றி வெற்றி வெற்றி என்ற முழக்கம் மட்டுமே எழுப்பப்பட்டது. கங்கைவரை சென்று, வென்று அதன் நினைவாக கங்கைகொண்ட சோழபுரத்தை தனது தலைநகர உருவாக்கப்பட்டு 250 ஆண்டுகள் பிற்கால சோழ பேரரசின் தலைநகரமாக விளங்கியது. இங்கு சிவபெருமானுக்கு கங்கைகொண்ட சோழீசுவரர் கோயில் எனும் மாபெரும் கோவிலை அமைத்தார். கங்கை வரை பெற்ற வெற்றியின் நினைவாக கங்கை கொண்ட சோழப் பேரேரி அமைக்கப்பட்டது. இதற்கு சோழகங்கம் என்றும் பெயர் உண்டு.
