I know Finn doesn't add much pertinent content to these videos, but he's become a lovable mascot of sorts whose absence is now not to be tolerated. He's a bit like David Fletcher's mustache in that respect.

My father told me about seeing Hobart's funnies, the flail and roller, when he was at Normandy. In the mid to late 1970s I was with the US Army Engineers working on mine rollers and mine plows for the XM1 tanks. At a puzzle palace meeting, a tanker General declared that we will not be putting those ugly things on our beautiful new tanks.
Thirteen years later, upon looking out on sadam insane's mine fields, the tankers panicked. What were we Engineers going to do to protect the tanks? It was pointed out to them that they had killed our program and that we had the British Viper which was slow to use. We resurrected the prototypes from the Armor Engineer Board Yard and had more made under emergency contracts. I retired in 2002 and have not kept up with the newer technologies. I have noticed that rollers of various types still seem to be around.

Speaking of other museums - there's a museum about an hour or two on the train from Bovington called the Solent Air Museum in Southampton that is well worth a look. We were allowed up into the cockpit of the big flying boat in the middle of the museum when we visited the place a few years back. During the same trip we went to the Imperial War Museum in London where they had a Spitfire's Merlin engine all polished and shiny in a glass box. The same engine is in the Solent Air Museum except it was just pulled out of a plane and put on a stand, it smells of petrol and steel and not for show at all. Thought it was quite the contrast to the one in the Imperial War Museum.

Would there be any chance of you giving us your opinion on which 5(?) books every AFV enthusiast ought to have on their bookshelf?
I confess to spending most of your excellent presentations squinting over your shoulder at your book collection.
As a side note and with regard to the lack of a suitable tank engine in the UK in the thirties in time for re-armament, did nobody think to investigate the possibility of converting/adapting the large numbers of RR Kestrel engines that were just then becoming obsolete for aircraft use as the RR Merlin came into service or do you think the inter services rivalry between the RAF and army may have seen that theory off?

I asked: "Wherefrom i Scotland do You ladies hail?"
    Answer: "Wales, Wales, Wales, Wales."
Me: "Sorry, my mistake! Where in Scotland do You Whales come from?"
I much later regained consciousness in the intensive care unit heavily plastered up......

Idea for a future question and answer... or topic indeed. How was the armour plate specification arrived at and then tested before being used in a tank, prior to and including WWII? The format for these Q&A and the talks is beautifully low key, allowing for plenty of room for depth to emerge and to also go off on the odd marvellous tangent. It just works.

Just got my order of books, many thanks to you all at the museum store, great job.
I cannot recommend using the store enough, fine products, packing and shipping was excellent, and I was even contacted with a refund from the estimated shipping cost as they managed to pack in cheaper than expected.
Postage is still pricey, but shipping books from England to Canada isn't going to be cheap for anyone.
    Shipping was fast and professional.
Fine job, folks, top notch service.
    Thanks again.

Your dog is one of the high points of these videos, whoever doesn't like the dog really needs to crawl back under their rock and practice hating even more than they already do.

Well someone else in the comments thinks that other person in the comments should shut it about Finn being in the videos. Good boyz are welcome in any video about anything.

Looked like a great day for it, it was 2 degrees here this morning lol. And do me a favour, no Finn?, he takes up two seconds of the videos. He's a handsome boy.

Really like these lectures and the way you present them. These are a great advert for the Tank Museum.Thankyou. Continue these even after the museum reopens, if you can.

I volunteer whoever did not like Finn in the videos to lead a cavalry charge. "Kiss the Cannonball". Hope you got a jolly good saddle!

A good day of fishing is still a journey. I love walking down a river casting. And Finn is a great sidekick!

I thought I saw video in the 1999 three part documentary, "The Korean War: Fire and Ice", where I saw a Comet driving through a city. Only on screen a few seconds, but it did not look like a Cromwell to me.

"Acid free is key" It truly is 100% of my maternal great-grandad's -RMC- second world war memorabilia, from photos to firearms (properly registered in the States, where moved post war), is catalogued and properly archived or displayed. My siblings and I have determined the firearms will stay in the States (where I live) in private hands. My 14 year old has been mad for history since age four, he's the only one with true interest, all of my portion goes to him. Hopefully quite a ways in future!
