"Relaxing" River Side Peak District Wild Camp - Helm Compact 2
So, this is one wild camp that did NOT go to plan at all. It was planned to be a nice relaxing river side camp in the Peak District with my superb Helm Compact 2 as I have not been out in this tent for a good while now.
The tent performed very well as always but other things did not go to plan at all and.... well you'll just have to see what happened.
Thank you as always for clicking on my video and watching, I truly do appreciate your time! 🙏
Keep looking after yourselves everyone and keep enjoying the great outdoors.
    ATB... Chris

Alright Paul... I know man was propper gutted. But, never say never 😏
Honestly, 17 years of hiking and some tasty scrambles over the years especially in Europe but I've never felt so unsafe and unstable as trying to get up that 😂 was so slippy with that green stuff especially on the wet rocks under the Heather. I was only going on a 'relaxing' low down camp so didn't even have any more technical equipment in the car or I'd have gone back. Ud get it with the right kit etc but would be interested to see what it's like in different conditions.
But yeah if you are doing something like that and sort feel comfortable or confident then it's always best to not do it in my opinion. Annoying as it is.

The camera doesn't do the drone location or the river justice. River looks easily crossable, and the hill accessible but you wouldn't be leaving your drone if it was. On a brighter note, it looks like a great location.

    • @theheightoflife
      @theheightoflife  ปีที่แล้ว +3

Hi mate, yes I 100% agree with you! Not only that but even in person from the camp side of the river it looked very doable and thought it was going to be a simple mini scramble up the heather. Got to the other side and honestly it was completely different. Heather was just over my knee height deep in places, sometimes with deeper 'holes' the roots etc of the heather were wet and had green moss which was very slippery and couldn't get any footings. The rocks in the Heather had all that green moss / slime on them and was incredibly slippery. Tried 5 or 6 angles and got about 2 x height of my body at one of the points then came to a sticking point. Felt very unstable and unsafe and if you would have slipped you wouldn't have stopped believe me, could have hit rocks on the way down and would have definitely hit rocks in the river. Could have ended badly. The river also looked very crossable yes and I've gone through much worse especially in the Lakes, Scotland and other places in Europe. There were some parts inbetween the rocks that were about half an extended trecking pole deep and the rocks were covered in that green stuff and very slippy indeed. I wasn't bothered about getting wet at all or filling my boots with water in the morning as would only be going back to the car but in hindsight now would have made the attempt up even worse lol.
I've been hiking around 17 years and have done what look like much worse scrambles up waterfalls in the Peaks with wet rocks which have been fine and a lot worse scrambling in mountainous terrain. But like I said felt very unsafe here.
So annoying though as it seemed so close! 😫
With the right kit you could get up for sure but as I was only on a last min low down camp I never even had any technical equipment in my car.
Obviously people have been up there like Gamekeepers etc to plant the tree and pickets.
So annoying but last thing I wanted to do was break something else or hurt myself etc.
Location was great though and somewhere I have been to loads even way before this channel which I've only had for about 2 years.
Thank you so much for watching and your comment I really do appreciate your time 🙏🏼😊

I was around there last week using my drone, but in the forest. Got to be so careful with these machines, take a second of not knowing where they are and bang it is either crashed or gone forever. Mind you, made out a great cautionary tale for all of us, at your expense of course. In the end it is all about the adventure! Better luck next time my friend.

    • @theheightoflife
      @theheightoflife  ปีที่แล้ว +2

Hi mate! Thanks for clicking on my video and watching 😊🙏🏼
Yeah honestly was full on user error as they say, I quickly learnt Drones + rushing = bad ending. Have used this for a good couple of years now and had a drone before. Never crashed one. But was getting some overhead shots of the tent etc to get some different camera angles, that got done then thought hey ill do a quick dronie. Rushing and sun had already gone so light was gonna go quick I didnt double check my angle and, well that happened 🙈😂
I did since find some low quality videos in my cache which I wish I new about before uploading this as I'd have included them. There will be a short part 2 to this though with hopefully a surprise in it.... depending..
But yeah they are something that a double or triple check on your flight path is needed for sure and as you said I hope this video will jog some people's memories to do that too.
Thanks again for watching and leaving me a comment it truly is appreciated 🙏🏼 😊

Haha mate I know 😢 trust me from the side of the river camp was it looked very doable even in person. But when I finally got to the other side it looked waaaay steeper and yeah with the Heather roots, rocks and wet moss was very slippery!! Not even sure if Microspikes would have been enough you know, if you did end up slipping you'd be straight down into the river, could hot rocks on the way down and definitely hit them in the river. Didn't feel sensible at all to attempt more than I did. Even the chap the other side said he could tell how steep it was with the perspective of me trying to get up.
Sp annoying but would rather be safe, not break anything else or hurt myself.
Obviously people must have been up there to plant the trees and pickets and could with right equipment but as it was only a low down camp I didn't take any technical kit.

Yes in the wood/forest where I was filming last week with the drone, found loads of these fire scars to the land. The problem is that there is a carparking area across the road (snake pass) and entrance to the wood/forest and a little walk. Any place where humans can get easy access with a little walk, you will find fire vandalism. I made a rant video about this and the consequences eventually by landowners taking action for non permission fires (if you either have permission or own the land that is fine, up to you). th-cam.com/video/t7guM3vte-o/w-d-xo.html

Thanks mate.. yeah was gutted 😔 I've done some pretty tasty scrambles over the years in much higher and what looks like more dangerous terrain but just felt so unsafe and unstable trying to get that lol. The rocks underneath the Heather with the green slime etc were lethal man. Would be interested to see what it's like in summer but even then the Peak District can be boggy with the peat. If you don't feel confident gotta be safe and sensible.
      Cheers pal 🙏🏼🫶🏻

Hi Cat! Aww thank you so much for that offer it is tremendously kind of you. Please do be careful though but I am in no way asking you to even try.
I said to a few people, in my 17 years of hiking and climbing ive done some pretty tasty scrambles and climbs (with the right equipment) over the years, especially in Europe. I've done things in this country that by eye look far worse but we're OK. But honestly I've never felt so unsafe and unstable as trying to get that lol. Even in person is looked so doable even from the camp side if the river, like you're just gonna walk up through the Heather and get it. But had no idea of the madness that was underneath it all.
Was thinking if if have had my Microspikes I'd have probably given it another go as already tried 6 or 7 routes but I dont think they would have even been enough.
With the right equipment you'd do it but those rocks with that green gel /slime on underneath were lethal man.
The chap that was with me is a rock climber and even he didn't have his harness, hard hats or anything in his car.
If for some magical reason you do ever some across it though I'll happily meet you or pay postage. Definitely won't work as its panned down with rain up there since but would still be nice to get it back lol.
I really appreciate the offer though in any case 🙏🏼❤️🙏🏼
      Hope you're good 😊

@@theheightoflife aye, I stopped the vid on your night photo and can see the rocks at the bottom. Were u trying to go up from the bottom, or down from the top, or horizontal approach? The camera is very deceptive for sure, I know those hills well. I wondered about spikes too, mine aren't great don't think they will add much, bigger ones, crampon style might get tangled in Heather and cause a stumble. I'm hoping to get to Glossop at the weekend to see a friend, it's up that way so will take a look if I have time. The fact it will be knackered by now means I won't take too much risk but if I can I will 👍

    • @theheightoflife
      @theheightoflife  ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@Wild.cat.adventures Yeah the rocks at the bottom were feeding to the ones at the river bed, there are also rocks in and underneath the Heather which you couldn't even see from looking at it untill you started to go up. I tried to go up from the bottom about 2 different ways, from the left and about 3 routes from the right and coming up the angled 'corner' part. Some ways looked promising untill you started and another thing with the incline couldn't even see the tree so the chap was directing me then too.
That's so awesome of you though thank you so much for even offering ❤️ please though if you even do attempt be safe and don't take any risks as you said 🙏🏼

Yeah I'm gonna go back at some point, very much doubt it will ever work again as these Drones aren't waterproof or anything and it's rained a decent amount since up there. But would still like to get it back nonetheless

Ahh thanks so much Shawn!!! 🙏🏼 That is such an awesome offer mate 😃❤️
Honestly it looked so doable from the camp side of the river, but was a different story once I tried. I've scrambled up waterfalls with slippy rocks easier than that. Just couldn't get any footings at all, everything was like ice, no grip, very very steep even though it probably looked OK on camera. I reckon with the right equipment you'd get up there as someone must have to plant the tree and pickets. As I was only going low down I didn't even have anymore technical stuff in the car. The bloke I met usually has climbing equipment and harnesses etc too but didn't have any in his car either.
Such an awesome offer but I couldn't put anyone at risk. If anyone fell trying to get up you would probably hit rocks and definitely when you hit the river, you wouldn't stop once you started to go. I'd feel so bad if anything happened to anyone.
I'd love to get it back though even if it didn't work. It's got my operator ID on it so if anyone did find it and got in touch with the CAA etc I'd happily pay postage.
Thank you for watching and the comment though its truly appreciated 🙏🏼 ❤️

Was great to be out though and honestly thought it was doable from the camp side of the river but when I got the other side and tried it was a different story. Honest mate the camera doesn't even begin to show it. I should have recorded some footage of what it was like but was just concentrating too much on actually trying to get it not the video lol.

Please nobody else take the easy option camping at snake woodlands. It's a half ruined picnic spot for sheffielders and mancs in the summer. If you're not from the area and don't know, you're not to blame but it gives wildcampers that make the effort to get out of the way a bad name. Not knocking you either pal, you're not from round here.

    • @theheightoflife

Hi John! Thank you for clicking on my video and leaving me a comment 😊
Yes I agree these sorts of places shouldn't be for wildcamping as great as they may seem. Far too easy to get too and they do seem to attract the 'wrong people'. This video was a last minute video as I had a contract target date to include my ad integration from the video sponsor (*edit: which isnt or wont be a regular thing either), it was close and was rhe only weekend I had. I prefer summit camps and well hidden.
I have only had this channel for a couple of years but have been hiking for around 17 years as I kept my love for the great outdoors from a previous career. There was a reason I did not say my location in the video this time, the description or any comment (as much as people who know about it will know) but so many other people ask and I just say 'The Peak District'.
Every time I cut through this area on a day hike (which is getting less and less) it just aggravates me. So much litter and landscape damage from people coming down here and leaving there rubbish etc.
Last year on a loop back from Kinder as I came past the waterfall there was a huge fire scar, loads of ash, a disposable bbq and 16 empty cans of dark fruit cider! I put my hiking boots in a bin liner in my car and had a spare one, do got it came back down and got the bbq and 16 cans then moved all the rocks and wood and tidied the ash up as much as possible. Really pisses me off man dont get why people would want to go down to enjoy these beautiful places then ruin them!?
Not sure if you saw it but I did a 'short' which was on the way back from here. Some idiots had re loaded a fire up right under pine trees and then left!! Which I also put out etc. I know some people don't have education in forestry and might not realise the catastrophic impact that would happen if pine trees caught or how to safely build a fire. But surely you'd like to have the sense that leaving an unattended and uncontrolled fire in a no go 🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️
Anyway I'll stop moaning now 😂 Thank you once again for your time in leaving the comment and hopefully people will read it and keep them aware. I hope you get to have some great time in the fantastic outdoors and I wish you a very safe and pleasant weekend John.

Oh dear 🤦🏻‍♂️ sounds like a real life nightmare that. Can't believe they did that let alone film it for everyone to see!
