Bunker Hill Mine Restart Progress: September 2023 - Russell Portal Upgrade

The Bunker Hill Mine is a historic producer of silver, lead and zinc. Shut down in the early 80's, a new management team is upgrading the Russell Portal just south of the city of Wardner, Idaho, to accommodate modern mining equipment. Mike Saunders, Senior Mine Engineer, explains the project, specifically the excavation and removal of the previous portal and highlighting the new portal. Upgrading the Russell Portal will allow for the installation of the primary ventilation fan, to keep fresh air throughout the life of the mine.
Also highlighted is the completion of electrical power lines up to the mine with the assistance of Avista utilities, bringing hydroelectric power to the mine allowing for the transition away from diesel powered generators. The completion the portal upgrade will allow for the resumption of underground activities that will continue to prepare the mine for the restart of mining activities in 2024.
